Just in case any UK ops are thinking of getting OnDigital TV decoders I have tonight had the chance to test one of the Pioneer DBR T210GBP boxes. With my usual 100 Watts test with the 6M prong about 4 ft from the TV aerial the picture freezes up and then goes altogether until you stop transmitting with ssb or cw ! Out of interest I have previously tested both Pace and Nokia decoders. The Nokia had picture freeze but the picture remained. The Pace was 100% clear !! I am told that a G4 licensee designed the Pace box! The Nokia and the Pioneer were both cured with a simple high pass filter. I think that the receivers in these two machines simply "block" when in a strong RF field even though it is some 600MHz away from the wanted TV signals suggesting filtering is not present internally. If it was a spot frequency harmonic of the transmitter then digital TV simply ignores it to a greater extent and works around it. Hope this info is of interest to some of you. Please note this is terrestrial digital TV not digital satellite (Sky)

WOW! What a great day on six! Lot's of ES around and couldn't believe my ears when I finally heard W1JJM on CW. But sigs much into the noise so no chance at all. Later on he together with K1TOL came upto 529/539 and after about a thousand ;) calls I finally got them. Very difficult to get through the G/ON/PA pileups as I further need another hop to get into the show. Later the band was absolutely quiet again. While tuning the band I came across Bob, VE1YX, who's been the only signal on the whole band. Just one call to catch him ... uff! Didn't even expect to get an answer, hi. 'YX was upto 57 at best with no takers at times. So seems to be another "at the right place at the right time". ;) Have made recordings of his signal ... BTW: Heard about 10 other NA stations on sideband but no chance at noise levels to make me heard. :( CW would have been easier. On the other hand they had S9 sigs from G/ON/PA so SSB is for sure more efficient then. Anyway, once again looking for more to come ... 73, Olli - DH8BQA - JO73CF - German-Polish border

Re T77GO: Many thanks! This was truely one of those MAGIC moments that only 6m can bring. While in QSO with an "I" station in JN63 I asked "Are there any T7s around". The reply "Stand by". After about less than one minute - back comes T77GO for #140. Too bad you don't have a video of me falling out of my chair :-). Also worked T72EB/A. Now you know why I have a suffix of 'SIX in my call. 6m IS MAGIC! 73 es Gud DX...

Hi all, Big SA opening last night, discovered it when checking beacons around 1830: CU3 and CN8 beacons together - good sign. Then CX1CCC/b at 519, plus lots of backscatter from G & GW. Wked LU9APM 18.55, GW4VEQ and G3VYF on backscatter around 1920, then CX1CCC 1934 and CX4AAJ 2005. Lots more heard but even more Eu stations!! Huge pileups. Only new square was IO73, tnx to GW4VEQ. Ones that got away incl. GG52, GF07, FF76, FF57, FF96. Some incredible signals, PP5JD 59 +20 (pity about the pile up....) 73, hope for more tonight!

Adrian - computer logging - although no-one likes to even think about DOS in the year 2001, K1EA's CT is still a solid piece of software, if you get the right version (not necessarily the latest version!) We've used CT at GM7V since 1992 with relatively few problems. It's very simple to learn to use, and will automatically back-up logs every 60 mins. to a floppy if necessary. NA and TR (TR soon joining up with LogWindows) are also good. Running a big CW pile-up with CT is a breeze. Sorry to hear about SV1AB, also my first ever SV QSO. 73

GEORGE SV1AB SILENT KEY: It is our sad duty to announce the death of George SV1AB in late May to the amateur radio and especially the VHF community. George was born and raised in France where he obtained his first call F9QN. During the 50’s he moved to Athens and soon became the well known "SV1 Ali-Baba". Founding member, president and member of council of the Radio Amateur Association of Greece for many years promoted all aspects of Amateur radio and specially VHF-UHF and repeaters. His real passion was VHF-UHF. His pioneer work on satellite monitoring was recognized by NASA and his devotion and contribution in exploiting TEP propagation on 144MHz together with SV1DH, ZE2JV and ZS6PW (SK) was internationally cited and honored. George was the first who made moonbounce tests from SV in the 60’s using an eight yagi system designed by his good friend F9FT. Being a keen CW operator, he was also active in 144MHz meteor scatter and latter he started experimenting in 432/1296 MHz tropo propagation. He was among the first team that obtained a 50MHz license in Greece and he was very active until his condition did not permitted him to do so. His many and devoted friends, all over the world, will miss him much as we do.

