Best aurora in 10 years since Nov 1991, when last night I witnessed VK1, VK2, VK3, VK5, VK7 stations all able to work each other. The influence of the aurora extended north to the QG62 grid square with 46.172 audible on Au b/s as well as Tamworth video 46.260, Wagg 46.240 599 ABC TV 57.250 599 beacons VK7RAE, VK7RST 50.057/297 VK2RSY 52 Mhz and VK2BHO, VK2FLR, VK2YOC all in as well as VK1VP, VK1RX, VK7ZOO, VK7KLA, VK5DK/NJ/RO/ and dozens of VK3.s 59+ qtf 120 TO 160 DEGREES ALSO HEARD 45.2396 AND 45.250 WEAK zl South Is TV and heard that ZL3 worked ZL4 at least. watch band next 48 hours for some remarkable dx that usually follows this type of event.

During the opening I copied 48.2396, 48.250 +1 very strong and a weaker 48.260+. later a single 49.7396 and 49.7600 probably Black Sea region. Koji was 5x9 most of the time qtf 270 degrees over Mt Gambier just like ZC4MK in 1991. An es extension to VK6 is attributed to the path as the VK6RTW Albany beacon on 50.308 and the Perth beacon on 50.065 were in and out. Also backscatter was heard from both JAs working JY9NX and many VK's calling on top blindly despite the fact that they could not hear the JY9, only the VK3's working him. The window was narrow in latitude but spanned grids QF02 to QF32 some 400 miles/700 kM. DX was around 13500 to 14000 kM same as from VK to Central America. Its a pity the shock wave has wiped the path out, we may never hear it again for another 11 years.

I did not hear much until 1000z and saw Nick's report
of hearing some JAs earlier. JA7WSZ was the first one to
come in, which is extremely unusual, then JA1RJU. VK3DUT
was not the strongest but the longest heard for almost one
hour. QTF was about 120. Around 1020z was the peak, and VK3DUT
and VK3SIX were 59+10dB at the strongest point. VK5DK was heard
ealier but QSO was only made in the last minute of the
opening. Nick 5B4FL said he did not hear any, or too weak to
work. 4X guys seemed not hearing you guys at all. 55.250
Jordan TV and 50.080 4X beacon would be a good pilot for the
future openings.

Nice aurora this evening. Made 70 QSO's in 2 hrs. 17 countries from OH to I5. Also OE, S5 and YU with good aurora signals. And finally EW6DI, LY2MW and YL3AG with AEs.
Sure has been fun. Remember this kind of aurora openings only from 2 meters. Pity to much clouds in the sky to see the aurora borealis. 73,

Hi Guys & Gals, Looking to build a BIG GUN ant fer 6m as I think my 5ele EAGLE ant is now ready for the scrap heap or alt 4m beam. So looking for a design for 9 or 10 ele's I thought that i had seen a link on here for the archive 10ele/html but not there I see that m2 do a FB BIG GUN but they want to meet you to see if you're really BONKERS or just very BRAVE!!!! so if anyone has a design (****that works of course****& so no designs for 14ele's on 100' booms that is even too big fer my plot!!) would they mind sending me either a link to there site or the design info it would be gratefully received.....
Very good AU this afternoon in IO93QV (tnx 4KCT BAZ for LL)but i still need my preamp back for better results on the noise floor stations even with adition of LDF & new RIG you guys in IO70 are still not upto your old strengths G4HBA etc 54>55 tropo so Either the hill in front of me which rises by 30m to my south has risen to 50m higher or my IC756 is really not that good!!!!! so I need my preamp back from Microwave Mods...

~0100Z tonight we had AU-Es to VE8, and OX (x2 bcns).Also
as a special treat for those of us in the NE, we had various
48/49MHz EU video offsets up to around s7 levels for some of the
better W1 stations. Think there was a very real possibility
of a W1-GM (or nearby) QSO taking place, but few calling (this side anyway)
and the real peak was only 5 mins (tops!) Be alert people!
Wouldn't be the first time we've worked into Eu during totally
unexpected times in the middle of the night !! Mike

You can't operate 50 MHz without a great deal of both dedication and patience. On 29 Oct 1989 I had a QSO with G4KLF/MM in grid LL84. Tony had recently arrived in Oman and was not allowed to operate Six from A4, so kindly made the /MM QSO in international waters for the grid. Last night, eleven years and five months almost to the minute, I worked Tony again from A45ZN for my country #130 on Six. Thanks to Tony for a great effort from A4 and thanks to Ted G4UPS for handling the QSL chores. 73

The WSBA Club (where all 6m operation by ZC4ATC, RAF, FL etc. is) TS-690 has to be returned to HQ in a few weeks. We do have an FT-767, though, and would be very happy if anyone can donate or sell us cheap a 6m module for it. We can then promise more activity on six in the Es season. BTW we are also licenced for 4m, but have no equipment.

