Looking at this mornings reports you may wander if we're going to see a VK-Eu one of these days. It's not the best time of the year to do it. CQ-ing is the best you can do, and remember: NO E2-TV, R1-TV or Ch0-TV is required to work into the Pacific. The MUF doesn't have to be 50 MHz, even with much lower values (45 or so) the path can still open. This due to the layer-layer reflections, where the signal never reaches the ground in between the 2 endpoints. Good hunting !

Solar data for the next days look very promessing. A flux gradually dropping from the 180's and active geomagnetic conditions. Maybe we'll see the first openings across the atlantic before the end of this year, or just therafter.

Hello and best wishes to all of you, Today 29 DEC 98, I received a very nice QSL card confirming the QSO with A45ZN (Thank you Ted, G4UPS). But what did I receive today too?? After a period of six months QSL hunting, the second letter out of three sended was the lucky one. To make a long speech short, EK6AD's QSLs (6m and 2m QSOs) are here (!!!), in my hands. I don't know the English expression but here in Greece we say "Whoever thinks, can understand" Best of luck to all of you and your families. Happy 1999.

Pessimism continued: Maybe El Niņo has to do something with it. The weather patterns have been upset quite a bit over the past two years and F2 might just aswell be dependant to where or where not high-pressure areas are located. Did anyone ever look at that for F2, or is it just seen as influencing the E-layer behaviour ?

Hello All: Boy oh boy! We were treated to some of the most spectacular array of DX modes I have certainly ever seen on this band yet! It started this morning with some interesting (tropo???) between ZS6PJS and ZR1ADI/ZR1TRD. Then Es started with the ZS6TWB beacon in here at 599+++ for hours on end. Propagation swung to our North-West and allthough there was no sign of the V51VHF beacon, we worked V51E and V51KC QRP!. I asked ZR1TRD to ask V51E to check 48.250/49.750. It was 40db over S9 into V5! We were copying video on 49.750 and I tried my best on the OH Cluster to alert EU as to the possibility of an Es-TEP linkup. (What a battle!) I spent most of the time on the keyboard unfortunately, and did not make a single contact, but left it to the "new" ops to enjoy! I have not even eaten today, six Metres has kept me busy the whole day! ZS6PJS reported no signs of propagation from Pietersburg apart from working V5 and ZS1... About time WE have a bit of fun! I must add that signals were very weak and difficult to work and no beacons heard. ZS1EK reported hearing ZD8VHF. That's my report for today.... tomorrow maybe??? 73 de

Pessimism all over. It must be down to the season. Looking at the last month messages the Eu's seem to loose faith. However VK's and ZL's aren't complaining. When I look back at the last cycle I remember the W's complaining about lack of opening, where we only complained when we(Eu's)worked less than 6 continents on one single day. I wonder if we not just have to wait till the propagation clouds move into our direction. Maybe there is another meganism in the ionosphere that we don't know of yet. That meganism is that world-wide propagation does only exists from out one single area and is not globally available. I can't remember that in last cycle the VK's and ZL's had soo much propagation at the "start" of the cycle. They were complaining aswell. So the only usefull thing at the time seems be to keep your ears open and hope for the hot-spot to move towards you. Any usefull thoughts ???

3C5: It's been very quiet with 48.240 & 48.250 coming thru very occasionally and very weakly but with no QSOs. Thank God I'm not here during the minimum of the solar cycle!!

Hello Friends, Here are some reports about our VHF activity from TO150, at 3073m of altitude. The bands were increadibly very quiet compared to our home qth of course, and we could notice every small changes in the band's noise towards different azimuth. We didn't manage any qso, but we heard on 6m (19/12/98), 2JA stations having qso on 50.110, certainly talking to VK. We called them but without success, and their signal was too low to give the opportunity to identify clearly the callsign. That was extremely early in the morning, about 0030z which makes 0430 local time..... Never heard any FR reporting such early possibility towards JA !! At 0757z, we heard other JA, still very qrp, and impossible to get the complete calls out of noise ... I think we could have made some qso's if they were beaming towards FR (was that the case or not ????). We never heard any signal later and no VK at all. The best signal was at 0830z (1230 local) on 7Q7SIX (antenna??) which was perfectly readable for 30 minutes at S3, with very slow QSB. We heard nothing towards ZS at that time and during the days of activity. I guess that we heard 7Q7SIX via E-layer propagation or tropo ? What do you think ? But a bit earlier it was interesting to notice that the noise on the 2m band was very fluttery... I never heard that typical noise on 2 (probably under man-made noise at my home). Absolutly nothing was heard towards the North via TEP. On 144200cw we heard some dots towards ZS around 0600 to 0700z, nothing else later... The same case on 144575 towards VK6. So we have the feeling that there are really possibilities to work ZS and East Africa on 6, but we need more tests to check the best times during the day. We also see that we can reach or hear countries much earlier than what we thought, and that other paths have surely some potential as well (VK). Again, Merry Xmas to all - Phil.