Logging: I always run a minidisk recorder here for "evidence". I used it on my last trip to H44 and the hours of JA pile-ups on tape have proved a great source of absolute log checking when a card is received. My trip was the first time I had used a direct entry PC log on a DXpedition so I wanted to be sure. (Actually VQLOG worked flawlessly) 73

With the help from Mark, WA3SIX(ex kb3cws) and Tim, N1RZ I have revamped parts of the VE9MS/B lineup. Since this is a 6m page, I'll just say that VE9MS/B 50.065.5MHz FSK is (for the time being anyway) running 100w to a Ringo (used to run only a watt before) "de ve9ms/b ve9ms/b fn65 k" 20wpm CW. There is a little AC growl on the carrier and sometimes the CW isn't shifting much (seems to change every few hours), but if the amp doesn't give out or I don't receive any RFI complaints, this should give EU (and USA) one more prop indicator for Transatlantic Propagation. It's been a few years since I've had it running QRO. Last July it was copied widely in the UK at just 1 watt! 73 all and pse send reports via Email only (or spot the darn thing on the cluster if heard pse!!) 73 de Mike Smith VE9AA/VE9MS

Guantanamo Bay. Pat Rose, W5OZI, and Dale Richardson, AA5XE, will operate from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (FK29, NA015) during the period 29 June to 5 July, 2001. Area clearance has been granted and callsigns will be announced later. Operation will be primarily on SIX meters with possible activity on HF. Proposed frequencies will be 50.102 MHz for CW/SSB, QSX 50.115 or operators instructions if pileups are large. There will be a breakable beacon on 50.102 MHz and the operators will man the station to the maximum extent possible. Equipment will be an Icom IC-706MKIIG and a Kenwood TS-60, both running 100 watts to an 8 element yagi. QSL to home calls, SASE or SAE plus 1 IRC please. This is a bare bones trip and we will not have computer logging or logs on the internet. We hope to put as many stations in the log as possible. Dupes are OK. Full calls ONLY! We do NOT care about your grid, just call and signal report. We will make an effort to work Europe, Africa, N. and S. America. Questions can be submitted to W5OZI, w5ozi@ktc.com or AA5XE, aa5xe@ktc.com

Hello all: REF HC8N. Thanks Jon for information. Regardless, if you make contacts on non-HF band, you still got to be careful with logging. Not far to rules of fair play with DXCC, etc. I have sent e-mail to AA5BT and N5KO requesting their assistance. Not fair to count some Six Meter contacts and not count valid QSOs by respectable operators! BY THE WAY, I always do hand logging on any DX trip and will save notes also!!!!! 73 KEN WB2AMU

I just got back from operating at HC8N in WPX CW. Only 3 6M QSOs while there...TI5KD 5-24 on m/s and LW3EX + LU2DEK May 25 on F2. No Es to USA or EU. I donated the 6M7JHV yagi and HC8GR/b antenna in 1999 to the HC8N station and have tried to encourage 6M activity by the ops visiting there. Please realize that the priority for HC8N is HF contesting, not 6M! The HC8N guest ops do their best to help out on 6M as time allows.

ref hc8n and logs . what about TS7N then , didnt have me in the log, yet i worked them , i hear it was a rather common problem too . maybe expeds need someone who can write properly as well as use computers. paper logs dont crash or suffer keying errors , they just get wet or torn hi hi .everything seems to rely on the operator putting you in the log , and not whether you actually make contact with them or not, i bet youd not get missed out in a contest log !!!!

RE: HC8N. This is not a mickey mouse operation, but a big multi-multi contest station (see www.kkn.net/~hc8n/). Nevertheless, I totally agree on the logging accuracy issue. On 6m you get probably only a once in your lifetime chance to work HC8. So messing up the log on 6m is an unforgiveble mistake. I suggest to contact N5KO, Trey Garlough (trey@kkn.net), one of the station owners and make him aware of this issue and kindly ask him on how to proceed. Good luck (sorry to say, but am I glad I have got my card ...)