Does anyone know of a design for a dual-band vertical for 6m and 10m or a commercial antenna for those two bands ONLY (not a massive HF-VHF multi-band antenna)? I like the look of the 10/15m design in the ARRL Antenna Book but I'm not sure how best to tackle scaling it to 6/10m. I should have said this is for base-station use, not mobile, and could be up to about 4 metres in length. Although an "end-fed" would be ideal, radials would be acceptable.

Alan, it was great to work you virtually on your first day in 3C and it was even greater working you on your last. Sometimes the sporadic band is particularly predictable! I remember the excitement when we all heard that you were going to 3C and that excitement lasted for a full three years until yesterday. 6m is magic not only for propagation but more importantly through the way is brings together fanatics from around the world. Maybe, emotion runs high sometimes but all is usually forgiven in the end! Thanks from all the 6m enthusiasts from around the globe and don't even consider losing touch even with all with the excitement and other distractions that can be found in Houston... Chris

I've had to do it and pull the plug and go qrt. I don't think I realised how much 6m meant to me - it is hard to give it up and is like a divorce with all the withdrawal symptoms! Anyway, I leave here next week to transfer to Houston. I have really enjoyed 6m the last 3 years from here and especially all the energy and fanaticism that comes with 6m. 3C is not a magic spot, but it has been surprising how often the band is open from here to Europe - far more than I would have expected - and thanks for all those beacon reports. But in 3 years, I have only had 3500 qsos (many repeat) and 87 countries with the longest DX being to 9M2, YB and 14 qsos with the US. I never made it to VK or JA unfortunately, but I understand my beacon was heard overnight. Chris - thanks so much for these pages, they are world class!! For those needing QSLs, my address will remain unchanged for several months, then I will post a change.

Spain, being a very montainous country, has a huge network of TV repeaters. Setting high and powerful VHF transmitters was at the begining the first solution to provide a wide coverage.
The big 250 Kw ERP TV tx on channel 2, Navacerrada, and almost all Spanish VHF TV, channels 2-11, must be closing soon due to the arrival of the terrestrial digital radio and its allocation on VHF band II and the reallocation of band I to the new or existing UHF TV channels.
The EA 48.250,2 "beacon" must QRT not late than July 31st 2001.

Finally an other good opening to South America after 2 weeks of silence.
Started here in JN53, yesterday evening around 21.00z and lasted about one hour.
Worked 15 stations (but listened many others) PY, CX, LU grid GF05-15-66 and FF76-87-95.
Signals up to S8, mostly S 3-4.

2001 summer es contest :
i know its a few months to go , but possibly we need a contingency plan for portable contest stations , foot and mouth and how it affects us.
being that at present [maybe not later though] ,access to most field sites is not allowed.
this is something that does really need to be organised within the correct time span and not left to the last minute, as i know some of our team have to plan well ahead to get the necessary time off and organise permission for site use and eqpt etc .
worth thinking about anyway.

I loved working the medium strength aurora yesterday.
The aurora cloud was so much in South that I had to
beam QTF 270-290. I worked 12 QSO's including ON4GG,

to operate the June VHF QSO Party. Ron, W4WA (who some of
you may recognize as having a big signal on 160M) will be
joining me for this one. (He is an excellent 6M op as well).
While it will likely be a bit early for multi-hop Es to
EU, 'ya never know!

I wanted to let everyone know about the Finnish Club station OH8TA's Expedition to IOTA island Hailuto in the Gulf of Bothnia off of the Finnish coast near Oulu. We will be operating for three days from the university of Oulu's marine research station on the island.
We will be operating on HF VHF and UHF. The frequency for 6 meters will be 50.110USB.
Operating conditions for 6 meters will be a Cushcraft 3 element Yagi, Yaesu ATAS-100 with GP and counterpoise, Yaesu FT-100@100-500Watts. The Yagi and ATAS-100 will be mounted atop the lighthouse station at 30-35 meters above sea-leval.
The dates will be April 6-8.
KB9YXM is a US operator currently living in Finland and very active
on the 50Mhz and above.
QSL to KB9YXM will be 100% via OH8TA

I'm sorry to advise that the beacon VK6RSX on 50.304 MHz at Exmouth Western Australia is QRT indefinitely. A new site is being sought. EMC problems at the old site have forced the closure. With 50W omni, the beacon had been well reported. Hopefully a new location will eventually be found at this latitude.

