A QSP from KG4ZI (FK29)...Pat and Dave arrived tonite and were QRV with only a 2 element quad because they were delayed arriving in Gitmo. In spite of the small antenna they were working many in N.A. this evening. They will have the 6M7OZI long boom yagi put together and up by morning and will be QRV looking for Europe at sunrise. They operate on 50.102 and the calls are KG4ZI and KG4XE. GL!!!

Worked K2RTH after a year and half of silence with extremely steady signal strength. Heard many more weak US's but could not copy them with much QRM. Would appreciate no duplicate one-hop QSOs during such a rare opening. Thanks.

GM6NX..My excitement at working VK6JQ at 1056z this morning has been subdued by the news of Ken, G5KW's, passing. It was completely out of the blue I heard weak CW calling CQ and a QRZ elicited "VK" where I was sure it must be only "UK". There was teriffic video QRM and I gave 329 for a 529 back and if it had been any later there would have been no QSO as the video skip changed and there was S9++ video wiping out all trace of him. I did not expect VK at this time of year as last cycle it was February when I first worked VK. I did not manage it for myself but the Stirling Club now has WAC in just over a year QRV on the band, just a pity the QRM came along! 73 Bill

There will be a special event station on 6m tomorrow (Saturday) from Crookhaven, Ireland, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of coastal stations by Marconi. He set up two stations in Ireland, one at Rosslare and the other at Crookhaven near the Mizen Head as well as others in the UK. I will be operating the 6m station from 09:00 to 17:00 UTC with the callsign EI1CCK, "CK" being the original callsign used by Marconi, and the "1C" for 1 century. The HF and 6m station will be run from the very room that Marconi used. Hope to work as many as conditions allow. There will of course be a special QSL card for all contacts.

My friendship with Ken, G5KW, is relatively a short one. I met Ken on 28.885 where he was set up to work crossband, during cycle 21. We had many qsos on crossband, 10m, and other (won't go into that!) My fondest memory of Ken was the day he had worked VK6 crossband. Ken was overjoyed and celebrating on 885! He was quite a guy! Ken I hope 6m is always open where you are. We'll miss you.

I'm saddened to hear about Ken, G5KW. I'll remember him well for his crossband exploits off the Western shores of England prior to 50 MHz grants in the UK. Ken was truely a 6m pioneer and this is a great loss to our community. Best wishes to his family and friends.

Ken Ellis, G5KW. Silent Key.
With sadness I have to report that Ken Ellis, G5KW passed away on June 28th
. He died in Folkestone Hospital in the presence of his family following a
prolonged period of ill-health. He was 92 years of age.
In his younger days Ken was Major K.E.S. Ellis, MBE, Royal Signals. He held
several call-signs while serving in the Middle East, the most famous perhaps
being MD5KW, the call allocated to him when he was in the Suez Canal Zone
where he carried out pioneer work at frequencies above 28 MHz , notably in
the 50-58 MHz part of the spectrum. He continued to be active on the 50 MHz
band until a year or so ago when to his deep regret, ill-health forced him to
lose down his station ..
Ken continued to be associated with the Middle East after retiring from the
Army, working there in a civilian capacity. In 1947 he was awarded the MBE
for his work with the Middle East Forces Broadcasting Organization , and in
1950 The King of Saudi Arabia bestowed on him the royal robes and
dagger, the second highest award in that country, for his work with the Saudi
General Intelligence Department. In 1986 the Radio Society of Great Britain
elected him an Honorary Vice President. An article describing some of
Ken's many achievements in more detail is scheduled to appear in the next
issue of Six News.
G5KW , founder member of the UK Six Metre Group, dedicated "Magic Band"
operator , fine gentleman and good friend , will be greatly missed by all
who knew him , and most especially by his wife Rita and family.
Funeral arrangements will be private in accordance with Ken's wishes

On CAT-scope this was originally found by Chris at Martin Lynch (020 8566 1120 quick plug) who pointed me in the right direction. I had been saying to him how good the 756 was for this, yet Yaesu had never picked up on it. Perhaps once someone has got to grips with the CAT-scope they might write an article for 6 news? Understand that there is to be a new JRC with 6m too, loads of choice, not enough cash!!!

Thanks Paul & Kerry. I downloaded the bandscope for the FT920 and have installed it. It seems to work fine but it is in japanese. Anyone know how to change the parameters of the scan range? Would like to have 100 kHz of scan range with a 2.4 kHz bandwidth. Tnx Dale

Re: Storms - Dunno about E's! I had my head down - not seen an electrical storm like that in GM for a long time. Local TV mast was hit (Darvel) - took out both pri and sec power supplies - was off from 1245 till 2230 local - Know Aberdeen was getting it this morning - the storms were still rumbling on after 0300 this morning - early nigt tonight! BTW that MCEE site is also good for rainscatter on 3cm!

For Yaesu bandscope. As you enter the Yaesu Japan site, after you have got through the Vertex redirection, you reach the home page which shows the MK5. On the left of the page are a number of click ons. After 4 or 5 down, you come to one called support I think or its the one next to that. As you get into the screen from that click on, the is more text and hidden in the text is further direction to another oage, where scopes for the FT1000, 1000MP, 920 , 847 and others! are shown. From here you can download the software pretty quickly. I don't know why Yaesu have'nt promoted this, as its the big thing lacking on Yaesu radios for 6m. On 756Pro II Adey, thks re Bablefish, credit where its due, I thing it was G8BCG who directed us to this. Unfortunately for me I can't get it to work..

