last night,i think he means 27/28 feb lots of TEP north and south america and also 3C5I not the beacon.
Mike is QRV ON 28.885 to relay info on openings but has no 6m tx capability.
also limited internet access.
I hope to discuss a possible tx capability with him for future trips.
From ME 5u and C5 in to GU well today but no QSOs 10W wont crack the pile ups!!!

Thanks to Jules for giving me FR1AN qsl card today. Also, nice postcard from Reunion Island. Hi. First look on 6m this year to find 5U2K on 50.115 SSB. Bad news is he never identified himself whilst I was listening. Also, on hearing stations calling him he seemed only to give their suffix. Strange operation to say the least. Perhaps tomorrow ww will hear his callsign more often.

In getting more info for my firsts and history pages following has come to light. At least one 3A, if not all 3A's have permission to operate 50.2 - 51.2 100 watts till end of 2001 - experimental licence - so should be more QSO's.

Re DL8HCZ. Johan, noted same difference with PA0OOS last cycle. At that lattitude the scatterdistance to link to the TE zone must be optimal. He (OOS) often heard stuff way b4 us guys in 22 and 21. No doubt he (HCZ) will use plenty of everything, including a big antenna.

Sunday November the 4 th. is the day of the largest amateur rallye/meeting in Denmark, with auktion, flee market and dealer stands, will be held in Odense JO55EI. I have suggested to the arranging EDR branch that I would like to arrange a SIX / VHF meeting at Saturday the 3 rd. They find the idea fine, and have given a go of using the facilities. Now, what I really like to know, within I put at lot of effort into arrangeing such a meeting - would it be interesting and can we expect visitors besides the OZ HAM's ? I really need some feedback here over the next week, feel free to use the adresses; oz6om@qsl.net or AX25 OZ6OM@OZ5BBS If I deside to give it a go, my idea is something like this; Before noon OZ50MHz Group AGM, at noon lunch (with Danish speciality), after noon, two lectures separated by a coffe break, round 18 or 19 oclock we will find a resturant. Comment re the short path interpretations by Six Italy.. to wit...Admitting longer distances due to skewed or long path contacts, would pave the way to arbitrary interpretations on the actual optical path length, which are incompatible with a trophy competition.....be that as it may, failing to give credit for contacts over the half way point is ignoring significant and leading edge work being done on the 6M band by weak signal people over the past ten years since long paths were discovered. Contacts like that made by ZL3TY are at the cutting edge of 6M long distance work and I only hope you get to experience it at least once in your life, beacuse down here thousands of KM from the heavily and closely populated areas, all our F2 DX is long haul DX even JA;s which are 8 to 9000 kM from VK3/ZL3.

DX was about 16000 kM the furthest from ZL this cycle, and quite remarkable given the current solar conditions. The window has now gone until October and was almost identical to the window in 1991/1992 when VK7IK worked into PA0 VK3 to GW3 with ZL3's off the back of our beams asking for a standby to try for the Europeans, date was 17th and 19th of Feb 1992 which is only 9 years ago, so here is hoping for better things to come on the downside of the cycle.

Bob ZL3TY sent me details of the recent significant qso between New Zealand and Cyprus, first ever and first long haul to Europe this cycle. I must say I was disappointed at the total lack of response from the European quarter who are usually so opinionated about propagation, so here is information from Bob for those who are interested...........
The 48 MHz carriers were in from around 0830z, lots of offsets, main ones 48.249.6, 48.249.8, 48.259.4 direction was spread, mainly around 270 deg, quite a different direction from the 49.75s which were around 320 deg
Strength up to about S5
After frequent CQs at 1002z a weak signal came back to my CQs, it took me a while to get his callsign - shock I think, it was quite unexpected and there was lots of QSB. Needless to say I would never have worked him using
SSB. He was in for around 3 mins in and out of the noise, lots of QSB, I gave him xxx, he gave me xxx. There was another signal on at the time that sent me a
couple of ? ? but did not id, possibly a VK. VK3 was hearing me on backscatter from NW.

about 1445z-1510z. I had hoped for a peak around 1530z like
yesterday, but it never occured. My thanks to F5JKK and others to get them to turn their

Reports indicate that the administration of Monaco has now authorized operations on 6 meters for amateur. This is after a 1 month test which proved that there was no interference to other services. Laura, 3A2MD, who is genrally active on all bands, is attempting to get something up for this band. Until then, look for her on 10 meters (28016 or 28446 kHz) between 0630-0700z and on 15 meters (around 21032 kHz) between 1000-1100z before she moves to 20 meters CW/SSB.

