Hi Everyone, Just a quick update on progress with GB3SIX Isle of Anglesey (EU124) 6m beacon. Tony GW4VEQ and myself took the beacon down to Cambridge yesterday in order that John G3UUT (VHF beacon co-ordinator) can try and find out why it stopped working at its old site. A quick look inside by a local professional radio engineer revealed damaged contacts and possible damage from MICE (!) due to its previously exposed and damp location. I will let you know when I get a full verdict back from John. We have three superb possible re location sites for the beacon if it can be repaired, all better than previous location and including heated ventilated siting buildings. I am still open to suggestions as to antenna selection if/when we get the beacon running again. Latest consensus is a ruggedised horiz dipole running sw/ne to give good sigs to states es europe. Will post any further news hear as it devlops. 73 Steve IO77TG IOTA EU124

What a week. Rebuilt the beacon sequencer for VK3SIX. I am really confused by all those packet beacon lists. They had VK3SIX on 50.029.3!!! For South Africa (Typo or what?) 50.293.0 thanks, but it is now back on the FTAC assigned frequency of 50.053 and is being set up for the coming TEP seasons. To wit: Callsign Callsign Grid Square and then the letter O(mni) or Y(agi) to signify which antenna you have been l hearing. The Omni is a long 1/4 plus 1/2 phased vertical which according to Peter VK1RX on 27/01/97 was stronger than the Yagi which is now aimed at Northern Japan with a spread from Hong Kong to Washington State. The 10M beacon carries the same ID and if I can find a suitable colinear Ill stand it off the tower the other side and run the same sequence there. I am told the difference between the colinear and yagi is very pronounced. If like me you have trouble knowing where to point your beam try North (or South) it covers most, but then East and West is good too. My M2 yagi snapped at Director 5 (Element Seven) in a wild storm, but I was lucky as I had put a second cantilever rope on about a year ago after VK2ZXC and VK5NY suffered the same fate. If your yagi is creaking a lot, go up and have a look. Remedy cut off the offending section (6 inches) and resleeve it. I also put a sleeve inside the main mast attach section. There is no noticeable difference in SWR or performance and k6MYC said 3 to 6 inches off the lenght is not critical. Well I am back into TEP observation mode and realise that if we dont hear anyhting from now until March 29/30 then we arent going to hear anything. Daily I have long haul Es from VK4JH/VK4BRG/VK8VF. The cairns beacon is not on 52.445 and the Townsville 50.087 never got off the ground, so the only beacons are 50.057 VK8VF and 50.0775 VK4BRG on 50 and VK4ABP on 52.345 Mhz up North. There is little activity out of Alice Springs as VK8TM is abroad and VK8GF is busy, but the beacon is on 50.047 and should be audible at least in JA. The JA2IGY beacon on 15/01 was real good strength, and that is a comfort as the JA's are in hibernation and you have to make a phone call to get them on the air. 73 de Steve

I have just heard that Richard, G4CVI, is now Silent Key. Richard and I go back many years, in fact in 1981 I built his first QRO amp for 432MHz as a Christmas present, this is a very sad day! Richard or Dick as he was known completed the 1st UK EME 50MHz QSO with the USA with WA4NJP a few years ago.....we are very sad abt Richards departure.......... de Geoff GJ4ICD.....UKSMG and many others.

I have taken the personal greeting off the home page as it caused too much hassle for little return! I had to detect every single browser type and because the UKSMG site is used for testing in several Network Computer trials and WebTV expeiments which do not not yet support JavaScript. Please make sure that you are using versions 3.01 of Navigator and IE and you should be OK! 73 Chris

I would like to apologize to Steve, GW0GEI and everyone else who read my comments regarding non-receipt of his qsl card. Steve explained to me (and you) that there were extenuating circumstances and I accept that . I should have keept my comments to myself. I accept that too! Again, sorry for bringing controversy to the UKSMG and the Web Page. Sincerely, Steve

IC-756 Spectrum Scope - The scope works suprising well, although it severely lacks sensitivity. Has anyone worked out how to improve the sensitivity of the scope? I've had a look at the schem, and I think the scope info comes from the RF UNIT (J1 pin 12) with a label of SCPL. Perhaps increasing the gain of AMP stage IC961a might do it? (Bottom middle of RF UNIT schematic). Service Manuals aren't available over here yet, so I'm holding off a bit. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

