Small update from Mike, added 2 QSO's to the log>>>Hi Ray, Hope you enjoyed the football and caught some DX! I've had some interesting "TEP" recently, and worked 5N and TR, and heard some real TEP sigs, though v weak, from LU on 27th and ZS6WB on 28th. Hal was 42 at best. 7Q7SIX is quite a regular, 1800-2200 UTC most nights. 5N0NHD was working quite a pile into Eu, none of which were audible with me. I'm currently in IM43, and listening to .110 right now. I also missed the C98, might have heard him if I listened from EH8-land, but couldn't have worked him if I had. I have one more port call where I can't operate. The log this time includes heard as well as worked stations. Enjoy your holiday, and I'll probably be in the Netherlands before you're back. Hopefully I will stay on in Rotterdam for a while, although my plans are obviously wide open right now, so maybe we'll be able to get together for the beer I owe you? 73 Mike GU6AJE/mm

REF: Jose CT1EEB, Jose depends on your location, I used a Microwave Modules design which was fed direct @ the driven element & gave good s/n ratio but i live in the countryside so no electrical noise, this worked very well abt 4s points of gain & v little noise increase, BUT a v good freind of mine has tried all types of pre-amp & had no success at all!!!!! as he lives in the city of York there is much electrical noise & he also feeds his rx with LDF 4-50 so what gain he can get is swamped with electrical noise from all around!!!! so if you live in the countryside it maybe worth the investment! Re Six News: Pierre please!! Everyone is doing thier best. Post seems to have been disrupted over the last few weeks. I've forwarded all the names missing Six News to Iain who has many out, but Iain hashad to go to Washington so not all replacements have gone out. There is someone out there. This is an announcement board so why not send us a mail rather than posting a message? Some info from Mike, Hi Ray, Sorry there's been no news for a while, but nothing worked for a few days. We're currently in Las Palmas (EA8), so cannot operate anyway. Due to the current world situation, I will not be sailing in the Mediterranean as expected, and the next leg will be to return to the Netherlands, probably departing tomorrow, and taking a couple of weeks at most. I expect to activate a few wet ones on the way, using WSJT on .270 if nothing else is happening. 73 and hope to hear you on the way Mike GU6AJE/mm

The rig used is an Icom IC-706 with 100 watt wich gives my 2*5 element Yagi's more than 1 Kw. erp. This should be sufficient to reach stations within a range of, at least 600 Km even on flat ConDX. If You want to file a log showing Your efforts in the NAC there is an open class section. Point 1 point/km, bonus 500 point each WWL. The geomagnetic field is expected to be at major to severe storm levels beginning early on 26 September. The cme/flare event of earlier today is expected to spawn a strong disturbance expected to persist for 48 hours. (with an estimated CME-speed of 2220 km/s, it may actually just aswell arrive much earlier)

SOLAR FLARE: A powerful X-class solar flare erupted Monday morning, Sept 24th. The explosion hurled a spectacular coronal mass ejection (CME) into. space -- and it appears to be heading our way. The CME will likely sweep past Earth late Tuesday or (more likely) Wednesday and trigger geomagnetic storms. Sky watchers should prepare for Northern Lights during the nights ahead.

How to get in contact with ST2SA(E-mail or even phone number)?? I had a QSO with him in 1998 and after two direct QSL's, one in 1998 and one in 1999(with $$ and SASE both times), I still haven't receive it. Thank you for your advice.

Does anyone know Gianni, IK7UXY? He hasn't responded to my QSL request (with SAE & USD$) in 10 months and does not reply to e-mail (gianni.mariano@tiscalinet.it) I would like to get his card because it's the only 6M QSO I've had into JN90. In fact I've only ever worked two Italian stations so far and would like his card for VUCC. If anyone could directly pass this onto him I would appreciate it.