Now I am on SIX! I just made my first three contacts on six!
At 03:10 CX8DX, then at 03:17 LU1FDQ, at 03:26 LU9DTC.
I am constructing a three element cubical quad, I just finished the driven element, hung it between two trees and VOILA! with only the Transverter the signals were very loud here. I like more the quad, it is quieter than a yagi, so I will have two antennas to compare. Well, we will see, what the future brings, maybe you can give all those friends, who made it posible to get me on 6 meters, my best regards and many, many thanks to them! God may keep them all ! I will close down here in the second week of March to pack up all the gear for shipment for a permanent move out. Last week was very quiet on 6m but will continue to run the beacon and will be operational lunch time 1100-1200Z and after 1630Z most days. I will continue to run the beacon on 096 overnight looking for long path to either JA or VK (perhaps several weeks early, but we're gonna try!)

PW0S : The TS60 glitch disappeared yesterday when they replaced the battery. So the sigs were strong and clear on SSB/CW.
They are trying to reschedule the depart for Saturday, so probably one more day.
Today they will keep the antenna pointed to EU and Africa and should turn it to Caribbean/US in the evening. GL to all

V85 Brunei: I wish to announce that the proposed visit to Brunei and a possible 50MHz operation starting April 12th 2001 has been cancelled. The reason being that there are no "discounted" seats available between Sydney and Brisbane on the departure day connecting with the Royal Brunei Airlines flight from Brisbane to Brunei. The Easter holiday period is a bad time to travel on the Australian domestic network, as you can see, discounted seats are already "sold-out". Sorry people, but that's life, my budget doesn't extend to the purchase of full price economy seats I'm afraid...73 de Jack.

Yes, better antennas are ideal for 6 meter work !!!
But aluminium tubing of the required diameters and
lengths are not locally available... So I am sending
Eduardo CO8LY the information on how to build a simple
2 element QUAD, and details about my ASD and ASTD antennas, which are made using just wire and provide some
useable gain, PLUS lower take off angle than the typical
wire dipole. The ASTD does require a terminating resistor
but at the 10 w to 100 w power level it can be made from
a number of 2 watt carbon resistors... Example, for my
50 watt rig, I use 10 resistors of 3.3 kilo-ohms , 2 watts
each, ends very near 330 ohms ( almost ideal termination )
and about 15 watts dissipation... Will never heat very
much , even when running slow CW at 50 percent duty cycle...
Experimental results of the ASD and ASTD ( Assymetric dipoles ) are very encouraging, but antenna modelling
experts are having troblem modelling them properly so
far... MOre about this later !!!
The good news is that CO8LY is now active, that he is
a dyed in the wool CW operator, likes to work DX, and
will be devoted to 6 meters monitoring for sure...
He has an INDEX Labs QRP PLUS which is non operational,
so any help will be most appreciated, as the INDEX
QRP PLus he can keep permanently connected to the transverter to monitor the band all the time, and will
not have to tie up his regular HF transceiver

re: D68C/B.......what's the point of running a beacon if no one
can respond? I heard the FO0AAA/B for a once-in-a-lifetime perhaps
opportunity but no one was at the rig. I was enraged and will
remember that sinking feeling of disapointment the rest of my life.
Personally I'd rather not even know there was an opening if
there was no one to man the 6m rig. What kind of operation
"TEASES" people like that? SIGH!!

re. d68c latest info on the d68c web says that the beacon is running on.090 but the 6m rig is not always manned,if you see an opening that is not noticed by the team inform your regional D68 pilot.

13 Feb. 01...RARE DX! I will be operating from FM02..Charleston, South Carolina on 21 Feb. to 23 Feb. FM02 is one of the most rare grids in the U.S. as most of it is Charleston Harbor and out in to the Atlantic. CO8LY ON THE AIR ON 6 meters !!!!
Eduardo Somoano C08LY made his first 6 meters QSO from
Santiago de Cuba, grid locator FL20la yesterday.
He is using a 10 watt transverter , from 50 mHz to 28
mHz.He will install a permanent half wave dipole antenna
for 6 this week. First QSO with CO8HF , Victor that has
a factory built rig with 50 mHz built in and had never
made a QSO on 6 before, Victor is also in Santiago de Cuba. I am tutoring Ed CO8LY regarding 6 meter band characteristics etc... I am sure that he will make an excellent 6 meter band operator !!!

