Dave, I have sent some QSL's via a back door method and I KNOW that they have been put into EK6AD's hands - so far he has declined to return anything - that was 3 weeks ago - I can only hope he does so. So getting the cards there , and knowing it doesnt mean that a reply will be certain. This was not by DHL - a much cheaper but very much more reliable route. As for EX8MLT etc - cards sent by registered - back in a week - but that was last year before the rush started. Good luck!!!

Re my last announcement concerning QSLs for EK6AD and EX8MLT. The DHL charge from Dublin to Armenia or Kirghizstan would be EUR 51.50 door to door. That makes the individual cost to the nearest 50 cents / 50 pence (assuming current numbers interested) of EUR 10.50 or GBP 6.50 to EK6AD and EUR 7.50 or GBP 4.50 to EX8MLT. The costs are probably a little high for some, so would anyone else like to join in the scheme to get cards delivered to these two stations? Of course there is still no guarantee that a QSL will be received but I have sent Emails to both stations explaining what is proposed and also asking for the cost in US$ per card they require to send back a card. I'll leave it another week to see who else is interested before calculating final cost and checking that everyone is in agreement. 73s

Re Use of Courier for EK6AD and EX8MLT QSLs Just a quick update. I've had 4 expressions of interest for the possibility of using a courier to deliver QSLs to EK6AD and 6 expressions of interest for EX8MLT. I'll first Email the two stations (if Email available) to seek their agreement and also investigate costs. I'll then reply to those that have sent me Emails expressing interest. Best 73s

Just had the distinct thrill of working K1B on 50.110 ssb at 0747z today for their first 6M qso from Baker Island. Milo (YU1AU, 6m op) was 59+ into KH6 and I worked him with my 20 watts into 7 el. He also worked NH6YK, NH7CJ, ???/KH6 (probably K6MIO on the other side of the mountain)and FO3BM before qsy'ing off the band... All this excitement happened exactly one month since the incredible KH6-EU/CT3/EH8 longpath extravaganza of 29 March--guess the solar rotation came into play once again!

Yes thanks for changing the Home Page. The new solar activity link is also a lot more informative. My comment was a suggestion that said that if I am in minority then do not change. Also I did include some positive encouragement re the Standings Page. I guess in these few sentence blurbs the tone can be misinterpreted. As always thanks for listening and the effort that is involved in keeping this site up and running and also updated. 73

Those of you commenting on the developments on the website will perhaps not have noticed that our webmaster took note of the complaints about the homepage and very quickly removed the offending content a couple of days ago... I'm sure he'd welcome a 'thanks for listening' comment to go with the somewhat harshly worded complaints. You can't make an omlette without breaking eggs - there are lots of new things we're planning with the site, and we welcome constructive feedback. 73 Peter

Mike, VE9AA, I've noted you becoming quite bogged down with your house move and possible TVI over recent months. I have 50+ houses within 100m and 10 within 50m. Most EMC issues can be cured with simple measures and the rest with a little thought. Here's my plan for you. (1) move (2) invite all your neighbours to a house warming (3) get your tower/ant application in that same week (4) spend the next weeks making every possible filter combination you might need for your area (5) fit filters same day anyone complains. EMC is 80% Public relations and 20% technical. Good Luck!

re: "Vertical & Above" article by HB9RUZ & HB9MFD recently added to the UKSMG pages. I *REALLY* enjoyed the articles and also the whole idea. I'm soon moving to an area with no cable TV and few satellite TV users, so I will probably have trouble with QRM to local TV's. Has anyone had any luck with H/V/RHCP/LHCP on 6m (or 2m I guess) using yagis oriented "x" rather than "+".? Would be interested in obtaining details on the relays/phasing lines, etc. Thanks ---Mike

i have been testing, researching etc anti virus programs and viruses etc for 6 years, i support 600 members of my pc club as the anti virus helpline, and i can advise you that if you are using any version of outlook express lower than version 6 with the latest patches, you are likely to be a victim of worm attacks, and if you use the preview pane in an earlier version, it is a timebomb, get the latest version NOW, with all the patches, there is about 700 to 800 new viruses, worms and trojan or variants released each MONTH, in some cases you will not know you have a worm on the pc until you get complaints. update the ENGINE of anti virus programs as often as possible as well as the normal def/dat file updates. hope you dont mind this bit of advice. nil on 6 here, band dead for days. cheers graham

