I just received a phone call from 5R8GJ (F5QT), back in France last saturday. Jean-Paul gave me quick infos:
450 complet QSO and 36 countries worked on 6 meters: JY, 4X4, VR2, US, UT, LY, RX, S2, RV, RX, HS, J28, EW, S5, 9U, ZA, JS6, BV, and several europeens. Unfortunatly, not any QSO with North or South America. Every evening, the band was wide open into the Mediterraneen aeria (5B4, I8, IT, JY, 4X4, EA7, a.s.o.). Only one big opening to F and G's : the 25th october in the evening. He left his beam to FR5EE who will be now very active on 6. Jean-Paul gave me also these update infos: 1° - QSL via his home call. Be patient ! He found at home more than 500 envelops ! (21, 28, 50 Mhz QSO).
2° -FR5EE is ex FR5EL. So, don't send any letter with FR5EL adress : they are definitivly lost !
3° -Don't write on your envelop: Ile de la Réunion Madagascar. Ile de la Reunion is a french department, Madacascar is another country. All the QSL send to Madagascar are lost or stolen during their way. 4° -His apologies for those he didn't work, but every time the pile-up was tremendous !

To be quite frank about it, without the infracstructure and internal liason within VK via our clusters and the data base and hours of propagation predicting work carried out by VK5LP and I to produce the data base, I think we would still be listening to ther white noise.

Peter PA1SIX, without being mean and complying with the ethics of this page, could I suggest politely to you that many VK stations are well aware of what it takes to work Europe and dont need reminding about it.
We were working long distance dx for a long time and developed the art of predicting openings because everywhere from here is a long way and we never had the benefit of close distance stations to hone our operating skills. May I also remind you that it is about 11 years to the day (23/12/88) since the first VK OH signal was received. A few guys over here Peter are taking exception to the propagation predictions from PA. Hi!

Worked VE1YX today at 1327z for what must have been one of my easiest DX QSOs yet. Having snuck home for a late lunch to check the band, turned on the rig and there he was. Signals 55-58 during brief QSO but nearly faded out completely later whilst I was monitoring. No pile, didn't even have time for the amp to warm up up, so count myself very lucky. Thanks Bob.

IPS foF2 map seems to be wrong(again). Eastern foF2 is too low, western foF2 too high. BTW, based upon previous cycle I'd say EU>VK/JA propagation should be more or less over (untill the end of february 2000). From 10:00 UTC onward S-AM + Carr. should come in the picture.

In my opinion you are hearing Thailand and a few Malaysians, the far east , the middle east are also strong but West, the Black Sea 49 are unique frequencies and the Eastern EU 48's are usually weak.
I had no trouble in iding the 48s on Friday when I heard the Romanian station, the two events correlated.
What did you hear when you worked the SV1?

What, and where do you reckon we are hearing?
Every night we have very strong 48.250 video starting as early as 07:00z and sometimes lasting throguh to 11:00z, with signals reach RST 59+.
The zero beat frequency on USB is 48.249.95 (so 48.250). Beam heading is usually between 285 and 305 degrees.During all openings we have reasonable 10m propagation to EU, and SE Asia, but nothing from Africa.
I've been assuming that it has been in Europe, but the longer and more consistenbtly we get this video, the more I'm questioning it. The path places it in line with the scatter prop that th JA's get into EU when beaming towards the sub-continent...... so is there any 48.250+/- TV tx from countries such as Bangladesh, India, Pakistan?
Got any other suggestions?