Hi all, First of all Season's greetings to all lovers of the Six metre band. May 1999 hold many DX contacts for everyone.To business: There was a strong Sporadic-E opening early today between ZS1 and ZS6. I heard the ZS6TWB/b beacon on 50.044 at S9+ , the ZS6DN beacon on 50.050 at S2-3 and the ZS6AYE voice beacon at about S1-2 on 50.065. ZS6AXT answered my CW cq on 50.110. I QSY'ed to 50.200, not wanting a QSO on that Frequency, but he did not follow. I called but no-one was up in ZS6, so I made a LL call to ZS6WB and ZS6PJS who rushed home and proceeded to work me with only 2W with a 57 signal report! (1524.3km between ZS6PJS and ZR1EV). ZR1HIL, ZS1EK and ZS1RON were on frequency as well from JF95 but heard nothing:-(. At one stage I could copy ZS6TWB/b at S1 on a FT690R using only the telescopic antenna. Thought I heard something weakly on 50.003, but there are so many carriers round there that it will be impossible to confirm or claim to have heard the 7Q7 beacon.(must get a narrow CW filter for this rig! Santa, are you reading this?)ZR6D is presently on holiday here in Cape Town and brought a TS750 along with him for demonstration purposes. He has a multi-wavelength inverted V antenna up as a temporary antenna and puts out a LOUD signal here at my qth and seems to get out fine on this contraption. The radio sounds interesting. He is still banging his forehead against the wall for missing the opening to his home call area. Actually there are more ZS6's on holiday here in ZS1 than there are locals....totally overrun! Oops! I waffle on too long. Opening started in earnest at about 09h00 UT and lasted for just over an hour with the S9+ part lasting about 50 minutes. ZS6WB arrived home just to find the band closing. There has been much reference to Steve, VK6PA's very successful operation last cycle, however sadly Steve is now QRT from his old QTH in Karratha and has moved to the town of Perenjori, inland and much further south. Future 50 MHz operation is unknown. As a possible alternative from Northwest Westerna Australia, watch for the new beacon VK6RSX on 50.304 MHz with 50W erp omni. VK6RSX is located at Exmouth on Northwest Cape. Season's greetings to all with lots of DX in the near future!

Re P29 and VK6PA: Forget it Peter: VK6PA to Europe last cycle was always a F2 - Spread F (TEP) combination. P29 (and also VK8 Darwin) is impossible with that combination of propagation. Re:P29KFS -- Looking at the large number of openings we had into northern VK(last Cycle),where VK6PA was worked by me on nearly 30 days in a row, it should be an easy thing to work P29, at least from this part of Eu. Openings occurred mainly in November and March between 0600 and 1200 UTC. If you need more details on the best times for your region, send me an email and I'll drop you the statistics in .xls format. 73's

Hi all 6m addicts, Another great evening on 6 from EK09 on Es last night. From this square XE1/SM0KAK and XE1NVX were also active. I became active about 00:00Z this morning and had a pile up of stn from the southern US, texas, Arkansas, Nevada, Arizona etc. about 00:30 the propagation started to move north. With S9 signals from most part of California a bit later into Oregon and finally a qso with VE7XF in CN89. At this time the stns in the south were still audible but a much lower strength. I also worked a KL7 but he turned out to be in Texas!

This weekend had small openings from 3C5 to the Med Sat & Sun 1000-1200Z with about 8 or 9 contacts each day, including DL3RB and OE5UAL on Sat. Characteristically, deep QSB @ 1Hz on both 48.250 and 6m. Good to see 5N on! I assume 6m is permitted there - I had reports it was not.

