Very pleased with the quick reply by G3TEV, who shipped the 9J2BO QSL card within 5 days after sending!!!!!!!!!! I cannot imagine WHY it takes W6ORD more than TWO MONTHS to NOT REPLY AT ALL. It can't be that HOT in Palm Desert !! My advise is do not spend any money on this manager !! Bravo as well to Jimmy, W6JKV, who sent his VP2E/W6JKV like lightning !! 73's Johan - PA7MH

Potentially excellent tropo condx to LA, OZ and SM last night on 6m from GM but no sign of life from across the North Sea. Everyone appeared to be on either 2m or 70cms. LA and SM video was S5 to S9++ between 1830 and 2245 UTC. Perhaps another opportunity this evening as this anticyclone declines? 73s, Roy.

Received a letter from Peter, JW7QIA in which he says "thanks for the UKSMG support - more than 100 QSOs on the extra two noghts!". He also sent me a great colour brochure about Svalbard which says, to quote: "WEAPONS: There is always a chance you will encounter a polar bear on Svalbard, even in summer. We therefore recommend you take a gun with you on all trips outside Longyearbyen. A heavy caliber rifle is your best defence against these bears". You have been warned! A 1kw amp, a 50' antenna and an elephant gun is what you need for your 6m DXpedition to JQ68! Chris

5 continents hrd/wkd in IO83 last night. Europe of course (I'll list SM2 in JP74), followed by Asia with the 5B4 bcn hrd. 19z Peter PY5CC, South America 55/55, peaking S7 with many unanswered cq's, lasted about 15 minutes. 21z saw OX3VHF GP60 count as North America, stayed in for an hour, mainly S1 but strong peaks. FP5 bcn appeared also for a couple of minutes. Just needed Oceania!

A good number of friends from this page have asked for my 144->50 MHz transverter I published in DUBUS in 1991 & 1993. I have carried all things together again and added a number of images. Several of you have asked for the pcb board, that I do not have ... my support will be sure, if I can find someone, who likes to do the work. You will find the article besides my antenna articles on my homepage: . Any comments and suggestions are very welcome. 73 Christoph

With antenna heights above 12 meters on 50 MHz, there are fair chances that some signals will hit the first zero of the vertical radiation pattern. Today UR5TW's signal (KN39MK - 1400 km) was extremely weak on my 5-element yagi at 38 m height (having a dip at 5 deg elevation), while the signal was quite strong on a 21 MHz log-yagi at 18 meters height. Therefore it is good to have at least two antennas in use for any one band..... Tonight (July 26) a "surprise" opening occurred at 18.14 UTC with 4Z5JA (KM72LT) on 50.115 worked. Also beacons OD5SIX (KM74) heard 18.16-18.28Z, as well as 5B4CY (50.499-Cyprus) 18.18-18.42Z, keying synchronous with the 28.219 MHz beacon. The 28 MHz 5B4CY beacon has considerable hum on the FSK-tones, while the 50.499 beacon sounds "pure". TEP from Africa did not couple to our Northern latitudes. 73, "Zaba" OH1ZAA

LAST MOMENT!!! On the final approach to the 1999 Pacific trip , the Uru- guay DX Group team have made some little changes in the dates...The DXpedition will start on August 5th till 7th from Moorea Is. (OC146),French- Polynesia then will continue from August 7th. Till 17th on Rarotonga ,(OC013),South Cook Is..If transportation is available they will try to operate on Manihiki (OC014), North Cook Is. From August 17th. Till 19th. Next s step will be the island of Viti Levu(OC016)on the republic of Fiji from Au- gust19th till 23the. Finally crossing the entire South Pacific we'll move to New Zealand's north island(OC036)from 23rd till 25th but we don't believe we'll have much spare time to appear on the air.. Operators will be a couple of well known Dxers, Bert CX3AN & Mario CX4CR. We will operate CW & SSB from 160 to 6 metres, mostly lower bands with special emphasis in South America, without forgetting any other parts of the world like some- times happens... Calls will be announced upon arrival on operation sites be- cause some new rare "Virus" is growing in S.America that uses to appear some days prior to MAJOR Dxpeditions. Although final final arrangements are been made with QSL managing. It seems to be both via CX3AN and/or CX4CR..Anyway will be announced later..-73 to you all and see you on the pile-ups... GOOD NEWS: I will be in Dominica (J7) from Oct. 26 until Nov. 3. If I can get a later return flight, I will, but unfortunately, there is a world-wide Creole Music Festival during our visit which has airline flights really tied up. A good friend of mine from here in Atlanta will be going along. His name is Johhny Wolfe; his call is K4TW. He is an excellent operator and good with antennae projects. I am very pleased that this qth offers a high-speed internet connection which will let Johnny and I stay connected to the outside world. We are also taking a digital camera and will be able to put pictures up on line to your site. We will also be keeping our log on my laptop. I hate to say too much about our preparations and how much stuff we'll have........as that is a sure way to jinx our luck for F2. Will keep you posted. 73