That's bad luck Ken. What sort of mickey mouse operation was HC8N anyway? By virtue of the fact that they admitted others have requested QSLs for QSOs around the same time means you must be fair dinkum. IMO they should have issued your QSL & said nothing about their logging incompetance. Only those who considered they had valid QSO would have sent a card in for a return and none (the shocks) would have been the wiser. Agree abt having a seasoned 6M op on these trips. Our street savvy 6M op on VK9ML Mellish Reef (VK4APG) kept a hand written log and only some were logged in CT (yuk!) in real-time. Hand logged QSOs were added later... ok, doesn't appear on the on-line log 24 hours later, but at least the QSOs will be in the final log once all the housekeeping is done back home. (CT doesn't allow retrospective entries - and we certainly won't be using it for the return trip to Mellish, next year!) Hope you do get to work it again! 73 (VK9ML Pilot)

RE: HC8N QSL. Yesterday, I received my QSL returned to me for HC8N QSO from November 2000 with note stating, "Sorry, a QSO for which you requested a QSL card is not in the HC8N log. It's probably not your fault, though, as I have received other cards for QSOs around this time and they are not in the log either. Apparently, some of the visiting ops at HC8N did not properly merge their logs with the main station log, so their are a few gaps...........Be assured that HC8N will be on the air many times in the future and you should have many opportunities to make another QSO." Several issues come up with this. How often have operators discussed here about making multiple QSOs on the same band with a DX station. Also, the QSL manager is not aware that HC8N on Six Meters is not necessarily a sure thing! Finally (as mentioned in my article in the June issue of CQ), this points out the need for serious Six Meter operators to be on these expeditions (instead of those not experienced on the band). The serious Six Meter operator would have probably kept a hand log and made the effort to "merge" the logs properly. I suspect some others here got burned too!!!!! 73 KEN WB2AMU

Spots: Data is data - you cannot possibly have too much. Then you use filters and analysis to produce theroies and predictions. However "nothing here" and "calling now" spots are NOISE and just mask or corrupt data. Nobody likes noise. Hope I've not created too much recently! 73

Recent exchanges illustrate exactly the problem re DX Cluster spots - one man's unnecessary noise is the next man's propagation warning. Fortunately, the cluster network is heading in the right direction here - high-capacity backbones which can carry as much traffic as you care to throw at them, with increasingly sophisticated filter mechanisms at the leaf nodes which keep the last-hop traffic from your local node to you (which is usually over a contended RF channel) to a minimum.

I just bought my third (!) IC-736 (well 2 times the very same one and one with the next serial number!). Being a masochist, I plan to install the International Radio (fox-tango) SSB 2.1KHz filters #110 & #314. Does anyone have relevant experience as installation instructions in hand does not cover this radio? Any idea of how to keep both old and new filters and switch between them like the CW ones is also welcomed.

Is there a way when setting the filters in DXspider/clx clusters to filter out spots between certain DXCC. eg: I dont want to see any G,SP,EH,DL spotting I,F,HB9 etc and visa versa on 6m, but I'd like to see their spots for outside Europe!? Anyone feel the cluster is grinding to a halt at certain times due to total indiscriminate use during the Sporadic E season? Of course there's always a place for the spot, indicating a short distance QSO, a rare grid, or less active country in Europe, but the 1000-1900km spots, where there are 50 stations in each grid, between high 6m populations (about 75% of the spots) seem pointless to me.

Received Cards from UK9AA and A45XR. Also received some IRCs from Italy either not hand stamped or stamped on the Right Hand Side. ITALIANS: Please note that in most countries the Post Office will not take these. A GreenStamp (US dollar bill) is probably cheaper for you and still usually worth enough for return postage.

If you're lucky enough to be on a DXspider cluster try these filters; accept/spots on 6m and (by_zone 14,15,16 or call_zone 14,15,16) - only gets spots with one of the 2 calls in Eu (better than nodxdedx). Even more interesting try accept/spots on 6m and ((by_zone 14,15,16 and not call_zone 14,15,16) or (call_zone 14,15,16 and not by_zone 14,15,16)) - Only accepts spots wher one end is in Eu and the other is not ie Intercontinental. This shows possibilities for a real alerting system which you can leave to wake you up for real DX and not a little local propagation.

I was very encouraged by OH3NWQ's reception of my sigs around 1845Z yesterday. From about 1815 to 1900Z I had several Scandinavian videos including 48248.7, 48256.4, and 48260.4 ,S1 - S5. All had very rapid Polar/Au flutter. 48248.7 (KP59) was strongest. I have had this path many times around 1800Z, so LA/SM/OH please keep and ear out this way. I think there was some Aurora around this time in N. Europe, maybe it was Es to AuE link. When condx look good I am usually around 50.092 - .096 CW w/1500 watts. Regards.