Gave up with my V51KC QSL ...worked him first in 1989 as ZS3KC - 3 QSL attempts over the next 2 yrs brought nothing.
Worked him as V51KC May 2000, another direct request and Nothing.
He answered my PSK CQ on 20m in January, and I mentioned it ...thought my luck was in when he asked for the QSO details and my address over the air, saying it would be in the post tomorrow, 3 months later still nothing ...life goes on hi!

V51KC QSL : It seems he does RX the qsl request...but simply does not answer. I did get the qsl after breaking the pile-up a second time a year after the first qso and asked him whether he would send me a qsl. 4 day's later I had mine in the mail, with my original self adressed envelope........might be just luck.

Not on the radio at all, some youths threw half a brick at the car yesterday. Internet has been switched off too, road to airport was closed by poice/army yesterday too due to the riots...otherwise I am OK, the hotel hasn't ran out of beer!

Tnx Steve, a good story about VK3FA!! I wonder just how many of us there are out there that are fanatics, thrillseekers and a little/lot antisocial in some way?? I would not have it any other way - it adds tremendously to the energy and vitality of 6m. I have come to admire the dedication and devotedness of the 6m gang in the last 3 years who are always seem to be floating around the 6m opening scene, and post observations, predictions and hypotheses! Here is a story Death of an Amateur.
VK3FA Jack Falkenberg died alone on a property 20KM south of Hamilton some time between 1999 and 2000.
A visit to the site discovered old MOPAR 56 Mhz equipment and the reamins of I guess the first 5M rhombics evere erected in Victoria, open wire feeders and wooden poles beaming USA. Qsl cards from all states of VK made on 56 Mhz CW as well as ZL2, W5 and ZS6 qsos. so the mystery of who made the first 6M qso and when is finally solved.
Who was this guy and why did he die alone? Only the oldest hams in this district rememeber his name and callsign.
Was he the 1950's version of the excessive compulsive characters who pervade the 6M dx band today.
Every state has one and I can think of at least a half a dozen isolates who live alone who do nothing but eat sleep breath the 6M band in search of that ellusive DX.
Tiffs and scuffles are the order of the day and like them VK3FA was an isolate he refused to have anyone on his farm as long ago as any here can remember his callsign.
I found rare 56 Mhz qsl cards dating back to the start of 1959 written in copper plate ink and pen. He made a 15000 kM qso around the time that XE was worked from VK3 but he never claimed it.
Incredible as it may seem this guy died on the back porch near his radio gear and was not found for at least 2 years.
How could local amateurs lose track of one of their sons?
And a famous one (in 1959) I mean he made the first 6m qso with South Africa. Right?
What was his name Jack! Vale VK3FA this is his story.

Re: African 48 MHz TV transmitters. The info at kb2wf
's web site was incorporated from information I had published/sent some time ago. The main change is that there are only two transmitters on the African continent (that I know of). They are 3C Equatorial Guinea on ~48250350 plenty drift upwards during the warm-up cycle, and Kenya on 48249982, eastern shore of Lake Victoria. Most hams call out 3C when they are probably receiving Kenya. As Alan 3C5I has repeatedly pointed out, 3C TV only starts up at 14.30z. Kenya seems to on most of the day, as I have received it on MS early in the morning over weekends. 3C TV can be readily IDed by the extremely grotty carrier sound when listened to in sideband mode, presumably caused by the tube being thrashed, as the first 50 Hz sidebands are (were) only 10 dB down! No wonder the TX went belly-up. This parameter should be around -25 to -30 dB in a correctly set-up TV TX. There are no QRO indicators on low VHF in Southern Africa. Other 48 MHz TV in the "region" is high power Homs Syria on 48250168 24 hours and a new medium power Middle East TX on ~48249990 that started up some months ago tending to zero-beat Kenya at times, drifting around a bit. TV-DXers in northern Europe regularly receive the high power Iranian outlets on 48239620 and 48259440/712 MHz in the spE season, and these are also candidates for the "3C-TV" ID, although it should be easy to separate them simply by antenna direction from there.
Measuring TV carriers: the info at kb2wf is fine, but these days it is easy to use software such as Digipan 1.6 (recommended), Spectran or Hamview to measure the audio offset.