Regarding exchangine locators with reports... It seems to have become the european standard. Although i dont agree with this exchange when there's a pile-up on a dx station, i can stand this for example.. "your 59 IO74" Right or wrong... i wouldn't mind that sort of exchange. What i dont like is when there's a new country on, and people are working the DX, and exchanging reports, locators, names, WX, feelings (wow i am happy!) etc. etc. But then why send some of the above twice when both are 59? --------------------------------------------- As to CW in the DX window.... i may be wrong on this, so comments welcome, but, CQ is CQ, but CQDX means just that.. And to me, DX is not some thing that could be worked via single hop E's. I have worked EU on CW in the DX window.. and probably will again. It's a good job that less than half of EU use the CW portion of the band. --------------------------------------------- 6m is dead here right now... 73 de Andy GD0TEP

Two questions, (1) can anyone suggest a good desk Mike for the FT920, which is "high cut" and not full of base and (2) has anyone fitted the INRAD narrow SSB filter in the 920 yet? Please reply direct on the link below.

Final status from JQ68TB: Yesterday there was fine openings to Scandinavia, and a total of 100+ QSO's are worked during my stay here (SM, OH, ES, OZ and LA's). Sorry for the DL's and PA's who heard me. I tried my best to listen for all of you. No sign of G stations either. Thanks to Chris and UKSMG for making this possible - and to Stefan, LA0BY, for helping a lot. I was glad to hand out so many "new ones" - and very glad to meet OZ7DX and my brother, OZ1NET, the two persons who originally talked me into doing this. Maybe I'll stop over out here next time?? It was fun. But I just don't understand you VHF folks: Why are you spending time in a pile-up exchaging locators. Don't you think it will be on the QSL card??????? Finally: Sorry to the guys who complained about me moving on the band. I had heavy QRM (up to S7) moving slowly around 095 to 103. I just tried to stay as close to my scedule as described on my web site. Now I'm going further up north (Ny Ålesund). WX is perfect. Blue sky, 7C and 10knts from north (that means no fog). NO 50MHz radio on-board, hi. 73 and thank you to all of you.

QSO's are made from JQ68TB - but Murphy is still around! 9 QSO's (six different stations) was worked yesterday between 2158z and 2225z in CW and SSB (OH and SM3). Due to wheather change and Murphy I was QRV later than planned - and all CW was generated by hand. My keyer went QRT after 10-15 minutes. I'll be QRV again today (LAST DAY) between 1800z and 2300Z (later if condx). I'm using the JW7SIX QRG (50.047) to call CQ in CW and will move to 50.100 if openings. If you work me on 50.047 CW, please just exchange call and report. It is in the Beacon segment of the band. I'll not work SSB on this QRG. If you would like me to QSY to 50.100 just send "SSB" in CW and I'll QSY. CU! 73 from Kapp Linné, Svalbard.

....About A61AH's keyer... I told with Almur at HamRadio99, he said that have a TV station very close to him in Europe direction, so often he need to get quite strong signals in order to break down video carrier QRM. That could be also a a reason because he didn't replay our calls.... P.S.:In the same occasion he buy two long-yagi 5el elements; soon probably, his signal will be stronger.