No EU path last night but the day began at 2330z with a huge opening to all of JA and HL also a bonus was Phil YB0ASRA/9 who ran his keyer on 50.103 beaming USA.
I was wkng JAs and suffered QRM from the beacon and wondered who this turkey was to find surprise surprise, Phils keyer.
At 0000z it came up out of noise and stayed around 579 until after 0130z. Success to VK3AMK/3AKK and myself for a new grid and field PI85. Phil ran 500 watts plus to a stacked pair of three el yagis.
Band stayed open until after dark 1000z and over 250 JAs worked and HJL9. heard the TV3 outlet described by Tony Mann on 48.2396 and confimred it was the sole outlet in the region and from Thailand not malaysia.
Kotakinibalu is 0004 up on 2400.
After dark the band dropped and no link up to Europe so the YO4 will be the only EU heard only for a while. KN44 top QF12 is only 14500 kM and way short of ther G3 qsos from 10 years ago this month.

Split-frequency operation will work very well indeed on one condition: that people get out of the habit of not moving more than 20kHz from .110. With the prevalence of DXClusters (love 'em or hate 'em - I hate 'em) anything interesting will be found within 5 minutes of it turning up. So YES to split, but USE THE BAND. There _is_ life up above .150 if we want it that way! The narrow-mode portion goes all the way up to 50.500, although you'd think it stops dead at .150 There's more than enough room if only people could get used to using a tuning knob. 73, Pete

Hi All Sixers. Regarding working split I'll think that it isn't that bad at all. If we compare it with twenty meters or any
other HF band you can see it is a normal operating method in SSB and CW. 14 MHz is often full of stations and I haven't seen any complaints of working split. So let's do it and use split when a pile-up occurs. If 6 metres is so occupied that using 2 frequencies is not friendly anymore we can start the discussion again. Best regards and 73,

Hi OM, i'm writing a list of most usually PMR channels that is possible to hear in Europe from any parts of USA, South America, Asia and Oceania.
I'm writing in team with IK1EGC (Dan) and IK1MTZ (Diego).
I think that this work can help you firtly in USA direction where are not TV carriers and where is difficult a opening prediction.
The PMR channel can be made in FM voice or data mode and the list report can contain qrg/data/mode/language/ and tipe of service if it's possible.
If you want to help me, you can send me your reports by email.

I'm normally a BIG supporter of working split. However, when the band is WIDE OPEN as it was yesterday, working split only moves the QRM on to someone elses patch.

(afternoonshift) Would it be a suffestion to put an article in the six news abot working split. I heard 100 stn calling but mostly the dx was under this mess. The dx for them selves was telling the pile up was so big he could hardly putsome one out. 3 to 5 up would be much better and quicker

If you are accessing from and office through a proxy server you will most probably have problems as firewalls generally block IRC chat to prevent employees wasting time. You should not have any problems otherwise unless you have disabled JavaScript or Java in your browser for security reasons - I doubt you have done this. At one time over the weekend there were 20 guys on chatting! If you ahve an IRC client you can access the forum via this mechanism - this discussed on the page. Chris

KO02 foF2 rushing towards 11 MHz. It doesn't look like we can expect much from VK/JA this season. More likely is that the propagation is going to shift towards AF, S-AM and possibly N-AM. Stations at the edges of EU, like GM/GI/OY could see 4X/JY/OD pop out of the noise (if they are qrv at all). N-AM will like be restricted to VE1/2/(3?),VO1/2,W1/2/3/(8?).

KC0PA's comments are very interesting and join the ranks of the comments by BV2A in SEANET 1992 who collared me for printing
reports of BV stations working VK and Europe without any legal
authority to operate on 6M and then there are the unanswered
accusations against illegal operations throughout Europe before 6M was widely allocated.
Old news to some but still an indication of the ends some go to secure 6M countries.
Even to the extent of fooling the ARRL.
This is the reason why you will not see any details of a Timor operation until all the tees are crossed and I's are dotted.