It appears as freeware, which you can download from the site and enable on your pc. Goes under the name of CAT Scope. Unfortunately I can't get it to work as all the instructions are in Japanese.

A tip for those wishing to have their six metre cards field checked. It appears that deleted entity cards cannot be field checked even if they are less than the 10 year old field check rule. This can still catch cards from OK and ZS9 for example. These cards must be sent to ARRL HQ.

Hi everybody, due some interference from 6m at the 2m-rig we were not so active on 6m as we liked to. Another limmitation was based to the fact that we had to mount the beam to the side of the ship and we could't work in all directions. Anyway we made about 100 QSO's from JO12 mainly in Tropo, 2 QSO to SM in MS. No QSO via ES :-(( Only PA3HEN/MM was called by a 9H-station on 2m just before we went QRT. Hope you enjoyed the trip to JO12 as much as we did and see you next time from JO12/JO13!?

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure to work FG5BG at 1527z as a new one - #165 nw. He was max 579! Seems, the frequency was not too busy at that time and the skip changed from UK to south-Germany (=>JN59). He was audible around 20 min. Heard nothing before from FG5BG, when G's & ON's spotted him in the cluster. GL!

FG5 banging in today, unfortunately so was the rest of the UK. I feel for stations who didn't work him due to the inconsiderate beahaviour of the pile up, who called continually during qso's, ensuring that stations were left not knowing if they had made the log or not. Hence 2nd contacts were made by some stations to ensure that they had made the log, when they would have known on the first one if others would just have been quiet for a while. Anyway big thanks to the new antenna rigger!!!

Chris A45XR informs me that he had his best 6m opening yesterday since he started on 3rd April this year.
He was in here peaking 599 from 0843 to 0908 utc yesterday.
Chris requests QSL cards via Chris Dabrowski, P.O. Box 2038, CPO 111, Sultanate of Oman.
He reports that mail from the UK takes only about 3 to 4 days. He will in Poland from 29th June until 2nd August.
He has now worked 70 countries on 6m since 3rd April this year, and he admits that he is now hooked on the magic band.

Regarding the polarisation question, I used 10W to a 1/4 wave on my way down to Bedford last Sunday evening. Worked everything first call at 5/9. Not always possible with a beam! Regarding the tests with Enrico IK2GSO that Clive did this morning, then I have been at Enricos QTH last May and done them for myself...."nowt" on the 10 element but plenty on the 6 element vertical beam. So as Paul Daniels would say "That's magic"

those with quads using elements at 45 degs will see good results with phase shifting , my 10m quad is excellent for this in Es , i noticed on monday morning this week that my vertical on my car was receiving SP 9A ES at s-9+ whilst on my yagi [in works shack ]was barely s-3 sigs , i had 30mins qso mobile with sp2mpo using just my ic-505 [8w] and vertical with sigs both ways of s-9+20 most of the qso .

RE: Clive,G4FVP . I've run a 4 el cross yagi on 10 meter and noticed the same. Circular polarisation may be a compromise compared to a single polarisation but it eliminates most of the qsb/fading, and can therefore (under given condx) be much better.

Having used two tonnas over the years, I agree with all Clive's comments. Perhaps the most important connections to keep dry are the two clamps that connect the matching rod to the driven element. The clamps are die-cast ally which oxidise very badly and can create a high resistance connection, which ruins the otherwise excellent matching of the tonna. A few turns of coax at the feedpoint - to form a choke balun - is also very worthwhile on the tonna. 73,

A few tips for users of the Tonna beam. I have just taken mine down after 9 years of flawless service. Antenna is still in good conditions but a few tips for new users. Remember to grease the wing nuts and element support bolts as these are NOT stainless and rust badly. Make every effort for a good connection in the junction box, I would recommend lighly greasing the connections after connecting the coax - also make sure the inner of the coax is well connected as the bolt and washer (in the junction box) supplied is not very heavy duty. Back in 1992, I used enamelled paint at the junctions of the elements to the plastic boom mounts to prevent corrosion and this has paid off - looks good after all these years.

Interesting experiment with Enrico, IK2GSO this morning comparing a 10 el horizonal yagi with a 6 el vertical yagi. The vertical yagi was 10db better on this test suggesting a substantial phase shift during the Es hop (my RX antenna is a 4 el yagi). Enrico has notcied this effect several times especially on TEP and also reports that KH7 (dream on) was better on the vertical beam. Perhaps the lesson is to have two beams one vertical and one horizontal switchable from the shack. Anyone conducted tests on 6m using circular polarisation?

Peter PA2VST: I think EK6AD condx have changed a bit, it's best to try a card direct post first. I don't think much of the post gets lost. BTW I worked quite a lot of EUs from ZC4FL today, QSL direct CBA although I shall be away all of July.

RE: EK6AD QSL was and still is a problem. QSL bureau didn't work and post seem to get lost. A group did put all cards together and send them by DHL. So get all together and do it the same way again. Don't throw money away by IRC's dollars and direct cards because they will get lost. 73:>

Usually late evening, 22:00 GMT or later, the band tend to open up toward south. Yesterday evening I heard GB3RMK and GB3LER S5, but no other activity.