Heard A61AH/keyer yesterday evening around 17.00utc for 5 minutes or so. I have called CQ a couple of times in order to try and break in. I am afraid Almur was not close to his rig as nothing happened. That is, as far as I could hear because local station were starting to call CQ as well in an endless and apparently aimless manner ... I hope Almur puts his keyer on as often as he can as it is a proven tool to generate succesful DX contacts.

Good opening to Africa today. Started around 15:05 with the 3C TV rising to s9+. At 15:10 I logged the TR0A beacon on .048 to S5. At 15:29 copied ZS6DN on .050 at S4 - both gone by 15:39.At 16:12 found 7Q7SIX on .002 - rose to S7, at 16:29 found 9J2BO - S9!.Also ZS6DN at S4. - this changed to ZS6BTW on .043 at 16:37 - up to S4.. At 16:58 V51VHF came in - up to S9. At 17:04 put out a call and first Z23JOR came back and then Z21FO - both to S4 with QRN. At 17:22 9J2BO came in again to S9 - all faded by 17:43.

Oops - missed another opening to USA! Had a lot of fun with short-skip Es over the weekend, especially on 18/7/99 - from 18.13 to 19.14 worked OZ x 1, PA x 15, DL x 10, SP x 1, ON x 7 and LX2DX. ON and LX were my first new countries in 1999. Thanks for the pile-up guys, now I know how the REAL DX must feel. Working split would have been a lot easier, looking at it from the other side for a change, especially when waiting for everyone to stop calling. Another feature of working pile-ups no-one else seems to have raised: DO IT QUICKLY - conditions NEVER last long enough for everyone to get through (Which is why I didn't ask for your names). Still it was good fun, thanks to everyone who called in - maybe I'll get that extra 2nd IF RX to operate splits (thanks for the idea).

Jimmy, W6JKV and Dick, K5AND are in the process of thinking about where to go for their next 6m DXpedition which is planned for October 1999. There are three regions of the world that they could go to: (a) Western Pacific – where a possibility is Yap (near Guam) (b) West Africa – S92 a rare possibility? (c) Caribbean – where a possibility is J8, J7 0r J3. Jimmy has asked me to undertake a poll to see what the ‘hot’ countries are. Of course, the countries should be reasonably ‘safe’ from a political and ‘comfortable’ from a amenity perspectives. Let us know your suggestions for these three regions by e-mail to myself. I will collate them and forward the results onto Jimmy and Dick. If you are aware of any other Dxpeditions coming up in the next two years let us know as this will prevent possible clashes. A possibility for a future summer trip could be OX. 73

Thanks to the support from some very enthusiastic 6 meters operators and the UK Six Meter Group, everything is now ready for some 50 MHz activity from Svalbard. I'm departing for Svalbard tomorrow and plan to operate 6 meters from JQ68TB, being QRV from Sunday (or Monday) and the following two to four days. Details are published on my web site ttp://www.qsl.net/la7qia (and mirrored http://home.c2i.net/dx ). I hope for some good openings and to work as many of you as possible.73 de Peter, LA7QIA / JW7QIA.

Update on JW7QIA: You can find all the details of the trip on Peter's web page - including contact info - http://www.qsl.net/la7qia/ Peter is going to be there for at least two nights but will try for four (possibly including Sunday night). For lots of reasons which we will not go into here (all to do with accessibility & not being able to afford a helicopter & having to use a boat rather than a jet ski because it is summer), it is not possible to predict when Peter will be QRV and exactly how long he will be there. Look out for the beacon and if you hear it follow the instructions on the page! Good luck! (and don't forget to tell everyone else!) Chris

Don't work by the numbers ! Egads , you may as well take a list of "last two" if you are going to do that. Working split is nice, however. In regards to various comments seen here. I, too, have one or two 6m setups only capable of a very small split (IE: RIT maybe), so it would make sense that unless you are super rare DX with 1,000's calling, just go split 2-3 Kcs and see how that works. Many RIT's will cover this, or a good op will occassionally listen "close-in" for those that only have RIT (or a single VFO!) Ciao=Mike

Re: Split freq's with non-dual VFO homebrew stuff.. I also ran into the problem with insufficient split tuning range with my (old) FT225 + homemade transverter listening to PA3HEN/MM. Solved it with a 2nd 2m set e.g. IC202 connected via a splitter at the transverters RX-IF output. Now every split tuning range within the IC202 tuning range is possible. Good luck on 6, best 73. Ed.

