Pierre, J79PAK

We have been advised by Steve, G7KHF and Peter, PA2V on the UKSMG Announcement page that Pierre J79PAK has died in a tragic accident.
Steve, G7KHF and Peter, PA2V - Wednesday 19 August 2009 - 10:26

I had known pierre over the years ,one of radios true gents, and of course 6 meter fanatic , my codolencies go to his family and friends , he will be sadly missed , rip pierre.

Ray, GM7NZI - Wednesday 19 August 2009 - 10:26

On 27th July last, I worked Pierre, J79PAK, and pleasure it indeed was. After our QSO I monitored him for a long time -- he was a very competent, efficient and courteous operator, and I'm sure he will be greatly missed by his immediate Family, and not least by the amateur radio 'family' to whom he gave much.
RIP, Pierre. We'll remember you! de Doug., GØUYC

Doug, GØUYC - Thuirsday 20 August 2009 - 09:18

Had the pleasure to work Pierre a couple of times on 6M.
His patient operating practice was obviouse. It sure is a tragic accident that made him a silent key. He will be missed on air. My thoughts to the family and his doughter he tried to rescue. R.I.P. Pierre.

Bill Lee, GW3MFY

Bill Lee, GW3MFY passed away in the early hours of Friday Morning. He had been fighting the final stages of Cancer for the past 7 months, and my gosh did he fight! Most of you will know that Bill loved 6m! I have him to thank, for getting me interested in the magic band back in 2001! I shall certainly miss my grandfather on 6m! Let our thoughts be with him.
Dan, MW1MFY - Friday 03 July 2009 - 22:19

Hello Dan - Thanks for letting us know about Bill - sorry for your loss - I have good memories over the years Bill was on 50 MHZ. Take care and regards to the family. Another missing call on 50 MHz - getting less and less each year. 73

Ken, G4IGO - Friday 03 July 2009 - 23:22

I'm very sorry Dan. 73

Jose, EA7KW - Saturday 04 July 2009 - 07:42

Hi Dan, This is very sad news indeed, Bill will be missed and the band a it will be much quieter place without him now. Even less of the old brigade left now, my sincere condolences to you and the family. R.I.P. Bill.

Dave, G8FXM - Saturday 04 July 2009 - 08:39

Dan, sorry to hear the sad news. I 1st wkd Bill on six 20 yrs ago and he was in most pile-ups the next 20 yrs. A good Op and always enjoyed a chat. RIP

Neil, G0JHC - Sunday 05 July 2009 - 14:50

Sorry to hear the news Dan used to hear bill often in a pile ups on 6 as well as yourself, will be thinking & will pray for you & your family At this hard time,I once had a ragchew with Bill about G6XM a friend of mine who is now SK. Stewart.

Stewart, G1HHO - Monday 06 July 2009 - 22:08

Hi Dan, So sorry to hear about your Grandfather. Bill was very much a pioneer on the VHF bands - more so on the 144MHz band where he carried out much experimentation. You can find details of his initial VHF tests in early editions of the RSGB Bulletin and Short Wave Magazine. Keep the 'MFY flag flying. 73 David G4ASR RSGB VHF Manager

David, G4ASR - Tuesday 07 July 2009 - 19:42

Ken Willis, G8VR

I received this from Ken's son Martin this morning "Derek, Sadly, Dad passed away on Wednesday. He spent his last few days in the Pilgrim's Hospice in Margate. He was 90 and had a very good innings, so celebration for what he achieved is the order of the day, rather than mourning. If you are able to notify any of his ham compatriots it would be appreciated. My brother, Stephen, will be notifying the RSGB. The funeral will be at the Thanet Crematorium at 2pm on Monday 27th July. We will be arranging a get together afterwards to which everyone is invited. Best wishes, Martin" A very sad day indeed. Greatly missed G8VR SK. 73 Derek G8ECI
Trev, G3ZYY - Wednesday 12 June 2009 - 12:12 (GMT)