Goodbye 3C5!! It sounds like my stay here is rapidly coming to a close as I am accepting a transfer back to Houston in April. Six metre operation from here is something I will never forget - it has been an eye-opener to see how often the band is open to the north during the day. 3C is not a magic spot for six metres, with less than 3000 qsos in the 3 years of operation here. But it is rare. And it is rare on 6m for a good reason.... with local TV on 48.250 (video), there is no way there should be any operation during TV hours. Also, the quantity of hash from the TV makes reception almost impossible without a noise canceller unit ANC-4. I will be operational for the next 3 weeks or so, and will be qrv as much as possible. I'm not sure of the exact date i will shutdown but will post it as soon as I know. 73s

RE:QSLs. Received last week: 9E1S, E30TA and TS7N, things are
moving I hope. RN6HW, no answer and few hopes unless He has
a manager (but not found).
The most surprising thing is the inexisting rate of replies via buro
from from the following countries: YU, (>20 wrkd no QSLs), UT/UR (16 worked no QSLs),
4X (6 worked 1 confirmed direct), EU/EW and ES no replies even via direct.

3A/IW5BZQ - Nice weekend in Montecarlo with my wife and..... my radio.
I was operational (just about 2 hours in total) only with my Icom IC706MkIIg and a loop Halo antenna, on the roof of my car, parked in face of "Jardin Exotiques".... so no DXpedition conditions, only my usual mobile station.
BTW, good tropo around midday on Sunday 11 with some interesting QSO! Here the short QSO's list:

V85 Brunei. My licence permitted me to operate on 6 m when I was there in 92/94. I worked a lot of good DX in April, but even if there is no DX, the JAs are usually around! If you operate in the North around Bandar Seri Begawan there is considerable QRM from the Limbang TV station. I was at the southern end of Brunei in Seria and the TV QRM was manageable. Good luck. Also TS7N card received. Nice one for the collection. Except XU all new countries worked in 2000 are confirmed. Unless all the hasle about managers and bureaus this is a remarkeble difference with the previouse cycle. I remember quite some countries, like FY, that cost me more than a year to get them confirmed.
Are there more Sixers waiting for XU card? Sent mine with IRC's as I was advised $$$$ would not work.

Not good news:
As a recent user of ionosonde data supplied via the World Data Centre
(www.wdc.rl.ac.uk) you may be concerned to learn that as of April
2001, the Radiocommunications Agency (RA) have withdrawn financial
support for the UK funded ionosondes (Chilton and Stanley). Despite
the support of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council
(PPARC), this places the ionosondes group in an impossible financial
position and without further sponsorship it is likely that one or both
of these stations will have to close.
Funding was originally provided by the RA in support of the HF
communications user community. This supplemented the funding supplied
by PPARC in support of scientific research.
If this decision is likely to impact on your work, and you would like
to see the provision of ionosonde data continued, you can contact Dr
Mike Warrington (emw@leicester.ac.uk). Dr Warrington chairs
a sub-committee which advises the RA on matters concerning the HF
region of the radio spectrum. He welcomes your comments and will
present them when his committee next meets. I would be grateful if you
would copy your comments to me at the same time.
Chilton/Slough and Stanley are the longest upper atmosphere data
series in the northern and southern hemisphere, respectively. Our user
statistics show that the data from these stations has been in great
demand and it is vital that you respond if you wish them to remain
available in the future.

have a go at PSK31, KD5HIO's HamScope software works perfectly
well without any modification. This brilliant software is
freeware and apart from PSK31, it hosts a number of other

Long-path openings from Eu to Far East, etc. Can someone please give a (simplified) explanation of the possible dates/times when we might get this propagation - GM is very far north for this I realise but I've nearly given up the hope of working to Japan, etc. this sunspot cycle, so the LP is a remote possibility. Just had my Oct 2000 DXCC upgrade back from ARRL.
Those in the process of sending off an upgrade or a first application might like to note that S07URE QSLs are now being deleted from original claims. (S07URE was QRV summer 1995) reason given "No Documentation Received".
Im assuming there are folk out there who have submitted 4U/KC0PA QSLs for Western Sahara not had them rejected?