Thanks firstly to Tony for the excellent trip to activate the less frequented squares in EI .EI is very difficult from this location but fortunately we were blessed with good short skip condx and you in IO44 and many other EIs in IO53 were worked with just 10watts and a dipole. Secondly its good to see the 6mtr community has not lost its sense of humour with regards to my earlier posting and thanks for all the comments and mails - I havn't decided yet whether I'm a minnow or shark !!

Hi Again Guys, heres the stats for the trip all qsls are now on www.eqsl.cc Stations worked in total 440 IO55 7 (lousy prop except for sm)theres a G station planning a trip to 55.IO54 86,IO44 210 and IO43 137. Sorry to all the guys I missed and thanks again for the kind words expressed here. The reason I mainly used a 1/4 wave whip was because every time I set up the beam complete strangers wanted to come over and touch it, i guess they had nothing better to do. One woman asked me if I had come to improve her recption from a (illegal) deflector system. I'll definitely be back in 43/44/54 as I love it on the island of achill.

Hi Guys, Just got back home so I will download the log and give a full report. It was very heart warming to read all those kind words. Just for a bit of fun can all the stations who now have all EI grids e mail me and we will see who was first (unless someone has done this before this weekend) ON4ANT is a likely suspeect but BO SM7 is also a candidate and representing France is F8OP. Could someone help me with a suggested QSL route to UT5JCW whom I worked yesterday .Serge tried to give me the information but it got lost in the QRM.
Yesterday was very good here in IO88KK with contacts to YO,HB,I,IT9,GJ,G,F ES, LY,DL Sp and several SM7s as well as OD5SX , UT5JCW and 9J2BO for my first African mainland station.
I have also sent all QSL cards from my /P trip to IO78 last month

RE;G3IBI. This guy must have been on the beach during all X-flares this cycle and lost some of the grey stuff in his head. Why did he activated the grid in the first place and who is he to judge over any power or antenna used by others? And what is this bogus about QSL-ing just some stations he worked? Only one word for this: Discrimination! What's next? No QSL if you don't mention your shoesize? I will not let a tear for this guy if he wants to leave six. BTW someone inform him that six is VHF! Worth my 2 cents....

said I think without a callsign we cannot say " Well what do you expect from that guy or so on and
so on ." QSLing is getting to be a business for some , and sending cards for new counties is getting

Peter, I dont think "we" have lost the plot, but the chap who sent you the note certainly has.
If he has a grievance with certain individuals (locally?) then he should address that as a seperate issue and not punish the very stations he calls the "minnows" who he feels are the more deserving. Poor argument I thought.

Peter IBI, there will come a day that every QSO on 50 MHz will get you a penalty. You are not allowed to make a contact with a station from a country you have already worked. You are not allowed to use BIG antennas (HB9CV = max), you are not allowed to use high power ( 10 Watt only), you are not allowed to jam the neighbours PC & radio and TV, you have to keep the family happy!!! Can there be fun on 6? Or do we have to make 220 contacts for 220 DXCC.... Have fun,

For sometime now I have been trying ( unsuccessfully ) to get a QSL card for a qso made on 6 meters 2 years ago . I am not intending to release the station callsign nor do I see it necessary . The station concerned was operating in a rare square and was much in demand and made a number of MS and Es qsos . I recently received the following message from said station in response to a further request for a QSL .
" Hi Peter
As a result of the very poor behaviourof certain QRO stations operating when I was in ?? I have decided not to send any QSL's . I realise that this will disappoint many but the attitude of the same small group whenever any DX
occurs does not occur on VHF/UHF/Microwave. The very high power/and exceptionally large aerials are way beyond all but a very small percentage of amateurs. I have also decided not to make expeditions to several rare squares and not to operate from them ( grids omitted ) on 6mtrs but to put my efforts into Microwave where the real amateur spirit still exists - no jamming , insult swapping , and QRO fone in the CW sections of the band .
Sorry to disappoint you - I may reconsider in sending QSLs to the minnows and not to the sharks.

A good weekend, on Saturday I worked ER,CT and CN as new countries with 145 other
QSO's. All except Said were to Europe. On Sunday I had to do some garden work
even though conditions were similar, but managed to make about 50 European

Worked EI7BMB/P in IO44 tonight, hard going, but we made it in the end HI! (TNX to Tony Moore's persistence!). A4, SU, UB5, FR and 9J in here at good signals today in E's, hrd EX8MLE @ 18:45z on 50.102 for 30 seconds, then he faded....no chance of a qso :-( The band is giving out some good magic!

Re: PA1SIX / DJ3TF: Same on this side. During big openings always some stations that are more than 10 times in the log continue to call me. I will NOT send a card for each QSO. Very sorry. You can say that copy the stations putting a spot in the cluster ou relay on 28.885. Please give a chance to friends that need the station for a new country/grid!. First, calling new DX station with kw+ power on cluster frequency immediately when appeared on cluster, and sending RST report next transmission. I received an e-mail from JR2HCB wanting confirmation of a
qso with me on the afternoon of the 14/6/01 at around the time the SP's etc were working JA on multi-hop E's whilst we had E's to East coast NA. I worked some NA on .115, and then called CQ @ 45deg for a while, and worked an SP, gave him 559 (lots of video qrm). I didn't hear the JA, and can't confirm if his swl report is genuine, but it is feasible that he was calling, and copied the SP's report......has anyone else received any such reports from this chap?......I remember a while ago some pretty ficticious claims for qso's were received from a certain JA HI!....see below....