Very sad to hear about Ken. We were both members of the RSGB VHF Committee many years ago. Previously to that he wrote the VHF Bands column in Radcom. Very keen on 50MHz and other higher frequencies. A great guy. 73 David G4ASR
David, G4ASR - Saturday 27 June 2009 - 12:12 (GMT)

Just returned from holiday and I am saddened to hear of Kens passing. A true gent and pioneer, well known and respected throughout the Six Metre community. He will be missed by one and all. R.I.P Ken.
Dave, G8FXM - Saturday 27 June 2009 - 17:50 (GMT)

We, from Indonesia 6 meter user, convey our great condolescence for family and also 6 meter member in UK and the rest of the world.
THANK YOU. Sincerely,
Syarif YC1FWO - Tuesday 4 August 2009 - 10:50 (GMT)

Ted Collins, G4UPS

It is with great regret that I have to inform you all that Ted, G4UPS passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Many of you will know Ted both as an avid 6m operator and particularly as a keen recorder of propagation on 6m. He also came to prominence operating as ZD8TC some 25 years or so ago. I expect a full obituary will be available in the next Issue of Six News.
For those who can make it, the funeral will be held at 10 am on Friday 12th June in Hemyock Baptist Church in Devon.
Trev, G3ZYY - Saturday 06 June 2009 - 09:04 (GMT)

Very sad to get the news about Ted G4UPS , i had many many contacts almost daily on 28.885 way back and he always seemed to be there when i called. I also worked Ted on 50mhz, in one of the very rare Perth to Uk openings. 6 will not be the same without Ted.
Graham, VK6SIX/VK6RO - Saturday 06 June 2009 - 09:53 (GMT)

I'm very grief to know that Ted G4UPS passed away. He was one of the most famous 6m fellows. I didn't know him personally but we passed long time chatting about propagation on 6m or so. My condolences to his family.
Sergio, IK0FTA - Saturday 06 June 2009 - 09:54 (GMT)
Thanks for the news on Ted Trevor. I always remember when the UKSMG was starting how much energy Ted had and how he managed to persuade ( ) us to contribute or assist - his energy certainly rubbed off on a lot of us. We will not forget Ted.
Ken, G4IGO - Wednesday 26 August 2009 - 08:14 (GMT)

Really sad to hear about Ted, I remember working him for the first ZC4/G 6m qso back in 1989, we had so many chats on 885 and 6m over the years, I last worked him on 6m in 2007 whilst living in EA5, RIP Ted a true 6m Gentleman.
Adrian, G0KOM - Saturday 06 June 2009 - 16:23 (GMT)

Very sorry to hear that Ted has passed away.
We had QSO on the 18th of May and he sent his last 6m log to me as late as on the 1st of June. I have logged 575 QSOs with him on 6m but sure we have had more, he used to call me after my daily morning skeds on 6m with G3CCH . I sure will miss his "hej hej" when the band was open from here to Devon on Es.
Arne, SM7AED - Saturday 06 June 2009 - 16:25 (GMT)

Very sad to read about Ted. One of my very first G's on six in 1988. Sure Ted will monitor 6M activities from above. RIP Ted.
Peter, PA2V - Saturday 06 June 2009 - 16:25 (GMT)

Vy 73 Ted RIP
Roger, G4HBA - Saturday 06 June 2009 - 21:31 (GMT)

Sorry to hear of Teds' passing. We'll remember you ol' chum. May your days now be filled with DX in the great beyond.
Mike, VE9AA - Sunday 07 June 2009 - 10:11 (GMT)

This is sad news; Ted was an avid six metre person and in earlier days was a regular holidaymaker in the North East too; I used to talk to him on six metres when he was portable up here. When I started the 'What's on Six' column all those years back he always sent a detailed report and monitored 28/50 beacons all the time. Very rarely did even a whiff of propagation miss his attention.
73 Clive G4FVP - Sunday 07 June 2009 - 18:09 (GMT)