(9/18/01 @ 1300 hrs EDT)Many thanks to all for your support and prayers during this most difficult of times over here in NY. As a Firefighter & Ham, I feel like I'm getting double support. Just a bit of an update: The Rescue effort (Fire, PD, & EMS) has been put on a 4 day cycle of 24hrs on/24hrs off. Day 1 shifts commenced on 9/11 and the cycle still continues. My area in Rensselaer County (180 miles north of NYC) is on the Day 4 cycle...so far we have committed USAR(Urban Search and Rescue) and EMS to NYC. Fire personnel have staged in Newburgh NY..just North of NYC. As of last night, we (Fire Service) in Rensselaer County, have been told that we may move up next week according to the 4 day cycle. Again, many heartfelt thanks to all. (Chris N2NEH/East Greenbush Fire Department Asst. Chief)

Just an observation to those like me who often take rigs in hand baggage. After my experience last Friday between Bucharest and Dublin it may be adviseable to place any item with sharp edges in checked baggage. I had to repack my luggage in the London Gatwick south terminal whilst in transit. However transit doesn't really apply at present since you appear not to be able to check baggage through to the final destination, at least when travelling through the UK. Information is not too readily available at present so I would advise anyone contemplating travelling with equipment to check the situation for all points in their journey and allow a lot of time. 73s Dave

News from Tim, V73AT re K3J: Last night Dan, K3J showed up calling CQ on 50.110 at about 9:30 GMT. I worked him, he was about 40 dB over S9 hear. After our QSO he continued to call CQ with several VK4, VK8, and KH6 stations calling him. He didn't hear any of them. Thats when I called him back and informed him that others were calling. To make a long story short, Dan had S7 noise for a local FM radio station near their operating position. He found that he had to move all the way up to 50.6 before he could get away from the high noise level... he might show up on 110 but not be able to hear well.

With all this talk about propagation likely to NW VK6, don't forget to keep an ear out for VK6RSX beacon on 50.304 MHz. It runs 50W omni and is located in Karratha the former QTH of VK6PA, who is sadly no longer active. Also unfrtunately the only active 6mx op roughly north of geraldton is Bill VK6JQ in Broome who sports 100W CW these days.

Hi fellows, I'm sorry to tell you that the operation of IW2LLA from 3V8SM on 50 MHz in July/Aug. 2001 was illegal. There is no regular license for any of the 3v8 stations. The only legal operation was TS7N last year in November. (see http://www.qsl.net/ts7n) The ARRL will not accept cards from any other station for DXCC. If you like, I can send a scanned copy of the original license. You have to wait for another operation of our group in March/April 2002.

Stewart: As history tends to repeat, last year was very good on 1/10/00, 15/10/00 & 25/10-5/11 into Far Nth Queensland. Bear in mind though VK is rather large! FNQ (with operators in Cairns & Townsville regions) is 1100-1500km NNW of Brisbane, the capital of VK4. That's about London - Vienna... with how many countries in between? So when somebody says they've worked a VK4 keep that in mind! For those over there that have worked a VK6... well those stations on the N/W Shelf are about 3000-4000km from 95% of the population. You have a long way to go to work the rest of us in S/E Australia. Size does matter!!! Good luck.

Re WA3SIX: One great contribution that has helped so many. Thanks for your efforts Mark! Unfortunately as great as this page was- history repeated itself. Personal insults and lack of personal dignity seem to be where all of these pages wind up and for me it is the end of postings anywhere. Do others see your posts and become jealous? I just don't get it. Look around at some of the other pages and you find information scattered all over the universe as our egos drive us back into the dark ages. A recent incident of a fellow VHFer refusing a contact for a new state & grid on WSJT drives the message home loud and clear. I'll keep my license and try to have fun but I think this hobby has degenerated into a sad and sorry state of affairs. Good DX all...