Talking about unusual prop.patterns, on 13 june at 2200 I was copying a G0 cqing in CW vy weak sig,lasted only few seconds, probably never heard me when I answered back. However this was the first time ever that I have had copy of a UK station in six. Perhaps tomorrow there will be surprises after the M flare of yesterday.

It was a real pleasure to work Tony EI7BMB/p today from IO43,54 & 55 squares. Tony did a great job of activating these squares, and he must have found some good spots as he was workable on his 1/4 vert from two of the three squares. He is camping in IO43 tonight, and will be qrv from there with a yagi tommorrow morning. Later in the day he will qsy to IO44. Keep an eye out on 50.135, or on 50.245 for MS. The EI7BMB/p beacon was keying away today on 50.135, and I
heard Jose EH7KW and others calling, these squares are within my tropo range, but I guess it would be MS or E's for most. I exchanged several mobile phone text messages with Tony, these were really useful, never used SMS for skeds before HI! (Tel:00353862607864). A really FB operation by Tony. Thanks for the new squares, safe journey and good DX to EI7BMB/P.

In spite of "low" solar activity , i noted 111 DXCC this year on the band, (last year 123) not that bad after all,

Yesterday after working I0-stations, suddendly I heard T72EB/A chatting. As I hadn't worked San Marino before
I was anxious to work him. When he finished his QSO I called and got my callsign to third place in the list
that he was making. I had been listening to him for 5 minutes before it was my turn. Anyway 59/59 QSO and
a new country. Also later in the evening LA5QFA from JQ90 was 59 for about 1 hour. He had enormous

I thought this was gonna be a quiet day. How wrong can one be.
The band opened around 16:30z. At 17:13 I logged 9J2BO for
country 72. Also logged T99A (JN93) for a new square. #339.
The band closed around 18:40z. At 20:30 The band was open again to
Northern Norway. LA5QFA (JQ90), LA1YCA (KQ10), SM2HTM (KP07),
OH9MRW (KP46) was booming in. LA7SIX/B, JW7SIX/B and OH9SIX/B
was also heard. No aurora was detected, but several OZ and SM
stations were heard. I worked OZ4VV and heard OH7KM when
beaming to the north. It sounded like auroral-e, so I guess
this must have been some back-scatter to the north. I have made
a recording of OZ4VV that I will put up on my website.

I think I have recovered enough from holding my breath for 30 minutes on Sunday. It was sure a thrill to be involved in the Great Pacific Northwest European Opening of 2001.
If anyone wants to confirm our QSO - please send me some e-mail. My mailing address is 15125 SE Bartell Rd, Boring , OR 97009 if anyone needs a QSL card. I am not real big on collecting cards on six - but I am happy to answer 100 percent.
As reported by others on this forum, I was calling CQ on about 50.130 CW (trying to attract some scatter QSOs in Californina), but I also had a beam on VE6 (there was an opening up in that direction). I was using a stackmatch - which allowed me to use more than one antenna at a time.
DF9CY called me clear as day - but I couldn't believe it. I sent a question mark and he answered again. What followed was a 30 minute opening with 13 stations put into the log. I was dealing with a lot of local SSB QRM, so I initially tried QSYin to .110. I called a few CQs there, but had no response. I returned to .130 and worked a couple guys, and then announced QSY .105. The pile of stations followed me.
I think I was pretty weak as I had a hard time working people calling. I tried to get people to go up a bit, and that did help. A few stations almost made it in the log and then disappeared. I think I was really close to getting PA7FM, but he faded out and I had to settle for PA7MM. I am sorry for using grid sqaures instead of RST as an exchange - but I was engaged in the VHF contest and wanted the QSOs to could for that.
This was like many openings that I have worked on 160 meters in the past. In fact, I have worked Tony, GW4VEQ, on both bands now.
I am sorry I couldn't put more guys into the log. Hopefully, now that we know this opening is possible, we will be able to enjoy another one sometime soon.
The antenna I was using was a 7 element beam on a 11.2 meter boom up at 14 meters. I had another antenna at 29 meters which was not as effective for this opening. The signals were best at 30 degrees - which is the normal path for working Europe on HF. The signals sounded very clear - no aurora buzz or flutter. I turned on my tape recorder, but the input wasn't hooked up to the right source and I only have 30 minutes of blank tape.
Power output is 1500 watts and I have worked SM7BAE off the moon. BTW - if anyone in Europe wants to try an EME sked, I would be happy to try.

Re W7EW. Hey Lew, you didn't see me writing THAT down ! It's always better to cq than wait till luck strikes (or hell freezes over). The point I just want to make is that us EU's have absolutely nothing to look for into your direction. During last cycle, at a much better qth, I started the cq-machine on .110 and let it run for hours every time that the TF, OX or LA7SIX beacon popped up. No luck then, but one day it will happen. For you guys, you have the video to look for, if you hear anything out of the EU direction just announce it on the cluster and I'm sure that a load of amp's will be switched on to warm up the tubes at this end. We EU's want to work the westcoast+Al. I'm sure it is possible on a more frequent basis than we've seen since we arrived on the band (1/14 years). If you do not announce the video, providing you can hear it, no one will look much further north. Remember, from here to anything east of the line W5-VE3 is easy, west of that just is a nightmare. No activity in the central W/VE states/provinces makes the detection of a shifting opening impossible. VE8BY/b is heard in EU quite often, but never any station. This opening was just detected thanks to a DL who happened to swing his beam over north and a W7 who by coincidence was beaming at VE7. Without this coincedence we just would have never known. It can be awfully frustrating to listen to a beacon and never hear a station to work, but it still beats listening to the noise and hear nothing at all.