Hello folks in western Europe, since Decembre first, we (Dennis PE1PZS & me PA3GST)are receiving TV signals on 48.250 and 55.250 also AUDIO is received some times. The transmittor on 48.250 is the German ARD but the otherone is still unknown (dennis heard french language). SIX METERS... ALIVE & KICKING By Jack Haden, VK2GJH The weekend of Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of December was a six meter DXers paradise as the band came really alive. Many east coast DXers worked KH6, FK8, ZL and VK9N for new ones while the lucky ZL's had a path to Mexico and Costa Rica which was envied by excited VK's. From the VK2GJH log: Sat 12th Dec 1998: At 2230z NZ TV video on 45.240/250/260Mhz was rising rapidly with the peak at 0000z with signals well in to the red on the 'S' meter. ZL3SIX beacon observed strength five at 0013z, I worked ZL3NW minutes later with a 5X5 exchanged. ZL's reported contacts with TI5KD in Costa Rica and hearing the Mexico beacon around 0120z plus a HR6 was also heard. 0209z VK7RST beacon on 52Mhz 559 report, 0226z ZL4LV worked with 5X7 exchanged. VK4ABW heard at 0228z 5X6 calling CQDX. It was also reported the ZL's had a solid path to JA for a period of time but the JA's were not heard at all in Sydney. A feeding frenzy commenced at 0325z when beacons KH6HI and KH6HME beacons started to come through, the frustration's were answered at 0337z when NH6YK Ted was worked by VK1, VK2, VK3, VK4, VK7 and VK9N. Ted took the pile up to 50.120Mhz where he stayed for nearly two hours working VK. One resident six meter aficionado in Sydney, who like's telling others what to do and when to do it, was chastised by a few for trying to pump the contact dry with Ted whilst others were waiting to work him, practise what you preach? bitchy, bitchy! Ted was later joined by Ken KH7R and KH6WU who both enjoyed solid attention from DX starved VK's, for many Hawaii was a new one. Prominent Sydney DXer Bob Lear VK2DN commented it had been a number of years since Hawaii was so strong in Sydney on six. Jim VK9NS stirred a hornets nest at 0355z with a 5X9 signal on 50.110Mhz SSB, a small pile up started, Jim beamed to Hawaii and proceeded to work KH6 to the dismay of some VK's who needed him for a new one on six! Such is life. I tried to ring 3D2CM, T20AA and C21RK to alert them but no answer at any of the three residencies, what a pity. New Caledonia attracted many with FK8CA pounding away on CW on 50.095Mhz with a solid 599 signal at times. Again many worked him for a new country or new mode. The band switched around at 0435z with the VK4BRG beacon rumbling through like a steam train on 50.077Mhz followed by a good strength five from beacon VK7RST. At 0447z Brian VK7RR was five nine plus in Sydney on 50.130Mhz working a VK4. By 0500z the KH6 beacons has disappeared but the VK4's were still coming in, around this time VK7 bowed out gracefully too. Local DX was about with VK2APG in Kiama worked 5X9 both ways, ZL TV on 45Mhz still powering in but starting to wobble with fade just around the corner. UHF DX was great with WIN and PRIME TV in Wollongong being viewed clearly on the indoor antenna in Sydney for the first time in many years! The 45Mhz ZL TV was still coming through around the strength nine mark at 1245z when I switched the IC-736 off and went to bed. Let's hope we have a repeat of this tomorrow... Sun 13th December: ZL TV on 45Mhz was peaking 10Db over all morning, VK7RAE beacon was a 559 report at 0116z indicated things were on the move, and they were but sadly not to be a repeat of yesterdays star performance. VK7RST beacon on 52Mhz broke through at 0137z heralding a rising MUF to the delight of many. A quick CQ on 50.110Mhz was rewarded with a strong signal from VK5AYD clearly indicating the path was indeed different from yesterday as no VK5's were worked in Sydney. Brian VK7RR came through at 0145z with a good 5X9 from Hobart. A quick check of 52Mhz found VK5VF beacon pounding through 579 report on 52.450Mhz at 0152z, back to 50Mhz and a good solid contact with John VK5PO on 50.150Mhz, John was after the Pacific so I kept the contact very short for him. Both VK7 beacons were 599 at 0208z and a quick contact was made with Joe VK7RG on 50.125Mhz who was 5X9 plus at the time. ZL TV on 45Mhz had all but gone by 0215z making it very clear the band was changing direction, unlike yesterdays solid ZL path. A quick CQ netted Paul VK2YVG in Broken Hill who was 5X5, Paul was after the Pacific like everyone else.The VK7RAE beacon was plus plus on the meter at 0225z. A frenzy broke out at 0249z with VK7JG and VK7GUN working Ted NH6YK in Hawaii but the reports exchanged were poor compared to yesterday. Ted was barely audible in Sydney as he worked the two Tasmanian stations much to the dismay of many who missed out Saturday and were on today just to work the KH6 gang. At 0325z Jim VK9NS powered in to Sydney 5X9 and was soon chastised by a VK1 to move off the call frequency for the DX! Jim responded that he "was the DX" Again a few VK's worked Jim for a new one which was appreciated as usual despite the failure of the KH6 opening Jim filled a void and made the afternoon worthwhile for many sweating at the radio in the summer heat. Queensland made an appearance at 0342z with VK4KK pounding away on CW with a 419 report, at 0345z VK7AB nudged the meter to 5X6 peaking nine whilst talking to VK2BGL in Sydney. By 0410z the VK7 beacons had all but disappeared and the void replaced by the appearance of VK8RAS beacon Alice Springs on 50.046Mhz 529 report. No VK8's were heard or worked by me, many called them though due to the beacon coming through, VK7JG heralded the last of the VK7's with a 5X8 signal whilst working VK1MP on 50.120Mhz at 0423z. By 0515z it was all over bar the shouting so to speak and 50Mhz returned to its usual quiet self! Many new voices are being heard on six meters attributed to the likes of the HF plus six meter rigs being sold today. Quite a number of those I worked were running the new Yaesu FT-847 or FT-920 with many others running Icom, Kenwood or Alinco HF/VHF combination rigs. These new transceivers are definitely drawing new blood to six meters and with propagation on the up and up I am sure their owners will not be disappointed with six meters and the exotic DX on offer. 73's and see you on six! de Jack VK2GJH.

