This seems to be a EU thing. Why do people say "tnx for the QSL" on the OH DX Summit? eg; IW9--- 50000.0 ZD8SIX tnx chris 2day rcvd qsl 2019 30 Jan 2001. WHY? This is not the appropriate forum. This announcement page is probably a better choice if you MUST announce it!

UK STATIONS This may be of interest to you.I have just done some EMC tests with two Ondigital TV decoders. The first was a Pace model DTR 730-IM and the second a Nokia 9850T. With 100 Watts at 3ft from the TV aerial the Nokia picture locked up but the Pace was unaffected. With my mast at full height giving around 20ft between beam and TV aerial both okay. When the power was upped to give 400 Watts input to beam the Nokia picture again locked up but the Pace was clear. A simple high-pass filter cured the Nokia in all both cases. However if you are going Ondigital go for the Pace and try to guide your neighbours that way too! If it is too late and you or they own the Nokia the high-pass filter is all that is needed for interference free reception.
If you are encountering problems then please let me know and I may be able to advise you. You must however be using a single length of CT100 coax or better with a good quality balunised TV aerial and have the coaxial plug correctly fitted with a soldered centre pin.....nothing less will do for trouble free reception. Ondigital is very prone to wide band interference such as arching thermostats in heating systems and household appliances so good installations are a must.So is fixing that arching light switch or thermostat!
Good luck

I received a letter from Australia Post who have intercepted some overseas QSL mail sent by me recently. So,please be advised when sending QSL cards to Australia that you do NOT use Australian DOMESTIC postage stamps on your SAE as return postage. Under the new tax system Australia now has separate stamps for DOMESTIC and INTERNATIONAL postage. So make sure, if you send Australian stamps to cover return postage, that they are INTERNATIONAL Australian stamps. These are identified with the words "International" printed in blue on the left of the stamp. Australia Post says it will return mail (to sender in VK) for overseas destinations if they have domestic stamps affixed...in other words we will have to pick up the costs...73 de Jack.

Pity it all happened again that northern EU can't break the I-wall. Even spotting the ZS's at the DXclusters by a number of northern EU's doesn't seem to help. Anyway it was fun hearing some DX again. Not bad at all hearing 3C, ZS and TR in one hour of propagation. 3C5I/b was strongest around 10.45Z with a big 599. 73's all,

Hi everyone, just wanted to tell all the "Sixers" that a friend I will
be on Nuie Island from 18 March until 6 April. We have no special
antenna for 6m, but the extended G5RV does a good job there! So, maybe
there will be some contacts (I hope so). Please check 50.118 from time
to time. We will be there with our IC 706 in times when shortwave is
too crowded or there is no traffic. In 1999 we had a QSO to TI5KD, and
we heard several beacons from KH6, VK and ZL. The call will be ZK2GEO
again, and I'm the QSL manager. Bureau cards are welcome and will be
processed in order of receiving.

- Friday, January 26, 2001 at 22:23:02 (GMT/BST)
The most recent SSN (smoothed sunspot number) data for Cycle 23
indicates we may be seeing the peak of Cycle 23. The last four
month's of data (March, April, May, and June 2000) shows the SSN to
be hovering around 120. Only time will tell if this is just a
plateau toward a slightly higher peak or indeed it's the peak.
Historically the SSN of a solar cycle of this magnitude will remain
somewhat constant for a couple more years (as Cycle 20 did). So
take advantage of the excellent worldwide propagation opportunities
on the higher bands--15, 12 and 10 meters--while you can.

Hi all, apart from a very little Es and some petit Aurora, there has been nothing good since 30-Dec. In the quite time, I did some comparing of cycles. The NA path (only VE and US openings) opened 23 days detween Oct-00 and Dec-00, compared with 44 days in the same period in cycle 22. With a better antenna and much higher power this time around, IMHO the current cycle is very poor.

VALID BEGINNING AT: 21:00 UTC ON 22 JANUARY
A fairly high velocity coronal mass ejection was observed on 20 January. It has been determined that this disturbance may have sufficient energy to produce periods of auroral activity that may be observed into the middle latitudes under dark skies. The shock front from the disturbance should reach the Earth over the next several hours (by early in the UTC day of 23 January). Observers should keep an eye out for possible periods of favorable auroral activity. The near-new phase of the moon will provide optimal dark-sky observing conditions for all regions world-wide. ACTIVITY *MAY* ALSO BE OBSERVED APPROXIMATELY NORTH OF A LINE FROM...IRELAND AND ENGLAND TO EXTREME NORTHERN EUROPE ROUGHLY NORTH OF A LINE FROM NORTHERN NETHERLANDS TO NORTHERN GERMANY TO NORTHERN POLAND TO NORTHERN BELARUS TO NORTHERN RUSSIA (Source Solar Terrestrial Dispatch)

Hi everyone,
Hope I'm not missing too much choice DX whilst I'm cruising around South America. Currently in Rio and all I hear on the band is PY1AA - alas, I have no TX so no 6m activity. Can occasionally be found on HF (18/21/28MHz)as MU5MUF/mm, next activity after 29 Jan all being well. Back home to 6m, Europe and cold weather in March. Save some DX for me, please!