Thanks to those who responded to my requests for 6M antenna construction info last month. Unfortunately, I can't use any of it. 6M is not authorized in Kuwait AND NEVER HAS BEEN, according to the Kuwait Amateur Radio Society station manager at 9K2RA, Mohammed Al Holi. So, if anyone has ever worked 9K2-land on 6M, the station you talked with was illegally out-of-band. Probably one of my American bretheren who was here after the Gulf war earlier this decade and didn't know better. 73, Tim, 9K2/KC0PA

Hello,
A very nice morning with F2 for me as SWL and TV-DX'r.
Between 900 and 1100 I had a very positive ID of 3 (!) Thailand TV stations !!
I saw TV3 on 48,239.6 and later also another TV3 on 48,249.9. Also TV9 Thailand was QRM'ing on 48,260.4.
TV3 and TV9 has both a dark "3" or "9" logo in the lower right corner. The sync.bar of TV3 is filled with texts and the one of TV9 is black / empty.
Still no sign of TV Malaysia unfortunetly.

re the EH7 reception of 45 Mhz video prorbably from ZL, have heard reports of carriers like those ten years ago from a W1 but not confirmed.
The FM reports are a worry as usuually the MUF doesnt get up that high and we never hear
FM sound from such a long way away, normally that is.
I have heard FM from Europe twice in a life time. Once when I was heard and the second time when i worked over 60 stations,
so I suggest if the EH7 had FM sound from ZL he could work someone at least. For what its worth and
providing somone is around which often as not from ZL is not the case especially if it is early or late at night.
Tis probably all academic but my 2 bits worth.

KO02 foF2 above 13 MHz, so first hop from W-EU should be available. Shortest distance worked on this path is Western-DL to ZC4/5B. So if the foF2 climbs enough, JY/4X/OD/4L should be possible. The KO02 f0F2 will rise for another 2 hours befor dropping again.

Good start to today: 5N3CPR first heard 0823 here in IO90, got him before the pile-up started (real satisfying, that, after missing out on G3GJQ/5N0 last cycle despite catching numerous openings!) Also strong 48250 and 49750 video from east. I have a strong suspicion that this could be classic pre-auroral enhancement given the flares earlier in the week.

Hi Steve,
I hope it's VK3OT I've gotten at this address.
I was interested in your listing of Malaysian TV carriers on the vhf
propagation logger webpage:
48.2396
48.2400
48.2402
48.2496
48.2500
48.2502
48.2596 ? (listed as .2496) (Iran? see later)
48.2600
48.2604
The ones I've had (0600-1000 UTC) here in Perth are listed below:
(* = frequently)
48.23957-48.23960 (mainly 48.23958) *
48.24897 ??
48.24947
48.24974
48.24987-48.24989 (mainly 48.249875) *
48.24994
48.25017
48.25063-48.25066 (probably Thailand TV3: same freq received here '92-96)
48.26023 ?
48.26033 ?
48.26037-48.26038
I have also received Iran:
48.25962 Oct 25, 0606 UTC
and on Nov 11, the first opening to Europe from Perth:
UTC
0913- 48.239580 ? (2 carriers, subsonic beat at 0938, 1002)
0915-1005 48.247399 Biedenkopf, Germany
1029-37 48.249996 ? probably Bantinger, Switzerland
0930- 48.259863 Iran
0938 48.2603 ?
(Iran is also on 48.239600, according to Ian Roberts).
I alerted VK6HK and he worked Europe on 50 MHz:
"Thanks for the call yesterday. I had a great time following that between
0933 and 1025Z, working 20 stations in Europe on 50 MHz!
Signals were mostly low level, with only one contact on SSB, the rest
on CW. Stations in France, Belgium, Holland,Denmark, Germany and
Poland were worked, with one in the UK heard as the band folded at
about 1025Z."
TV DXers in Holland have seen all 3 Thai TV outlets on E2:
48.2396 probably Nalchon Ratchasima TV3 in central Thailand
(near Bangkok).
Its tx power is 20 kW but I dont know what the erp is.
48.250 probably Songkhla TV3 in southern Thailand
(near the Malay border)
Its tx power is 20 kW but I dont know what the erp is.
48.2604 definitely Udonthani, TV9, low power, northern Thailand.
As for the Malaysians (and Indonesians too) there is still scanty
information! The World Radio TV Handbook only lists Genting Sempah (112kW)
and Limbang (13kW). I suspect Cameron Highlands (5 kW) might still be on,
despite not being listed since 1989. None of the E2 tx in Thailand are
listed by the WRTH!
Steve, with all the contacts you have overseas, have you seriously tried
asking hams in Malaysia for info on Malaysian TV txs ??
I am contemplating embarking on this exercise.
Yours sincerely,
Tony Mann.
Perth, Western Australia.
Also have received C1/R1 (mostly Chinese) Oct 25-Nov 17, 0700-1000 UTC:

