Re JF6TAC. Thanks to Takahiro for his prompt reply to my QSL request. I heard Takahiro on Feb 18, sent my qsl to him on Feb 19 and received his card today February 28th. A round trip of 10 days. Golly, it would be nice if every ham did this!! Besides thanking this kind gentleman for such a quick response let us congratulate the Postal Servic. Please do not knock them anymore! My report to JF6TAC - QRA Locator PM43VE - was made intersting on two counts. I heard his CQ call but no replies. The beam heading was some 90 degrees off JA6 at the time. Bill GW3MFY TG9NX did not even bother to QSL VK8OT from 2000, when I asked him about it the other day on the cluster he responded my saying "Do I know you?" The final courtesy is the qsl and some ops out there are very discourteous, why bother to rack up qso's if they're not gonna qsl?

I just added a separate RX input to the IC706 this is very simple. There is a not used spare opening in the backpannel that is used to place an extra BNC.
Conneted with a short thin coax to J1 connector at the back
of the Filter board.
Usefull to connect a preamp etc.
Remarkable that such a compact set as the 706 even has a spare hole for this at its tiny backpannel.
But maybe should concentrate on the RF output more :-)

Could this be magic??? Heard today for the first time XV3AA with solid 57 out of the blue, gave him a call - what happens - power supplies died with a "pfiiiuuu", so connected as fast as I could to a spared one, swiched on again - what happens - heared XV3AA saying: sorry, powerline
down, getting weaker and weaker - quiet as it was before. So, is that (black) magic or not??? Vy 73 and enjoy your DX ;-)

So far the 50 foot boom 9 El M2 has held up here. It's up 110' AGL on the exposed summit of a hilltop. During a recent ice storm (~1/8" radial buildup) followed by severe gusts of up to 60 mph and shifting winds while I was sleeping, the mast to rotor joint slipped 55 degrees. So far I've been lucky with this monster but I may be pushing the limit at this very exposed location. The antenna is a great performer and I always try to keep it inline with high winds, using the 11 El Telrex as a backup. GL...

Today I managed to work Tim, V73AT for #171 ... no need to tell anyone that I was thrilled. I had been listening for about 30 minutes to noise, and then suddenly, BOOM ! there he was 539 CQ-ing. I could hear him for about 10 minutes with signals up to S9 ! He worked a lot of Italians, but I didn't hear him make many QSO's in my 'neighbourhood'. QTF was about 30 degrees... MAGIC !
I didn't hear a blip of the KH2 though. But hey, you can't have'em all. Save some for later :-)

as far as im concerned , im a detective on 6m band and to do my job correct i have to know ever piece of info thats available, who,when,qtf, etc so that i can build a picture of what is happening regarding propagation in order to have the best chance of working any stations that are around, so keep up the good work all those stations that supply all the important information we ALL need .... all quiet at the moment in io75 ..73 all ..ray

vk3pa bring a trailer and you can have my old broken early model 11 el M2 all you need is new boom, it has pedigree but like my KL7 M2 JHV7 eventually broke up in strong winds. VK2ZXCs early M2 11 also broke up several times as did VK5NY's 11 2.5 wl and KL0FZ's JHV 7. The M2 9's however haven't broken cos we used Aussie 1/4 inch thickwall scaffold booms.

By the way Adam I merely lost the printed matter that came with the antenna, it has been up almost 3 years so I can't complain, the JHV is a fine antenna. My shack is remote from home and on top of a hill with open fields all the way round. That is why I need a more robust antenna, for most people the JHV would be fine.

It is a genuine M2 6M7JHV The failure was caused by several things 1. We have had a constant stream of high winds in excess of 50 mph for many weeks this probably caused fatigue 2. The wind was very squally yesterday and was 80 mph 3.The rotator brake trip engaged and wouldn't let me move the antenna at a crucial moment so the antenna ended up across the wind for a few fatal seconds. The weather has been appalling and claimed my 2m eme array as well. I won't remember this winter too fondly apart from all the great DX on 6m! I am going for a standard 6M7 this time which is a little shorter but much more robust.73

Beers expected! With my 15 meters long 11 el M2 yagi pointed east and looking more like a ”v-antenna” in the +25 m/s snowstorm I suddenly heard the 9U5D beacon! It was very hard to rotate the antenna the 90 degrees fighting the storm. After a telephone call to Gus we made a nice and easy “first”. So guys, now you know who is to blame/thank for your new country!