When regulations in Belgium are publiced, the 200 Watts are on special request. Output will be 50 watts instead of 30 Watts. Think this will be 50 watts (+3dB ofcourse). So let's hope for a quick publication.

As described in the last belgian rules projet the output power allowed on 50 MHz in Belgium will be 50 watts (30 watts until now). ON REQUEST the HAM would be allowed to use 200 watts. The station may be able to deliver 3 db more but of course in any case the maximum power (after request) must be limited to 200 watts. We are waiting the publication of the new regulation to have the confirmation. Best 73s.

Mike VE9AA - choosing a QTH - I would suggest choosing a QTH which is good for HF - not always the same as the best QTH for 6m, but it should be good for both - about 300-400' above sea level, within a mile or two of the sea/ocean, with good take-off in all directions if possible. 6m will unfortunately fizzle out, but HF, especially 20m, will keep you busy during the sunspot minimum ! 73 GL

PS, Right or wrong, its not about TVI or Hi Fi RFI its about exposure to yet to be proven harmful doses of non-ionising radiation. Who wants to be the first legal case to have to defend that? Our position is indefensible if we don't comply, no matter what we all think. For my money the VK3SIX site 17 kM out in the bush and 1.5 kilometers from nearest farm house cost about two weeks of solicitors/barister fees. hi.

Andrea IK5QLO see http://www.datafast.net.au/4217 re Australian EMR laws to be activated this year. Also as US amateur I had to comply with voluntary and compulsory EMR rules. Do you think many 6M and HF hams have the credibility to be trusted to do it without legislation? HM guys do you know who openly run over legal power limits? Hysteria or otherwise, who wants a civil law suit? There is now NO 6M EME in VK cos no matter how you try to cook the books, 1kW and 12 db at any height below 30 metres exposes neighbors to excessive emr fields according to the radio police.

zero feet separation here is the norm where a 2 bedroom house starts at gbp 250,000 or $400,000 (with a postage
stamp garden). As for EMC, I live in the middle of what
seems like a thousand computers with S9 noise. Don't even
start me on the planning laws, even the UK is utopia compared with the killjoys over here (unless it's a golf
course, in which case do what you want!). 73 de

HELP! ADVICE SOUGHT! Looking for a bit of advice on antenna location and TVI. I realize of lot of EU's have small plots of land they live on
so this is taken into consideration when I ask this: "I am thinking of moving, to a larger plot, higher ground, and installing taller 6m antennas. I am thinking of maybe 80'-100' tower, with 11/11 at the top and hopefully eventually running 1kW++. What do you feel is the minimum distance I should be from closest neighbours house?" I have heard
that it is more important to get the 6m antenna HIGH than
far away from them. Current situation is not working. I am 200' away from closest neighbor and antennas are 35'/49'
EU is on a direct path from their livingroom and TV/STEREO.
No amount of education/talk, etc. will help my situation.
Other neighbors in 500'++ distance report little or no RFI
except to 49MHz phones and baby monitors. RFI is less if I run CW, which is basically 90% of the time anyway. No RFI
on HF, even though I run 1200w and big TH6DXX yagi there.
Has anyone run high power/big 6m antennas and survived with neigbours? This is very important to me (you can't imagine-or maybe u can), so I would appreciate all comments. I am thinking I might stand a better chance if I can stay 1000' away from nearest TV/STEREO/TELEPHONE/TOASTER etc. whan I move(hi) This hopefully will be some kind of small hilltop
QTH with most neighbors below antennas.
Thanks...Mike (help!)

Re: D68, Peter, among the personal cirscuntances (their idea was to do it in October, as the pasts to 8Q, XE, FM and VP2M), this dxp was and it is not intended to be a 6 meters dedicated one. Josep and Nuria (who are not SIXers) added 50 Mhz to the operation schedule due to the many requests. Re QSL policy - provided nobody's being dishonest (ie hoarding the green stamps they get with incoming cards), then surely it's a matter of personal preference - If I choose to reply to cards via carrier pigeon, then everyone who wants a card from me had better have a pigeon loft! M0BCG - nice idea, returning the postage - would you like to be my QSL manager, at your own expense of course.... green stamps extracted from incoming cards fully cover the cost of return postage for those cards, with a little extra to put towards printing and bureau postage. If I was in it for the money I'd have given up a long time ago. QSLing is a necessary part of running an expedition station, one which I have no problem doing (especially since I have a manager to do all the hard work), but economics dictate that contributions are collected and used to defray the not inconsiderable costs. PS 9M6BAA will be QRV again late March / early April.