49.741565

49.753425
49.75596
49.75606
49.75609
49.75625
Some of these that are 10 Hz or less apart could be the same tx obviously.

To all ZS ZS ZS ZS ops: I have yet to work a ZS so as can be
imagined, am quite excited to do so. What I am wondering is this:
Have any of you guys heard anything out of NA on the VHF-LO
bands? IE: 34/35/43MHz pagers or tons of two-way between
30-50MHz from W/VE? I have yet to see a single report of
anything. I know radios aren't cheap in ZS, so perhaps not
many ops can't afford fancy radios with wide rx's or a separate
FM scanner to monitor below 6m. Anyway, I know there are probably
lots of anxious ZS's waiting to work NA too, and so are we!
I am just curious why we see no reports of 'things getting close'.

Not looking quite so good today as in the past few days...
FoF2's appear to be 10-15% lower than yesterday at the IO91 and JO64 ionosondes. The IPS site appears to be down?
Think there was some 48.239 video in earlier, seemed to have normal fading characteristics but with the amount of MS about, can't be 100% sure.

We have been asked to participate in an Es research project during 2000 and am presently putting together a year-long local 50 MHz competition to try to raise activity levels as usually there is virtually no activity between TEP seasons. I am trying to get in touch with Z2 50 MHz operators but have no direct contact with any of them. Could Med stations assist me by getting E-mail or postal addresses from them so I can forward info on the project to them. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Have some spare equipment available and will try to get 3DA0, 7P and C9 on sometime during next year.

Leonids this year not as good as last year but a number of ZS stations on the air this morning. About 15-20 stations on from ZS1-2-4-5-6 plus V51KC participated and many QSOs made between the various call areas. V51KC was a new one for several ZS stations.

Re KH6/DL QSO: looking back to my March 1980 log, I can find quite a number of KH6 QSOs on 28 MHz via long path (beam to ZS). Time was around 06:00 - 07:00 GMT, somewhat earlier that the reported 50-MHz QSO

KH6 to DL. The QSO between NI6E/KH6 and DK5UG took place
on 20 March 1992 at 0925Z. DK5UG beamed to ZS, signal was
very very weak. Propagation figures were SF = 169, A = 4.
I don’t know if I2ADN and ZC4MK who also worked KH6 were
beaming long path also. Very interesting to hear that G4IGO
and PA0HIP have heard W7CI (Arizona) and JA on long path.
First time I have read about that.

Re EU-KH6. I think that DK5UG (or was it DJ5UG) made a long path qso (beaming exactly south) exactly on the equinox 21 march at approx. 1200 local. I heard him qsoing but couldnot hear the KH6.
Don't know the year though , must have been 1991 or 1992.
Once heard W7CI long path (southeast) back in 1990, but I even couldn't raise a QRZ from him.
Best distance I ever heard on SIX was JE1BMJ calling CQ at
00.30 UTC on long path (529) back in 1992