My litle mobile excursion up the slopes of the volcano yesterday was worthwhile, despite not hearing any of the three dxpeditions I was hoping for. My thanks to Alberto, LU2EG, Antonio, LU2FFD and Carlos, LU2NI for enjoyable QSOs from a 6,400ft. perch, my 100 watts and loop 15' above my truck...My first portable session since moving here and it remined me of the fun of going mobile now and then. Nice and quiet up there, too! Even heard the CO2FRC/B (I think)weakly on 50.082...

RE: IC736 mod's. D15 should be removed and D14 installed. This will give you general TX/RX from 30kHz-33MHz and 45MHz-60MHz. At least it will be on the display. Don't try to TX to far out of the ham bands. Your PA and build in tuner is not designed to do that job! And these powerFET's are expensive. D22 will be only installed in rigs for the Japanese market.
And yeh...V73AT. I heard him just above the noise while he worked YU and DL. Gave a call and a joker (at 559 fluttery sig's)responded. Made me happy for at least one hour untill I played back the recording...So let's hope Murphy will have mercy for us those hard, eight hours a day, QRLers! Hope some day scientists will discover a VHF evening band. Just to make competition a bit more equal! 73's

Ray having just listened to the V73AT audio files on your website I have realised just how futile it was calling Tim that day, he was in for 10 mins but at least 30dB weaker! Today worked 8 JA's and VK6JQ for a new grid, could have worked a lot more JA's but was listening for...... yep V73AT who was audible for 2 mins at 419!!

OH1SIX is back! After few months QRT time Finlands first 6 mtrs beacon is back on the air on 50025 KHz. There was a lack of the power - now the beacon runs 25 watts into stacked v-dipoles. Next summer we will renew the antennas.

What a way to start a day - yesterday V73AT, today XV3AA for two vy rare new ones..TNX!..also 2day hrd weak JAs, a VU, and a weak HL1. VK6 beacon in for hours, best 599, but only traces of VK6JQ and VK6HK here. DU1/GM4COK strong all morning. Amazing. VK6 beacon gone 12:18Z - what´s next? :-)

Tony V73 is always going to be tough from G. The path is polar and DL,PA,OZ,SM,SP etc will be very much stronger.Tim has a very good station as well.That kind of propagation is a great leveller, I rather think someone in G will work V73AT this week but I suspect it will be IO91,J001, still never say never!

Hi , great to work JA6IDJ tdy SSB. Masa vistited my qth a while ago and we said that one day we would have a qso on 50mhz!!
His grid is PM42XV, buckmaster address is correct, direct only at the moment.
He was using FT655+amp, 7 ele yagi 17magl, qth 100masl.
Unfortunately he is away from tomorrow till the end of Feb so dont worry if your qsl's take a while!!!
Only downside was hearing VK4ABW 51 and not getting through :-(

Heard V73AT for 10 mins peaking s3 at 10:08 perfectly workable but couldn't crack the DL/PA pile. Congrats to those who worked him, tricky path here he was peaking at QTF 15 degrees.I never expected to even hear V73, I heard 5 or 6 JA's also but left them to concentrate on V73.Regards

Re qsl cards - I use VQLog and find the qsl card printing very convenient. The details print directly onto the background picture, no sticker required. I can print various picture cards according to whether I was at home or /MM and I always sign the card with my name.

RE: TF8ITT QSL. I do use a computer logging program and laser print labels to answer/request QSL cards. For those who had my QSL card knows that I placed a verified stamp and hand signature in between the label and the card. The TF8ITT QSL card received doesn't have any seal, mark or hand written signature on the front nor the back of the card. TF8ITT just printed it out the card on his color inkjet printer, cut it nicely to standard QSL size and postal mail it to me. He didn't bother to sign it or put a seal or mark on the card for autentication process. Why bother to wait 25 days for the round trip to get the QSL card, if he can e-mail me the card image and I can print it out in my home color printer. I am happy if ARRL can accept this card and give me credit for my 6M DXCC.