Limited QRP operation in TF:
I'll be on a camping holiday in Iceland (TF/G4PCS/P) from 30th June to 12th July inclusive. I'll be travelling each day, and over the holiday will go through quite a few squares, with GPS for accuracy. Radio time is going to be VERY limited (due to holiday schedule and limited power availability), and also VERY QRP (FT817 on internal battery power, 6m dipole). Please don't be upset if I'm not heard at all... it's a real possibility! Best bet for a contact is if there's propagation during TF evening time, after the day's camp is established :)
Having just one contact would make my day!

RE: PA1SIX Hi Peter, Let me understand this better. You're suggesting that by actually calling toward DX when there are Es clouds floating about it won't increase the chances of detecting an opening? Your post noting there were few if any indicators of an opening suggests that we all should be calling with great vigor to find these openings rather than looking for indicators as you suggest. No one was "sleeping" over here before or after the opening...we were operating..looking for DX, which is what I'm advocating.
The current "in the box" mythology suggests we should look for beacons to ascertain whether the band is open in particular directions. The beacons have their places, but its fallacy to believe the band dead when no beacons are heard. We do listen for the big power beacons and query the East Coast guys regularly about such events. Simply having such powerful "beacons" such as existing on 48.235-48-265 and 49.735-49.765 mean little if the zone of propagation leaves the signals out of the bounce from the clouds, which I think happens frequently from W7 land.
A prime example is NN7J, 35 miles to my north in CN85 who worked into EU with 75 watts. I was calling with 1500 watts but was out of the zone of propagation..so no Q for me...!
Another example was last evening here. A surge of strong Es between W6 and W7 with a dash of XE thrown in for spice. I started calling for JA based on whim and experience. I was rewarded with a Q with JG2BRI. 45 minutes later the JA's rolled in strongly and dozens of Q's were made. No official indicators..such as a preceding opening up into KL7 etc. were there...but the band was open.
I'm suggesting to think outside of the box and to simply be Operators rather than SWL's when there are Es clouds afoot. We shall discover many new paths or perhaps postulate new propagation modes for this most excellent of bands.
So again I urge all serious 6M Operators: When there are Es clouds about..Get on and Transmit! Swing that beam out our way and call. Don't let the presence/absence of beacons dissuade you from calling....because we will be doing the same thing from over here! It works frequently with our JA friends...it should work for our European compatriots.

Congratulations to all the Eu stations having had qsos with W7/VE7. Especially congrats to those in the Pacific Northwest of NA . This area is the true "black hole" of NA .Speaking, of course, about 6m propagation only, hi!

Somewhere I read - and this is abt 2 years ago - on a power transmitter in KL7 for aurora research just below
50.000 MHz. I have lost the exact frequency. So does anyone know it ? I have received a strong fluttery signal
a few times from QTF350° around 49.980 MHz and 10m was open to KH6 and/or KL7 from Northern DL at that time.
Some more higher power beacons in W7, VE7, VE6 and KL7 would certainly help to detect openings, BUT who will
build it and more: wo will operate it in the non-populated VE7, KL7 area ? It seems to me very likely, that there happen
multi-hop openings like last sunday. We occasionally see this from EU to JA. But in this case JA is a bit more populated
than VE7 or KL7. At least - this shows that opening from sunday - we all should keep our "ears" open.

RE:W7EW. That doesn't increase the chance of detecting an opening much Lew. For us EU's there are not many early warning signs to see an opening coming. The only ones in your direction are the OX beacons and VE8BY/b. Neiter of them were heard before or during the event. For you guys, you must have been "sleeping". The 48.250 video must have been real loud before it opened. Please start monitoring 48.235~48.265 and 49.735~49.765, there you have some big power beacons !

A small report from JP50:
Came home on sunday from the Scandinavian VUSHF meeting in SM6.
It was very nice to meet many of the radioamateurs I've worked
on 6M and 2M. Also gave PA5DD (Hi Uffe) and OH3NWQ (Hi Vesa)
a new one confirmed on 6M. On June 10 I worked JY9NX for the first
time this year. I also worked 9A3FT (JN82) and CT1DIN (IN60) for
two new squares. Heard many stations, but worked them before.
On June 11 I worked RW0IW/3 (LN09) for a new square. Also
heard UR4LL (KO70) and EH3AXV (JN01). Would have been
2 new squares. Also been hearing EA3VHF/B very much, but not
much activity from EH3 :-(

It appears the recent Euro-VE7/W7 opening was Es. I suspect that this path is open much more than what we find. The clues are few, but when there seems to be a lot of Es clouds about we need signals being directed toward each other to find out if the band is indeed open. We were in the midst of a VHF QSO party when k7rat's signal was detected in DL on SSB while k7rat was trying to work a VE6..which is about 30-45 degree from the West coast..which coincides with all you fine 6M miscreants in Europe.
Next time there seems to be several clouds of Es about, just beam 330 degrees or so and give several calls our way on 50100=50110 or so. We'll be doing the same. Thats how we get into JA..which would appear to be the same number of hops on 6M Es.