Measuring TV carriers with Windows sound card: Seems everyone has a sound card these days: In USB mode (1 kHz steps on rig) tune 1 kHz low of TV carrier to obtain an audio howl. Use Cool Edit 96 (download free from Web) and Win '95/98 to grab the audio frequency from the rig's speaker (LINE input to sound card). In the Analyze/Frequency Analysis window of Cool Edit, read off the audio freq. Add to the RF freq, eg, 48.249 MHz + 1171 Hz = 48250171 Hz (Syria). Do exactly the same on WWV on 15 MHz to find rig's frequency error, should read 15000000 Hz. Multiply this error by the TV carrier freq, divide by 15000000 Hz. Add or deduct this answer to get the exact TV freq. Expect result within 4-5 Hz of the actual carrier freq. This is good enough to identify any TV carrier. If there is more than 1 TV carrier in the SSB bandwidth, the sound card will display the strongest audio tone. Add that to the RF freq as before. This method takes the accuracy of the rig and sound card out of play, and automatically calibrates the system (allow system to warm up!). With this method you can measure any AM or SSB freq, but not an FM carrier.

Jose EH7KW reports regular reception of "ZL" TV carriers. At the same time no ZL hears signals from Jose. ZLs have been active during these times and have been listening carefully for Jose and 48.75 MHz TV signals. Nothing heard in ZL. Could the signals Jose hears come from South America? Saturday: Big TV signals from QTF 70°. Found a crowded 50.110. But one of the CQ callers was UN3G. Very pleased.
BUT there was a small EME like signal and I thought I was listening wrong: There was 9M2TO calling CQCQ and the CQ callers all around.
Later Band openened to South Africa with big signals in big QSB. Great Day.

RE:Jim G0OFE. The data composing the 2 maps are probably not taken at the same time, and therefor not identical. The f0F2-maps should only be a help to determine if propagation is likely to occur or not. And ..., they are at least one hour OLD. So you're allways running behind the facts. On the online real-time ionograms you can see the f0F2 above a certain location swing a few Mhz up and down within minutes. Look at the worldmap , look for indicators on and below 6 and decide to go for it or not. The map is not a bilble to guide you, just something extra to look at !!!

Johan: agreed.. if the flux stays high then we can expect VK path to improve in early Feb. No opening here today so far. (IO90)
With this solar activity, I think that there is a very good chance of the transatlantic path opening sometime over the next 2 weeks, maybe to the Caribbean, or to W1-4/VE1, from G-land and the Low Countries, again this hunch based on my experiences in Cycle 22.

Of course you can try to send your QSL directly to Val also - but you know all the problems in the former CIS States concerning the mail. REF: VK6RO, Graham's comments. I had an email from Don VK6HK this morning confirming he heard my CQ on 107 at 1025z yesterday, at the time the band was just closing for him. Unfortunately I had no idea Don was calling, the band appeared very much dead at the time. Can anyone confirm if Don is still in OF78 (same as Feb 1992), there seems a bit of confusion on the clusters?
NW UK has been left out of virtually all Novemeber openings so far (inc Sunday 7th!) so this posting might seem far from exciting to most of Europe, but its the furthest north (and west) the MUF has been tracked so far. 73 from "the black hole" ...and I might just treat myself to another CQ soon!

Have just finished transcribing & analyzing logs from the fantastic opening to central EU last weekend. 280 QSOs of which an unbelievable 210 were with stations never worked before. Of the 70 repeat contacts, many were with DL, G, PA stations heard for the first time this cycle and it was nice to have the chance to say hello to old friends. The band was open continuously to pretty much the same area for six hours, longer than any similar openings I can remember during Cycle 22. No new countries, three new grids. JN37, KM19, KN09, all probably very common to EU Es operators but scarce here. Worked many HB9 stations never heard before and almost all were using 5-10 watts to a GP. Several DL stations reported they had no antenna for Six and were using their HF beams. Now very late in our season but hopefully we might get a bit more propagation to central and northern EU before things die until next February.

Europe on six yesterday, at about 0900 to 1000z PA SP ON DL F OZ AND POSSIBLY G STATIONS WORKED OR HEARD IN OF77 AND OF78 IN PERTH, CAPITAL CITY OF VK6.
Congratulations to VK6HK on getting to 50 countries yesterday, after about 46 or 47 years on six!.VERY WEAK SIGNALS AND ALL QSO EXCEPT 1 OR 2 WAS CW ONLY.