So sorry to hear of Ted passing away from his son Richard. We have been friends for many years since we worked regularly when he was on Ascension Island during the 70´s. We also met when he came up to Scotland to visit his relatives and worked on 6m almost every morning 3-way with Johnny, G3CCH , before I set off to work. Since I retired to EA6 we have kept in touch with xmas cards and email/jokes (risque and otherwise!). So sadly missed and the old brigade now sadly depleted.
Bill, GM4DGT - Monday 08 June 2009 - 21:12 (GMT)

Rest in peace Ted Charles, EI5FK - Tuesday 23 June 2009 - 11:37 (GMT)

Sadly had to read about Ted Collins in QST notes. Ted and I talke often during Cycle 22 on 10M and we set a dx record on 6M. ALl my ld mates I worked on 6M are never to return as is indeed ourF2 from the colonies, not in my lifettime..
Steve, VK3SIX - Saturday 06 June 2009 - 09:54 (GMT)

Jim Smith, VK9NS

I am very sorry to report the sad loss of Jim VK9NS. A call-sign well known to many of us, I know he will be very much missed across the amateur world. The text below is from his son Bruce G3HSR:

"It is with deep sadness that I inform you that Jim (VK9NS) passed peacefully away on Norfolk Island at 15:40 local time on 10 February 2009 after a short illness. Jim is survived by his wife Kirsti (VK9NL) and his four children: Bruce (G3HSR), Stuart, Sheena and Fraser (all living in the UK). Jim's contribution to Amateur Radio, DX-ing and IOTA is inestimable. He will be sadly missed.

Further information and condolences can be sent to Kirsti at jimkirsti@ni.net.nf "

Trev, G3ZYY - Tuesday 10 February 2009 - 12:07 (GMT)

Jim was a good friend for some 30 years. Not only did I work him from the vast majority of his rare locations from the time I got my ticket in 1975 but I would never have reached #1 Honor Roll without him. During the ten years I wrote DX News Sheet Jim would ring me almost every week with DX news and gossip and we'd put the world to right for an hour or more. Ruth and I met Jim several times during his visits to the UK and he visited our QTH too. In 2007 we visited Jim and Kirsti at their home on Norfolk Island and spent many hours talking DX. At the time I had been QRT on and off for many years but Jim told me to "get something up, at least for 10m, for when the sun wakes up". Thanks to his prodding I'm back on the air, but very sad indeed that I shall not work him ever again.

God Bless you, Jim, you gave the True Blues so much to hope for back in those Golden Days.
Bren G4DYO - Tuesday 24 February 2009 - 14:00 (GMT)

Mohammad Balbisi, JY4MB

I am very sad to read today that Mohammad Balbisi JY4MB is a Silent Key. When the UKSMG in 1994 made a DXpedition to Amman Jordan and made the first use of 6m from JY, Mohammad was secretary of the RJARS. He helped us obtain the special callsign JY7SIX and spent much time with us while we operated - as a matter of fact I think he was 'keeping an eye' on us. But he was was very friendly and jovial.
Nick, 5B4FL - Friday 30 January 2009 - 16:39 (GMT)

Sadly JY4MB Mohammad went silent key on 22/12/2008 . He spent a good deal of his life as the secretary for the (RJRAS) Royal Jordanian Radio Armatures Society . Mohammad JY4MB will always be remembered for his deeds and as a friend to Jordanian , Arab and international hams . (may God rest his sole)

Dale Newton AA5XE

AA5XE, Dale Newton Richardson, Jr. of Kerrville, Texas passed away in a local hospital on Thursday July 10th. He was 61. Dale served in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1988. He had 335/352 (current/deleted) countries confirmed at the ARRL DXCC Desk. Dale also participated in the DXCC Challenge Award and had 2579 countries confirmed, including 120 on 6 meters and 155 on 160 meters, says W5OZI, Pat Rose. Dale operated with Pat a few years back in Guantanamo Bay as KG4XE and also was one of the CY9SS ops in 1997. He also served as the Secretary/Treasurer of SMIRK. Our condolences to his wife Maiko and the Richardson family. http://www.grimesfuneralchapels.com/obits/richardson.htm (The Daily DX Vol. 12 No. 139)