Any qsler or manager worth his salt is placing a verified stamp/seal across the label and the card. The labels are synthetic non water based glue and wont steam off. The ARRL has very sophisticated detection for fraudulent cards, why risk it for some perceived status? Why even think it? Its a hobby and honour system and as Tony h says we aint playing for any post offices. One US gentleman called me years ago and said he scammed the ARRL by printing any dx card you desired. he aint a dxcc memeber anymore, he was DEFROCKED.

QSLs. I think Jose has a good point. There is a lot of responsibility on the DXCC card checkers now to know the kind of cards the DX station uses. I have been puzzling for some time over the number of cards which just have computer-generated labels with no signatures. In many cases it would not take a genius to steam off a label for a 10-metre contact and replace it with one for six metres. Hopefully we must assume that dishonest claimants are a tiny minority?

I received today in my post office box TF8ITT QSL card for #109 confirmed. Thanks Jonas for new country and zone. The QSL card looks like and eqsl (electronic qsl)type printed out at home in a color inkjet printer. All the details of the QSO are printed directly in the QSL card. There is no hand signature on the QSL CARD. You can take a look at http://www.qsl.net/hp2cwb/fotos/dxcc/TF8ITT.jpg . I could easily print this card myself at home if I retreive it directly from the internet at eqsl.cc. My question is since ARRL DXCC does not give credit to eqsl. Is this card good for DXCC submition? Without any hand signature on the card is this card good for DXCC?

Qsl's, I hate 'em, BUT anyone who want's one gets one, it's time we stopped cutting down trees to make silly cards. E' QSL is what I want ASAP!. Re 4U1ITU operation in August 2001. I still have a number of QSL cards awaiting collection:

I2YWR and I2YSB. If they are not claimed by the end of March they are off to the bureau and as I don't
have any more 4U1ITU cards I will not be able to respond to direct requests. You will either have to wait for the bureau
card or send dircect to the IARC address for 4U1ITU in Geneva. This is the other side of QSLing - you can't
get rid of them!

hi all,
Recently I blow up my FT102 mains transformer.. in the PACC test..
Now use the IC706 backup.
Did anyone ever modified the IC706 for having a separate RX
only input? There is a spare opening in the backpannel for some optional BNC??
I did not find this information at the fb MOD.DK site
Otherwise i have to find out my self and need the technical
documentation of the IC706 to make that easy.
The separate RX input is very convenient for connecting
a preamp or bandfilter etc whithout risk of distroying it
by the tx output.
And about a certain african activity i would say have mercy
with the weekend hams noth of the evening tep zone..

To G0JJL, Dear OM, I want to preform the mod to gain some extra RX freqencies as the ICOM IC 736 covers 0-30 & 45-60
I,m not interested in TXing out off band and I don't want to jeopardize my licence because of that.
Next month I,ll have to show up for my 6 meter licence and
I want to be ready for it(equimentwise so to speak)
The reason for the mod is to gain a few mcs filling the gap between 30-45 mhz, as a DX monitor tool!
My rig comes direct from the US, and ICOM america told me it was possible to do this mod, to fill atleast a little
bit of this gap.
My HAM friend in the US is checking this out just now

Regarding mods to radio equipment you should be aware that if the mod enables your transmitter to operate outside of the ham bands for your particular country then you could be breaking the law. In the Uk the licence is granted to cover installation as well as use. So if your radio transmits on say 60Mhz after being modified you would require a licence, which would not be granted as ham equipment is not type approved unlike like other radio equipment meant for use in the UK. The law says it is a criminal offence in the UK. See info sheet RA67 "The Radio Users guide to the Law" at www.radio.gov.uk. Better to keep it legal!

Hans, the diodes are used to set the region the radio is sold, so USA will have different diode placings to Europe. If you do not get any definate advise, try various combinations of diodes, I did this on my Kenwood TS690 to give full Rx up to 60MHz. Seem to rememeber I had to remove 2 diodes but then use one of them in a space where previously there was no diode (it was 10 years ago so a bit hazy now on how I did it). Be careful though as you may give yourself extra Tx coverage as well (my 690 now Tx's above 7.1MHz on the 40m band).

Hi all,
Who knows if therse a mod to fill the gap between 45>60 Mhz
on my ICOM IC736.
Icom america told me to cut (remove) D15 & D14 from the logicboard, but this one has only D15 to cut.
After the mod the radio should at least cover 3 extra Mc
up to 33Mhz
Having those extra few Mc's could be very handy to monitor
the riging MUF towards the magic band.