Re: splits and calling by numbers: QSB is ALWAYS worst when YOUR number comes up, and so many stations who have already worked the DX can't count either.... Split freq's are great if you have a dual VFO rig, but it's a bit tougher when you have to wobble to and fro each time you change over - eg try using an IC202 plus transverter - still, I did manage to work PA3HEN/mm that way. Hard work but worth the effort! 73 and see you on your split freq +/- 1kHz!

I'd like to echo the comments regarding Theo's (PA3HEN) Operation(s), Why are his pile-ups so much more orderly than others? Obvious to me, he has a good operating style and WORKS SPLIT! Working by numbers soon turns into a total mess, as if often demonstrated.

Bob, 9A3JI. Sorry you did not get CU8AO. My comments were aimed at Gs. He not DX, he not rare in G. Calling on 50110 -I guess as the Azores are "in Europe" no Eu stations should have called him - they should have all waited untill he QSYd to .120 later. "DX" working split is at least some of the answer. PA3HEN/mm knows this. 73 and GL next time.

With Ref to the pile-ups, maybe it would help if the operators that don't need the square or county waited. There is nothing worse than sitting in a pile-up only to hear, nice to work u agn om, when you have been trying for years to get that contact in the log! Dear Friends I have question about QRV frequency for French stations. Can French stations QRV below 50.200MHz?? I remember French stations can be operated upper than 50.200MHz when I visited FX4SIX in 1995. After then, situation would be changed?? Waiting for answer for my question. And It will be better that YOU receive split frequency, when you QSO with JAs. JAs can be opetare up to 54MHz, so you can listen any freuency other than 50.110MHz. When Europian opening, 50.110 in JA is so much CONFUSED!!! You have to look for CLEAR frequency and SAY "Now listening 50.XXXMHz" even you QRV on 50.110MHz. I would like to inform all Yaesu FT 650 owners', who are still looking for narrow CW filter (XF455M6), that you can also install the old XF455C for FT 102. The case is the same, the frequency is 454.2KHz (the dedicated filter freq. is 454.1KHz), it work very well, and first of all it's very cheap! I find my filter to the HAM-RADIO 99, at only 50DM!

Hello to all. Many stations have recognized the propagation between JA-EU and JA-NA until this weekend. I think it is not an multi-hop Es propagation because it has features such as (1) Occurring almost every day, (2) Occurring correlative with high solar-flux value*, (3) seemingly have been disturbed by high A-index value and/or active Es, (4) Occurred around summer solstice*, (5) Occuerd two locations sharing daylight at F2 height (e.g.JA-NA and JA-EU), (6) etc. (*: need more observation across a few season, years or cycle.) It has features similar to F2 propagation around equinox. I am believing that it is the firstling of the autumnal F2 props at sun-spot maximum and expecting explosive openings on next equinox around the world. See you tomorrow Sunday.

Perhaps this should be on the "Moans and groans" page? UY5 called CQ on CW 50.102 - A G3 called CQ-DX on top of him, that's unfortunate, but part of the game. He was answered by a DL (i've nothing against DL's but, come on, DL>G is not DX!) The G3 then worked him?!?! All the time the UY5 was calling CQ under them. A DJ called CQ 1/2 a KC up, nothing wrong in that.... just made things a little harder. Neil - G0JHC got in there and worked the UY5, i heard the UY5 so called him. I worked him, and exchanged reports. Not easy when other stations called the UY5 while the UY5 was TX'ing. Not quite sure what to think of that one? Others then tried to wrk him, Tony, GW4VEQ was one i heard... Only while he was trying, an OM station called Tony on top of the UY5!!! I didn't think that "UY5 de GW4" was the same as CQ.. Figure that one out. And to top it all, i was also called by some one. All on top of the DX. On a final note, in my opinion CQ-DX means just that, not "CQ some thing you can work every other day".