As an fellow colleaque, regarding his inwolvement arround Six meters, Dale did a highly apriciated job, through SMIRK. Among others as webmaster of the SMIRK DX site. I for one have had the message that there was a terminal decase in Dales family, however it came as surprice that it was Dave himself - Dave go with God, be assured You will be remembered in the Six meter cumunity.

Matt, OZ6OM - Monday, 14 July 2008 AT 18:09 (GMT)

Kjell, SM7BAE

Active Ham Radio operator since 1950

Kjell KjellRasmusson, QRV on 144 MHz EME since 1968. "My very first EME-experiments started back in 1968 working K6MYC and ZL1AZR. Signals were very weak but readable. The 1968 style rig was all homebrew putting out some 1300 Watts to 160 element phased array. The antenna was designed by my self and Yngve Persson SM7BCX. Receiver was an old Collins 75A2 with AF239 germanium transistor converter. State of the art in those days" "As far as I remeber K6MYC was using about 700 watts output and 160 elements collinear antenna" "This is my old homebrew 144 MHz transmitter together with Drake R4B receiver. Built 1967.
From Kjell's website.

I am sad to hear about Kjell - not many of us 50 MHZ old timers left - and of course Kjell was many years more on 144 MHZ. he always had time for newcimers and didnt stay in the past - he moved with the times. I shall treasure his QSL for our 50 MHZ EME QSO - a rareity
Ken, G4IGO - Sunday, March 30 2008 at 20:51 (GMT)

Very sorry to hear Kjell SM7BAE passed away. Will remember him from one of my first 2M EME contacts and help with my first big amplifier. Your signals will be missed. R.I.P. Kjell
Peter, PA2V - Sunday, March 30 2008 at 20:44 (GMT)

I was very sorry to hear that Kjell, SM7BAE , has past away and is now a silent key.
We had many, many contacts on 6 and 2 meters (MS).
With my condoleances to Kjell family.
Repose en paix, cher Kjell.

Georges, F8OP - Tuesday, April 1 2008 at 17:53 (GMT)

Graham, M5AAV

I have just heard the sad news that Graham Ridgeway M5AAV became silent key this morning. He was the QSL sub manager for the M5 prefixes, as well as being the QSL manager for a number of others, Z21KF, ZK3SB, G0OCW, 9M6/G3OOK, M5RIC, TX4PG, 9M6XRO, 9M4SEB, A25OOK, XU7XRO, VK6JB, V8FEO, as well as managing both my M5BXB and OK8XB callsigns. He will be sadly missed.
Steve, M5BXB

May I also pass on my condolencies to Graham M5AAV's Family and friends. Being one of the first M5's too, our paths crossed on a few occasions on and off air. A thoroughly nice guy, who will be missed.

Adrian Deane, M5ADE

Alan, GW3LDH ( 9H1AW )

9H1AW (GW3LDH), Alan C. Wright, died tragically on Tuesday January 22nd 2008. He was doing some tower work late in the afternoon when he apparently fell from ladder while doing antenna work. Alan fell three stories. He was 71 years old. Complete details can be found at http://tinyurl.com/2h5lgm. Alan was very active on both 6 and 160 meters. He is survived by his XYL 9H1JN, Maureen
DailyDX

Sorry to hear the news that long standing UKSMG member and past Six News Editor, Alan GW3LDH ( 9H1AW ) has gone SK. Alan was one on my 1st 6m contacts back in 1987. I am sure is he calling CQ DX somewhere tonight. RIP.
Neil, G0JHC

Sorry to read the sad news about Alan 9H1AW-GW3LDH. He was one of my few 2m contacts with GW back in 70's and always my pilot sig on 6m for backscatter prop presence. I will miss him.... RIP Alan.
Costas, SV1DH

