New Band Plan - Beacons

I do not like the new band plan from the beacon point of view. Any change to the beacon segment of the band is highly undesirable: Apart from time taken to change frequency and the cost, most beacon keepers fail to keep lists up to date. It will take YEARS to get the new info into the lists, if ever (the beacon list on this site has entries which have not been updated for 20+ years!!).
Somewhat dismayed by this change, completely unnecessary.

Hi Chris, I undertook an exercise back last year to go through our beacon lists and update based on DX Cluster reports and web based resources. I'm not daft enough to think it's now 100% up to date. But I believe most of the Active Beacon List should be. If you find any redundant beacon data on this site, please let me know so I can correct it.

OK Dai. It seems a bit odd that only you, myself and one anon have updated any entries in the Active Beacon List. Having spent time and money putting a beacon together, you would think at least beacon keepers would keep us informed!

Hi Chris and all.
Agree strongly in re the new bandplan and beacons...I think we all need to remember it's a 'plan' and not the law.

Hi All, Not sure if anyone will read this but... I have said elsewhere that I think the "new" 50MHz Region 1 Band Plan is 99% nonsense. In particular, moving all of the Region 1 Beacons up the band beyond the known universe is about as useful as closing them down! Moving the beacons up the band has rendered them almost useless as i) they will not be stumbled upon and ii) they will be the last thing to propagate as the F2 MUF creeps up. I recall that at the time of the rule-making a prominent RSGB Committee Member commented that 6m beacons were less important internationally these days as they were always pipped to the post by QRO stations anyway. How wrong can you be!
Last night 15/4/14 ZL1RS spotted ED7YAD/B and within minutes, alerted by this, he had worked EA9 (!) and EA7. Search for EA7YAD on if you want to see how beacons in the bottom of the band perform. What is done is done - but it doesn't make it any less crazy:-( But a public discussion and support from interest groups such as UKSMG might save something of this valuable resource 73 Peter

15/6/2014 OY and JW7 beacons lost in space
Late in the evening we finally noticed that the OY and JW7 beacons were booming in on there new "might as well be closed down" frequencies! Didn't attract many spots - but did stir up some interesting chat on ON4KST and a reminder from Kerry:
See for more