The VK to EU path from up here certainly highlights how disappointing this cycle has been for North West Europe in that direction.
Last cycle between 89-92 had over 50+ openings to VK. Admittedly 80% were to VK6PA and it even got to the point where you'd go and do something else if he was the only one you could hear. My records show him heard 16 days in a row at one point! There were some great openings to other VK6 areas too, inc. 16 different VK6s on the same day, some on FM and even VK8s using dipoles in trees + a few VK4s, no 2/3/5 ever heard hear, as they all stopped 100-200km south. This cycle's openings have been somewhat less ......approx 20 mins of VK6DIR/P 8th Nov 2000, and he wasnt even on the mainland. How does that song go "memories...."

Re the EU path from S/E VK, despite the ability to read loggings on a daily basis and watching every EU opening into this region to my knowledge there has only been 2 openings from Coober Pedy well caught by VK5AYD, one into Adelaide where Col and ZBK fell over OH2 in their own words as the squelch opened on 110. The brief opening to QF32 with DUT where I thought I heard an Italian and of course the one off into VK2 where 70 contacts were made.
The rest was all going on up north where FNQ at least made 300 plus qsos and broke DXCC.
The other change here is that I have put the boots away forever and do not spend hours calling trying to turn the heads like in 1989. So runs on board for EU for Cycle 23 Nil compared with 25 countries and 150 plus qsos 11 years ago.
Talking the band up will not make it open into VK3 any more than it may open in VK2 again, it was random luck and a lot of erp, and I resent the inference that we are not doing enough. 5LP and I spent a year documenting the 3000 contacts made last cycle, you could barely hussle up 500 this time. What are we supposed to do to make it open you might ask? Anyway personally I feel its someone else's turn and have done enough to raise the awareness. Carry on..

So, if your in ZS (or PY5CC)I think you need to be CQing alot rather than listening - the rest of us need to do that + hope for a miracle hi!

Interesting thread of comments below with regard to loggers etc. I agree with Peter that "dead, nothing here, quiet" prove nothing and totally obstruct the function of the site. There is however other forums for making just those comments. The original purpose of Amateur Radio was to break new ground and this is now fast being surpassed by technology. If we are to maintain any status with the administrators then forums, loggers and record keeping are essential to justify our spectrum. To that end I have always kept notes, books of them, 2 previous cycles plus logs and now I save all that in an online format at my website.
As for activity, 2000 was an amazing year in all, especially the largest opening of all time into VK2 on the 31\10\00 with 60 EU qso's out to 16,951km and 9 entities [5 of which were new to me].
So it is there just a little harder to locate than previous.
On another note it is with regret that I most likely will not be returning to East Timor next equinox due to personal commitments.

David, most Places in the world can be found at http://shiva.pub.getty.edu/tgn_browser/ .Town center is in KO10, but location is at a crosspoint of 4 grids. So he's the only one who can give you his correct location.

Some help please. I received a qsl card from SP8BRQ today - QTH RZESZOW. Unfortunately, there was no Grid Reference shown on the card. At the time of the qso in May 2000 the station was giving his Locator Square as KN19AX. But a check on the Buckmaster Database shows the Square being as KO10AB. So does anyone know which is right square for certain?

8000 km Es comments were most interesting! If you check my website you can hear what it sounds like. 4X1RF was kind enough to record my signal on his telephone answering machine then make an RA file from it (TNX Chris)! At the time I worked Chris (worked TWICE on Es)- there was a FB Es opening to the UK (at the same great circle bearing). If 28MHz is any indication, multi-hop transatlantic Es events may occur quite frequently between June-August. From the mobile on 28MHz this past Es season, I worked DJ4DY & IK4GRO on June 30, IK5YJY on Aug 16, and IK4GRO on Aug 24, all with only 50 watts. The June opening ocurred in the early morning here at 1215-1251Z.
Both August sessions were notable due to their time - 2204Z
and 2135Z! I checked the F2 MUF directly after each QSO, and it was down around 14MHz. The openings were typical multi-hop Es, very localized and with weak signals (S2-S5). Any correlation with 50MHz openings on those dates?