I spoke with Jose, EH7KW a few days ago and he said the ZD8 beacon had disappeared as well. This in ominous news as looks like changing the antenna has put the beacon off the air. It seems a recent visitor to the island said that the beacon was audable @ s3 but it was end-stop when I was on the island. Does this mean that there has been an SWR problem and the PA has blown? Unfortunately, I'll only be on the island for a short stop-over on the way to the Falklands next month. I've sent as mail to Johnny, ZD8KW... Chris

WA3SIX site - sad loss - a great site which developed rapidly - became a tall poppy and ..... All we are left with now is the 50Mhz bitching logger - thicker skined but less effective. Mark. Thanks for giving us a brief glimpse of what things could have been like. 73

It sux big time that the WA3SIX site has been shut down. I am mostly saddend though by the fact that Mark has given up his callsign and has departed the Ham Radio community. Here is a person who only wished to contribute to this great hobby and to take little back. Well he has been put off so bad that he is not giving up just one band but the whole hobby. Thanks Mark for your time invested into your site I am saddend by its closure but can sympathize with you. I hope you change your mind and give radio a chance in the future though I know it is doubtful. Those who never used his site should bite their tongue about this matter as having not used the resource how do you know how good/bad it was? 73's and CU all of a sudden, maybe

Why would we miss openings just because some duplicated site which hosted medical and social issues has closed down? What is wrong with this method of posting dx spots etc?? Sorry about the moan, I will confine myself to 6m things in future (mostly).

I have now booked my flight to the Falkland Islands. I leave on the 21st October and return on the 6th November giving me two solid weeks in Stanley. I have a little work to do, but I will be concentrating more on the radio than I did on the last visit you will be pleased to hear! I'll be taking the 500 watt amplifier with me as I did to ZD8 so fingers crossed for F2! Of course I'll be looking for northerly latitude and long path QSOs. I HOPE I don't have to back out at the last minute this time around! Chris

The WA3SIX page has been shut down,we have lost a great DX resource. It would appear that Mark has been driven off the radio and that people having a bitch at each other has caused him to shut the site down. I personally do not have the ability nor the resources to create a site of that type otherwise I would gladly host it. One thing is for sure, it needs to replaced and before October is upon us or we may miss some openings. Regards

Ian, M0BCG you are a lucky man to totally cure the hash from your vehicle. As I pointed out in my earlier posting I have managed to reduce it vastly by using an aerial grounded at its base point but never had a complete cure. Always one or two sproggies getting up to no good! Some vehicles I have looked at over the years with similar problems to PMR/999 service transceivers have been total no hopers. I suggest manufacturers of vehicles get their acts together on this one, then again you are just as likely to work ZL on 2M sporadic E from the UK !!

info from Mike, GU6AJE/mm>>>>Hi Ray, I've had a couple of evenings in the same locator this time, with more "TEP" propagation. I know it's not really TEP, but that's what everypone seems to call it. Been good into the Med area both nights with typical fluttery signals, some at very good strength. It would be nice to see some Es extension into N Eu, but I'm quite happy to work anyone, really. Most QSOs are in the 4000km range, so it's not bad with just an inverted V dipole. Also heard TR8XX last night, not strong, but his pile up was! Also managed my 1st QSO to EH8 from the ship, and heard beacons I0JX/b and IK5ZUL. Most northerly QSOs were to EH1 and I2. Hope to be active again tonight, but not sure where yet! 73 and good dx hpe cu soon! Mike GU6AJE/mm

ref ic706mk2g in mobile . paul its youre choice of antenna mount i suspect , you do not have a positive earth connection to the vehicle body at the base of the whip/mount ,as you would in a gutter or stud type mount. the magmount has its physical earthing point extended to the vehicle chassis earth which is at the other end of the coax from the antenna.try a mount which has a physical connection to the vehicle body , that will cure it , strange things magnets !!GL 73 i use a 706mk2g in my car with a gutter/stud mount[comet chl-350 6/10m whip][ and i have no problems with hash etc, however i do get hash if i only have wire in the antenna socket and nothing in the earth side of the socket.