I live in the southern suburbs of perth and had NO qso, but the boyys up north, 6HK and 6WD had qso/s.

Guys, DON'T rely on the "near real time MUF map". It is the result of a computer program ,which is often fed with the wrong information. Right now it is based on SSN=95 but the real figure shud read SSN=342. A-index is given as 24, it should read A=30. And besides that; it's only a computer prediction, and often misses the boat by a mile.Reason for this warning is that I found out that a lot of people even point there antennae at the "hotspots!"on that map thinking that it is based on real-time measurements

ZS2SIX into DL: During the big opening to ZS on the 7th Nov
we had ZS2SIX in JN58 for 30 minutes around 1230Z. I0JX also
reported it and said it was the first time that beacon was
ever recorded in EU. Signal was peaking S9, FSK on LSB, and
the exact frequency was 50005.9 kHz. LOC KF25UX. I have
never heard anyone south of KF59. Is there avctivity at
all? 73

Solarflux 230 today. That's beginning to look like it.
We need a couple of days more for really good condx,(the cumulative effect over a couple of days is often triggering the good condx, starting at the downslope of the flux, when the k-index is going down again)
REMEMBER: tomorrow exactly 10 years ago was the best day of propagation in the last cycle : on 11/11 1989 I wkd 10 new
ones (mainly Caribean) and 360 (YES 360) USA and canadian stations. Now we can only dream of that.

Solar flux 230 tonight, wow!
To put things in perspective though, the running 27-day average
thru most of Nov 1989 was between 205 and 230, so a little way to go
yet! However a couple of weeks with the solar flux above 200
should see six opening across the pond from G-land at least.
On another note... does Fastlog have an ADIF import facility?

Hello - I've been trying out the new version of FASTLOG all evening, trying to get it to crash my system. No joy yet :-) I've been using it for quite some time, and it's got to be the easiest around. It'll run comfortably with W98 too. What I really like is the way it keeps track of various major awards..DXCC/IOTA and so on, and not forgetting WAIP. Heartily recommended to all! 73, Pete

Dear Friends, after a long time, Alberto I0XGR has decided to make a new version of his famous program "Fastlog", well known from many VHF enthusiasts.
After he has solved the "Millenium Bug" problem on the program, he asked to me to give diffusion to the program on the SIXITALIA Internet Web site.
Alberto asked to me also to verify the distribution of the software, cause he has the purpose, in the case of a large request of downloads, to realize a Windows version.
For this on the web sito has been realized a "Registration Page" ,which it's necessary to connect, before download the program cause, with the registration, will be sended an e-mail to Alberto, that will be informed about your download.
Note that in the "Download Page" has been realized several url (divided by geographical areas) to download the software; please observe the instructions !
Search "FASTLOG" in the "software" area of SIXITALI web site at the url: http://www.sixitalia.org
Thanks to all, Sergio IK0FTA

Does anyone know if and where i can find a 8.83mhz sig of a 455khz out of my ft920. I want to hook up my fftdsp prgram to the ft920 and need a wide sig. I can also put the audio out of the af out jack but with cw filter i can only see 250hz wide on my conputer hi.
For those the fftdsp prgram is a program with witch you can see very week sigs on your screen. It is used by eme operators to make the weak sigs visable so you know where to listen hi. It is wriitten by af8y and you can see it on his home page.

Well 6m on Sunday was a disaster for me. Plenty of DX stations heard here in the Middle of the UK,
but only one apeared to know how to operate a pile up effectively.
Telling the Italians to shut up will only annoy them and can only lead to the inevitable jamming.
The southern stations are nearly always going to be stronger. It is not like the last cycle when they were not on the band.
HF pile up techniques anyone ?