The plot on the webpages of DXLC (http://www.dxlc.com/solar/cyclcomp.html) is quite clear: at this stage the current cycle is 30~50 SSN units lower than cycle 22. So my estimate is to wait at least another 6 months before anything substantial will happen (sigh ...). And that's difficult to accept for us "deja vu"-ones. Mother nature is a bitch, isn't she ?

Thought now was the time to have a look at just where I thought Cycle 23 was up to at my latitude (54 North). At the equivalent month of cycle 22, I had already been hearing (not always working!) DX for 2 months. There are so many mixed modes available on the N/S path, I have ignored these openings in my very brief analysis. To sum up I'd already logged (up to 24th Dec) P43AS, PZ1AP, HC5K, HC2FG and three North American openings to VE, W1,2,3-land, netting 40 QSO's. All this at a time when I had 10w and a 3 ele at 20ft, and didnt spending hours monitoring the band! So Far this cycle I've hardly caught the MUF above 40MHz on the E-W path, and as far as I'm aware, the North Americans havn't worked into Southern Europe yet. Looking at sunspot numbers and flux levels for the same "cycle month" periods of 22, (certainly at my latitude) I'm still looking for rotations to dip in the 160's and hit 190 before that E/W path breaks. Like VST I'm hoping for the best, (and would love to be proven wrong), but I reckon this year will be a lost cause for equal latitude F layer openings other than the usual "hot spots".

Yeh!!!Great news at this end!! I just got my license renewed this morning for another year, expiring Jan 2000!! This is remarkable because nothing can be taken for granted. It went quickly (but not cheaply). Everything is full of surprises and unpredictable here - this was a pleasant one!!

3C5I: All my QSL cards are up to date with a batch sent off this week, some sent via 3C5 snail mail (so that pretty stamps come with it). Card has been upgraded slightly. 6m is fairly quiet right now. Just like the city here now Christmas is coming. Would you believe all vehicles are banned on the roads here on Dec 24, 25, 31 and Jan 1st?? Also, I wish I could post the story of how I have to go about license renewal in the next week or so!! Dutch Harbour is 750 miles S/W of Anchorage at the commencement of the Aelutian chain of islands.