Anyone know if JK4USZ and JA1DDH are valid calls? Don't see any JK4's listed in the databases (closest is a JE4 w/ same suffix but diffrenet grid and 1st name...)and can't find the JA1. I didn't get the impression that they were pirates or bogus operators and I'm 98% sure I copied their calls correctly. Is there a way of looking up new JA callsigns recently issued ala the FCC database equivalent? If so, imagine info would be in Japanese characters...! 5U6W was "blasting" through here at 10.30z in IO93 square. I wonder if anyone has got the exact Grid Locator Square for the 5U6? If so please show it on the UKSMG Announcement page as I feel sure many other hams would like to know it! As the HB9 station mentioned earlier the operator tried very hard by working split. But he stayed just above the calling channel and the split was very narrow. I do wish these operators who call on the calling channel would move well up once they have made contact. Its so crazy when they "block" the channel to others wishing to get through. I know you have heard this all before! But hopefully the message will get through in time. I must congratulate the 5U team who are doing a tremendous job on the HF and LF Bands. I think I have heard them on eight bands now. Sorry for the brag!! Unfortunately the tales of woe re: 5U are a common thread
in HF expeditions. More often than not, "6M" is more
of an annoyance or afterthought than anything else at all.
It's a fact of life; Until 6m stays open 10-12hrs a day, year after year (like 10m) (and of course this is an impossibility), 6m will continue to be treated as a novelty
like Satellite, RTTY, PSK31, etc. This only way to insure
constant 6m activity is to have a dedicated 6m op who is KEEN on the band and knows his/her stuff. I used to complain
too, and I feel your pain, missing the 5U like you guys have, but I have come to accept that it's just a fact of life
in "HF" expeditions. Not much we can do about it, unless
we furnish these expeditions with ops ourselves! HI HI!

Well said Conrad - What a frustrating day !! Had 5U audio in for over 4 hours today up to S9+40 . Tried to get the 5U DXped guys to qsy from HF to 6mtrs and was told - no can do , no ops !!despite me telling them the band was open.
Can some of our southern Eu ops ask them to at least keep a rig on 50110 and listen once in a while during the daytime.

To all EI readers. Is anyone thinking of going to the UKSMG AGM and dinner in Crewe on 6 April from EI? I'm looking at logistics and I'm not absolutely

Once again the path to 5U has been wide open to N.EU. The 5U ops do not wish to come on 6m. I urge one of the Iatlian speaking 6m ops to inform them of the situation. Their practice of coming on 6m late evening for the southern med is upsetting to say the least, most of the southern med already worked 5U. Please try to get them to come on 6m at 12:00 utc for a few hours, it's not like they won't have a pileup!73

Hi Gary, Cock n Bull, top of hill - surprised you remember one by the harbour, hi. Still going through IC706 diags (that site Bob sent the link for is amazing - tech diags for nearly every rig I've ever heard of...), narrowing it down. It has to be filters or switching, just need to find the bit that can cause my symptoms, but it probably will have to go to "hospital" anyway :-( Just glad I didn't dispose of the old kit when I upgraded the station!!! Normal service but with only 25W output and less dynamic range on RX... 73 all

WOW! Terrific afternoon here in KH6... PY's, JR6, JA's and BV6JD 54 to 56, all ssb .110 to .135. Crazy opening with Asia & SA going at same time--but nice to be caught right in the middle!! Missed the VR2's that were into the other side of KH6 (wkd by Ron, WH6O in BL01)as well as VK9NS who was spotted wkg JA's, etc. Well, guess I shouldn't get greedy, but this spate of DX has me hungry for more... IRC's: Old irc's are still in use here in PA land. But the old ones are not good for a stamp out of Europe any more. I had to pay a little extra. Every old irc is calculated as the old value DFL.1,60. A stamp out of Europe is €0,75 which is about DFl.1,65. Within Europe I can still use them. So be carefull using these old IRC's across the world.

ZB2EO QSL recieved yesterday, making 98 cfmd of 109 on 6 meters for me. Still waiting on E3, PJ, IS0, JX, Z3, 9A, SP, LY, JY, ER & VP2V. 9U5D As Beacon
I like to inform you that I have my IC-706 working as a Beacon on 50072.0 when I am not in my Shack.
I have reduced power output to 20 Watts to not heat up the transceiver too much.
The antenna is a 3 el. beam I direction North.
The Beacon sends a series of “bips” followed by callsign, 9U5D.

