other stations in JO23. Nothing that time here in JO22. I heard the first bits and pieces
10 minutes later and worked Alan at 14.44Z Than the real opening started with S9 sig's at
15.10. Good work Alan. Signals last till 15.50. No other stations heard till 15.00. After

PA3EUI, PETER Short of the using the calculations, there is a really great website,
that takes all the work out of it. http://www.softcom.net/users/kd6dks/quad.html will
allow you to plug in a frequency, and and it does the rest. The typical formula runs:
1030/freq. in MHz for REFLECTOR; 1005/freq. in MHz for DRIVER; and finally 984/freq. in
MHz for the DIRECTORS. I have in the past made coax connections via direct method (worst)
and the bead type balun (ala W2DU), and found that any and all unwanted currents on the
coax line disappeared, and all SWR problems went away. I have used the simple formula for
a 7 ele. culical quad for six, and it is very sharp. If you have other questions Peter,
give me a buzzzz... 73 de W4ABC

I would like to get a general idea regarding how many MORE countries have authorized
six meter operation since the last cycle. I know someone must have this info at their
fingertips. It doesn't have to be exact but a ballpark figure. (approximate). Any help
would be appreciated. Also, the C6AFP beacon in FL16 continues to run flawlessly. One watt
on 50062 to a Ringo six meter vertical. It is heard in the US all the time. It amazes me.
Thanks to WZ8D for making the beacon possible. The only thing I did was give him space in
the attic and the use of my callsign! We just had about two weeks of the most far-out
tropo in the US I have ever heard. Six, two and 432. I worked stations in Miami yesterday
on 432 from EM55 (TN) that were pegging the meter on my IC-475. I am only using 19 element
antenna. There has also been very unusual long-haul ground propagation on SIX meters
allowing many of us to grab closer grids that are virtually impossible on eskip. 73, Steve

Solar flux was 89 yesterday, and still dropping. This is a value close to solar minimum
averages. From my experience the correlation with long haul (up to 9000 km) sporadic E is
quite good during low flux in the Arctic Summer (1986 - 1988; several Trans-Atlantics even
down into Florida). Note that the two sides of the Sun are very different right now, and
that flux may be up to 140 in a week from now (however, no guarantees given). It is safest
now to claim any 50 MHz band condition more on geometric tilts than absolute ionization.
During high flux a Europe to CX/LU path is very possible. Good luck !! 73, Zaba ..........

Thanks for the warning Ken. It has not gone unnoticed that /EA6 and EA8 operations
count and all the fanfare when Spain announced the FIRST LEGAL operations. In my opinion
the only legal QSO's with Spanish stations can occur under EH prefixes. If the ARRL allows
other operations when no licences were produced, thats there problem, but shows the
inconsistent and double (triple) standards that exist in our hobby. QUESTION. How then can
stations claim to be one or two better than those less fortunate, and claim illegal QSO;s.
For example all BV contacts vefore 1992 are illegal and yet many VKs including me have BV
contacts counted for DXCC. For some this might not be a problem, for those of us on 100 or
101 we are in a precarious position of being demoted below the quailifying 100 if someone
takes it to mind to do just that. SSSHHHH dont tell anyone and we will get away with it,
Bah Hum Bug WFWL doesnt seem to work real well does it.

Scotty VK4JSR wants to know when peter H44PT is considering activating H44 (is it next
year) as they are planning a dx trip there. ZL TV on F2 b/scatter from Pacific today and
high white noise level from sun. Be aware that this condition makes it real hard to hear
long distance DX and paths to Africa (long path) and Europe from VK3 are always up sun and
often white noise wipes out incoming DX and you have to wait for the sun to get out of
your beam or set.

FB on the 50.110 Live PAge-WAY COOL! Today when I dialed in, Chris was tuning the radio
around, letting me listen to all the juicy DX I can only dream about here. Yesterday I
worked my first F-related DX since Jan/Feb 1992 ! (tell me that isn't a long time to be
faithful to my mistress - Miss 6m band.) Anyway, CX6DH was in from 2158-2258 off and on
only on SSB. I understand there were very loud LU's also into VE1 and Eastern W1, but they
were not heard here. Most probable an Es-F link as 1 hour after I worked Julio, I heard
W4's in EM82/83, in Eastern GA., which is just about the usual velocity for the drifting
of the Es clouds fromWest to East as heard here. WOW! My first new country in 2 years.

All the stations I worked in Western Russia were disallowed except those sanctioned by
JARL. IN were EK0, UZ0CWW and RZ0CZZ Out were 4L6 UL7 and LY1. ARRL said they were not
approved for 6M and I am lead to believe that since Russian federation licences have been
impossible to get according to an EM8 who was just in VK and was a Russian official. So
whats the score can we work East and West Russians and have them count for DXCC or not,
the truth please not some fanciful belief.