Last night we had the best opening on the band that I have been able to participate in, between 22:32z and 23:50 I worked ZL3ADT,ZL3TIC,ZL2KT,ZL3NW,ZL2TPY,ZL1ADP,ZL3TLG,ZL4AAA,ZL3TY,VK7IK/7,VK3AKK AND XE1/SMOKAK AND W5UWB by backscatter.The HC2FG/B beacon was audible with me from 00:38 antil 01:00Z when I went qrt for family matters. I did not work any HCs but I do know that Lars XE1/SM0KAK worked at least two. When we had our backscatter qso Lars was 59 with me whilst he is normally about 57 on the direct path because there are some mountains in the way.

Had a visit this morning from Ray S79RH, a South African working in the Seychelles. He will be going back there on 2 January. I have an Icom 505 that I have semi-promised to 3DA0CA for his use next season, but perhaps S79 might be more in demand for Europe and also he will have some propagation next year to JA. It will be difficult to get another rig later to S79, but no problem to 3DA0. Which of the two do you guys need most? Let me know your thoughts.

Dear OM s . In absent of others propagation's I am tested MS. During Leonides and others showers I notice that PI7ISX on 50052 has best signal via MS (truly 10 W and dipole?). Monitoring shows very good MS activity during all day especially after 18 GMT when near coming Geminides radiant rising up in Europe. During long bursts I switch to 110 for call but activity is very low. Why we didn't organised something like short skip MS net on 6 for missing locators and DXCC. (HV , Z33, C31 , and others will be welcome) . Best 73 !

Re Qsl's: PA3FBN et al awaiting qsl's, the lesson here is quite simple, when you work a new one qsl direct the same day, otherwise in years to come you have no chance of a qsl. (IE: Several key operators are now silent key), K8EFS is good for ZS3E/V51E direct only, DL3ZM/YV5 is SK, 7Q7RM is POB 472, Blantyre, Malawi, Chet PJ9EE is direct "Chet Brandon", Santa Martha Bay, Bonaire Island, Netherland Antilles, etc, rather than me write all the qsl addresses here why not look at Buckmaster on the WWW, this gives most of the addresses needed, make sure you enclose an IRC or $ plus an envolope, also note that IRC's are not valid in many Countries like the GD card needed so send a usd.

3C5I is off the air for a day or 2 for antenna repairs. The UHF tee to split the feedlines collapsed - looks like a press fit for the side connection! This must have vibrated out. The telescoping mast came down with a thump last night for repairs - no fingers missing but it was close! These masts are as close as you can get to a guillotine - but the real problem was the nut in the driver's seat.

PS: The reason Ch 0 came about initially was when the ABCB tried to set up the third commercial channel on TEN in late 60's. This was OK in Sydney and Adelaide but DDQ 10 Toowoomba and one in Eastern Victoria blocked Melbourne and Brisbane so the first Channel Zeros or doughnut channels were put on the air. The paranoia got to the stage where in Master control the engineer had a radio call book circled with the known "offenders" on 52 Mhz and whenever Master Control got an abusive TVI complaint they would call the nearest amateur direct and harangue the hapless operator over the phone. Now it appears it is about to start again with the implementation of erp exposure standards in Australia. The world is closing in.

Would someone please follow up on this even go and have a look It is 15 miles south of Oxford near the M23 and run by Meteor Data Corporation. Curious how something as big a signal as this could escape notice. We were told about it by Meteor Data Corporation in the USA so maybe it is only new.

M/S confirmed in UK may be useful indicator. Could be running as much as 5000 watts erp or more. Encl: Re yr note about xmsn on 46950.0.  I listened today at 1030z.  Heard an A1 xmsn on 46950.00 at S9+10 from Oxford direction, and I have attached a recording of it as a wav file to this.  Signal is keyed continuosly.  Think its probably some form of ARQ system.  I am located near Daventry, about 30 miles north of Oxford at IO92JE. Will listen on the other freqs you quote to see if I can detect any pings from them.  Will let you know if I hear anything.