Just a final reminder about my trip to Mull, IO66. I plan to be QRV as GM4IJE/P on 6 metres from late afternoon on June 2 to early evening on June 8, running 100 watts to a 5 element tonna. Most operating will be during the evenings although other times are possible. QSLs will be sent via the BURO; please do NOT send cards direct as my address is NOT correct in any callbook or database. I would still like to hear from someone I could telephone to post an announcement for me. This would be mainly to announce a period of MS operation at short notice, something I’d like to do if the Es dries up. RE:G0KZG/MM: We had this discussion here before concerning a certain ZD7 station working G's only. In my case I hrd Andy over 45 minutes with a 59+ signal but I wasn't allowed to call him because he was working by countries. Just before I got home (from my parents 31st weddingday) he had finished working PA's. On six nothing is more frustrating if you hear a new field or dxcc and you can't work him. This all have to do with the way the operator is handling his pile up. On six it's better to work split than to work by numbers or by DXCC entity. I uploaded a recording to http://www.qsl.net/pa4pa/ra/g0kzg_mm.rm so you can all listen how i hrd Andy. Andy next time just work split and give everyone a fair chance of working you. If you still want to do it your way, well don't be surprised but you'll keep seeing those comments as propagation on six is not the same as on HF! 73 Ray

Andy, G0KZG, I can imagine your disappointment when reading some of the cluster comments concerning your operation on six. I'am sure this comments come from a small minority reflecting their own incapability of making a QSO in a decent way. I'am sure that for every one of them there are a lot of others happy with a new square. Don't let this little group spoil your fun on six, Andy.

I f you are looking for Mohamad, HZ1MD, take a careful look at 50123, maybe even give him a call there. I suggested yesterday it was a frequency not so likely to be occupied, and he will I think try it for a while. Mohamad works only SSB and has 100W and a wire antenna.

Fishing for reaction Peter, Jan?? The issues that divide VK amateurs are about ethics and operating behaviour, as are the same issues dividing amateurs over your way in case you haven't noticed, and as for dividing VK in seperate countries, we were back in 1901 when we Federated. As for working DXCC from VK6, one could easily from up North of Perth, but we all have to live and have a social life, most serious active long distance 6M ops have long gone to better bands, something that many of the excessive compulsive 6m types overlook. Their only social life is picking on someone who is ahead of them on the who's who in what list. Since I dropped 6M listening from my daily routine I have never had so much peace and quiet...and I guess many will agree the same goes for them, but I see they've found other hapless individuals to pick on... adios see you in 11 years if we are alive..

Andy, G0KZG/MM, There will always be small minded idiots, wherever you go or whatever you do, Ignore the small minority and go with the Majority, they need u and the squares not the other way round.. keep up the 6m work, at the end of the day, you have a job to do and an income to earn, that must always come first (although not all the time) :-) Ade

I have just flown home from Mauritius on completion of my last tour of duty on my ship, and I am extremely dissapointed at some of the adverse comments concerning my 6m operation from the ship from March to May 19th. The majority of the authors of these comments are totally ignorant of my operating circumstances and conditions. I operate my amateur radio gear on board ship as a hobby only, in my spare time. I am not a dxpedition, and have no influence on where the ship happens to be during my periods of operation! If you can hear my, but I don't answer you, then it is because the hundreds of stations to the south of you put a stronger signal in to my receiver than you do! My QSL rate is a max of about 2 stations per minute! I cannot write the details faster than this, and I don't, at present, have the luxury of hands free operation, to allow me to type the QSO details direct into my computer. Operation at times is a constant juggling act between operating the fist mic, writing the log, turning the rotator as the ship manoevres, and holding onto the desk if it is rough! This QSL rate falls as the number of stations calling increases, as it becomes physically impossible to work out individual callsigns out of the S9 of noise generated! This is the same whether I use 2m, 6m, and even hf! I have a job of work to do on the ship, which is the purpose of me being there. Work takes priority over Amateur Radio operation, and even during my off duty periods, can cause me to go QRT at short notice. This has always been the case, since I commenced /MM operations - over 15 years ago. I will continue to operate on 6m as and when I can. You may not think much of my operation - but from where my ship operates I am all you have got! There is an old saying that comes to mind - "Don't bite the hand that feeds you"! Constructive comments and suggestions I welcome - offensive comments are not worth replying to!