Deeply Regretting the Tragic SK Alan 9H1AW, very much a valid member of UKSMG and powerhouse in Ham Radio activity most validly on Six Meters.
John, 9H1XT

Back in 2002 I was living temporarily in Malta through work. I will never forget the look on Alan's (9H1AW) face as he walked back up the road to his QTH from the beach after his evening swim to see his beloved aerial system waiving about as Mans, 9H1GB and myself raised it again following us secretly replacing his broken rotator as a favour to a friend. Alan had used what he called the "Arm Strong" method to rotate his entire mast with a mole wrench clamped to it at chest height following the rotator failing the previous year. This was no mean feat as he had to climb up stairs to the apartment roof each time the propagation changed direction, slacken the U bolt holding the mast to the wall bracket, rotate the entire mast and aerials then tighten it in position. Now that was dedication to DXing and he gave many operators a new country on 6m using this method! RIP Alan.
John, G0JJL

first worked Alan back in 89, one of the first few GW's I worked from ZC4 on 6m and we spoke many times after that, a sad loss to 6m, RIP Alan
Adrian, G0KOM

Ezzat, SU1ER

Very sorry to see an announcement from SU1KA, via A71EM:Today Ezzat SU1ER Silent Key. After Chris G3WOS and I visited him in 1995 with an amp donated by UKSMG, Ezzat worked many of us. RIP.

Nick, 5B4FL

Nick, this is very sad news indeed. I remember so well you and I going to visit Ezzat in Cairo in April 1997 with the sole objective of encouraging Ezzat, SU1ER to get on 6m. It was one of our plans that actually came off! Ezzat spent the first day showing us the tourist sites of Cairo. You hated the museum I remember, but the camel ride was great fun! We never really thought that we would both work him withing a few weeks of the trip did we?

I will always remember that day in May 1997 when I arrived home at around 7 in the evening. Helen, my wife rushed at me saying "for heavens sake get on the raidio as the phone had been ringing for the last couple of hours!" This led to one one of those unique moments on 6 when I realised that Ezzat had been calling for me for a long time and wouldn't work anyone else until he had worked me!

It was an experience that was never to be repeated! You can see and listen to our visit on http://www.gare.co.uk/egypt.htm .

Ezzat was so helpful and enthusiastic at the time and I think he truly enjoyed giving SU to many 6m guys in Europe. I was still exchanging emails with him until last year if I remember rightly. He will be sorely missed by us all. Chris

Chris, G3WOS

So sorry to read SU1ER passed. It was my first DX and new one after I moved house and got the new antenna up for some hours. It is one of the contacts you will never forget. Ezzat will be missed.

Peter PA2V

I also received news today that Ezzat SU1ER has passed away. Like Chris and Nick I have had the pleasure of meeting Ezzat many times during my visits to Cairo on business. Always a good host and pleased to have people visit him whenever the occasion arose. RIP old friend

Peter, G3IBI

Patrick, HH7PV

HH7PV, Patrick de Verteuil, died of a heart attack on January 13, 2007. He lived on Haiti for some 34 years giving many their first QSO with HH. Six meter ops will no doubt remember working him on the "Magic Band". There is a tribute to him at http://www.haitipartage.org/Patrick.html (In french) tks WZ8D/W5OZI for the info. published in Daily DX W3UR.

Neil G0JHC
Pat, HH7PV will be missed. I was fortunate to catch him on an Es opening back on July 2, 2001. A sharp operator who heard well and was patient with callers.

Jon N0JK

Sad story HH7PV passed away. Remember the many times he was there on 50 MHz in one of the best years of cycle 22. A great op will be missed.

Peter PA2V

Michael, G8SRL (G0GCI)

G8SRL, Michael, died in a road accident on 6th July 2006.