VK3SIX - For what its worth, I have worked YU1EU 7 times on 6m (2001=cw). Never worked YU1IU. You probably worked YU1EU. On the YU4, that I think is the Serbian part of Bosnia. I would assume that the licence may not have been issued from Sarajevo so will not count for DXCC. Only an assumption.

I have processed most cards for Feb 3rd opening, but am having trouble getting addresses for the following stations:
0758z 9A4HK, 07:55z 9A7WV, S51DY 0808z, ON5NT 08:23z, SP8UFT 08:28z, ON5PU 08:31z, DK2PH, DL7BU, DL8AK, 0834z-0836z: DJ6RX 08:45z, IW1CCS but now know that was IW1CCH. All I1 cards gone to IW1DIM thanks. Also does anyone know the status of YZ4IZ with Bosnia qth in CBA is he legit qso with Bosnia for DXCC purposes? Also YU1IU can't email him for details either. Some EUs must update their QRZ/Buckmaster listing, one French guy has different addresses and LOC in either entry. There are probably callsign miscopies in the lot above and also a couple of partials with OE stations, so email if you can prove your claim with time and the rst that I sent you. VK3SIX.

XW0X is not interested in DXCC but he is a 100% QSLer.
I have sent two cards and received two in return. First was delayed
probably due to XMAS jam. I know that there are problems as
others did not received yet but I pressume that the problem
lies with Laotian/local Post Offices. An e-mail to Hiroo always
pays despite the linguistic problems.

I am unable to resurect the VK3SIX beacons under Clause 9 (1) (d) of the Australian LCD as clarified by
the ACA's licencing branch. Interpretation of the LCD
is that it does not apply where the purpose of a
transmitter is as a beacon. Basically, if it looks like a beacon, smells like a beacon, tastes like a beacon, then it's a beacon and must be licenced as such. $200 per year I think which I cannot justify. VK3SIX may be resurected under VK3RMV but its licenced to another site too close to hamilton and it wipes out the band as we found out in 1995. The cuase of this sage was that someone established a PSK31 2m beacon in melbourne and now as a result any manned beacons like VK4ABP, VK4BRG have to close down by law.

Long QSO with Hiro XW0X on 20m this evening - he says he is QRT on 6m at the moment because he is short of coax cable, and is using his 6m feeder on LF at the moment. He is hoping to get more cable, and be back on 6m March/April. Hiro says he has worked 800 Eu stations approx., in about 26 countries + EA9, but says he is not really very interested in 6m DXCC. I told him how much his activity on 6m. is appreciated. 73

EI - Foreign Operation. Paul (G4IJE), Yes, a permit is still needed to operate on 6m in EI, even for EI stations. Avoiding interference to Cable-TV systems is still a big issue here.

PA2VST BAD NEWS BAD NEWS BAD NEWS. His decoder cant decode TEP he was 559 here and could not get my callsign to read on his screen. Also the decoder does handle dogpiles like a human, So am I in the log or not? I bet I'm not cos he cant read CW except on a reader, thats an unfair way of missing a new country. Any overseas members thinking of coming to the UKSMG AGM in April, might be thinking ….how do I get there? It’s even easier than a near London venue, so please give it a try. Fly to Manchester Airport, the railway link is inside Terminal 1, there are direct trains to Crewe, 2 or 3 times an hour (apart from the middle of the night). The train journey takes 35 minutes.
I’d estimate you are looking at a 15 minute taxi ride to Reaseheath College, Nantwich, Cheshire.

Sorry but on roders from the Victoria office of the ACA following complaints from S/E Queensland about the running of my beacons (unmanned) they have been closed down. So one of the worlds best beacons on 6 and 10 is closed due to some bloody minded individual. VK3SIX transmitted 10 years from that site and consumed 10,700 kW of electricity and cost $1700 to run, all private funding. It appears VK4ABW and VK4BRG may suffer the same fate if the ops do not stay at home while the beacon is running.