Confirming my 6m Dx'pedition to VP9, dates are 14th July to 22nd July, I will be taking 2 HF/6m Radios, 100 Watts, to a 5 element, Visitors to VP9 are only allowed 100 Watts, call will be G0KOM/VP9, This is totally self funded, much to my Xyl's disgust, the 6m Radio will be left on all the time, I will have an R6000 Vertical for HF, for hopefully the odd occasion that 6m isnt open, hoping for some EU openings, keep fingers crossed, thing that ther are a lot of Europeans who still need VP9,,, Adrian

Dear SIX friends. Nice opening today. It's not easy knows when the band will open, but today I enjoyed a very good experience on 6m and I tested my new 8 el.@12m boom antena. I've worked 17 countries, but 8 new countries for me. The most difficult contact was my friend Peter - PA2VST. Very loud here, on the middle of QRM, but workable. So, regards for all SIX OP and let's try again this weekend. 73's and good openings on 6m. PY2LED-Fernando in GG66rj

Nice day today. Even the weather is good...Worked VE, K and later on in the evening suddenly PY2LED GG66. He was very weak and nearly destroyed by G1YLE. It took me 10 minutes to complete the QSO. Can some of our polite and charming fellow hams in the UK try to confince G1YLE that sometimes HIS frequency can be occupied by someone else in an other part of the world? Gladly PY2LED keep on calling me so I was able to get the report out of it for a complete one. Heard but not worked PP1CZ, PY5CC and LU7DZ. 73,

Reading the sad stories from our VK 6M hams during the past years. Complaining that completing DXCC is extreme difficult in VK. Some hams listen day in day out never hearing anything exiting..I heard of one extreme case of one ham that was found dead one year unnoticed! behind his rig ! Whilst overhere in Europe if you would give a trucker a 6meter rig for a change. He could allmost complete DXCC in one year. And he does not even have to stop working.. The only sollution to this problem I see is: DEVIDE Australia into many different counties! There you go. It can be so simple sometimes..

Another fine Es opening yesterday. The band was open when I got home and around 1400z and it lasted till 2100z. Worked 96 stations including I ,F, HB9, DL, LX, PA, ON, G, GW, GM & EI. If you want to have a QSO on a digital mode like PSK or Hell, please ask when you hear me. I am willing to break European pileup for digital qso. When the band is open you'll find me more likely above 50200. Most of my contacts yesterday were made at 50245 or 50266. 73 de Vesa OH3NWQ

GREEN? Dave, that's an understatement!!! Life is certainly different in Oceania. It can take a complete cycle to hear/work thirty countries, and of course there's no guarantee you can be in the shack just at the right time when it does open up (working for a living is a bugger!) Have fun over there!

I must congratulate Chris G3WOS on the excellent service this page gives to the 50MHz DX community, I certainly appreciate it and not afraid to say so! In past months I have had no problems at all with the site acessing it from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Kiribati during my travels. It hasn't once let me down, so this suggests the problems a minority of users are having is at their end and not related to the UKSMG site. That's my 10 pence worth!

Life on the Internet is never reliable as it is only a 'best effort' network that falls over on a regular basis. Routers get overloaded and packets get dropped all the time - I was monitoring a link last week and I was getting 10%+ packet loss in the BTnet network! If this happens then, well... 'Standard' small ISPs do not as a general issue cache in the network but many big ISPs and companies do, this is done to minimise repeat traffic e.g west US coast servers are 'mirrored' on the east coast to minimise what is known as 'transit traffic'. However, this is only done on MAJOR sites and with static objects. It is highly unlikly that the lowly UKSMG Announcement page ever gets cached! If you REALLY want to know what the performance is like between yourself and the UKSMG site, download http://www.pingplotter.com This will tell you the number hops between you and the site, the latency on each hop and the packet losson a real-time basis. You can set this to do real-time plots by pinging every minute or so. You'll be surprised by the results. If you want to discuss this issue further please do it by email not on the Announcement page please. Chris

VQ9IO may possibly have been heard today in VE9 and W1 around 1700Z for a few minutes off and on, via a scatter path a little more south than the normal heading. Is there any way to contact that station/op before tmw @ 1700Z to ask him to look for NA? Chris, yes I know this problem has been there for a while. It is NOT my end - tried different browsers (NScape & IE) different machines (laptop and home) different ISPs (FreeServe, Compuserve, EuroBell) - I still think it IS "out there" somewhere! So do others - just look at the multiple postings - they can't all be as dumb as me can they? Still a fantastic service though. 73 (now posting and waiting)

