first time a new station in Israel, 4Z5JA 50.102, cw with both sides 5.9.9 reports. Never
worked a station from that area with a so strong signal. Have a big problem working into
afria, because in the direction 180 degrees, plus - minus 20 degrees, there is the very
strong tv qrm procedured by the Chan.2 TV Tx called Biedenkopf (100 KW) The distance
between us is only about 80 to 90 km. all the best, Hellmuth, DF7VX

What a strange evening yesterday! Strongest signals were from PA and DL, also a LZ and
YU very weak, TV coming from all bearings with rapid flutter. Nothing from 7Q7RM, ZD8SIX
or 3C5I like two days ago and all of a sudden there is PY5CC with 57/8 braking in while
excanging a short propagation report with 4X6ON. Now that's magic! I guess most people are
still waiting for the big openings to happen sometime later in the year and we all miss
this ones due to lack of activity. This is my third QSO with Peter this year and also did
it twice in spring with ZP6CW. Let's hope for the best! Chris 4Z5JA - 73 DXCC wkd this

Great evening on six. when I came home at 16:00 utc the band opened towards YU, 9A, YO,
OM and T97. I started calling CQ and worked a few stations. Just at 16:30 the signals
disappeared and just when I thought the band was death again 4X1IF called me with a 559
signal. After my pizza break I heared 3C5I calling in SSB but he disappeared before I
could call. This was the first time I heared Allan. Then pannic at 50110 7Q7RM was 55 in
SSB and Europa was awake! Could hear him for maybe one hour at 50107 in CW (319) but again
unable to work him. Probably JO33 was just a little to far north. Next time better luck.

Hello 6m hams, I purchased my 6m7JHV (not a 6m7) 2 months ago at MECOM (M2 dealer PA
http://www.mecom.nl) I decedid to go for this antenna because of the verry clean radiation
patern in combination with a sharp beamwidth E=40 and H=42 deg. This enables a much better
signal to noise ratio which in my opinion is more important than gain, (there is so much
more to win here especially on the noisy 6m) Compare this with a 5 el M2 E=52 H=60 or
compare this with the standard 6M7 E=42 H=50. This is a pretty good for a 7 element
antenna with a boom length of approx 9,5 meters. Personally i go for the sharp beamwidth
this enables me to listen with LESS noise. In adition this antenna gives also 10.9 real
dBd and 25 dBd F/B ratio. Result is SUPER. As you read this you might think a have an
comerial intrest in M2. I can asure you this is absolute not the case. Wind survival is
rated 85 MPH. I payed approx DFL 650 incl P&P. Sofar this is my best invested money.
Reception: I hear daily the LX0SIX beacon on tropo now. LX0SIX is at 300 KM and runs 5W
ERP. This absolute not an ideal direction for me. Even more intresting is to discover how
your neighbours computer disaperes with only a few deg. turning off it. 73's de Ron PE1OZH

I put up a M2JHV 7 ele yesterday and would certainly vouch for it's performance.
Initial tests show that I have at least 3 dB more gain than my old 6 ele Create. I use the
GB3MCB beacon in Cornwall for my tropo tests and the difference is very promising. The
radiation pattern is also much cleaner. I heard 3C5I for a few minutes this morning, and I
am sure I would not have heard him on the old 6 ele judging by tests with the MCB beacon.
I recently bought two M2JHV yagis directly from M2, they delivered within a week to an

The 6M7JHV by M2 is an extended boom version of the regular 6M7. The JHV version has an
approximately 31' long boom. It has about a db more forward gain, but most importantly it
has a very clean pattern - greatly reduced side lobes, etc. to reduce noise pick-up. It is
very light, about 18 lbs, but extremely resiliant, having withstood 80 mph winds here. I
have an array of four of these antennas, and used them last night to work several JA's for
a new world record (I think) for 50 meg E-skip - over 10,000 kms. Call M2 for availability
or e-mail Mike Staal at k6myc@aol.com. I have no financial interest in M2. Mike designed
this antenna to my specifications and it sure works. Regards to all.