TV CARRIER FREQS: If you stay in the shadow of a channel E2 transmitter, please help me to identify the unmarked carriers in the list below, all received in the Johannesburg area in the last months. IDs are pencilled in and are my interpretations from band conditions. I have developed a method for accurately measuring the carrier frequencies of TV Transmitters. Please ask me to e-mail a text file on how to do it if you can help. Required is a SSB rig capable of receiving WWV on 15 MHz, and 48 MHz, and a simple audio frequency meter (or sound card with suitable software). HELP FOR POWER AMPLIFIER. I recently bought a russian surplus power amplifier using a single GU43B and having a big rotary coil supposedly tuning the range 30-80 MHz. I have seen this type of amplifier on sale at the Friedricshafen hamfest for a number of years, so it should be fairly common. I am looking for the schematic diagram, so I am asking whether anyone of you has got it, and the conditions to get a copy of it. 73

Hi, It was good to work many of you during my recent holiday in Crete. One or two QSL cards are now starting to arrive at my home address. This is not so good! Please note that the correct QSL route for SV9/G4VXE is via G3SWH. If you have already sent a card to my address, I will orward it in due course to Phil, but you will find it much quicker to bypass the middle man! Also, if you would like a QSL card via the bureau - you don't NEED to send me one. Just send an e-mail to tim@ukgateway.net with the details of the QSOs that you would like confirming and I will consolidate the requests and pass them to Phil. Your co-operation is appreciated. 73, Tim G4VXE

JW7QIA QRV from JQ68TB !!! Peter, LA7QIA, just informed me by phone that he will be going to Kapp Linne, the location of JW7SIX. He plans to be there for two days sometime between July 18-22. He will bring an IC706 and intends to use the JW7SIX beacon antenna. His callsign on Svalbard will be JW7QIA. Peter can be reached by email at dx@c2i.net, at home and perhaps in Longyearbyen, but not at Kapp Linne. Peter will monitor the band from time to time. During the first 10 minutes of each half hour between 18-24 UTC every evening he will call CQ in CW on the beacon frequency 50.047 MHz. In case of a band opening he will QSY to 50.100 MHz where he will run both CW and SSB contacts, whatever will be most efficient. Outside this 10 minute period he will monitor the band intensively, or re-connect the JW7SIX transmitter. Personal note: If you should hear the beacon between 18-24 UTC on these days you may alert me by phone (+47-90114432). I may be able to relay a message to Peter. A limiting factor for Peter is the cost of accommodation at Kapp Linne (about 900 NOK per night). If somebody should be willing to provide financial support, Peter could probably stay 2-3 evenings longer. I wish both you and Peter good luck with this activity. This is a unique chance to work a new country. JW7SIX has been received many times over the last weeks (see a list of spots at http://www.qsl.net/la0by/JW-log.htm, will be updated this evening). 73, Stefan (LA0BY) Email: 73, Stefan (LA0BY) Email: la0by@qsl.net

Re:G0OFE. Well, the actual minimum date (between #22 and #23) is offcourse based upon the new cycle's spots near the solar poles taking over from the old cycle's ones near the solar equator. Moving this date 9 month seems a bit too much. However who says that #23 isn't going to last 12 years. If so, the SSN is likely to rise even slightly further. We'll just have to wait and see.

Ref Peter PA1SIX's comment on Cycle 23 - a couple of observations: the minimum phase of Cycle 22/23 had a very long flat bottom - while the official minimum was in may 96, it was another 9 months before activity suddenly started to rise. If the actual minimum is "moved " to the beginning of 1997, (meaning a Cycle 22 lenght of a little over 10 years, nearer to normal, then maybe Cycle 23 is not lagging as much as we thought. Compare also the massive jump in sunspot numbers in C22 and C21 at around the 27-month mark - and at around the 36-month mark in Cycle 23. Clutching at straws maybe , but perhaps food for thought? Cycle #23, something in store!? Looking at http://www.dxlc.com/solar/cyclcomp.html cycle #23 has made some major progress to catch up, or at least try, with the last two. The SSN has risen 64 points in one 2-month run, which is more than happened in #22 or #21. Moreove this means that the SSN has actually doubled. Is this the turn-around we've been waiting for, I don't know, but it surely should help improve the F2-muf later this year. Hopes up, yes a little.