Steve, why would I want the TV fixed??!! It's perfect now that it's dead quiet...A year ago, they had a new 20Kw TX delivered to the site but never installed. Anyone want to come and visit and fix it? Its on top of a volcano, camp-out and a bad 2 hour ride to get there. G0KZG/MM has been active the last few evenings monitoring 50.110. Andy is on the Charles Darwin presently approaching Madeira and has good signal using 100 watts into 5 el Yagi. He will be around Madeira until 20 March then south around southern Africa to Durban so lots of rare wet squares should be available via TEP to EU. He has been heard here strong here the last two evenings passing through IM38, IM37, IM24 and IM23. Adam, 9A4QV/MM is also now active in Med and has been worked locally several times recently, yesterday in JM86. These are all good news for African square collectors. Thanks, fellows.

The 3C TV has collapsed and will be out of commission for 10 days!!!! YEH!!! That is liable to be weeks, not days. Anyway, for the first time, I get nice quiet listening at nights and have been amazed at the openings to ZS for the last 3 nights at 1900-2100, and also s9+60 video on 48250 from the east (5z?). It proves to me how difficult it is to point at the 3CTV noise generator and hope to hear 6m signals through it. So each evening I will check and call in ZS direction. Station close down time is Sunday March 25th - I've extended it as long as possible because of the equinox.

My phone line finally installed so am back on internet after being off since last June. Interesting day on Six yesterday with good condx to Med most of the afternoon and evening favouring the west. Early evening G0KZG/MM was worked in IM38 and IM37. TR0A/B and 3C5I in late evening S9 and heard JK/5N0 but no 5U propagation. E-mail still not 100% but should be sorted out early next week. UK9AA worked by several ZS stations on 25 Feb but we are still watching for VU. Hope for good condx over the weekend.

BQ9P HELP : Yesterday stations from Okinawa were in and strong. We tryed to take BQ9P's attention on the HF bands without luck (actually they did not want to qsy). We from South America would appreciate if stations with continous propagation to BQ9P could advise the team to monitor six in our direction from 0:00Z to 4:00Z and/or be kind to QSY whenever we notice that there is propagation to that area.

Hi Al, from what I remember, this went QRT about 2-3 years ago. At the time, there was talk about about finding another site for it but I guess nothing came of it. I used to hear it hear via MS easily enough (~500kms).

Yes I agree some of the long path qrb's are an anomolous calculation because of the way the signals arrive. OK on JA7WSZ will do a run also for the Italian. The 30,500 kM is certainly getting almost to the incredible stage.
I always remember working NI6E beaming at Europe (330 degrees) in the middle of an opening to PA/DL. If you know M2 yagis the side to front is 40 db so there fore the path from Hawaii came from the North at least. so was it long path side scatter or what. main aim is to raise the awareness about paths other than direct at times not generally attributed with propagation. I think the tables reflect the operating achievement, and that was the aim,, again thanks to the dozens of submissions. I can get it onto the table within five minutes of receiving data.

The C5 expedition was once agn in for over 2 hours!, it nice to see that ACTIVITY makes a world of difference! I guess we have far more 6m openings than we ever might expect. In the last weeks we had daily openings to africa via F2, even with these low sunspot number! Congrats on C56/DL2OE C56/DL7CM. Does anyone know how D4 can be reached on the phone?

Re LP contacts, we enjoyed several QSO's LP with JA's in 2000. In
particular, we have had QSO with JA4MBM located PM64 on March 19th
at 2302z (QSO confirmed). Now, I would really appreciate
somebody expert in radio propagation to help me to compute my QRB, considering that
i am in JN61GU, that my antenna was aiming at 190 degs and that

Peter, G0KYX Welcome here on 6. Hope you like it. For sure it is fun, joy, frustration and madness. But it's a hobby that needs a virus. Wonder if you are resistant for it.
Regarding the antenna: A 5 el at one wavelength (6 meters long)will hardly give you 10 dBD. So you need at least a 2 wavelength to get close to it...And many more elements.
5 or 6 elements at sufficient height will do the job. Better train your skills. Sure you will work the DX than. Good luck and we look forward to hear from you,

G0KYX de G8BCG. Peter - welcome to the UKSMG site. I take it that you are QTHR in Burgess Hill - in which case you are far enough south to get in on the (almost) daily action to the south. For the past week or so ZSs and 3C5I have been around at lunch time CW & SSB and around 14:00 to 15:30 we have been treated to good openings to C56 and 5U at strengths good enough for wet string. Six is all about location (*3), timing (*3)and of course luck (*n). Use callsign search or scrollback on the DX cluster to see what can be worked when. If all else fails there will be loads of EU DX to be worked via Eporadic E in a couple of months time all at S9+++. Re antennas, stacking dissimilar yagis is not a good idea but keeping both for comparison (if you have the room) may be. Drop me an e-mail if you wish to chat further 73 from sunny Cornwall (IO70RK)

In real terms I am a newcomer to "real" 6M. I have an old 3 ele beam with a gain of about 5dB. It certainly doesn't seem very efficient...only heard about 8 or 9 stns on 6 in 6 months...worked just 2.[both G.] I'm considering getting a 5 ele beam with a gain of about 12 dB. Should I simply replace the old beam, or is their any value in stacking the 2. If so, do I need 1/2 wavelength between them to make it of any value. ?
[My rig is the FT-100 with 100W. annd I also have an in-shack pre-amp, giving me about 20dB. Antenna is about 5m. agl. I've just joined UKSMG and am ready to learn...and persevere!]