PAs,Fs,9A,OZs,DLs also QSO/herard.On JA side we have big problem of the endless-call.Sigs through SC are very weak.If you are being called by many JA stations and wish to make as many QSOs as possible, please announce UP and receive upper frequency.Let your transmitting freq absolutely clear.Othewise you have to specify one callsign which you want to QSO again and again.May be you have to repeat his call for three, five times or more because of the endles call.In the endless-call your sigs are completely masked.I will watch the band on this evening (08Z-) too.GL and FB DX.

F2 Propagation caused by so called SID's (Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance). It happens when a shockwave from the sun hits the ionospere of the earth (often this happens just before an Aurora takes place). When the MUF is really high (last days typicly 42 - 43 Mc) such aa SID is the last
little "PUSH" the F2 layer needs to produce full skip at
our latitude

Hi Nick.I searched through local DX cluster and found some data: Sep.29,1125Z JR6GV (PL36) reports 5B4FL in QTF 290 deg. Oct.9,0945Z JA6QGG (PM53) reports 5B4FL in 260 deg.JA6RJK reports EY8MM in 270 deg.VR2IL reports EY8MM in 330 deg(may be GC path).JR6s report JY9NX in 260 deg.Obviously you came to JR6 and JA6 via your 'Bent-Path'.A scatter is more likely to occur by islands and continent. I think the sea act as a specular surface in F2 props.

Peter, PA1SIX
- Friday, November 05, 1999 at 15:17:26 (GMT)
One should put into perspective the usefullness of these iono "maps".
The maps are "old" data, whereas the sounding data is probably less than 30 seconds old.
If you take time out to monitor one of these stations (i.e Korea, is a fine example due to the lack of anything sensible across the Indian Ocean) you would have observed the F0F2 with rapid QSB from 10.2 to 14.3 MHz over a period of minutes (update rate is 2 minutes) .
These are the potential band openings we are looking for. Having a nice map is purely academic because either the DX has gone or 50 is so open its obvious !
G4FUF <keith@micronet-uk.com>
- Friday, November 05, 1999 at 14:55:40 (GMT)
Addition (sri), all maps, except the worldmap, show foF2 beyond 14 MHz. On the Worldmap the 14 MHz area just grows if foF2 rises further.

Only from IPS Willem. I looked at Uleth b4, but that site is only giving a prediction(not based on reality). IPS is the only real-time, producing maps (delayed about 50 min.). I am mainly using the Worldmap (http://www.ips.gov.au/asfc/current/rworldmap.gif) and the Atlantic map (http://www.ips.gov.au/asfc/na_hf/index.html). Note: the atlantic map is allways showing time = 0300 UTC, this is an error by IPS.

Hello,
I saw yesterday the 4th on 48,260.2 MHz a Asiatic TV station with a logo in the upper left corner.
It didn't look like the "3" from TV3 Bangkok so I think it should came from Malaysia's RTM.
Does anyone can tell me if RTM uses a logo ?

Regarding the scatter points: The non-mathematical way if you own a globe.
Take a piece of string equivalent in length to 12000km and mark it at 1/3rd the length, i.e 4000km. Place one end at the "dx", for example QM05gg and the other at your QTH. Pull the string down tight so that the 4000k segment from the dx end is straight. This marks the potential scatter pointand the beam headings. Note the direct path at around 9000k is unlikely (at this point in the cycle) be supported by 2f2 at the latitude required.
Hope this is self explanatory.

Rick, I don't think you have 'finalised' this scatter discussion! Han, when working JR6 I must beam about 120 to 150. May I ask you where JR6s beam? Printing out GCMWIN maps it looks in any case like 'SP' is in the ocean, better than land I guess!