Too much antenna gain? More db may mean more DX, but larger antennas attract more
attention from the Radio Inspectors! Tis the season for them to be prowling, looking for
things that increase their leverage. A large antenna means the owner is worth more money,
which means ..... more attention. I suppose my antenna gain is about optimum. Any more and
it would be hard to fight them off! Anyway, the beacon will be operating less for a while
- I won't run it if I'm not around the house to answer any possible RI questions. The good
side is that I had to clean up the shack to make it look simpler, cheaper! That should
help my negotiating position. The joys of Africa.

The short Arctic OH1ZAA/9 tour was an interesting experience. The Norwegian landscapes
were magnificent and a good compensation for signal loss in valleys............. Starting
July 4th in KP17 with failing conditions a quick peek was taken during the morning also in
KP27/28 and KP18. While passing the KP18/08 border, the exhaust of the car broke, and we
returned to KP08GK for repairs. A dynamic evening condition with all the 28 MHz beacons at
800 - 1200 km range was witnessed, but no steady 50 MHz signals (pings of
OH1SIX).................... Next day we got good bursts of OH1XT's (KP01) signals while
driving in KP08RR. The entrance into KP09 seems the best place to operate in that square
while the horizons start to disappear. Given the lack of pro- pagation we moved on into
Norway. As we did not resolve the LA-licensing conditions ahead of the trip we were only
monitoring the bands when not in a valley. It was hard to find a free take-off to southern
azimuths........................ The trip continued through JP99LO, where LA7SIX was not
on the air, then JP89 (Sommaroy). Again afternoon and evening conditions with the LA4TEN
and LA5TEN beacons and others at 1000-1500 km............... Back to JP99, down to
JP98/88/78. Boat to JP88, JP87/77/76....Sweden... JP75/85/84/94/93..KP03. Most of those
squares are probably served with E2-television.................... Boat to Finland
KP03/KP02/KP01... 2300 km in the few days from KP17. No conditions noted after JP99.
........................................... Rigs: FT-650 and FT-690, whips &
delta-loops. ................................ Next time I would rather hang around in KQ30
or so, chasing auroral Es from one location. ............................... 73, Zaba
OH1ZAA ............................................ P.S. The weather was relatively cool,
so I'll be warming up the next few days in KM15/KM25/KM35.

odd years ago!!!. Nice to have a band with a challenge. I will have to get up to my old
tricks and build myself a P.A, I built several for 2 and 70. including some full legal
power beasties. I will see if I can find any of my old bits and pieces and see if I cant
get a 4CX250 or something like that going!! (well maybe a QQV-06-40 first!!) Still 1.7W
will have to do for now, It's the front end of this rig for the mods next!! I'll listen

Hello I was active on 6m in 1989,92,93 & 94 from a pretty good locatation with a
good takeoff in all directions.I went QRT and moved to a fairly poor location.I have land
rising between 80 and 110 m at about 1km way from 80 degrees to about 180 then from 180 to
230 about 150m within 2.5km.230 degrees through to 60 degrees is fairly gentle rising
ground. I used to do ok on aurora from this location on 2m.Question is what can I expect
on 6m.I intend using a DL6WU based 6 ele at 20m above ground level with a largish
triode.Has anyone else had experience from a VHF hole like this. I can tell you that the
highest hill needs 8 degrees of elevation to see the moon for eme I am not to sure about
the geometry of E's and F2.What kind of an angle does it come down at? I have one
advantage.I do not leave for work until 1800 utc most days. Also when square counting and
DXCC counting do I have to start again or can I count previous QSO's Many thanks and see
you all very soon Conrad G0RUZ

40 6M enthusisats turned up at Gippsland Institute to hear all about 6M Antenna DX and
other things. The only thing I disagree with is the suggestion you cant work EME on 6M
without running gross excessive power. It all depends on the antenna and the best 6M rig
in the world wont work without a good antenna. Some serious sole searching occured after
the noise and performance figures of certain 6M rigs was published. Seems oldies are not
necessarily poor performers or new jazzy rigs up to the task. 73