No, but I was just running 120 W into the 1/4wave. Now with 50 W into the 2 el (spaceproblem!) I have worked 1 single station on F2 this cycle. It could have been 20~30 more, but I won't work a station again if there's a pile-up who need him for a new one. In cycle #23 I created a pile-up of JA's on skew. Good old days Steve. What do you really think in 1989 when I turned your heads around from the Atlantic that I was running 100 watts? There its out in the open gasp shock horror. And do I believe that some of those 599 sigs from EU came from 1 and 10 watt transmitters? We ran the power necessary to get the job done and risked proescution just to work Europe. How silly it seems now and what a sell out for the legal guys who only wanted to work one Australian. You can now never really know who was legit and who wasn't and if you pick on the 6M boys what about all the 3KW HF amps that are being sold in VK when the aboslute limit is 400 watts pep??

To Neil G0JHC, no dont remember Cycle 2, but for sure nature is in charge of the 6M band and not amateurs willing in the dx. I always remember the story of a Townsville (VK4) chap who moved south to VK7 and told everyone Ill show you how easy it is to work 6M dx, back where I come from you work 10 countries per month. Well if you ask him now I think since his move from 23 South to 40 South he did work 10 countries in the ten years. But having said the obvious, if you put up a good station you can get fantastic results at this latitude 38S it just takes so much time as you found from Mexico, and all you got was VK's and ZL's of any dx of note. So to work out this cycle go North or South as the case maybe and chase the sun like the JAs do in JR6. VK8 is a great spot for DX if you can stand the heat and flies or how about Broome VK6 (3000 kM closer to Europe) than VK2/VK3. I am sure if I parked a car on the N/West coast of VK6 for the next 6 months I could work a thousand Europeans. Anyone want to pay me wages? Cos if I did that I would surely starve without any means of support.. it is but a hobby guys ease up..

Try '93-'94 Colin, that's a period with comparible fluxlevels. I'm sure that the picture looks slighly grimmer than. Actually it's worse because there is a total absence of flares and therefore geomagnetic activity. There is a simple rule for 6m prop no flaires > no(little) propagation.
At present the smoothed geomagnetic index (Ap) is at the 3rd lowest value since the beginning of the previous cycle. It just isn't good, it's not even moderate, it's absolutely poor. QSO's are now made because of higher activity and much much more power.

Re cycle Colin, you sound like a VK8/VK4. There are places on this planet thant couldnt work 60 countries in a lifetime, and you have to appreciate that fact that your position on the planet is what determines your ability to work 6M DX. And its not the number of countries that counts (an affliction of the people on these pages) some people would appreciate just one more country like from here and in VK6 where collectively they have had 60 countries in a lifetime. Peoples anxiety about the decline of the cycle comes mainly from the lower latitudes, and in 1992 at 38S there was only 1 country PER Year worked until 2000. I wonder how long you would stay interested with that sort of motivation. GL.

Should Cycle 23 continue its current "development" the next solar minimum could occur as early as 2005 and with Cycle 24 peaking in 2009. Solar min. is of course good news for 160m so guess some are happy hi.

i was one of the participants myself.
do we have to wait until the uksmg agm to find out the results or will we be notified sooner i ask myself?????.

Hi all!
This is sort of radio related so I hope I do not step on anyones toes.
I recieved a letter today from the Swedish Postal services. It was regarding my Po Box and everyone elses Po box in Sweden. They think the annual fee for having a Po Box is way to low compared to other countries so they want to raise it till a minimum of 1500 Swedish Crows a year. This is approximatly US$180.
Yes you read right - 180 US Dollars a year for a Po Box. Not only that, it says Minimum (local post offices may extend the price as suitable).
They claim such is the "consumerprice index" - Now, I know this is way high compared to other countries and I would like to send them a BIG complaint and give them a list of what it costs to have a Po box in other places.
Naturally I will send a copy of my complaints and the list to other organisations.
I like those who want to send me a short mail. Tell me your name, your city, your country and how much you pay for your Po Box yearly. (Please do not hesitate - all countries and cities are important)
