UKSMG Summer Contest Results 2009
The 2009 UKSMG Summer Contest Results are now available. Many thanks to all that have sent in entries this year, Congratulations to the section winners, especially Norman C4I who’s score was truly awesome. I hope that as cycle 24 approaches that conditions and entries improve. All, Just finishing off sorting out all the gear for tomorrow, I've remembered to pack my waterproofs. Propagation during the last wet UKSMG contest was dire so hoping it's not an bad omanfor this year. This is the last time I will have internet contact until the contest is over, internet hasn't reached all of deepest darkest Derbyshire!! It would be really good to fill the log with members over the weekend. Later on tomorrow evening when it has got a little more quiet it will be nice to have a "proper" qso with stations(more than 59 etc...) so please give us a call. We will be horizontally polarised and hopefully vertically as well so have a listen out for us. I know Matt is taking part this year but unsure if the other usual supects will be about . I
spent from 1200-0020 at the rig!(1 hour for dinner) and worked
38 stations and only 5 members!by 0020, followed from
0620-1120 with a further 7 stations worked including Peter
G8BCG UKSMG MEMBER No 1!,Under the callsign G5KW/P other
Confirmed Members worked were Ian G7RIS/P,G5FS,Neil
G0JHC,G4GFD,G5WQ and a golden nugget C4I which was my best dx at 3,412.03 km! (I never knew Cyprus was that far! hi). Weather conditions at my QTH Wind and Rain on both day's. Operating conditions . Kenwood TS2000 75w ,Home brew 3 ele Yagi at 23ft abgl (112ft abmsl) obstructed by Houses both sides (W and E ). Thanks to all involved I still was disapointed I did not hear more Members :( 73. |

All C4I got off to a bad start 5 qso's then bad closed. Then 15:18Z band opened to the north. HV0A is so strong I am getting splattered 4khz away. 18.00 first UK station followed by a few more. Band closed @ 18:58Z Off again @07:35 YO calling me. Pileup then until 11:22 then silence, then smoke poured from the IC-7400 the power button was pressed and that was the end of the contest 501 qso's. Thanks to the 15 members that called me and to everyone else that gave me another enjoyable contest. 73 to all Norman C4I my contest callsign. |

As
last year I was part of the Team operating as G5WQ/P near
Gloucester. The highlight of the activity for me was a SSB contact with TR8CA on Saturday afternoon at 5804Km, which I believe was our best DX, however 5N0OHC on Sunday in the last hour or so of the contest was a close 2nd (this time on CW with Darrell G0HVQ operating). Activity levels seemed about the same as last year, but we logged slightly more contacts. There were a small number of stations that were heard, but we were unable to work due to failing propagation (I believe C4I was one of those). 73 Stewart |

Our
first outing as the new formed club G5FS. I cannot belive how
much water can fall out of a cloud in one day. when we went to
the location a couple of weeks ago it was a fantastic view on
a 360 degree pan. However Yesterday we could not see the Cell
tower that was about 100 feet away from us due to the fog
which did not clear until around 7pm (local). The guys got
totally soaked setting up the kit, although at least this year
the kit was reliable. The band was interesting to say the least, a good number of contacts were made, however we did notice that UKSMG members were very thin on the ground, was this to do with the England game?? Anyway as a rough unchecked score we want to submit 102396 Unfortunately around 8pm (local) the weather started to turn nasty again, so we had no choice but to call it a day, there is only so much dry cloths you can take with you to a contest.. Still - thanks to everyone we worked, and I hope that everyone enjoyed the openings.. Mat - G5FS |