Paul, G4IJE this is a problem that usually comes from the vehicle engine management computer or other digital wot not found on a modern vehicle. Even with the ignition off they are active on some vehicles especially to immobilise it. There is usually nothing you can do about it. However a proper grounded aerial can reduce it. Just worth a mention did all Euro ops know that as of October 2002 only radio equipment/RF based technologies marked with the new "E" marking can be fitted to new vehicles to conform to the new EMC directives. Do not confuse this with "CE" marking. It applies to all 4 wheels or more vehicles without any exemptions (At least at present). If the clowns in Brussels wanted to do more harm to the communications industry in general then they could not have made a better start!

I have a bit of a “funny” with my IC706mkIIG: When using it in the car with a mag-mount antenna I get loads of “sproggies” and hash right across the 6 metre band. I get the same thing in two different vehicles and also when running on a portable (battery) power unit rather than using the vehicle’s power. It makes no difference whether the engine is running or not. There are no sproggies or hash on 2 metres with the same setup (it’s a dual-band antenna). I also get the same effect in different locations, even in the “middle of nowhere” where there is definitely no computer noise or similar sources of interference. I get a similar effect when I touch a small screwdriver into the antenna socket. TX is fine under the same mobile conditions. Its almost as if either the 6 metre front-end in the IC-706 is not unconditionally stable, and is “taking off” under certain load conditions, or is it possible that with an antenna close to the rig the receiver is picking up hash from the digital circuitry in the IC-706? Any ideas, observations or possible cures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just received a mail from Mike with the update till September 5th. Will update the log later on today but read his info for now if you like. Hi Ray, Found time to operate last night, and had conditions into Europe again, though contacts mostly Mediterranean area. Some very good sigs into IK20 (not completely wet, but still pretty rare I guess!) Heard some CW at 1835, so started to CQ and first call was from EH7GTF/p 59/59 and also worked IS0, IT9, EH1, 3 and 5, CT1, plus CN8LI, with 11 QSOs in total. Most frustrating was hearing GB3LER for about an hour with no GMs on the band! Later GB3RMK also heard - nothing else from G, not even GB3MCB this time, hi. At 1916 UTC hrd M0HEN/mm beacon on .160, but no QSO. Would have been nice to make another /mm to /mm QSO. Other beacons heard were CU3URA/b, CN8LI/b, CT0SIX, and later at 2220 UTC, PP1CZ and PY0FF. No PY QSOs again :o( Conditions to Europe faded around 2020 UTC. Best DX IT9RZR. I'm not sure if I'll be QRV again tonight, but will try. I guess the time for Eu stations to listen will be 1830 to 2030UTC. Will be around .110 +/- QRM or .115. Can't say which way we're going right now, but it's raining pretty heavily most of the time. 73 for now hope we make it soon, Mike GU6AJE/mm IK20

Adam and Chris thanks for your postings re rain static problems. All interesting stuff. It is worth remembering that even a few Ohms of resistance will create a potential difference across a joint and seeing as receivers are dealing with micro volts it is no suprise that we can hear ststic crashes as the rain drops fall. I recall working on vehicle tracking systems which used LF to receive the positioning stations. We had to ensure that no greater than 0.3 Ohms existed between aerial ground, equipment ground and actual vehicle ground or else the system simply fell over due to static noise from the vehicle electrics and that of passing vehicles. Using a good digital meter it is worh checking all "grounded" joints just in case there are a few of those littlel resistive critters called Ohms living on your aluminium farm!