"Michael was a keen VHF operator and scanned Six most of the time. Being a bachelor he had his shack in a living room. He is very much missed by the local club where he was the mainstay. A keen VHF contester, no doubt his call will be missed by many of the regulars."

Ken G3KIP

Brian, G3HBR

I have just received an email from John Hummerstone, Brian, G3HBR's son. It reads as follows: "I'm afraid I have the sad job of reporting the death of my father, Brian. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just after Christmas and fought a short but nasty battle until the morning of Thursday 16th February. Whilst the illness was unpleasant, he kept his sense of humour and was able to communicate this to us right up to the end. I know he will be sadly missed by all his friends, former colleagues, Scouts and Radio contacts."
Chris G3WOS

I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Brian. He was very committed to Six Metres and the UKSMG. As 'What's on Six columnist' I could rely on Brian sending in a quarterly report. He missed very little of what was going on on the band and was very philosophical when he didn't make it with the rare DX. Many people will miss Brian including group members who enjoyed his friendship, I count myself lucky to have known Brian.
Clive G4FVP

For me Brian was a good friend. I will miss him more than words can convey. He lived 6m, and I agree that hit or miss, he was always upbeat. When I was often bending his ear about missing some rare DX or other, he always used to say to me 'Well what would you have to look forward to if you'd worked them all?'. He was right, the fun is in the chase, and he was a great chaser. Six (as we have known it) has lost a father, not a son...
Kerry G0LCS

Really sad story. Brian was one of the first I worked with an indoor dipole and home brew transverter. Only good memories of him.
Peter PA2V

Another good soul lost to 6M. Will always remember his cheery voice on 885 leading up to our QSO on 6 from VK3. RIP.
Steve VK3SIX

Just caught up with the sad news of the loss of Brian G3HBR. I always found Brain to be one of life's true gentlemen. He always had a friendly word of advice and encouragement and this I'll truly miss. My heart felt condolences to Brain's family and many friends.

David, G1JDU

It is with great sadness that I have to tell you our Webmaster, David G1JDU, has passed away after returning from a business trip to the US.  At the moment no further information is available other than it was from natural causes and totally unexpected.  I will post funeral details once they become available.  Trev.
Trev G3ZYY - Thursday, August 22 2006

Hello All, Further to the announcement last week that David G1JDU had passed away, I now have details of the funeral arrangements. Regretfully this is very short notice. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 1330 in Dukinfield crematorium Greater Manchester. For anyone wishing to attend, a map is available here: http://tinyurl.com/q4x2b

Linda, David's partner has asked for any donations to be made to Christie's Hospital in Manchester.
Trev G3ZYY

rest in peace DAVID G1JDU
stewart, G1HHO

I would like to record my deep sadness too; David was a really nice guy and a hard worker for UKSMG. Thank you to Trev for getting the news out so speedily, my thoughts are also with his family and friends. I hope that Trev can attend the funeral it would be nice for the Group to be present, even in the background, to express our loss and affection for David
Clive, G4FVP

I echo Clive's thoughts. David contribution to the group was huge some of which would have gone unnoticed by the generality of the membership, things just happen don't they!.
Dave, G8FXM

Ditto Dave's sentiments - I know that David put in a huge amount of work on UKSMG.com. I really did not know what to say when Trev called yesterday morning.
Peter, G8BCG

A sad loss indeed. David was such a nice guy. I was shocked, like others I guess.
Peter, G0KUX

I am on holiday next week (till Friday), but if funeral is after that I'd like to join you both. He was a lovely guy.
Kerry, G0LCS

Norm, G3NVO

It is with regret that I advise the members that NORM G3NVO who was just a few countries away from his target of the magic 200 became a silent key October 22nd 2005.
Andy G3SVD