Contest weekend.. hmm, worked a score of 1080 total.. Thanks to the 18 contacts . Just as the band started to open towards IK.
I have someone local to me who has a TV set with a Bad IF screen switch it on. Total 5/9++ from below 50.000 right up through to 50.600
Nothing but Wide band Audio. complete 360' coverage. That was the end for me.. Just wish I could clear this noise.. DTI usuall problem. "Your Amature so put up with it"
and the person with the TV never answers the door
Anyway It was fun!! Wonder if anyone has thought about doing a contest for UKSMG over a 7 day period.. could be fun??

Tim G4DBl: I know of plenty of great, noise free locations on Fuerteventura and Lanzarotte. We will be there again in November. Just one little problem - operation on 6m is not legal for visitors! So, I don't take my rig - wouldn't want to be tempted by what I hear on my scanner. Perhaps one day soon all EA hams will be able to operate without special permit, then maybe visitors as well. What a day yesterday ! Great hearing so many U.S. - even I could not work them. May be some 15 dB more could have done
the job. "Hi-lite" was indeed - as I wrote already yesterday - the short opening to K7 area (Oregon) and VE7 (Vancouver Island - I believe),
which made me literally falling off my chair.
This was already the 6th time this year, I could read NA stations.
After all I picked up PY2(VA, HN, XB) all from GG66 and heard a lousy strong PY5CC working into OH, SM and Baltic Countries. What a mess

After the 3th opening to HK4SAN today, propagation shifted to centro america, TI5KD/2 EK80 a new odx for me in Eskip.
he peaked 599 for a moment, long enough for a QSO.
USA (W4) in as well, but they didn't copy N.EU too well due to contest QRM... wonder if TI was a 5 hop opening ? its well over 8500 km

Hi Dennis - UKSMG contest - Es started here about 40 minutes before the end. Why not copy an idea from some of the HF contests ? Make the contest 48hrs long, but you can operate a maximum of 24hrs, minimum 'off' times 1hr ? This might help more people catch openings at differing times. No HK4 here, only noise, noise and QRN ! 73

THE MOROKULIEN LG5LG ON SIX(JO69CW): In the end of march 2001 (31th)there was a activation on six with this unusal
callsign and of course it was popular.The qsl info was said

Big surprise: VK6JQ 539 into JN58 in June! Bill called CQ and came back with 529. At that time only MS on the band and weak RTTY QRM from UX0FF. Maybe a meteor helped VK6JQ lengthen his TEP+F2 path into EU. He was there for 2 minutes. 73

Unfortunatly, I can appreciate all the problems
encountered by the JW0PK team.
As one of the six meter ops on the JW7M expedition
last summer, I can say from experience that logistics
took precedence over all other means. From the flight
to Longyear, to the ship to Barentsberg, to the boat to
Ice Lake, to the trek thru the mountains, and then
for six days with no power or running water.......
Not to mention the acquisition of Petrol from the Russians,
or running dangerously low on coal, and wondering if
the Sikorsky would be picking us up or not?
It was an experience to say the least. The North
is a beautiful place.

I agree with Kerry's statement, I think that 6m is being taken a lot more seriously in the last year or two on Major or Minor DX'peditions, thanks to a lot of dedicated 6m die-hards, At the end of the day any 6m activity is better than none at all, as Mike said a lot of us have 6m in our blood, we need to infiltrate the Large DX'pediton groups and “plant the 6m seed and watch it grow”, (This is by far the saddest statement I have ever made), just putting on my Anorak and going out to spot a few trains !. re: JW. I saw several cluster announcements re: troubles
early on wid the expedition. Something about someone taking
the 6m keyer, etc. Then later, someone hearing the JW7SIX/B
but had to "convince" the 20m SSB op to get someone on 6m.
From personal experience I realize how important 6m is on an
expedition, especially if you ANNOUNCE you are taking 6m with you. IMHO, it should be the first and last band to come down, and should have a keyer running as long as you
are able to get to the rig. (on CY0/CY9 we shut it off for
a few hours very late @ night so we could sleep) That's only my opinion. However, on the flip side at least some did
manage to work JW that wouldn't have otherwise done it.
From what I could tell from this end (watching the cluster mostly and the Internet) it wasn't much different than 90%
of the other dxpeditions that are "HF + 6m"....IE: NOT 100%
full bore, killer instinct, gotta make 6m contacts no matter what, 24 hours a day" type of expedition. For people
NOT to be dissapointed, you need someone who has 6m in their
blood, and eats, breaths and sleeps the band.....otherwise
, lots of complaining. Thanks for gg to JW guys! Just wish

JW0PK: What a laugh ! Announcing a ten days operation, and then tearing down the 6m antenna after 6 days. That's 60% performance. (In any case, the 6m antenna should always be the LAST one to tear down). As a UKSMG member I do not feel treated right by such performance. I do not know whether the UKSMG has already transfered the sponsoring money, but I suggest we sponsor up to the same level: 60 % of the original promise.