Re the QSL cards.... I also get lots of cards direct, for me, MD0V, GD4IOM. Those with envelopes and IRC's or $ get answered that day, those without an envelope get theirs re-used (not very tidy, but it works) Those who dont send any postage end up in the buro pile. I deal with buro cards about once a year, normaly in the winter. New countries (and squares) for me, i send direct with both postage and an addressed reply envelope. And to date, i am only outstanding 3 or 4 cards. PP% being one of them, the others would you believe are for JN 80 and 81 !! Re R1MVA: as posted in June on these pages: Upon my question why 6m is not included in the upcoming R1MVA expedition, the following answer was given: "The reason is that the Russian Telecom authorities did not allow 6m operation this time. It interferes with their TV reception. Sorry about that. I would have liked to see 6m included and productive as it is now. 73 Jukka OH2BR". As Jukka is one of the organizer of this expedition I guess it is the truth. On the other hand, if condition are really good you might be able to hear their 5th harmonic of 10.111 MHz = 50.555 MHz (outside the Dutch allocation of 50 MHz). GL.

JA6WFM heard Bo SM7FJE on 50.110 on the 4th of July at 0735z with RST 559. Also some other JA6-stations should have heard him. Sorry we could not hear any JA signal as the QRM from Russian TV station was very strong all the morning. Europe taking a well deserved rest now after a very busy weekend. B.t.w. is there any activity in the fields DO, EO, FO and GO. I ever worked VO2AG in FO, but looking at the path, the other fields should be workable. They are in line with our path to TF/OX. Even a beacon, for starters should be helpfull. RE Bob, WA1OUB, explain your statement, cycle #22 didn't produce great ES around the peak, just at the start. And furthermore activity has risen a lot, and more stations are willing to go against the odds (like JAOH), so more exotic DX should be the result !!

VP2E/W6JKV... There are very different conditions beetwen North Europe and Italy. Yesterday In Rome I heard Jimmy only for few seconds and very weak. I heard many N.E. qso's audio recordings in Internet and I compared with my personal recording made on june 28th with Jimmy and Dick (K5AND), (look for this http://www.sixitalia.org in infonews pages) and the signal in Italy is weaker. 73 and good dx, Sergio, IK0FTA.

Reply to GD4TEP (but I put this info also the last month) Speaking with in june I ask to Z23JOR for his mail address. The Qsl for Dirk can be sent to: Z23JOR, via ZARS Headquarters, Box 2377, Harare, Zimbabwe and I think also ok via bureau. 73 de Sergio, ik0fta.

Again: came home, turned on the radio ..and there again VP2E/W6JKV peaking 599 cw /ssb ! but did not call cause..worked before... A very good job they did there helping many with this new one in the "last chance weekend". They picked up the weak signals easily and stayed in cw to prevent chaos. Now you see! a good beam and reasonable power realy works better then the normal indoor caribean dipoles... Or what else can explane that only kp4 sometimes was heard in EU ? Okay there are other important and pleasant things in live besides sitting behind the radio.. I just wonder when can I say yessssss! one day this year? Hearing OX beacon every year since 1989 now but never ever met a real human OX yet..

Jimmy VP2E/W6JKV was in here for more than 4 !!!!! hours fom over 7300 km. Unbelievable. Not much shorter was KP4BZ in. Often heard him CQing without takers. Also K1SZ (or SG?) weak, KP4EIT and KP4A. Those I did not call because I worked them some years ago. 73 Christoph DF9CY

Many heard from Eu today calling VP2E/W6JKV. Much listening. Only worked 20 stations from 9A,DL,EA,HB9,I,OK & PA. Several weak G's heard in Jimmy's pileups. Now, let me ask about the link between Solar Activity and Es! :-) Best 73, Bob

My thoughts about contesting on 6m: can't we just add a rule that ALL contest Q's MUST be made ABOVE 50.150 or so... That way we keep at least 50.110 to 120 clear for DX... What about the 30kHz between 120 and 150?.... Lets use that as buffer for the splattering sigs from some stations... 30kC should be enough hihi..... However, in the back of my a rule like the above mentioned already exists... Just not sure... 73 es GD DX, gd luck in the contest! Frank, ON9CFB