Profiles on High Power Ch 0. 46.2400 Wagga Wagga 150 miles W/SW of Sydney enroute to Victoria near Hume Highway. Mount Ulandra a peanut size hill with a 600 foot high tower. Flying by regularly it was easy to see bays of drain pipe size dipoles on all four sides of the guyed tower spreading out over at least 1/4 of the tower top. The dipoles point N/W//N/E//S/W//S/East. I think there are four bays of four on each side at elast and the eirp is 100,000 watts. This TX copied here in KL7 last week at 59 plus on a hf dipole so it really gets out. Under 46.2400 is a lower power 46.2402 also copied and running only 500 watts. 46.1718 is at Mt Mowbullan north of Toowoomba Queensland and on the direct flying route to Rockhampton. Again my observatiosn when flyign past this mast are a similar tower 5000 feet or so high with similar bay of dipoles but I think less in number on W/N/E side and an extra bay on South side towards the city 24 dipoles??? ERP is 170,000 to South and 100,000 elsewhere if my memory serves me correctly. 46.1718 has stero carrier on 51.915 low deviation and wide band FM on 51.6718. There are three other LOW power t/laters in Cooma VK2, and on coast of VK2 but power level less than 100 watts and a dumb service at Tamworth NSW running 1000 watts on 46.258/51.758/52.005 sound. It is in a town where all the UHF services are in the opposite direction necessitating combination UHF aerials pointing one way and a splitter and Ch 0 yagi pointing the other. .

Continuing. In my observations over the years... ZL 45.250 sound plus 5.5 mainly normal offsets plus 2,4,6,8 lines at 16,525 Line Frequency. Stereo is NICAM sound only on 51.000 Mhz wide band data. VK TV 46,240 plus 5.5 Mhz abnormal offsets to accomodate Stereo as follows. 1984 Toowoomba channel 10 switched with Brisbane Channel 0 and 46.250 was closed down. 1985 New stereo carrier added on 51.915 Mhz so video moved DOWN to lowest tollerable frequency within the tuning range of the vestigal sb plumbing 46.1718. Monto Queensland also stereo'd and 46.1720 also on the air, it is however now QRT. Tamworth NSW has still 46.2580 (now 2610) so second stereo carrier is 5.5 plus 384 or 52.005 in the exclusive ham band funny about that. Next TV level VK is 56.250 plus minus 10 Khz but we have one on 58.300!!! 56.250 does not cause as much QRM as 55.250 which is a disaster in USA. 55.250 in use every hwre and is US Ch 2 and ZL Ch 2 NTSC Full sync tip max out white is zero output so raster buzz is always eveident. Plus 4.5 Mhz sound carrier so look on 59.750. ZL 55.250 no wierd offsets sound on 60.750 VK Channel 2 is 62.250 sound on 67.750 ZL Ch 3 is not on same frequency as VK Ch 2 they are 1 mhz apart. USSR and China really wierd. R1/C1 TV is 49.750 with sound SECAM on 55,250 so you never hear it. R2 is 59.750 often heard But someone Chinese? have video on 59.250 up that way and PAL. In S/E Asia either cambodia/Vietnam/Laos three services are on air. French, PAL and NTSC. and so the standards or lack thereof prevail and you need an R7000 to sort them out. See data base on TV frequs. research dating back 11 years.

Ho Hum the Low down on Channel 0 regradless of where the TV set was manaufcatured is as follows.... Aussies in their usual picket fence mentality in the mid 1960;s were only producing TV sets with TEN channels 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. OK? We did not even accomodate FM band, it was a uselss invention according to authorities and would never catch on. We had a Ch 2, 7 and 9 in each capital city. Then in about 1965 give or take a year we all got a letter in the mail saying after january 1965 give or take a year 50 to 52 Mhz would no longerbe available for Amateur Primary use as it is required by the bcast service. Then some guy who could barely count produced the gem we have today Ch 0,1,2,3,4,5,5A,6,7,8,9,10,11. 13 Channel TV system to replace the old 10 channel short sighted system. At Philips where I worked and later at Pye/Astor we produced new 13 channel tuners and tuning knobs marked 0 thru 11. Now years later left with the legacy of those wonderful decisions we have just about cleared out all the Ch 3,4,5 stations and have a healthy FM service, but for years out here I could tune into Seame street on my FM car radio as we had a Ch 3 around 100 Mhz. It gets better after clearing out some, not all of the band 1 TV stations some guy found we have run out of space so the Ch 1 TV tx are no longer being cleared, in fact like at VK5NC;s place have been upgraded to 150,000 watts on 56.250/61.750 They have put a lot of the 3,4,5 up on 11 and now some guy has decided that as the Unique AWA Domestic DME band on 200 Mhz is cleared out we will have all the Channle 5A;s 137 to 144 Mhz move to Channel 9A and create a new Channel 12 also above Channel 11. Trouble is we dont have any knobs with 14 channel VHF system. Stay tuned for next exciting development in VK TV history. Errors and Ommisions granted....