Why is this site being held hostage by the solar report on the first page. I think it should be a link. Many times have waited for a long time for it to load and have no interest in it. If I am in minority then fine it stays, but think most use other sources for this kind of information. Usually the sites that have this info are a lot more informative also ie...http://dx.qsl.net/propagation/propagation.html takes a while to load (10sec) but that is why I go there (for info, not STORM,CALM or whatever). I do however like the upgrade to the standings page. My .02c. 73

Viruses: Why don't you all run virus protection? I (probably like many others) have received over two dozen e-mails containing viruses from various ham sources in the last week or so. Strangely, not all of the attachments have been executables with quite a few being jpgs or other media files(?) How hard can it be to run NAV or something similar and keep your definitions up to date? I sincerely hope those who don't protect themselves due to sheer laziness are seriously inconvenienced with their infected pcs now. Trouble is your laziness also causes others to be inconvenienced one way or another. $0.02

Re QSLS from EX8MLT and EK6AD, if anyone is interested in joining a shared cost scheme to courier cards to these guys by DHL or UPS etc, please let me know at above Email address. I believe this approach has already resulted in the successful receipt of cards by post. I haven't checked costs as yet but the more interested the cheaper it would be!

Thanks to all who have commented on my enquiry about "missing" QSL's from EX8MLT. The consensus of opinion is that mail is not getting through to Oleg. Oleg suggest that anyone wanting to qsl him to register your envelope. That's all very well but does it really guarantee that it will get there? I think not and I will never take that route. We are probably talking about having to pay 5 US Dollars. Ok, I will pay that if its a special dxpedition. But not even to get a qsl card from P5!! It seems that Oleg EX8MLT shares the same PO Box as Sergey EX8MLE. Sergey has a QSL Manger to do his qsling. Now you would have thought Oleg would have done the same knowing the problams over there. So at the end of the day I have e-mailed my report to Oleg asking him to send a reply through the bureau. That is if they have a bureau in Kirghiz! 73.............David

RE:not received cards. Your postal office can hand you a reclamation form so they can try to recover your lost letter. I'm doing this now for my lost cards to EX and EK. Might be a good idea for the rest of you to try. If you send your letter by registered mail every hand-over must be recorded so they can track the thief after all. Help to get those guys fired and fill in a form. I don't even have to pay for the stamps to get this form on the way!! How more the better I think.

Just read the posting by WIA VIC DIV and matched it with stuff across my desk from the ACA EMR meetings. We in Broadcasting have to raise a site radiation folder for EVERY transmission site and link hut. After hearing a comment made on 10M yesterday by a VK2 when asked what power level do you guys run over in VK on 6M, 100 watts? and the happless VK2 said "So the theory goes" As a Broadcast Engineer of 30 yeras I have buried two friends this year who died of Prostate cancer (They were both rf workers who climbed commercial installations) I have also lost VK3BV Ian VK3BEH Eric VK3AKC Ron and N6AMG Joel all from lukemia. And I dont have many friends. Don't kid yourself if you open a linear lid when it is running, or run VHF qro as they say in VK on a drink driving advert "You are a b---dy idiot".

Mike VE9AA Great idea but you only mentioned the antennas. That's an awful ly long feeder run if you're going to keep your rig indoors or are you going to use masthead devices on RX and a very large TX amplifier to overcome feeder losses, or build a nice shack in the field next to the tower. Anyway good luck with the project! 73s

It is interesting to read of you guys trying to get QSLs...afraid I'm just lazy [and penny-pinching] and only use the bureau. Not a good idea of course. I'm amazed when I look into the log to see just how many cards I've sent out over the last 18 months, and look at the shack wall to count the cards received and find it totally blank. I WILL have to get some IRCs...that is when I find anyone on 6 to contact...then I look into the log again and see that it wasn't till July that I managed anything on 6 last year...and then ended up with 15 countries by the end of the year; but then that's what 6 is all about...patience and perseverence. It's a good teacher!!!!!!