Re: ZS6DN/b into EU this morning. We saw the cluster spots and strained our ears but heard nothing here in ZS1 except some good "pings" via ms from the V51VHF/b beacon. We have a couple of ops here in Cape Town that monitor the band CONDX as close to 24hrs as we can. We have our radios "parked" on 50.110, listening mostly. As soon as there is anything happening, we immediately allert 2 others, and those alert another 2 etc. etc. Openings to our part of the country is so rare that the most needs to be made of any sort of opening, we're not picky...HI HI. Andy,Re TF opening. At one point I'm sure TF5SJ said he was 8km from Akureyri which would almost certainly put him in IP05. Good opening to the artic region last night. Beacons heard were OX3SIX which was s9 plus for several hours, VE8BY,LA7SIX,OH9SIX and later on OX3VHF also made an appearance. Plenty of TF activity and several northern LA's but no OX's around. OY9JD was also a good signal. There seemed to be plenty of European activity despite the late hour.

SM6CMU/3 - SM6CMU/2 - OH9/SM6CMU - LA/SM6CMU I will be active from northern Scandinavia on 6M as well as on 2M from July 24 to August 11. I have after several years of trying been granted a special license for 6M operation from several areas in northern Sweden and will activate locators JP74, 75, 86, 96 and others. I will pass through northern Finland to locators KQ20-30-40-50 etc in northern Norway. 20-25 different locators will be activated. Equipment will be IC706MKII and IC706MKIIg, 3 EL MFJ for 6M and 9EL 5HF for 2M on a 8M telescopic tower, amplifier on 2M 190watts. A vertical antenna is used for monitoring while in motion. Operation on 2M meteorscatter will be on 144.167 from 22UT 1800LPM and DTR for receiving (max 2500LPM). Will continue as long as there are callers. Will also daily be on 50.167 (scatter) at 21-22UT as well as from 06UT. Will monitor 50.110 whenever possible. Last years trip resulted in some 400 QSOs on 6M and 100 QSOs on 2M from 23 different locators. Announcement on packet and Internet clusters will be made but only after arrival which usually is late and only if there is a GSM telephone connection available. Plans for the next days will however be announced as early as possible. Your spotting on clusters will be appreciated. 73 Ingo SM6CMU

TF3FK, TF3BM and TF3AO/2 were 59 here last night. Also what looks like a new beacon?? on 50.012, OX3SIX was 599 plus a little. Following the CEPT discussion, I would like to take the opportunity to clarify once more the 6m situation in SV. Although 6m is now released to all SV operators without a special license, NO operation is allowed to ANY foreign operator visiting Greece. Ministry of Comms has clearly exempted 6m from CEPT or any other temporal license granted to foreigners. That is, any SV1-9/…… operation on 6m is ILLEGAL.

OH1ZAA/9 is planning a short tour above the Polar Circle. Arrival by train will be around 08.00 UTC on July 3d, Saturday in KP17. Short peeks into KP27,18,28... then sliding toward the North Pole, KP08, KP09. Probably passing through Northern Norway, with blocked horizons toward Europe. Maybe Monday in KQ30 as OH1ZAA/9 and then down the Eastern border through rare squares like KP54,53,52,51..... Probably back at OH2-base by Thursday. Did copy the JW7SIX (JQ68TB) beacon twice in KP01 last weekend, so let's hope for some more skip from the Arctic. Preferred frequencies 50.135 and 50.141, DX-calls on 50.110 ...... Till soon, I hope.... 73, "Zaba" OH1ZAA/2 >> OH9 ..

VE9MS/B update...... Today, after 2 years of procrastinating, I went to the VE9MS/b site and replaced all the antennas for 10, 6 & 2m. I should have picked a cooler day-I know it was >100degrees on that tar roof, hi! ==On 10m, it now runs a sloping dipole @ 45degrees (up 30') towards EU (was HZ loop@20') ==On 6m, it now runs a Ringo Ranger Vertical (base at 25') (was 2 loops@20/25') ==On 2m (***biggest change***) it now runs 10 el, HZ yagi bmg NW and elevated ~6-7 degrees --for AU indicator (was HB Halo) QRG's: 10m=28.241.2MHz, 5w 6m=50.065.5MHz, 1w (more power later this summer after PS repaired) 2m=144.291.5MHz, 15w All use the same (FSK) ID-er supplied by VE6XT and send: "de ve9ms/b ve9ms/b fn65 k" It is hoped the better antennas, up slightly higher, in fn65qx will aid in the HF/VHF community in their radio activities. It is ESPECIALLY hoped that now that the 2m bcn is sporting a gain antenna to the NW, that this will become a nice AU indicator for w1/ve1. Reports via Email most welcome. 73-Mike ve9aa (ve9ms/b op)