No there isn't Peter! Sorry but the page is just a perfectly normal HTML page. I access it from all over world with lots of different machines and browsers. And, I have no other complaints. And, it has been the same for nearly FIVE YEARS! You have had problems before if I remember rightly? The page does not 'push' to automatically update. I would check your cache update options in your browser. Of course, if you are using AOL then you can expect trouble as they seem to be non-compatible on everthing! Double postings come from those that do not have good connectivity and get impatient so they click twice. Chris

the 7X2 dx spot just has to a false one...same as the TF spot early this afternoon. Both PE9DS as PE7JD are not valid callsigns according to the dutch PTT list. Only when they have real new callsigns....some weeks only...these callsigns are given away. But as PE9DS said on the cluster....# 56 ...impossible in a couple of weeks. Dennis, i'm sure that what ever you say, there will be some stations that will be /p on the day. Not everyone will have found out about this rule. And this will no doubt be compounded by the different rule the RSGB is enforcing, i.e. no /p entries, but you can still work /p stations, as has already happened. IMHO not being allowed to work /p stations just in this one contest can only have a negative effect on contesting and the UKSMG.

All this Hoof and Gob (Foot & Mouth for non northern types)stuff and not allowing portables in the contest seems a bit daft! After all you must seek the permission of the landowner to use private land for portable operations. It is no good just parking up on Farmer Palmers land and setting up without asking first! Public access land is okay but if F&M restrictions are in place you should not be there in the first place, whether it is operating a radio, having a picnic, observing courting couples or stealing a few cows! or

UKSMG contest: Allowing the qso's with /p station in the UK but without points doesn't make sense to me. When the /p stations are told it's not allowed to work them it's just an extra stimulation to be NOT /p . And stations can only be penalized when the log shows UK/p qso's. See you all in the contest. 73
Dennis PA7FM <pa7fm@amsat.org>
- Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at 15:56:54 (GMT/BST)
Further to the F&M problem. I think it is safe to say that any group/society should not encourage /p contest operation, and thus the /p section of the contest has been removed. But what is unfair is to penalize fixed station contest groups who happen to be called by a /p UK station. Perhaps a better option would be to have the QSO, but without points. Imagine the following: G9AAA calls CQ contest, G9XXX/p replies with his callsign, G9AAA then replies "sorry G9XXX/p, due to F&M, i'm not allowed to work you, CQ contest" How anti amateur radio can you get!

UKSMG contest /P : It is not a subject that the /p operation in this years UKSMG summer contest should be banned. I've read some good arguments why some /p operations should be allowed. But, in order to be fair to all entrants we couldn't allow /P in some areas and not others. The rule is to avoid anyone intentionally or unintentionally contributing to the problem, and the best way to do that is remove the appropriate section of the contest. As the rules on the website do say there is a possibility to operate from an alternative permanent location without signing /p. And it doesn't take weeks to register a temporary address - it takes a fax or a letter to the local Radiocommunications Agency office, it's very easy. Anyone with a 'safe' alternative address should do this. So please don't try to find any reason why just you should to be able to sign /p in the UK during the contest. Think the rules are clear now. Hope to see a lot of contest entrees this year. 73 Dennis PA7FM UKSMG contestmanager

The adjudicating country for Iaru Reg I 50Mhz contest 2000 was 9A (Croatia). Two 9A oms operated from Malta as 9H3P. It is a great shame but the effort and sacrifice they made is most probably wasted as well. What a waste of time.

Hi Tony, Re the FAM situation here in the UK. It has not gone away. The reason why it seems to have abated recently is because it is old news and the impending general election here on the UK has caught the media. Until FAM is under control I personally feel that the UKSMG committee are correct in taking the action it has.. but that is just my view.

You have my sympathy on the /p issue but heres a quote from the rules "FOR THE AVODANCE OF DOUBT: "UK STATIONS" means any station operating within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man." My own feeling is that since the FMD scare has abated somewhat a re think on this rule might be in order given the strong feelings expressed. Regards Tony

A sudden thought occurs, GJ, GU & GD are not part of the UK (but we are part of GB) so we can operate /P. And as Andy stated foot & mouth hasn't reached our islands. A valid interpretation of the rules?