Has anyone ever lived on one plot of land, but had their tower several hundred feet away on a rented/leased/etc. tiny tower sized plot? How has this worked out for you? How much did you pay per year? This may work out for me, for a 10' x 10' plot of land but I want to work out the costs (to be fair) and be aware of any problems you guys may have run into. My purpose is to get my (6Meter) antennas WAAAAAAYYYY away from neigbours up into an empty farmers field ~400' from my new house. Australias ACA continues to refine its proposed EMR controls which will apply to all 6M operators as well as HF. The introduction of Electromagnetic Radiation limits for amateur stations is expected to occur on the 1st of July, but the Australian Communications Authority has revealed further refinements to its proposed EMR regime. The ACA held a workshop on Wednesday the 17th of April in Canberra attended by the Wireless Institute of Australia and 35 industry and government representatives. A report issued by Gilbert Hughes VK1GH, who with Keith Malcolm VK1ZKM represented the WIA at the ACA workshop, advises that the ACA's earlier announced three levels of compliance have now been reduced to a two-tier compliance schedule. Gil VK1GH says most amateur stations are expected to fall under what is described as "Compliance Level 1", resulting in minimal impact on the amateur service. Level 1 is to require self-assessment of stations to ensure they comply with the EMR exposure limits. The ACA will maintain a right to request an expert qualified measurement if it has genuine concerns. Compliance Level 1 requires station operators to ensure that the average total power fed to all antennas not exceed 100 watts average power, measured over the 6-minute period. It is believed that a distance criteria is likely to be added to minimise the possibility of any person including the station operator being able to readily touch the antenna. Another alternative criteria for Level 1 is that the bottom of the lowest antenna is at least 10 metres above the ground level AND the average transmit power (EIRP) does not exceed 3200 watts when measured from any angle. Compliance Level 2 is for higher power commercial installations, and these will require detailed and documented measurements by qualified person or an accredited laboratory. The ACA is still consulting with the WIA and industry, and another EMR workshop will be held in about five weeks. The ACA has not changed its key target dates for implementation of the EMR regime which are the 1st of July 2002 for new licensees, the 1st of October for existing licensees. From Joe EI3IX:Just to let you know that I hope to travel to Inishkea(South island) which is of the Mayo coast either on the 11th or 12th May, subject to ferry etc. There are 2 WAI squares on the south island F51 & F52. The maidenhead locator is IO44. I intend operating on HF (Mainly 7.068Mhz), VHF/UHF (2M, 4M, 6M & 70Cm). I will be using inverted V's for HF, yagis for 2M & 70Cm, Vertical for 4M. Possibly a vertical for 6 meters. If there is any change with the dates due to any unforseen problems I will try and give as much notice as possible.

Hi all ! Talked to Eduardo CO8LY on 40 meters and he told me that his total countries worked is now 49 !!! And that he already has 23 confirmed with the QSLs and two more QSLs at his manager's QTH. Seems like his location is much better ( Eastern Cuba ) than mine here in Western Cuba. He just worked Japan, New Zealand and Australia at around 1500 UTC and he thinks he also worked South Korea but not sure. He is a good CW operator and has a foreign QSL manager Now I am helping him to build a better antenna. His work as ATC Controller leaves lots of time to monitor 6 meters !!! 73 and DX Arnie Coro CO2KK Cuba's only 6 meter operator for many years and now very happy with at least CO2OJ, CO8DM and CO8LY also on the air on 6 !!!

Re EK6AD: Remember, that I got 1 or 2 cards via bureau. BTW, my experience with direct-QSLs to East-Europe is, that many letters with included IRC's or $ seems to be stolen. Seems, too many people on the route needs the money... Why we dont't use our bureaus? Many of needed 6m-cards came back via bureau, e.g. UN3G, UN7QX, EM5U, UT0AZA, also VK4ABW, JH, FNQ, ZS6'ers, S92DX, Z21FO or PY's, a.s.o. I think, within the last years many of us have forgotten, that most of us have excellent working QSL-bureaus or reliable managers in most parts of the world. Of course, if somebody needs the card for his next DXCC-entry, he have no time to wait... 73 & GL