I am really saddened to hear that Norm, G3NVO, has passed away. It came as a complete shock, to such a degree that it made me think about my own mortality. It seems like only yesterday that he was so full of life and 6m when we were laughing, joking and drinking beer at last August's BBQ. He took a train rather than drive so that he could have a drink of the real ale on offer. Although I do not know Norm intimately, we used to talk quite often and he was definitely very near the top, if not the top, of my short list of exceptional 6m operators. Moreover, he was also a very pleasant guy that was fully immersed in the fun and frustration of 6m. Like many others I guess, I always knew that Norm would beat me in a pile-up as he seemed to be blessed with that unbeatable combination of an excellent site and even more excellent operating skills. If I heard Norm calling someone, I always took the time to find out who he was calling as nines times out of ten it would be of interest to me. He will be really missed in IO91 as one of the in-crowd and one of the guys that makes working 6m so such fun. Even sadder, I seem to remember him telling me that he had recently retired and was looking forward to catching the DX at long last. Life can be really tough sometimes. My condolences go to his family. He will always be remembered when the history of 6m finally gets written down.
Chris G3WOS

'NVO', the times I've heard that familiar call in the pile up (and lost out to it too!) - 6 has lost a big gun courteous son...
Kerry G0LCS

rest in peace norm g3nvo ,"NANCY VICTOR OSCAR" you always blew my eardrums out.
Ian M0BCG

My condolance to Norm's family. I had him on my logbook since 1992 and I met him on g3wos bbq this year. GL my friend.
Sergio IK0FTA

Very sorry to hear about Norm, G3NVO. I only met him once, at the G3WOS BBQ this year, but he was a familiar voice on Six round here and he'll be sorely missed.

Ron, 7Q7RM

Allan G0IAS has written to say it is .... with great sadness I report the passing of 7Q7RM...Ron died last Saturday afternoon (September 2005). I'm sure that MOST of the UK 6 mtr lads have Ron to thank for a 6Mtr QSO, and they will be sad to hear that the Voice of Radio Mexico is now S/K...over the past 15 years I have had nearly a daily sched with Ron. SAD NEWS INDEED AND THE LOSS OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS CALLSIGNS ON SIX METRES
Clive G4FVP

Wkd RON 7Q7RM & heard many times on 6Metres,RIP

Here’s some more info on 7Q7SIX and 7Q7RM..I hope you all find it of some interest. Ron’s 6m equipment stopped working earlier this year, it was sent to South Africa for repair (via JA). During this enforced time off the air, he had a bad fall, which resulted in a difficult few months before his death at the age of 87. His 6m equipment was returned but he was never able to unpack it and get back on the air. The 7Q7SIX beacon spent much of its first decade (the 1990’s) up a tree at the QTH of 7Q7JL, who lived less than a mile from 7Q7RM. The beacon was moved a few yrs ago when Ron moved QTH to a place called "new-lands” a secure compound for the retired. It didn’t operate from his house, but close by. There are no current 6m ops in 7Q as 7Q7JL’s equipment has also stopped working. The beacon is off air and hopefully when JL has time (very busy work schedule) some more news will be available. 7Q7LA will spend Christmas in Malawi (he is currently in the UK) and his QSL mgr Allen G0IAS will ask him to look into it, if 7Q7JL hasn’t had time. By the way.. Ron’s ashes were recently scattered, close to the "beacon tree”. 73 Neil G0JHC

Very sad to hear about Ugo I0CUT. Although I had not personally met Ugo, I was well aware of his 6m work and I remember your operation with Ugo from HV4NAC a few years ago. He was an oustanding signal here during the EU Es openings on 6m and will be sadly missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ugo 3 or 4 times in Roma. The 1st time in 1991. Always the life and soul of the party. I will remember him for his great sense of humour and open welcome when ever I visited Italy or spoke with him on the air. RIP.

I was greatly saddened to hear of Ugo's death. I recall our meeting in Castigliano a few years ago. A great character and he will be greatly missed on six metres. The magic has dimmed a little on the band today with this news.