Udo DK5YA has every right to be frustrated to say the least with the response he had
from the Greek authorities. I am not a government official and I dont feel
responsible for their irresponsibility but I will try to clarify few things for the shake
of our fellow 6m operators: After the recent decision of the ministry of Comms.which has
been signed, distributed and is in force, the FACTS are: 1. 6m has been released to all SV
operators. 2. The allocation is on a secondary basis. The Military people are the main
users. 3. The allocation is for propagation studies, and a report has to be handed in at
the end of the year. 4. No mention is made for foreign operators, but the way that the
decision is written it seems a NO situation. The above was a result of long and delicate
negotiations and personal contacts as well as efforts made from the Greek Amateur Radio
Society, and what weve got as a result is not ideal, does not clearly refer to
CEPT/reciprocal matters but was the best we could get. The conflicting info given to Udo
was probably given by people either trying to help (1st answer) or ignorant of the new
rules (2nd answer)! The Amateur Radio Authority has been recently de-centralised and most
responsibilities were shifted to peripheral municipal departments of the ministry. As a
result we have many people dealing with amateur radio among their other duties and never
heard of what is all about (an SV 6m operator was told that they will change his callsign
to a CB call, and he was frustrated too!!). This is the truth and nothing but the truth
according to Greek Government official papers. If there are more "truths" I
cannot speculate as we live in an EC but Mediterranean country and everything is
possible!! Well sorry again but it seems that we have a price to pay for the
progress

I´m the one trying to get a licence for 50 for our SV9-Expedition to KM35bd from 24.
May until June 7th. 4 weeks ago Greek officials said to me on the phone that we will have
a 2 week licence for that certain exped. . Today I received a letter from the Greek
Administration Of Posts And Telecommunications and they say that 6 "hasn´t been
allocated to any Amateur service. Our administration has temporary allocated this zone
recently to a few number of radio amateurs only for special proposes as regards the
propagation study in our coutry, and not for DX". Not for DX!!!! This letter says
that 6 isn`t open to all SV-Hams as published in mid-April by SV1EN!! What the hell is

is within the next 10 days for sure. GL ALL! Have a nice weekend. - and if we DO see condx
across the pond, you can bet your bottom (insert your own currency here) that I, and
others will not be on 50.110 SSB listening to all the inter-EU, and inter-NA QSO's taking
place. Perhaps find me on 50.101, 50.093.5, etc.... 50.110 sucks for anything other than a
good place to monitor. Shame some of the rare DX will only listen and transmit here. We

E layer what E layer. You dont get much E layer during solar cycles dont your remeber
back in 1989/90/91/92. You now see the true limitations of the EU system coming to the
fore. Down under with only a few countires within 5000 kM all of our serious dx working is
greater than 8000 or so kM a fact i have been telling you guys for years. If you think its
hard up there try a stint in the South pacific where if you are lucky you will work 5 or
10 countires per year not per season. Why do think it has taken 20 years to work DXCC and
there are only 5 DXCC holders in Oceania, 3 on KH6 one in KG6 and myself??? And yet
Oceania is 1/4 of the surface of the earth. Be thankful for what you have, but dont lose
sight of the greater task ahead this cycle to work to Oceania and beyond.

Comments noted. Solar noise is rendering weak signal working towards Asia impossible.
We have E extended to F daily but the signals are just too weak to bother with, besides
every country I hear I have worked. Even VR2 is China which I have confirmed. Maybe Id
better go on an expedition. How about KL7? Worked KH6 on 28 Mhz late this afternoon at

I like Steve's notes below! however, think these one's out! PY5CC has just 13 countries
on his land mass of South America. He has the best propagation in the World and will knock
the score up to 200 easily. He currently has 155! W6BYA on the West coast USA is 4th in
the World for worked Grid Fields. 3 JA's hold the top grid Fields worked in the World, 1st
2nd and 3rd places! So it's not all in Europe Steve et al, if we could just get into the

things are harder on "6". :-)

The quest is the quest is the quest. All I read about is countries worked. As though
that is the ultimate and only operating achievement in store for 6M ops. Spare a thought
for people in countries like the USA and Australia and Russia which are at least 3 time
zones wide. How many of you EU ops would stay motivated in a country like VK with a couple
of countires per year. And please dont group the East Coast US achivements as being
indicative of the W6 operating ability or the VK6 contacts as being indicative of the
potential for the rest of VK. Someone at the UKSMG conference asked me how many countries
do you have now? Like the HF fraternity in my opinion some of you guys have been blinded
by the quest for new countries as though it is the only criteria. You can only have ONE
DXCC even if you have 200 or 300 or 350 countries so spare a thought for the little people
who by a quirk of geographic fate are denied the country count that some of the countries
you guys are stacking away like brownie points. Its a bit like me saying you havent made
it on 6M until you work Antarctica. Is that a realistic hurlde for someone in the northern
hemisphere? I dont think so. So please stop elevating some people cos they have more
countries and putting down others who have just made 100. It is an inequitable way of
measuring performance.