A few thoughts on QSLs. An IRC now costs over $1, both
currently cover the cost of an airmail QSL though. Airmail
in Jersey is up to 10 grams at the cheapest rate, big thick
envelopes and a heavy card soon add up in weight. I had a
belgian manager who could not send my outgoing cards via
his buro (but could receive them), he had to send them to me, so that I could send them on. EQSLs seem to be the
future for non-award cards, my log is now online for those
who'd like a confirmation, but don't want to wait for the
buro, and think that the QSO warrants a direct card. There
is a guy in the US who sells stamps from all over the world
(I've been sent some from 1972 on a recent QSL!), just make
sure that the amount and type is correct. UK stamps are not
valid in GU, GJ or GD. Latest GJ postal rates can be found
at www.jerseypost.com. 73 es CU on 6

Postage just went up here in Canada. Now $1.05 international air. No surface rate here. To the US it's now 60c. Most have been great sending IRC or green stamp. OK, to clear up a miss understanding: QSL cards i deal with as listed below are exchanged direct because that is the way i wish to deal with cards that "i" do not want. So, why do i do it? Simple, if i didn't, no one would receive any from those stations, direct or other wise. It has nothing to do with the RSGB buro, or being a member of the RSGB. Anyone who asks for QSL information when working any of the said stations is told that QSL is ok, but direct only, and via me. Anyone who sends via the buro will have his card sitting in the home of the GD buro manager for 6 months before he destroys them. 73 de

After-thought re national organizations: If a qsl mgr can't forward cards through the outgoing bureau, let your representative know this is NOT acceptable. After all, they are supposed to service their amateur community, not give them a difficult time. Let them know there is more to it than selling advertising in their publication!

Re direct QSLing: Sorry I did not know there are societies which don’t let their member QSL managers send out QSLs. If so, something wrong. QSLing to outside EU with 2 USD green stamps is 3.45 USD total cost over here. But I would certainly send my QSL to a 4W6 directly, everyone knows that they have no bureau. But I would never spend 3.45 USD to get a locator confirmed. 73

Now you've got it, Steve! If your national organization doesn't work correctly, turn the job over to someone in another land where the bureau DOES work the way it should. All mgrs need to service bureau requests, purely and simply. If they can't or won't, don't take on the task.

Where does it say that QSL managers have to qsl via bureau or else? What qsl bureaus? 4W6? There is none, individual postings to all the individual bureaus? You guys are unreal, you expect the DX station to be around 24 hours a day, qsl in 7 days, do it for nothing, and you complain when it doesn't meet your criteria. Be thankful someone takes on the thankless qsl duties, or you may wait from 1 to 5 years for a card. I do not send out 4W6 cards via any bureau. The VK bureau disallows, it. I cant send VK3SIX cards to ARRL even though I am a life member, only KL7SIX. I suggest you acquaint yourselves with all the facts before you scare those reputable managers away.

Hello Tom, and others. I understand what you're saying, but i have to agree with Stefano/I0WTD. I deal with cards for GD4IOM, MD0V, MD6V, MD8V and GD0EMG. All are direct only. Stefano has his reasons, and i have mine. But the subject of Direct only, or Buro only, does not have a place in the "code of practice" 73 de

Re OD5SB / I0WTD: Isn’t it much easier for a QSL manager to answer a QSL via the bureau? No opening and sealing envelopes, etc. Printing cost can be covered by the money left from the 1 or 2 USD per card that you will get directly. So why do you want to answer direct cards only? It is my opinion that it should be added to the Code of Practice for 6m Operators that they should QSL via the bureau. (I know some operators are no members of e.g. RSGB, but think joining a club is much much cheaper than sending 50 QSLs directly per year) 73

4U1UN on 6 Meters
On Wed Jan 3rd Fritz DL4TT, Ken WB2AMU & I visited 4U1UN to assess their 6 meter prospects. They do not have a 6m radio or antenna but Ken was able to use their multi-band dipole with his FT690 to make at least 1 cw 6m contact with Mario K2ZD. The location is quite noisy but it's on the 40th floor on the top of the UN building so location seems ideal for VHF/UHF if we can overcome the noise. We hope to get a 6m radio for them & at least a small fixed yagi on the roof for starters to give them a feel for 6m operations. We'll let you know about future operations. Dave K2SIX

As QSL manager of OD5SB (Rami) I start now receiving a
consistent number of requests via the Bureau Office.
Just to avoid disillusions, I would like to point out
that my committment with Rami for a consistent service is
for direct traffic only. Responses via the bureau are
currently provided on a best effort basis only, and maily
for DX stations and VHF frequencies. This may change in
the future, depending on the traffic load. Should you need
any clarification, you may contact me at my e-mail address.
Thank you for your understanding and HNY.

To those of you plagued by computer birdies on VHF...
After having suffered from a really annoying one on 50115, I was made aware of an option present in most high-speed PC BIOSes: Spread Spectrum!
Alledgedly it does the same to the PC's clock, that it does to radio transmissions of the same ilk: frequency hopping around the center frequency. It's not there to help plagued HAMs - at least not directly, but make the passing of FCCs emission standard easier, by spreading it out instead of having it all on one particular frequency.
To cut a long story short: enabling spread spectrum in my BIOS, completely obliterated the birdie, and with no apparent negative side effects.
Good luck hunting your problems...

RE FP Operation: I certainly hope that if such an operation is planned that it won't hold our 50.110 internationl calling frequency hostage like the last one. With such a rare country and the technology of instantly spotting these operations I have my fingers crossed. FP is TROPO RANGE here and the 60/S9 piles on .110 for hours on end destroy any possibility of "window DX" for me. Best 73 & Gud 6m DX!...