Hi gang, Heard 48.25 video (supposed to be from EU) by LP this morning 1st time this season. 45 ZL video S9++ during the propagation. Good sign to expect seasonal F2 propagation due to returned SF:199. 73,

Rain static on yagis - the type of matching used seems to be the key point - my experience with HF yagis gave some surprising results - for example my HyGain 5ele 20m yagi with a hairpin match and insulated driven element is badly affected by rain static, whereas my Cushcraft 3 ele 20m yagi with a gamma match is not affected by rain static - this is exactly the opposite of what I expected, because the hairpin match is a DC ground. 73

Funny propagation yesterday evening. At 20.30 we had S5 Aurora signals from YU, LZ and SP. QTF was between 60 and 90 degrees. But there was no geomagnetic activity! My guess is that we had fast moving Es clouds (bulbs) as Es propagation was moving all the time between YU, I and EA. This does introduce Doppler as well and is the reason we have those typical aurora sound. Sure, interesting it was! A typical magic band phenomenal! 73's

John G0JJL: Interesting. I have a JHV and since new has always been susceptable to rain static. During assembly I used "Penetrox" aluminium jointing compound to ensure a good electrical connection from boom to element mounting block. Very dissapointing, considering my other 7 element yagi with insulated elements so virtually no signs of rain static at all. I find that quickly swinging the JHV from side to side during rain will temporarily minimize the QRM. ???

ZB0AA Beacon: Extract from e-mail: Hi Peter, I am very pleased with your report of my 6m Beacon, it is the first I have received, it has only been running for about 3 weeks on a trial basis. Hopefully it will remain permanent, however, as I will be going for a two-week holiday on the 12th (Sept) I'm afraid that I shall have to shut it down for that period. Below is the info which I hope will be of interest to you. The equipment is installed in my third floor flat, with the antenna on top of another three floors above me. 9M8, V85 & YC1 operations on 50MHz for September 2001 by VK2GJH have been cancelled as I will be having an "amateur radio free" holiday with my small daughter. 4U1ITU Report - 50 MHz 28 - 31 August 2001 During about 10 hours of operating 47, 50 MHz QSOs were completed including 3 MS QSOs with G, GW and ON4. Countries worked were 5B4, CT, EA, F, G, GM, GW, HB9, I, LZ, ON and OY. 41 different stations were worked using CW or SSB. A few points: 1. Antenna directions were difficult to compute due to a faulty/out of alignment direction indicator as well as multiple reflections from buildings and/or mountains 2. There is no packet cluster facility currently operational at 4U1ITU 3. I did not have time to read Email at an Internet Café! 4. Until the afternoon of 31 August, CW was sent by finger taping one side of a Bencher paddle - hence the slower than usual CW and 5. MS QSOs took longer than necessary due to QRM from stations calling during the QSO; due to lack of reflections QSOs took about 40 Minutes. I had 4 Es events 1 to GM and OY, 2 to EA/CT and 1 to LZ/5B. I tried to maximise QSOs by working Es when Es were there, rather than look for scatter paths! The rig was a Yaesu TX/RX (24, 28 and 50 MHz) with about 80 watts to a 5 element Tonna. The activity took place during a business trip; operational hours were therefore limited. I also had to eat! As to the future, there is only 1 active IARC member on the ITU staff; he does a great job but he cannot spend all his spare time (not much) on 4U1ITU business, he has a family! For operational reasons (ITU requirements) it is now quite difficult to obtain unsupervised access to 4U1ITU outside working hours. It is after all the HQ of a UN Agency. Nevertheless, I shall try to plan a long (4 day) weekend at 4U1ITU perhaps with 2 operators during the 2002 or 2003 sporadic E season June/July. I also need to work the country somehow myself! QSL information. A 100% QSL policy is operated by 4U1ITU, albeit a little slow due to the volume of cards. Bureau or via IARC, PO Box 6, CH-1211 Geneva is acceptable. For 50 MHz QSOs made during my trip, I have already prepared cards for all 6 metre QSOs completed. For a period of 3 months they can be obtained from EI3IO (address info on http://EI3IO.com ) . After 3 months I will send them to the bureau. 73s to all Dave EI3IO

Home brewers of beams and assemblers of commercial ones should be aware of products that will reduce/eliminate oxidation between similar & disimilar metals. Locally available is Aluminox which is a graphite rich grease designed for switch boards with mixed metals. I'm sure there will be similar products available everywhere. Have used same on beams and on boats masts and cross beams for years and it's a winner. Happy antenna building