/P problems. I totally agree. I've operated the last 4 years either from my parent's or from the club QTH, neither are anywhere near a farm. So do I pre-register that I'm operating from that QTH with the RA and not sign /p? Do I have enough time I think they need several weeks for that. Do I operate illegally and not /p when I am, or is this just another excuse to penalise me yet further? Each year as a single op who operates from the club 'cos my QTH is so poor, and I'm classed with the multi-op QRO crowd. I think we should have single-op QRP/Low/High power and Multi-op. As for operating at home, noise measured here is -110dBm, receiver sensitivity -145dBm, so 35 dB of QRM here on a quiet day (that's s9 with the pre-amp on). C U in the test

/P Yes it is crazy, but it's easy to understand the over reaction. My plan of action -(part A) the local sixers have registered a very good site (with RA) for the club callsign so that we don't have to use /P. We will be in the contest. (Part B)I will call as many UKSMG and other contesters as I can hear using my normal call G8BCG/P [my only station as I don't work from home] Result - they get reduced scores, I get disqualified, WE win! Only joking honnest!!!

Quote: "/P" stations will be deleted from entrant's logs, and 10% of the final score will be deducted as a penalty. This has got to be a mistake?? What happens if i go /p and work a dozen or more stations... they'd loose lots of points, yet there isn't any foot&mouth in my country. And what about the likes of Peter, BCG/p ? What about my friend that calls in at my house and wants to work a few stations as well?? I think we all agree that a /p station entering a contest is a "no no" But this rule is a mistake. 73 de

I must say I’m disappointed by the extreme nature of the exclusion of UK /P stations from the UKSMG Sporadic E contest. Obviously nobody wants to risk spreading foot-and-mouth disease and it’s quite right to ban UK /P stations from entering the contest, but there must be many stations who would like to just “give away a few points” from a “safe” /P location, such as an alternative QTH, a holiday cottage or just a roadside high spot. Why go to the extreme measure of banning ALL contacts with UK /P stations and even threatening to expel such stations from the UKSMG? I’ll be travelling back from a holiday in GM during the contest and had hoped to find a suitable spot to operate from for an hour or two, but I guess I’ll have to keep moving and sign /M – which I assume is OK! Oh well, hopefully we’ll be back to normal next year. 73, CU from IO66 June 2-8.

WOW! what a start to the 2001 E's season. Good opening Sunday culminating in a QSO with JY4NE at 1135 UTC. Very brief opening on 12th to CT but nothing else - an Aurora popped up and the band fell flat for E's. Sunday 13th opening started about 1130 UTC with strong 9A/S5 stations. Some activity from I but much weaker than normal. V strong DL's/PA etc. Saw a spot from G6YIN wkd JY4NE and then went to .110 and heard JY4NE weak - wasn't sure it was him and then 30 secs of very good signals but only 51-53 - enough to make a very quick QSO and then heard no more. LZ and YO both V strong at that time - good double hop. Ali gave me a 57 so almost one way prop! So a good start for day two! Off on holiday next week so better be some good E's!!!!! Simon GM4PLM

Re: Xatlantic season. There is much confusion around identifying video carriers. Normally there are more than one tv station using the same frq. offset. These transmitters are so powerful that signals from skewed or scatter paths may point you to a wrong source QTH. I've seen many 3C video reports from SA, EU and NA, i.e., when Malabo TV is off the air. There are some cheap and easy methods described many times on this announcement page to read video frequency quite accurately. See http://web.one.net.au/~vk4cp/digipan.htm and http://www.geocities.com/toddemslie/ianrobertstvlist.html for info and video lists. About a quiter zone for xatlantic monitoring could be an odd freq. like 50091.5 - gl 73

Hi all, Just a note to say that I will be QRV from IO87 and IO97 on Friday/Saturday and possibly Sunday. I am going to attend a funeral, so exact times during which I will be QRV from each square cannot be predicted, but I will have 100w and a HB9CV (must be light - travelling by air). If there is desperate need for one sqaure rather than the other (IO97 ?) I will try and bias my operation towards that square. Comments by email please. 73

FIRST 48250 EUROPEAN VIDEO THIS SEASON was received here in DM62 (New Mexico) yesterday, May 13, between about 1640Z and 1715Z. Not very strong, but the earliest in the E-season that I have ever copied it here "out west." I had good 2-hop into W1/2/3/4 at the time. Hope this bodes well. BTW, I use a 35 - 70 Mhz, 9 element Log Periodic to receive. Look for me during the season on 50.092 CW when Eu possible. CU all soon. 73

QUIETER ZONE FOR TRANSATLANTIC CONTACTS? As the days draw closer to the first Es QSOs across the pond, I can't help but ask if there is a practical place to operate where people would listen and beacon interference would be minimum- below the heavily occupied region beginning ~ 50.090? Typically, the region from ~ 50.095 - 50.107 quickly fills with endless CQs, many of which are generated by automated "CQ machines" once it is realized that the potential for transatlantic Es exists. Sometimes, these transmissions seem endless even if CQs go unanswered for long periods of time. Obviously, hearing weak signals in this mess is next to impossible. Any weak sig (CW) zone suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TNX es 73...