Thanks for all the suggestions a while back as to what logging software to use for my trip to VP9, have currently narrowed it down to Winlog32 and Fastlog, both V good, as an aside, I wonder if anyone has come across any logging software for Linux, I use Linux probably more than Windoze so it would make sense to port my logs to Linux instead, 5 weeks to go to VP9...

Re Clusters: Packet radio is just bad in PA. To many sysops with great ego's and mail boxes...But telnet does fine. So get a cable connection and go ahead with the great DX-telnet software. We had a little problem the last weekend when EA7URC was corrupted, but was fixed in short time. And there are some other good clusters out there.
Like SV1AAW, IK5PWJ etc. Good luck and 73,

Most clusters are running slower due to the high volume of useless spots. For example "DX 50.000 ABC123 Nice to work you on 6" or "nothing in io91" ..

Hi Michael. It seems to me its a PA problem only. The only cluster I can connect here is PI8DXC (by 5 hops!!) The cluster itself isn't the problem here but the way to get there. Seems to me the packetnetwork in PA is close to death. I've 3 nodes close to me (PI1RNI, PI1UTR, PI1WNO) and just can connect 1 clx. Time to get some ADSL over here..hi

Just finished final adjustment of single GI7b tube PA. Very interesting results - 10W of driving power produced 300W of output! Full output was close to 550W, but with usual 13 dB of power gain. Doubled 1000V AC for plate voltage. Design was basically described by G3MY earlier on these pages. 73!

VE1VAS is operational on 6M from GN06 grid.This is the Marconi Historical Site in Glace Bay,Nova Scotia.The operators will mostly use CW as Jim and Billy are CW operators by preference! The station consists of a Yaesu FT726,a Mirage 150W amp and 3 element over 3 element stacked monobanders. I hope to get a 2M amp for them so next year they will use 2M as well as 6M.If you want them to do SSB just tell Jim that David (W1CBI) said he has to!!

Incredible opening last night, 2254 local time worked VK6JQ (PH12) here in CN84 Oregon, over 13,300 km at bearing of 274 degrees. JQ also worked by VE7AGG, K7RAT and several KL7's, from 2230-2330 local time. Must have been multi-hop Es linking into ??? across the Pacific. VK8 also heard. 49.750 asian video in weak last two nights, also watching that path.

I Think we got a lot of happy six meter operators since yesterday evening. I managed to work JW in spite of a 'well known' PA3 who kept calling on top of JW0PK, on top of the opposite station, when he was not called by JW0PK and even when he was in the log he was still making it impossible for others to work or copy the station. I recorded some audio files and they can be listened to from the "Latest DX into PA" page on my site. For those who don't know the URL it's http://come.to/six . There are now 3 files available but I will upload a few more which I received from Tjerry, PB0ANX. Those to come should have better quality as he rx-ed him much better. Re your notes about possible doughnut effect on TEP + Es, I suspect something similar happens here when it is to ZS. Often hear EH7s etc working ZSs and ALSO hear Gs working the ZSs via the Es, but no ZS signal reaches me despite the Es path, just goes over my head. I reckon I must be in the hole. I seem to be too far north to get into the TEP direct, but too far south to get a good Es link. Okay, it doesn't ALWAYS happen that way, but often enough to be more than just Murphy's Law, I reckon..... ps the contest was a total washout. Hope the UKSMG Organising Committee can get us better propagation next weekend, hi hi. 73

I saw some cluster announcements there was some kind of
difficulties with the 6m stn..(??) I know I2ADN a gud 6m op
so we hope to hear him on. Late night Es/Au-Es has been observed here the past few days into VE8/OX etc. In fact
just moments ago the band was suddenly open to VO1 and EA7
at the same time via multi-Es. Please, if you work them, tell them not to forget NA. Many of us stay up very late
and even leave our rigs on all night looking for the "rare"]
one. I presume "50.145" seems to be "IT". 73 de Mike and the

And it happend again. After the contest the propagation did switch in DX-mode again and we got 7Q7, 9J2, 4X, JY and JW0PK for a new one...YES, BINGO and WHOOPIE's could be seen on the cluster and did express my feelings the right way. DXCC #170! And as a little present JW/OK1FBH after all.

Hi - I wonder whether anyone in Northern Europe shares my observations about the Sporadic Es 'doughnut effect' interacting with the TEP path to South America. I have been monitoring Peter's (PY5CC) QSO's into Northern Europe. Conventional wisdom is that an Es bridge to the TEP 'take off' area is required on this path. From my QTH in North East England propagation to PY is exceptionally rare indeed and it has been noticable that there have been many hours of openings between the south and midlands of England(sometimes as little as 150 km south of here) and PY and also (but for much less time) from LA/SM/OH to PY (for instance LA7QIA tonight. I guess that my conclusion is that this QTH is in the doughnut between a 1xEs hop (example southern G) and a 2xEs hop (example LA/SM) to the TEP take off area to SAm. Any thoughts from propagation watchers? 73

Not much sporadic E in IO53 around for the contest but I made some nice troposcatter QSOs with PA6M(985kms),ON4ANT(977kms) and F6IFR(881kms) over a difficult path. Exchanging serial and locator both ways made it even harder !! Thanks for their patience

Cunning idea by N1RZ. I've been playing around with SE-PROP for a while, typing in data from cluster spots, trying to figure out where that darn Es cloud is moving and where to can we expect condx. Usefull program that lacks features (maybe registered version doesn't?), now provided by N1RZ. Great indeed!