Enno is quite correct about the footnote. Thanks for picking me up on that. Guess I should have said, CEPT doesnt give you the right to operate FULL STOP, on 6m unless that country has independantly decided to allocate 6m in the "standard licence without restriction".

ENNO You are wrong about France CEPT. Read the article of Dennis PE1PZS in Electron. He requested information from the French authorities and got the answer I quoted some announcements ago. 73 Willem

Hello to All! We are planning quite massive expedition this summer with our Viimsi RC ES2WX to island of Kihnu KO18XC Our activities lies between 19 july(evening) till 27 july(evening). The main interest is Estonian VUSHF Open Field Day 24/25 july.During the contest we are using brand new call just for that contest ES0X. Before and after the contest we are using call ES2WX/0 and our personal calls/0. Yeam members are ES2RJ/0,ES2NA/0,ES2QH/0,ES1MW/0 and others. We are active on HF(including 20m VHF-net),50MHz,144MHz,432MHz and 1296MHz.One of the working positions located at the top of the southern lighthouse of Kihnu about 30m ASL.Other two working positions located inside of the tent on ground. On 50MHz we are using FT-847 and IC-706MK2 100w and 5 el Yagi for one and 3 el Yagi for second position. On 144MHz we are using TS-790e+PA abt 350w output,FT-847+PA abt 500W output and IC-706MK2 bearfoot. Antennas that band on different positrions are 9 el,9 el and 8el yagis. On 432MHz we are using TS-790E+PA abt 230w output, and TS-847 bearfoot. Antennas on this band for two different positions are 19 el Yagis. On 1296MHZ we are using TS-790e+PA 30w output and an 44el Yagi. For MS we have OH5IY software,DTR recorder and AF-keying.We hope for good propagation, good weather and propagation. After expedition(about the end of august) look for ES2WX homepage for info and pictures. Adress is http://www.automaatika.ee/es2wx. There are also many other information and rules for Estonion Open Field Day 1999. Please also spread this above information to other hams. 73! de Andy, ES2NA

Re: CEPT & 50 MHz. Neil, you are incorrect. If you read the text of the recommendation you will conclude that 50MHZ is included, provided that 50MHz is allocated in the standard license without any local/regional restrictions to amateurs of the country visited. E.g. you can work on 50 MHz in PA, W, OZ, etc. but not in F as in France 50 MHz is allowed by virtue of an exceptional add-on with regional restrictions to the standard license. GL.

50MHz isnt included under CEPT. FULL STOP. Some countries do however allow visitors to operate. I think Italy is now one? The UK is another (so long as you have a licence to operate on 6m in your own country.) Are there any others where you dont have to obtain extra paper work first? Perhaps readers of this page could let us all know?

Does anyone know if 6m operation is permitted in Austria under CEPT T/R 61-01, Class 2? The RSGB are less than helpful on this one!

Just returned from Montserrat. Six was very poor. Worked HP2CBW (Panama)ssb within minutes of erecting 4 el yagi on Tuesday 15 June. Then NOTHING except local reassurance from V44KAA ( on St.Kitts & also looking for EU!)that signal was going out! He reported I was a week too late! He had worked N.America & S. America previous week on daily basis! My calls CW/SSB 100watts unanswered until small opening to East Coast/Florida/Texas on 25 June. Even then held first qso for over 15 minutes into Delaware before any more stations were heard.Very very weak R3-4/ S1 KP4 beacons heard nearly every day. Kept switching to Six during several excellent world-wide 10m openings but nothing heard in VP2M! Just possible I will be returning in August to VP2M so may be another opportunity?