Alain, F6BFH (aka XU7ABW), reports that he has received the printed
QSL cards for XU7ABW, XU7ABY, XU7ABZ and XU7ACA from IK1PML. He states
that he will send the QSLs to his friends that were active as XU7ABY,
XU7ABZ and XU7ACA for processing. Alain has already answered some of
the direct QSLs for XU7ABW and is trying to answer the many QSLs as
quickly as possible. LAST MINUTE UPDATE: Alain reports that 650 direct
QSLs for XU7ABW (AS-133) and the 50 MHz operation are now in the mail.
He mailed the last package this past Saturday morning at the post
office. The cards for the QSL bureau are ready too, but he will send
them at the end of the month to the R.E.F Bureau.

I will be in CHILE (CE3) for two weeks, beginning around Mar 15-April 2. Will be operating from my country house in Talagante (GL:FF46), about 45 km from Santiago heading toward the coast. Clear shot to Europe (70 km east of the Andes). Will have large (2WL)six meter yagi at 20 meters high, and run IC-746 and IC-736.

in USA/CANADA (lower 48) beaming due south. J37RO in for hours and hours. Took a while to make it into log. Sloooow
going in the SSB pileup on 110 (no split) but at least she was QRV. Might someone suggest "split" to her tomorrow

I Know when to call again for a DUPE . 13 Jan I got thr ough the howling pile up and got 6W4RK He said " G0OVA 59 but QRX I have a phone call " ( plainly heard in background ) I waited 3-4 minutes expecting him (naively ) to pick up with me. When he returned he said " QRZ ? " which unleached a wall of EU sound. " Oh " I thought at least I'm in the log " Imagine when my QSL was returned so PROMPTLY the horror I felt !! Incidentally the quickest return from " F " ever !! MORAL Always call again if the DX goes for a pee-break telephone call, or whatever. Also I did ' nt imagine it .... about 10 days later another station told me he had heard the exchange. Oh

Hello:
I wonder if anyone has any experience using a Kenwood TS-870 HF xcvr as an IF for a vhf transverter? I have gotten a SSB LT-6S transverter to replace my overload-prone and noise blanker-challenged (politically correct terms for rotten) FT-847. I am curious how good the 870 noise blanker is, and whether the frequency display can be altered via menu for the 50, 144,and 432 Mhz bands like the TS-850? Thanks for any help you can give. 73

Rec'd cards from DU1ZV, XE1/G3SVD, V73AT (nice sunset!), V73GT and JA2DDN recently and thought I'd say "Thanks!" as these are among my first DXCC's here at new QTH...Now I'm going outside to start putting together 7JHV at long last (been heavy rainstorm last three days in a row--sun's back this morning)...73 to all, & here's hoping for F2 in coming weeks!

Hi all, Agree with G0VHQ - not good for southern end of the UK or the Channel Islands today. Only sigs heard were the video and VP5/G4RCG on CW. Despite reaching 549 and CQing with no takers, still couldn't hear me. Maybe next time. And Peter, 'BCG - shame on you, breaking tradition like that... ;-) anyway, you'll have my /mm QSL soon. ALL cards going into the buro tomorrow, except direct ones which are already sent. 73

Tony, 8P9HW..lucky you, took the day off today and heard nothing except 6hrs of Asian video. Plus we have 70mph winds at the moment after a week of storms, so the aerial isn't going to stay up much longer. Unlike last cycle this one seems to be favouring the north rather than the south of the UK, very little here for the past week or so :-(

Hi Cliff, Hi Fred, I think that Fred (iw1dim) warning was refer to a list mistake... In the precedent issue of the list my score was 195 country... after my update to 199 the list refer 156 country. A simple type mistake I think! Now my score is 201 dxcc entry (if rx9fm is a valid one) + fr/g (not good for dxcc). See you all on 6m!

RE: World all-time country standings table.. Hi Freddy, Please remember this table ONLY contains the scores claimed by those who are listed in the table. Chris WOS as far as I am aware does not take scores claimed from other tables. So Freddy if you want to be ahead of Sergio send Chris your score! Its easy just fill in the form which is included with the table.. 73's and happy DXing

Friday 2nd Feb is the last day of activity for VP5/G4RCG on 6m, he will be QRV from 12:30 UTC on 50.105 CW, John apologises to those who called him today, they have a power transformer adjacent to the shack which has been misbehaving for the last 2 days. It has severly raised his noise floor and made it difficult to copy. He has no cw filters on the IC706 I believe which does not help. Good luck to all who need it.73