interesting on the ranger 2950 clone for 6m, i wonder if the switches behind the function buttons on the front panel will still fail quickly like the ones on the 2950 10m radio did , and the radio starts scanning on its own and wont stop.
maybe ranger will give out spare switch modules with new radios , or have they now sorted out the problems ??.

season off to a strange start here. I've missed a lot
of DX as the openings have been mostly daytime (to EU).
Also as usual, we are seeing much less Es than W1/W2 (only worse this year from here in FN65). Nonetheless, I look fwd to hearing 3A,T7,HV0,OH,and anything east of SP. 73 to all 6m fanatics. de VE9AA

Seing the good outcome of the HC8N affair, I also have a grief to air > 9 years ago I worked FO0CI in Clipperton, the man at the mike, Arie PA3DUU told me once in 20 mts he did remember the qso , which was a difficult one in BS, XQ3SIX was in the freq. and pronounced it GOOD CONTACT. However the manager said YOU ARE NOT IN LOG and all my efforts(e mails to PA3DUU, qsps via other PAs) have failed to get Arie to drop a line to the mgr saying YES I remember that qso. Anyone can give me a hand?

A era comes to an end ! At the 31 st. of May, I (and others) recived an email from Arne SM7AED, saying; "Dear friends, Thanks for all info you have sent me. May 31. Final issue. Thanks for watching. Have a nice summer. 73 Arne SM7AED" I think it´s only on place to thanks Arne for his effort over the years, bringing first a exelent newsletter and later a fine newspage at the internet. Personally I will miss the the fine service Arne provided, as Arne also covered many non-DX topics, but still band related information in his newsletter. Arne for what ever reason You stopped, You must know Your service will be missed by many. What a boring day on 6M. Only interesting thing was a big signal
from LA5QFA in JQ90. I did hear LA5TFA, LA7SIX/B, OH9SIX/B and JW7SIX/B
at the same time. To PY5CC: I wasn't home when you worked LA5UKA, but I
did check the band for any dxcc about half-an-hour before without hearing
anything else than very strong EU signals. I'm hoping for another opening
to work south-america again like I did last year when I worked you :-)
Right now I'm hoping for 3A, but no luck so far.... C U on 6M.

I've missed almost all the fun yesterday. Very frustrating to see all the spots on this page and being unable to leave QRL. When I came home I found the band very noisy here, but no more signals. A little later I was spotted on the cluster bij AA1K. Sorry, couldn't copy you here. Only some very weak traces deep in the noise. A little later (abt 15:25 UTC) I worked W3VIR (419 / 419) and N2LT (519 / 559) just before the band closed here in JO33. Now looking for the West Coast. Still need all the Wild West Squares!

Wild West squares! Sure DM62 and some others has been worked several times with F2 and Es. Most of the well known PA DXers worked famous N5JHV. In the previouse cycle K7NN, some W5's and W7HAH in Montana has been contacted. K6MYC and K6QXY were worked of the moon. 73's>

I received some good news that Jon, N0JK had a copy of the HC8N log that was sent to him previously. What a stroke of good luck and good foresite by Jon! Many of the gaps that I reported in previous posting have been filled, so it looks hopeful, particularly for Six Meter contacts of 11/25/00 with HC8N. Should be able to resend in about a week. Ray. PA4PA - In answer to your question; PA has been worked many times from DM62, New Mexico and also I believe from DM41, DM43 in Arizona. I don't think it has ever been worked from W6. Yestersay was just one of those days when the skip bounced all around me but not on me. But it sure looks like gonna be a great e-season in spite of that old wives's tale that Es are lousy around solar peak! CU soon.

Great day yesterday to NA. Worked a few new gids but the thing i liked i was hrd in DM79. I emailed Dave, WD5COV and got this reply from him.

No joke Ray I heard you. The first time I have ever hear Europe on 6 mtrs. I
could not hear the VE station but I called you and I guess you could not hear
me. I was amazed ! Here rig is FT-920 and 5el at 65ft. I was beaming due east
at the time trying to hear the east coast. No luck there. I did not have time
to record your signal. There was QSB but had you in for several minutes just
above the noise level and peaking S3. Wonder what you run there Ray?

The Es in the past weeks has had my DXCC count surge. Now up to #69. Still need some tricky ones like France :-). Yesterday was good for more than 30 W/VE.

Avelino. EH8BPX, had a big evening into NA. He was very workable here for many hours. He was able to work deep into the Southwest USA. DM43 square was worked as well as several others in that field. Congrats my friend!

TO LA8AJA and other LA stations - Congratulations for the nice Europeans contacts. Today we had a good opening to Scadinavia area. I heard several LA stations but they were so busy working european stations and didn't copy me ( 2 X 11 Elements + 1 KW ). The only one in the log is LA5UKA in JO59. I work him after calling for many minutes, hi, hi. Work several SM stations. Try to listen for stations out side Europe also sometimes. 73s and see you soon.

Regarding my "testing" of OnDigital decoders I forgot to mention that the same results were obtained running 400 Watts with a 5 element prong some 30 or 40ft away from the TV receiving aerial. I know the 100 Watts at 4ft borders on "cruelty" to these poor little devils but it does show that with the Pace decoder you should have no problems RF wise.