Location and confirmation of the following listed Meteor Data Transmissions is requested.. 46.400 North of England. 46.950 15 Miles South of Oxford near M23 Motorway. Should be TX burst type units running substantial erp. Yes No?? There are also a number of US sites including this one... 44.200 Tipton Missouri 5000 watts (20,000 erp). 40.530 in Ogden OR and Boise ID 40.690 in Alsaka with slaves on 47.100 grid square details for all of these and more from FCC data base later. The VK3OT data base will need to be updated. Other frequencies to monitor... 44.580 40.000 45.900 46.180 47.700 49.180 49.680 Two stations qrt this cycle are 42.400 and 44.100 Meteor Data Inc in Anchorage Alaska. There are also two stations in Phillipines we are trying to ID.

EU TV: According to me there are the following European TV channels: CH E2 :48.250 Mc. CH A Ireland 45.750 Mc (this could be the ch 0 on your TV) CH R1 (eastern Europe) 49.750 Mc CH E2A (only one in Austria) 49.750 mC CH A (Italy) 53.750 Mc CH F2 (France) 55.750 Mc Channels 0 and 1 are probably on TV's because it is cheaper for the manufacturers to include all the frequencies used for TV all over the world ,instead of making a "channel selector" for every area of the world separately. So with your tv you can also receive Australian Channel 0 (46.250 Mc) 73 Willem

EU TV Question: I recently purchased a PAL TV from EU, made for the UK, but manufactured in France. It's a "ALBA ctv3400" 14" Color TV.(abt 6 yrs old I think) I have received several responses to this question but none that actually answer what I am asking. (which is:) On channel "0" of this TV, assuming prop to EU, what FREQUENCY am I seeing? IE: Is channel 0 = 48.250? I have received several conflicting reports. I think (maybe) channel 2 = 49.750 and channel 1 = 48.250, but I am still confused. IF this is so, what is channel 0? Anyway, a quick chart with the first 4 channels or so would be a great help. I am also wondering if TF TV (on 55.250) is PAL or NTSC. WHEW! Thanks for your help. Hope this makes sense. -Mike

A great opening today to Europe! Signals were the strongest and most stable that I've heard this year, especially from DL, GJ, F. The band opened at 0900Z and went to 1200Z. Many stations over 59. I'll be watching tomorrow .....perhaps Nth America too??

WELL, agn 2day we saw condx to EU, but only a very very few on 28.885Mhz I don't understand it. The ones that were there were EASILY s9 with < 100w. I was heard by gj4icd and f5jkk, but not anywhere else that I know of. Perhaps if there had been sum ct/ea/medd. stations on we could have done something. Oh well. Not too mni 6m ops need a "VE", but woulda been fun anyway. Peak last only a couple of minutes in the 1425-1440z time frame. What will tmw bring?

XE1/SM0KAK was heard in ZL2 today for 20 minutes and the XE1 beacon also. XE1KK will not be on deck until 1999. re PA3EUI and the Feb path to VK, people wouldn't believe it was open even if we told them Peter. Who you gonna work, everyone who ever tried to pass on reception reports of 48 Mhz TV has been effectively shut down by people with a vested self interest and not too many VK's are going to spend hours beaming Europe trying to turn antenna away from central and Sth America like last time. In case you havent noticed no one is liasing much and figure it is the domain of the big guns. So you are gonna have to go it alone and hope that someone will cock and ear on the radio down here and acknowledge a call from Europe. Good luck on TV reception, as we found today there are a lot of gaps between TV stations and even 599 reception of TV over 13000 kM does not in any way guarantee human activity. Im not home until Jan 21st and will be effectively outside the window in a few days after arriving and I have to erect my yagi and this time it is only going to be a 7 element not an 11. 73 Steve KL7SIX/VK3OT

Fell over 46.240 video today 579 at 2330z. heard VK2QF running QRO on 50.0094 at 2340. ZLTV in at 0015z until 0230z. very strong 45.2396/2500/2604. The Narooma T/l running 500 watts was also copied a tad higher than 46.2400 from Wagga Wagga. This is the first substantial TV indications in KL7 from VK2 since December 5th 1990 when KL7 was worked last cycle, you guessed it at around 2300z to 2345z. I am QRT from KL7SIX on 21/12/98 and new callsign will be NL7E I am relinquishing KL7SIX so it may be used for an Alaskan beacon callsign.