What beacons ought I to be hearing from my QTH, 10 miles N. of Brighton? I'm using a 3 ele beam at roof level with an FT 100.I had 5 QSOs during December, but have heard nothing since on 6, despite much listening and a number of calls. The beam is about 12 years old; I ordered a 5 ele ZX over 2 months ago and am still awaiting it, but with the total lack of success in over 4 months I'm beginning to wonder if I am wasting both time and money and that a new antenna may not make that much difference! Please take a look at http://www.conknet.com/~b_mobile/EastGrids.html and if you can add to this please e-mail me so I can plot it before the path picks up. The goal of the map is to show what is possible from certain areas of North America with a bias on Es. Some of the distances are quite remarkable. 601 grids are represented. I have just booked my flights to go back to the Falkland Islands as VP8DBL. I plan to leave on the 24th May and come back around 5th June. There is an outside chance I may have to cancel at the last minute, but as it is an all-expenses-paid trip I hope I won't have to - and I do have to work at least a little bit! You might think that it is a trifle late and you may well be right! However, I saw little thrill in going back in mid April and working all the same stations again in 2001 as I did in 2000. However last year, Keith VP8CMT worked into the UK on 29th May with an Es extension so the plan is to concentrate on trying to work into northern Europe and northern USA via this mode. Of course I'll work anything else I hear. I'll be taking an amplifier with me so this might help. Maybe this is the last chance for this cycle! Chris

Re: 9a4qv QSL. Dante, ALL 9A stations are OK via Buro (anybody REQUESTING qsl direct is greedy $$ colector). Of course, according to (my) bad expirience with it in the past, you might want to send qsl direct. You might want to check www.hamradio.hr for Croatian callbook (will be operational sometime this month according to webmaster). I'll try to find out 9a4qv's address and let you know later.

Yesterday morning, Mario (K2MUB) reported multiple 48.250 video carriers and 48.242. I may have heard some weak 48.250 but I'm uncertain. As far as I know, this is one of the earliest reports of transatlantic Es by North America this season. Let's hope for a good summer. Lately, several of us have noted a large amount of domestic QSOing in the DX window. I can only hope this fades away as the season progresses. Best DX es 73...

I would also like to thank all those who worked me during the Contest; without their support, this achivement would not have been possible. Hi Martin, I did build a 1/4 wave vertical the beginning of April 2001 which I use mobile. When the band to opens it workes very well. I did work from KG32 4 stations in Eu and from V5 more than 100 stations in EU with 80 watts out. Signal reports from 51 to 59+. It all depents on band openings. It is a normal 1/4 wave (142 cm) whip mounted on to of the car's room for more detail you can e-mail me. I did supprised myself with the prefomance of this simple antenna.

- Wednesday, May 02, 2001 at 19:47:02 (GMT/BST)
To G6IBC, again on the antenna: if you want to build a vertical antenna more performing than the simple quarter-wave vertical, you may build a J-pole which is very simple to construct (just scale the dimensions of the 144-MHz version that you can find in almost any antenna book). But do you really want to mount something so bulky on your boat? 73
Tony, I0JX <i0jx@amsat.org>
- Wednesday, May 02, 2001 at 09:24:05 (GMT/BST)
To Martyn G6IVC: it depends on the gain you expect from the vertical antenna. For car-mobile applications, I have been using a 144-MHz 5/8-wavelength magnetic-mount antenna which works very fine as a 1/4 wavelength antenna at 50 MHz (you just need increasing the radiator length by some 10 cm for ideal SWR around 50.100, not complex to do mechanically). The rod is roughly 1.30 m high and the gain you get is just that of a quarter-wave antenna. If you want more gain, in the Diamond and Comet catalog there are several models that can suit your needs, the most appealing one being a collinear array about 6-meter long and yielding a gain of some 5 dB. 73