Thanks, Costas for ZR5 call--I'll email him and let him know he was heard in KH6. I qrz'd several times with only the 20-25 watts of my transverter while I waited for the amp to warm up...by then, he was gone, of course. His signal literally came out of nowhere--I heard no ZS beacons before or after the minute-long opening... Greetings, Earlier this year, The San Diego Six Shooters Amateur Radio Club was asked to field test a prototype radio for Ranger Communications. This radio is a 50 watt/100 watt version of the earlier introduced RCI-5054DX. After putting the radio through its paces and playing with it for a period of just over 8 weeks, we are proud to present a "first look" at the new RCI-5054DX-100. This radio is currently at the FCC to be type accepted. We hope you enjoy preview. http://n6six.50megs.com/ Hope to hear you on SIX! 73 de N6SIX Joe Acevedo President, San Diego Six Shooters Amateur Radio Club http://n6six.50megs.com/ n6six@earthlink.net ICQ: 112250482

JT44 again proved its worth. Worked ZD8DB on backscatter using JT44 between 2015-2030 this evening with signals far too weak for CW. Both of us were beaming Europe, Dave was using only 80 watts and 3 elements. Last ZS6 to ZD8 that I know of was April 1989, this is a tough path for us. Thanks to K1JT for a great VHF weak signal tool. Still looking for someone in JP-KP that would like to run some tests.

I need to purchase one of those cheap and nasty “all in one” CD players. I’ll be using separate (filtered) wall mounted speakers. Can anyone recommend a make/model that appears bomb proof from LF up to 6m? I’m reluctant to get shut of my old Hitachi unit that can withstand an 8877 into a LF vertical less than 10ft away with no filtering at all, but times move on (usually for the worse where EMC is concerned!) XYL has told me if I interfere with her new “Anastacia” CD I’m in trouble, so pressure is on. What do I guide her towards and stay away from this weekend please?

Thanks to UKSMG & the RSGB VHF C'tee for organising an excellent meeting in Reaseheath, really enjoyable!. It was pleasant to meet old and new friends, and to finally put faces to some long-standing VHF colleagues. It was refreshing to see the event hosted in a location which was central to the UK.

Graham, three categories: - the "new" IRCs are big nearly as much as a QSL card. They have been issued very recently and expire in 2006 - the "old" IRCs are the usual ones. They are light yellow and were on sale until recently - the "very old" IRCs, which are blue. These are no longer redeemable since long. 73

Regarding IRC's. Check the following link: http://www.upu.int/irc/en/index.html to read what the UPU has said about IRC's ingeneral, but then follow the link on the bottom of the page for the 2002 version of the IRC. If i'm reading that right, the old IRC's remain valid for exchange indefinitely, yet it would seem the new ones have a fintate life. 73 de

Peter, BCG thanks for the info. Just received this msg too. Have no NAV installed but lucky me that i'm not using any of Microsoft' mailing programs. Still using Netscape 3.0!!! for mail and it has never brought me any virusses, worms, trojans or whatever. I just deleted the msg and that's it. I checked for the regkeys and/or files that were mentioned on the Symantec page but NADA. So if any of you using Netscape 3 for mail and might receive the msg......just delete it....Seems that this oldy from Netscape is doing a better job as the new Microsoft' mail programs hahaha. 73 Ray...BTW wonder when propagation will come back here :-(

Just to add to the "confusion" Dave, not sure if anyone is going to try and use the train to get to Crewe on Friday evening, but North Western trains are on a one day strike. No trains (or very few and not to time table) will be running Friday in NW England. Saturday should be fine.

There still appears to be a little confusion regarding the RSGB 50MHz to Microwaves Convention being held on Saturday 6 April. If you booked with RSGB for accomodation and DX Dinner (either via web site or telephone) before 1 April 2002 then you shouldn't have any problems. People who turn up at the college on Friday or Saturday without confirmation of payment (you get an invoice from RSGB) or not appearing on the organisers master list will NOT be able to get a room or attend the DX Dinner. Sorry - the bookings have closed and final arrangements completed by the college. However you CAN pay at the door for DAY ENTRANCE on Saturday for the RSGB/UKSMG event. Whilst at a meeting there finalisng arrangements I took time out to find the nearest Hotel (for those who didnt book in time). THE RED LION Hotel is about 400 yards away from the college. B&B Single = £25/night. 01270 625 424. There are other hotels in Nantwich but this is the nearest. Anyone turning up late on Friday evening can get room keys from myself. Contact details will be posted around site. (I'm in the Bar!). Lets hope we have a great weekend for all VHF,UHF, SHF DXers. 73 David