Albert, EI6AS

Guys I'm sorry to say that Albert EI6AS a long time 6m fanatic has passed, this from IRTS news. "Albert EI6AS, Silent Key The many friends of Albert EI6AS will be sorry to hear of his death on Wednesday last 1 December 2004. He had been ill for some little time and died in Our Lady's Hospice, Harolds Cross, Dublin. Albert has had a long time involvement in amateur radio in EI. He served on the IRTS Committee for many years and acted as the Society's VHF Manager for a lengthy period. Up to his recent illness he read the two metre SSB Radio News each Sunday from his QTH in Clondalkin. Albert was what could be described as a true experimenter. He was constantly expanding his knowledge in new and exciting aspects of the hobby and he was always seeking to do things just that little bit better. New aspects of the hobby were regarded by him as challenges. He was technically very competent and he was always to the fore in coming to terms with new technologies and in assisting others to explore new modes and methods. His main interest was in the bands of 28 MHz and upwards but particularly in 50MHz and 144MHz. He constantly monitored these bands and acted as an alert for openings on them by ringing round a group of friends in the Dublin area whenever they occurred. He will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege to know him. To his family Sally, his son, daughters and grandchildren we extend our deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace." We will miss you Albert.

Bern, G3CEG

SILENT KEY I am sorry to start the New Year with some sad news; I have just been informed by Colin G3TA that Bern G3CEG passed away mid DEC 2003 age 83 after a fall from which he did not recover. Bern was a very enthusiastic 6M operator for many years with some memorable achievements on the magic band from his home QTH in the Cotswolds where he had lived for the last 30 years; I shall always remember his excellent cw, patience and good manners when chasing the DX.

Ian Anderson, T20AA

Silent Key...Ian T. Anderson T20AA, Funafuti, Tuvalu. It's with deep regret that I wish to inform the six metre community of the passing of Ian Anderson T20AA last Friday 03rd Oct 2003 aged 79 years. Ian was very active on six and HF, mainly CW and had retired to Tuvalu some 20 years ago. Ian was an expatriate Scot (GM4JAB) and was formerly ZD9BT, VP8GZ, J87BD and T2ITA. Ian was quite a character and was well known on the amateur bands for his typical Scottish wit and humour, Ian gave many T20 for a new one on six metres and will be missed by many. He leaves his wife Fipe, five children and three grandchildren. Rest in peace my old friend...

Brian Booth, G3SYC

It is with sadness I have to report that Brian Booth G3SYC became a "Silent Key" in the early hours of this morning, 7th September 2003. Brian was a long standing member and supporter of the UKSMG but had to give up his radio activity and membership earlier this year after being diagnosed with Cancer. I visited Brian in a hospice last Monday and true to form he was still laughing and joking about some of the "scraps” we had got ourselves into on six over the years. One of the last things he said to me was "I didn't do too bad did I …getting to 175 DXCC from up here”. You certainly didn't Brian. God Bless, you will be missed.

It was a shock in the real sense of the word to hear that Brian, G3SYC, has passed away. I first heard from Brian when I first came onto 6 back in the mid ‘80s. He was a real northern character in that that he had a fine sense of humour and really cared about the band, its community of operators, what was happening in terms of DX. And boy, was he an enthusiast without going over the top. He was really one of the core UK 6m DXers, though he never thought of himself in such a role. He was forever telephoning me and I'm sure many others asking about what was being worked in the south, bemoaning about the challenge of getting so-and-so's QSL card or talking about the abuse of 110 "up north”. He was always a regular at the UKSMG get-togethers and dinners and even when he was in considerable pain from a hip replacement operation a couple of years back he made the not inconsiderable effort to get down to Sandown to participate in the 6m banter and arguments. He always raised the tone of the discussions in a gentlemanly way and was ready with an appropriate quip and I always made a beeline to talk with him. It would be so typical of him to talk about his 175 country score to Neil in the hospice and I'm so pleased that he kept his sense of humour even in the recent difficult times. 6m will never be the same without Brian and he will be really missed. More importantly though is that he remembered by many for many years. Goodbye Brian.