This
was the wettest UKSMG contest by far for us in Derbyshire, We
got soaked setting up on Saturday morning and totally
saturated on Sunday Afternoon pulling it all apart. Had to
stop operating twice due very close thunder storms and
finished the contest early due to lightening. It was the first
time that I've had enough of operating in the contest!!! The best bit for me was drying my socks out on the air cooled generator. Thanks for everyone who called me (especially G6TGO who kept me company whilst there was very little else on the bands) I've just dumped all the equipment at home and not even looked at the log but I think a rough count is 130 QSO's, well down on last year, No GM, GI, GD, GJ but did hear a GU, not sure where all th members were? All the equipment is still covered in water and mud. On paper the station should have been better this year than last, we had more db on top of the tower, a mast head pre-amp and we even tried using a vertical at times (it didn't gain any extra contacts which I though it might, but it did help sometimes as a recieving aerial with lower QRM). Not sure if we would have done anything differently (except maybe operated from a warm, dry, inviting pub all weekend, mmm maybe that could be a new section for next year how about it Ade........). On Sunday morning we started up again at 05.30 local time but the first contact wasn't for another hour. Last year there were lots of UK stations up and about at this time but I think this year everyone stayed in their warm dry cosy beds. all Not too bad a contest for me working QRP on 2.5 watts into a v dipole at 20ft. thanks to all the contacts and the comments people gave. best DX was 9H6A. the ones that got away was CT1 and 9HA. didnt do the whole time but still an enjoyable time 73 mike G1YQH |

Ade, Thanks for getting the results to use. Well done and congratulations to the winners!!!! Looking at our results this year it's time for me to have a re-think and go back to the drawing board.... Ade, how about a section just for me hi, even up the odds a little. Is there any chance of having the full results (stations work, squares and DXCC's) as this gives me a better reflection of how I faired against the others. Out of interest would the other groups that used ssb and CW like to share the ratio of contacts depending on mode with me.....it might just make me pull my finger out and learn morse, but then again..... 73's ian G7RIS |

hi
all id like to ask if more recognition can be made in the scoring for working UKSMG members . a multiplier would be a good idea , but if not a multiplier then some form off additional points given for working UKSMG group members in the contest , and something which reflects in scoring to a reasonable degree rather than just ONE POINT extra per qso with a member . what would really liven up the scoring and make it more of a lottery on the "winning " positions is if we did not have to exchange UKSMG membership numbers during the contest , but after sending in our logs they could be checked by the manager against the UKSMG membership list and then the scores calculated accordingly with extra multipliers/points awarded per each qso with members . the actual additional points awarded for working members would have to be balanced and in line with other additional points achieved as in prefix worked multipliers . i dont know how we stand for UKSMG membership percentage numbers in mainland europe versus the UK , but i am aware that if there is an inbalance which favours the UK more, then whatever is worked out for this it needs to be able to allow all areas to benefit and not just the UK based members and vice versa . the problems we face with points scoring calculation is how do we balance them out across the board when we are working in a VHF band that is not equally propagating between areas . finally i would like to ask that the PORTABLE section be reinstated , so that like for like stations can compete against eachother . fixed stations have an advantage of being able to build/setup a station long before the contest starts and to finely tune the eqpt and iron out and bugs , or even to evaluate and select a different location or more . portable stations have to build up on or around the day of the contest, out in a field somewhere in the middle of nowhere and without prior knowledge of local noise levels , weather conditions or QRM at that location , and then dismantle the eqpt after the contest ends and then pack it all up and get themselves home . it is a members contest and we would like to have relevant sections in which to enter according to our operating criteria . there allways used to be separate portable and fixed sections and we would like them to be reintroduced again please . this would very much in the spirit of ham radio . 73 ian G5WQ |

All, I agree with Ian G5WQ and would love to see the portable section reintroduced again. I would also like to see a restricted time section, maybe the first 4 hours of the contest. Before now due to work and family commitments I have been unable to put a 24 hour entry in (but like Ian said with being portable it takes up the whole weekend with setting up and pulling everything down again). I think this may get more people taking part and submitting an entry that haven't got all weekend free I'm not quiet sure if we can ever get a level playing field on Six.... before now we have had a more QSO's but a lower score than other teams. Some of this is luck with the multipliers but the other teams maybe more skilled in looking for multipliers etc. I'm in it to win it but don't really think it will ever win a section but my main goal each year is to be the highest Brit in the section (and to beat the WNLS guys) however at the moment I don't think any of the other teams need worry HI. about sections for CW only qrp >5w 100w, 400w ssb qrp >5wn100w, 400w Mixed mode Single and multiop max power allowed by licience This is what I see in other events Get everyone to email a picture of themselves operating and if they win display it Maybe also start a hall of fame league table for highest results todate I normally operate from mountain top using solar power on my own I would like to try a big antenna this year if I get chance to find or build a 10 Element on a long boom. This year I hope to get some other hams from Cyprus to operate on contest day. 73 Norman |