RE: 1988 reminiscing: ARRL June Contrest - The really frustrating thing was that after
Geoff had called to let me know I was being heard, I looked back over my scratch sheets,
and sure enough there was all the parts of GJ4ICD call. Problem was I kept QRZ'ing K4ICD,
KJ4IC, etc. never even thinking that I was being called by a GJ. But awareness is much
heightened now - HI. By Sept/Oct we were having regular F2 opening to South America, on
10/12/88 our first VK opening and 10/27 and 10/28 were the first really great F2, working
KL7, then a string of JA's, and hearing the 48.250 video S9 the following morning. As many

will be half way up the cycle, ie 30 months into cycle 23, as it started in May 1996 and
at December it will be 30 months. A smoothed Sunspot number of around 90 to 100 looks to
be the figures by this time. So maybe the Dr in the USA was right for a peak in 1999!
Watch out in Sept/Oct this year for some good southern dx?

I am interested in the 70 Mhz capabilities of the Yaesu FT 847 .Today I have read a
review of the FT 847 in Ham Radio Today magazine .Receiver sensitivity on 70 MHz (preamp
on)for 12 dB SINAD was quoted as 0.44 (FM) and 0.32 (SSB/CW).I am no expert, but these
figures suggest that the FT 847 is deaf on 70 Mhz.I would be interested to know whether
owners of the FT 847 have measured similar sensitivity figures on 70 Mhz

Jaap PA0OOS:Tnx for the report summary. Yes, it's amazing how often in the last month,
marginal contacts are possible between West Africa and Europe. I can listen for hours on
end, hearing CW replies but just too weak or too much QSB to make it. Very occasionally,
maybe for one or two minutes, something lines up in the ionosphere to raise sigs up 4 or 5
S points. But normal beacons won't work with their limited erp - pointing in your
direction, I would run about 3Kw erp versus a normal beacon of 100-500W. I'd call it being
stubborn on this end!! - after 5 years of no radio, now is such a good time to push it.
And with the XYL away on vacation, I'll run it to the max. The strategy is: If I'm in the
shack and the TV is off the air, the CQ will be operational on 105; if I'm not in the
shack, the beacon will be on 107 (if TV TX is off); after 1430Z when the TV comes on, I
will respond to calls on 105 but will not run any transmission continously.

Can anyone help me unravel some mysteries about the UK DX Cluster and access to it? I
live in Oxford and used to have access to DXH and DXK via a local node on 433.650. About
two months ago, this node disappeared without warning. Now access is unpredictable, takes
ages to set up, requires ingenuity and drops out regularly. Often the cluster is not
available at all. Is this a common experience? Do users of the 144 MHz packet system
experience similar frustrations? Is there a bulletin board where information about the
current status of the packet system is regularly posted? I'd be very grateful for any
advice.

My log in 1988 is completely free from 'blockbuster' USA openings that summer (even
though there were many in previous summers), but I worked my first South Africa stations
on the 8th October that year. Were there any, or was it just that I missed them? I have
not even heard one US station this summer. Is 1998 a repeat of 1988 and we have everything
to look forward to in October? Words cannot express what I think about the lack of
propagation this last week! Chris

thinking of a TS-570S would be better to go for the very latest version called the

Quiet in 3C5: I thought it was going to be a great day - the TV was off the air until
1725Z, the XYL is off on vacation, and G's would surely not be watching the 3rd test! But
there was very little in the way of solid signals that I could copy. Once again, as
someone put it, "eme type signals". Thanks for trying, for listening and for the
beacon reports - it all helps. An answer to the 107 beacon content: it is "3C5I 3C5I

I'm with G3KOX! I'm very pleased with the IC756, but found the noise blanker AOK. Much
better operationally than the (admittedly old) TS660. The NB has a narrower filter than
the 660 and does not suffer as badly from "pumping" strong adjacent signals.