A note of interest to NA East Coast & Europeans. Today at aprox 1425Z, the MUF soared briefly to EU. I had 48.242 and 264 in weakly, and 48.250 peaked 10/s9 for a couple of minutes. I was playing it back on 28.885 to g3hbr,g4ups,and g2adr at the peak. (shudda bn clng CQ-hi). A minute later I was tuning my amp on 50.101 and was heard in G. (whether it was actually me or not is up to speculation) Anyway, according to OT ve1rg this has been happening every day this week. EU big guns take note, and maybe you guys can start clng t'ords NA during this time frame. 28.885 has been quite dissapointing so far. REAL GOOD to hear our UK friends on there, but not too much else from anywhere in EU. What gives? DO they not have priveledges up here or what? (hi) GL DX, and CU (all of a sudden) on the magic band. Just received EK6AD’s QSL cards for 50 and 144 MHz. I sent him a letter last week (not in an envelope but folded in 3 and stapled) and it seems that it may pulled few strings although the response was unbelievably fast. He mentions comments made in a previous card sent last August so does my "secret" markings on the return envelope that’s why it was probably a coincidence (?). Evgeni also writes that he only received one out of the 3 set of cards I had sent him. Now being at 145/145 I am worried about working new countries before I start to worry again about QSLs.

Just to clarify a message Steve VK3OT left earlier regarding being my QSL manager here's a not from Steve: Discussions with Ross before he left for Morocco lead me to understand I would handle the cards for this operation like I did for XU0UN, however due to both our situations abroad, and until this week no contact between us for 6 months, it was decided to be fair to all the dxers and the demand for CN2/S0/5T5/7X etc which he intends to operate, that prompt response to cards is desirable. Accordingly ZP6CW will continue/remain as the manager for all operations except the now defunct XU0UN. I think this will work out for the best, as I am not in any position to process cards until Feb 1999, and that is unfair to all concerned. Sorry for any misunderstanding, any cards arriving in Australia will be forwarded to ZP6CW.

Just received UKSMG Six News No.59 ; open for study.... ........... I did make the weekend trip to KP01 under 160-170 fluxes. We tried F2-propagation with VK6HK and EK6AD, but no results. ................... However, there was daily Es on 50 MHz and my best QSO was with 9H1EL in JM76, which is about 3000 km. 100 days in KL7: The wrap. 45 Mhz path proven to Sth Pacific. TV for days on end but very weak by comparison to lower pacific, but then we are at 60 degrees North and the sun is a fist above the horizon so what did we expect. recent developments show a daily MUF rise to lower 48 states and recption of 40.530 Mhz SNOTEL transmissions at 599+ for hours on end. We have a BLM TX on 40.690 cf in BP51 runs 2.5 kW data pulses to slave remote sites. The 49 Mhz TV reception has created more flurries here than the snow and I won;t speculate on where the TV video came from except to state emphatically that it was from North West roughly and was propagated via Intense AU E's during the arrival of the ejected particles from the last large CME. In VK we have not measured any TV from other than 355 degrees and given the type of antenna we now use (11 el yagis) can state for sure that Kamchatka and Magadan do not have 49 TV which puts the area of TV stations heard in KL7 most likely further West and out past the 1500 mile traditional skip zone of AU es. KL7FZ had W2 signals at 3800 miles so why wouldn;t a 100kW TV TX be at least as far away? Anyway thats my 100 days worth. No one said it would be easy and quite frankly the reaction to all discoveries has been less than favourable. But at least I tried to pass on the experiences of other regions and hope some of it rubbed off. I am now off to W7/VE7 and JA to meet more of the inhabitants of this fabulous 6M band. I predict that Europe can be worked via the North West path around the Auroral rim. In the mean time back to the south pacific to try to pick up the rest of the countries I haven't yet worked in Europe.