There are much more good news in the new regulation in ON (e.g. 50..52 MHz) that the only POWER. Until now we have in HF and 144 MHz 150 watts output and we need to ask a speciale licence to have 600 watts PEP. The max power in 50 MHz will be 50 watts (or 200 watts output after request). Never 800 watts PEP! Best 73s.

More news on belgian power rules, SSB power output is measured with 2 tone method following the 326-4 specs (geneve 1982) that would mean that like in the past we may use 4 times the power in ssb (pep),so 50watts CW and 200watts SSB PEP, and upon demand 200 watts cw and 800 watts SSB PEP ;-) , this is described in addemdum 7 of the new belgian specs, there is no remark on fieldstrenght and so..

Re 8000km e's in South pacific. What 6m active stations are there in the Pacific 8,000km from centres of VK 6m activity? I'd suggest none (other than KH6 and that's north of the equator & we do get prop to there but is it e's). Starting point for study would be beacons in Pitcairn, Marquesas, Antarctic perhaps. Good hunting on Six.

K1SIX, VK3SIX & W6JKV: there is 8000 km Es in the southern hemisphere.
But in my experience you need a better than average (preferably exceptional) summer Es season.
I have received KVZK-TV chA2 American Samoa at 7520 km from Perth, VK6 on :
30 Dec 85 (80 minutes +59.75 audio); 31 Dec 86; 5, 14 (+59.75), 16, 18 & 21 Jan & 3 Feb (+59.75)
96. (Seems sunspot minimum is the best time.)
The best path for multi-Es in the southern hemisphere should be over the southern Pacific,
according to NBS Circular 582 ("Worldwide Occurrence of Sporadic-E"), and the worst is VK to ZS.

K1SIX, something that has always bothered me about the claims of 8000 kM eskip in the northern hemisphere, is the lack of an equivalent mode/path in the south. Surely if K6QXY et al can work all those JAs on E layer all those years, that something as simple as a VK6 to ZS6 contact would be achieved? However this was not to be and it took F2 to bridge the Indian Ocean. The only examples of long haul Es that I have ever obserevd were VK3 to FO8, when VK5NC was working ZL1 on 2 M eskip. Any suggestions? Likewise South American remains out of reach.
The flaw in the E layer theory in W6 to KH6/L7 and JA is that the great circle path from LAX to Tokyo is as the daily jets fly, which parallels the W6/W7 coatsline for several hundred miles as the jets fly the semi polar route.

Adam et AL- Back 20 years ago when I wrote my own ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE routines to make life easier- If something bothered me I would simply add an "exclude routine" that would NOT trigger my alarm IF "TNX" OR "THANKS" AND "QSL" happened to be within the string. Why should all "reasonable" communications cease because of our own "self imposed" limitations? I just don't get it! 73...

Hi SIXers! Do never forget the bureau! Yesterday, I got 3A2MW, ET3VSC, TR8KPJ (F6CDK) via bureau, all “exotic” cards for us. Because of contacts in late autumn 2000, nobody of them could have my bureau-card. So it seems, they sent it after the QSO. That’s really a good example, TNX guys!!! BTW - we all know some europeans SIXers, who accept “only direct”-QSLs and who never do confirm via the bureau… -GL-

Hi Jose.From April '99 Japanese MPT/local bureau of telecommunications requests a check-sheet concerning the human exposure to electromagnetic fields around radio amateur's antenna.It is a great concern when getting a high-power station license.We should calculate field strength on the ground around our antenna based on its radiation pattern, height and output power.The criteria is that the level on 50MHz should not exceed 27.5V/m on any ground point. As a vertical radiation pattern of horizontally polarized and vertically stacked Yagis is sharp, and the pattern is calculated (by YO) in a free space (the ground-reflection is not to be considered), it is not so difficult to conform the criteria. Conversely, single Yagi at relatively low height and/or on the roof-tower may have some difficulty in JA.GL and see you on this Spring!

Peter many people do care about 6, they have gone back to the band, and avoid places like loggers which breed discontent and malcontents. All the 6M dx news is adequately covered on the SM7, OZDX, VK4CP and Pacific Rim DX sites without any political rhetoric. The absence of people from loggers and chat pages has very little to do with the availability of DX. Try 28.885 or 21.345 sometimes.