In reply to the announcement by Steve N4JQQ. Thanks for the public flame ! If you had looked in six news you would have seen my email ad and a polite email would have got you a card. The phone call from Chris on Sunday led me to check back in my GM paper logs. Yes you are in the log. Having since read your comments on these pages I am tempted to send you back your envelope and ONE (1) dollar bill without a qsl. I dont know where all your money went but I have only received one qsl one envelope and 1 dollar. A relationship breakdown, a job change, and two address changes has sort of made a mess of my previously good qsl record. If you want to flame me please do so by email and I will be pleased to discuss the matter. I'm sorry the qsl has not been sent but sometimes there are more important things in life! I have counted up my outstanding direct qsl's this evening, having sorted them over xmas. There are 10 to reply to, including 5 international ones, of which one is yours. I will try to sort out all 10 this weekend. Yours will be sent via Chris WOS and will include your dollar bill. If there is anyone else out there desperate for a qsl from me please email me and I will send you one a.s.a.p. (no dollars required HI!!!) 73 Steve GW0GEI (formerly G0GEI and GM0GEI)

20th Jan: Hot! 42 degrees. Had 48 TV and 49 TV from North West from first observation at 0800z when the shack cooled down. Tried calling on 28.885 for JA liason, no takers. Will call on 50.110 and then QSY down to 50.107 CW or below, as many domestic cq calls on 50.110. I am in my TEP window which goes until end of feb but no one seems to share my enthusiasm to try to QSO. I think everyone is still suffering from Cycle 22 burnout. It was open to JA on 15/01/97 See you on the magic band.

Steve, I spoke with Steve, GW0GEI, this morning on the LL. He has some cards from his GM days. He will look in his log and make one out. I suggested he send it to me and I will forward it on to you. The UKSMG miracle workers strike again! 73 Chris

I realize this might be early too but I am trying to put a trip together this summer for FL14 & FL15, Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. I don't think they have been activated. I don't have dates yet but I am working with a Bahamian friend of mine who is a ham and lives on this island. Also, John, WZ8D, has offered to help get a beacon going at MY qth in FL-16. Hopefully this will happen. I know there are a lot of members in the UK who are trying to get C6. If we don't do it on e-skip, we will get you on F2. HI. ALSO: Does ANYONE know of a way to get a card from GM0GEI? I worked him on 30 Jan 91. He is my only GM on six so I am anxious to confirm him. I went through this exercise a couple of years ago and heard he was now GW0GEI and got his address, etc. I have sent this guy a lot of money. Hopefully he has a good excuse for not sending me and a lot of other ops cards and keeping our money! What is the story on this op. I would love to hear it. 73, Steve in Memphis, TN, home of ELVIS

TEP in the form of 48 and 49 MHz TVDX was copied in here all afternoon 0400z to 0730z 18/01/97. Despite calling on 50.110 50.107 and 28.885 I was not able to alert or raise a single amateur station outside of Australia. The calling frequency was clagged up by the remnants of the summer social season with countless calls from VK4 CQ South making it impossible to liase or listen for any weak responses to CQ calls. In VK the call channel is used like a shared toilet. Everyone and I mean everyone is parked there. There is no use of any other calling channel for domestic calling and although most people QSY off when establsihing a contact, the disruption to weak signal observing by 59 plus interstate signals can only be imagined. Overseas DX stations have a serious, and I mean serious problem in being heard down hear if they are not strong enough to overcome any local signals and local QRM, by some stations who will only QSY up to 50.120, splattering all over 50.110. I will as a matter of course now instatntly QSY DOWN to 50.107, to stay in touch with 50.110 with the hope that DX will have the sense to tune either side of 50.110, and I hope eventually to encourage any CW DX to use 50.105 and 50.100 hoping this doesnt put us all under TVDX birdies. I am QSX every day on 28.885, hoping someone will at least attempt a link up from the Northern hemisphere during these TVDX periods I am reporting. Does anyone out there share my attempts?

Announcing another 6m beacon. Currently operating in test and verification mode, KD4HLG/B is operating at 50.076 from EM73 (Conyers, Georgia - home of the 1996 Paralympic Equestrian Venue). It is running 10W into an AR6. Plans in the works are to have stepped power; 10, 5, 1 in a rotation to check on relative strength. After testing is completed, the QTH will be in Marietta, on the NW side of the Atlanta area. (Away from residential areas!) Comments and reception reports are welcome and desired. We have now put the www.uksmg.org web site on its own server so you should see a significant improvement in performance! I have had to do a lot of work to detect browser types thanks to all the JavaScript I am using. But I hope that NetScape 2.0 users and Communicator 4.0 ar now happy and can access the site. By the way PLEASE use the home buttons (at least once) rather than the 'back' button - try and spot why! Thanks guys! 73 Chris

(and probably elsewhere) is a slow over-congested disaster. It took 7 days for a bulletin from Steve VK3OT to travel via only 4 BBSs and 400km. What's wrong with this picture? My New Years resolution is a simple one: not to use or support packet anymore for the disemenation of six news and to encourage as many Six ops as possible to use the Internet instead. I posted a bulletin to six@ww annoucing the problems we are experiencing in Melbourne but funnily enough it was wiped off the face of this earth (probably by the VK3KSD sysop).