To Peter PA3EUI. Guess it's hard for the aurora to compete with your wife, but I can
tell you that a good time for auroral backscatter is 14z -17z. We have worked PA-stns here
on April 26 and May 2nd at that time. Moreover 05 - 06z on the May 5th. Good luck!

To all PA-stations : Als er openingen via TEP/F2 zijn zou ik graag zo veel mogelijk
gedetailleerde rapporten ontvangen. Dit om de statistieken (sinds cycle #21) zo compleet
mogelijk te houden. Een éénvoudig lijstje voldoet al. Van belang zijn : begintijd
(UTC)-eindtijd (UTC)- Call DX-station.
voorbaad dank. Bij vragen even een mailtje sturen !(sorry for non-english text)

Ignorance is bliss??? The following message of annoyance posted on the JA cluster
speaks for itself. FROM JA TO VK 50. 0000 980504 SSB QSO I don't need domestic reports of
VK. I think the significance of the last night events escape this cretin. However if the
JA;s dont want dreary stuff posted then we wont post anything simple as that. Why is it
that the movers and shakers of this world attract so much flack. As we say in this country
the DOOOOOOOOOGooders or thought police who would have us comply with some unknown rules
even if it destroys the hobby. Trouble is they keep uping the stakes and moving the goal
posts. By the way we actual had a GROUP working on 50.110 last night. Hope eveyone enjoyed
the auroral conditions even if it wasn't long haul dx it was pretty exciting, Im sorry we
cant oblige the JA and post rare dx, though I reckon KVZK TV in the middle of the night is
pretty rare DX. 73...

I just looked at the european magnometer data from the past 24 hours and was amazed
about the fact that the geomagnetic storm had completely missed us. Nice K-indices from
Boulder with some 6-es and 7-ens, but nothing even close here. A pathetic opening occured,
and thats all. Hopefully we'll get another shot at it in the next few hours. The
magnetometers start to jump again. So let's hope....

Good Morning Britain. Whilst you have been asleep the sun has been frying its head off
with noise detetectable up to at least 432 Mhz. 50 Mhz white noise was detected at sun
apogee and at around noon on AM mode using FT650 the noise was S9 and pulsing irregularly.
Good chance to check symmetry and beam width using a sun based white noise source. Here is
hoping for some dx tonight. Just spoke with Tada YJ0AWP who is qrv from Vila (QSL JA1WPX)

The following is pasted from SM7AED's notes and is a timely prod/prompt to VK ops to
take note. In recent openings we had ignorant ops here squatting on 50.110 with their
beams south to VK7 whilst we had weak scatter mode iE link to F into JA. Every time one of
the VK2's made some stupid comment about no one being on 6M the frequency was destroyed
for weak signal listening. I am taken to taks by VK8RH for being so outspoken on 50.110
abuse, who then wil, take up the slack in VK and become the chmapion for compliance with
international agreed working frequemcies? Rex says it does not do any good to complain.
What is the problem in Europe then? With all your clusters/newsleeters and the SixNews
pages you seem to have an epidemic each time the band opens. What hoe have we with a
diffrtacted 6M population separated by the tyranny of distance and remote from the
servers? May I suggest one way is to go exclsuively CW below 50.100 and I for one will be
doing that from KL7, so you had better pick up on the CW skills... From SM7AED....(Many
European hams are thinking that 50.110 is the ideal frequency to continuously call CQ to
make some local or European QSOs. They also think that this frequency is the only one to
test and tune their transmitter in a 1 - 2 MHz wide band. Some amateurs start calling CQ
on SSB as soon they can hear a CW-station, the weaker the more frequent SSB calls. They
completely ignore that they are destroying for other amateurs as well as for the DX
stations. Please watch the comments from Neil G0JHc above, his comments show the
situtation all over Europe.) In VK we dont have TX tuning, but thats because most use
black box 100 watt appliances and not linears thankfully. Thanks for your indulgence.

Do you remember, nine years ago? Looking at all these early ES reports, I'm tempted to
say that it looks like something way in the past. The summer om 1989 was one not to
forget. First year PA's on the band. ES was there on most days during the spring and
summer month. And we had some big, and I mean really big, openings across the pond. One of
them lasting all in all for over 18 hours. Looking at the solar data, flux and A-index,
there doesn't seem to be a big difference between now and 1989. If '89 and '98 are going
to be the same we'll have something to talk about. Good DX

Please note that the level of solar ionizing radiation has been again fairly low
lately, so that most of the reported DX is due to ionospheric profile tilts. A single tilt
is generally not sufficient to raise MUF, but the combined match of two or more
appropriate gradients within unobstructed range of each other produces all these
interesting results. Overall alertness permits to utilize these partly random sceneries.
Perfect paths are occurring all the time, but it needs a station on both ends to prove it.
Please mark the beacons in your logs as well. Good hunting! 73, Zaba OH1ZAA