de N6XQ/CP6...Hola...We are presently in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. We leave for Lima on Friday. I presently have the 706 hooked up in the hotel with a Zepp antenna on 6. I called Luis, CP6EB, on the phone and then made a contact on 6 with him. Luis was my first CP on 6 and I was his first 6 meter QSO ever. Luis is running an FT620 into an 80 meter dipole. Luis is having some health problems, so I wouldn't expect him to show up on 6 often.......Thanks to all who worked me. The tally so far is 312 QSO's in 42 countries. I am quite hapy with the results as it is normally difficult to get out operating so close to the magnetic equator. These results compare to 300 QSO's in 20 countries from CP1 in 1999. We worked 32 in Europe, 130 W's in all areas except 3,8, and 9. 10 were worked in Okinawa......Some of the more exotic calls worked were OD5, XR0X, CE0Z, JY9, 5B4 and a nice long path contact with VU2LO at midnight my local time......Noteworthy is that all or most of the Europe contacts were a skew path between 100 and 120 degrees. All but 1 of the W6 contacts I was pointing 220 degrees. I was pointing about 230 degrees for Okinawa. .........I wish I had worked everyone, but the propagation gods had other plans. I had fun and will recover from the mucho mosquito bites. Hopefully a CP will be on with a good station next cycle. 73 Jack

Hi Claude and all Canadians I didn't really mean to offend you. I also get problems here with people from the US, French or even Portuguese from the big towns. Hey Claude to be true I don't really need to call you, there are plenty of HAMs in Quebec, I will ofcourse reply your call if I will be in DX'pedition somewhere what might happen, I have to be tolerant with your hot-blooded reply. I don't blame Chris if he wants to erase this from the list, he is right ! (any future flames direct to my e-mail). Hi Mike, I did some testing with a telescopic tower going from 9-20 mtr (I guess even the canadians have adopted the metric system hi...). Running 300 W to a 6 el on 8 mtr boom I found a considerable decrease in RFI (neighbor 150 mtr. away) going from 14 to 20 mtr antenna height. What happens above 20 mtr? -Well I didn't have an extension for the tower, but no doubt it pays.

Hi All, This Question pertains more to 6 Meters and TVI than anything, but I am looking for replies from the HF crowd too! Scenario: I am moving later this year (hopefully) and trying to find a house on ~1-3 acres of land. I wish to put up a long 6m yagi on a tower. Question: =========================================== Will I really gain anything (as far as RFI to neighbors goes, not propagation-wise) by putting my antenna @ 100' as conpared to 50' ? =========================================== Again, this question doesn't refer how well the antenna will work for Es, F2 etc, but what kind of extra isolation will I get from mounting it twice as high (so I don't get into the local TV's on Chan 4/9/12) I will have HF beams up too, but this doesn't "seem" to be as much of a problem. (or am I just lucky?) I can run 1.5kW all weekend long here to a TH6DXX @ 46' and never have I ever heard a complaint. It only seems to be when I get on 6 meters (even running 50w) do I get into everyones phones, VCR's, TV's, baby monitors, toasters etc. Thanks, Mike VE9AA

David: Nobody has collected a list of people attending - we will have a list of people who have booked the dinner, but not until the day itself (and it's probably restricted under the D P act, having been collected by RSGB). THe dinner is for everyone. Anyone thinking of attending the dinner and/or staying overnight should book with RSGB today. 73 Peter

David - the convention is for allcomers, not just UKSMG members, hence the Dx'Dinner is open to all as well. There is no "master list" of attendees as yet - the booking has only just closed today. If i can weedle a list from RSGB HQ we'll find somewhere to post it...

Re 4U1ITU. There is a 100 watt 50 MHz rig available at the main 4U1ITU operating position and a TONNA 5 element. However there are reflections from everywhere - buildings, mountains etc. It's not the best 50 MHz location but OK on Es and F2. 73s

Long Path Alert: 3rd April is LP day here! 2/4/00 22:03 (actually the 3rd here) CT3HF via LP. 3/4/01 14:32 LU8MB via LP. Will be listening all this week: 2145-2245 slot for CU-CT3-EA8-D44 region. 1345-1445 slot listening for LU-PY-ZP-CX-CE and other SA. The next week or so is probably our last window of opportunity to work these difficult paths from Southern VK4/VK2 for the next 10 years(?) The LU8 window last year was barely 10 minutes - so be alert and look for us! 73,