GM Rick.Yesterday JR6 and JA6 stations made QSO with SMs and ON.I have to make a correction. The 'Control Point' is a point in the F2 region where our sigs are refracted.'CP' is 2,000km away.In F2 scatter-mode the point of 4,000km away is the 'Scattering Point' where our sigs reach to the ground.Around the equinox we JA have high MUF in the south-west direction and hear DU,YB,9Ms almost every day.One thing you should not miss is: The real-time MUF map is not truly real-time and not almighty.Watch the band every day as possible and feel the variation of the condx. If you find anything correlative with particular opening, please report here.Today I will call CQ from 08Z. Han, JE1BMJ: Thanks for your advice. Let me finalize this scatter discussion by formulating a hypothesis:
On a day with high Solar Flux and low A+K-index one should look att the realtime FoF2 maps at http://www.ips.gov.au/asfc/current/
. If there is a light grey or white area (indicating high MUF) abt 4000km from your QTH, AND the MUF via direct path to your target is low, THEN you have a reasonably good chance of finding a scatter point for 6m?
Please let me know if I missed something here.. meanwhile best 73 from Sweden and CU tomorrow via SC!

Rick, SM7SCJ don't worry. The scatter path will also work for the medium power stations. In 1989 I had a MRF492 PA that gave me only 80 Watts. With a 5 el yagi I had many contacts with many (more than 50) JA stations. Real pile ups with those JA stations and quite some VK's aswell. If the scatter path is building up more and more QRP stations will be able to use this kind of propagation too. Some people in PA- land worked the VK's, JA's, DU's etc. with 10 Watt in a 3 el. TV channel 2 antenna. Not a DX setup ehh? Hope you will keep the mood and I look forward to the hours during scatterpath to Asia. 73,

GM Rick. The SC-path have been effectively used by 6m DXers since last cycle. But in HF the path is well known. In 1950s KDD(JA's international telephone company) researched the SC-path.15 and 21MHz BBC (London) have been observed in the direction of south-east Asia, not in GC-path.It will occur when MUF(SC)>MUF(GC).The key is "Control Point". On F2 props the control point is about 4,000km away.We have the ground at the point(around YB, 9M or XU) where our sigs are scattered.EU-VK short-path sigs are scattered by the ground, then the fraction come into JA via relatively low-loss F2 single-hop path.Total path-loss is large. If there are a station on the control point he would have S9+++ sigs from both side. The SC-path also need high SF and low AK value since F2-path is essential.GL from QM05BR.

Hi all - regarding this mornings JA/VK event there was much talk about scatter path.
If you make a great circle map centered on JA and check the JA:s beam headings you
will notice that these headings cover a vast area - from Madagascar to the west coast
of Australia. Therefore it would be interesting to have i e OH2BC:s beam headings as a
cross-bearing in order to establish a smaller scatter region. Would this be above
Himalaya or over the Indian Ocean? Could these scatter regions be used by smaller stations
like myself also, or just by KW-stations with high gain antenna systems? I have close to
no experience in scatter propagation, so more info would be nice. Perhaps scatter is
a propagation mode that has much to offer for smaller stations? Ionoscatter on 144MHz is
definitely reserved for the EME guys... Comments?

PS heard and called VK4JH and VK6JQ but no response. Band open here (JO65) btwn 0900 and 1015.

To EU and other DX stations: If you are being piled-up in CW, please listen +500Hz or more above the transmitting frequency.Stronger the sigs larger the pile on JA side.As your transmitting freq will be completely occupied with long call and tail-end call, it is quite difficult to listen your call-back. Please announce 'UP' and listen up.

Hello all, I must give a great vote of thanks to Gabriel, EA6VQ. I read about his log in the UK Six news and downloaded the programme to look at it - I was impressed. The problem was that I had a different format in my home made log - DBF format. I contacted Gabriel who kindly looked at a section of my log and made an import patch - after a few hiccups (my error) Gabriel made a full import patch - this worked fine and I have now imported my logs into Vqlog and no problems. I am impressed with all the facilities available - well done Gabriel and I fully recommend that if you are not using VQlog that you do - if you have your own home built log then approach Gabriel and he may well be able to do your own personal patch - I know that Roger G4HBA has also taken advantage of Gabriel's skills. Well done!!
