I remember recently that some one had a posting on here regarding rain static and earthed aeriel systems. Well I found out by pure chance when I tilted my prongs down into the garden this week the reason I had started to get bad rain static on 6m! The normally grounded first and second directors had gone high resistance when measured against the grounded boom. One was 2K and the other about 5K. The problem being caused by aluminium oxide build up over the years! I cleaned all the element to boom joints as a matter of course and my problem is now gone. Worth a look if you are suffering a similar problem. Happy prong cleaning! John, G0JJL

Many thanks to Zaba OH1ZAA and Steve KL7SIX and others for your comments concerning stacking and sharing towers. I have my 6m stack installed with the top yagi at 80ft, the lower at 68ft and the 10m yagi at approx 64ft. Txing on either 6 or 10 with 400W does not produce any noticable cross mod on signals on the other band. The polar plot from the stack is narrower than the singal yagi but I still do not know if it works any better - no DX around to put it to the test. I was thinking of moving the 10m yagi to put it in the centre of the stack but in view of Zaba's comments about optimum stacking distance I will leave it as it is for now. Listen for me in the pile equinox pile-ups! 73 Andy

More info from Mike >>>
Hi Ray,
Our next port is coming into view, at least on the radar, and we
shall be in port by 0800UTC tomorrow, so I'm going to be QRT for a
while. I'm not sure when I'll be back on air, but it could be three
days or three weeks. So far I am very pleased with the operation, I
have had at least one QSO every night, but there were so many squares
where I made no QSOs! It seems such a waste ...
I switched on at lunchtime on 28th and heard CU3URA/b, then CT0SIX,
and made a few QSOs into W/SW Europe from IL06, best DX EI2FSB, then
at afternoon coffee break hrd GB3MCB (again! Great beacon ...),
CN8LI/b and worked F4DBF (IN78).
Worked TT8JE twice more, and hrd his beacon 2000-2300+ UTC on 28 and
29 Aug. Also on 28th hrd PP1CZ/b again, but no PY stations.
Didn't hear anything from Eric at all tonight, but the last QSO to
date was D44TD by tropo, sigs quite weak but okay - except for my
sprog on .110 again. So he is active now! I didn't get a locator or
what his station is. I know Eric was very keen to work him, and I
thought it would be open to Chad again tonight, but maybe it's not so
easy after all!
Good news from home rxd via email: have QSLs from SU9ZZ, TT8JE,
and 6W4RK worked from GU. I think that makes about 60 DXCC confirmed
:o)
By the way, don't believe the distances on my log, because in each
square I have used ----AA as my locator for my computer log, which
won't accept a four-figure "own locator". Not very accurate, I'm
afraid.
I made a few recordings of interesting signals, and hope to provide
them as mp3 files on my website when I get home.
Thanks to everyone who has called me so far, and sorry for those who
missed me. There will be more chances at those squares on the
way home, I hope, and I'm sure I'll do quite well from the
Mediterranean later on in the year.
Thanks again for all your help, Ray, and hope to see you on air soon.
I will let you know when I am able to operate again.
73 & good dx

A few additional comments on stacking.... Symmetric positioning
of the antenna of the other band (at the center of the stack)
does not mean decoupling, but just a symmetric disturbance.....
I have done a number of simulations with several mixed arrays....
With two bands the higher frequency antenna is always most affected....
Booms should be aligned (parallel), otherwise multiple parasitic
resonances are possible.... For the same reason it is advisable to
isolate the elements from the booms (polyethylene tube around the
center of the element before clamping).... Trap HF-beams can have
very complex resonances.... The other band distorts the radiation
pattern, and might pull power down its feedline.... The construction
of the feedline match (of the other band) is decisive for the amount
of power lost.... A gamma match on another band may not couple well,
but if it accidentally resonates with the odd impedance on the wrong
frequency, it may be just opposite... This is very complex matter...
From Steve's (VK3OT/KL7SIX) experience a 11-ele yagi can indeed
provide similar results, as the radiation pattern of the 11-ele
has very low sidelobes. Stacking is certainly most effective on
the shorter yagis (with stronger sidelobes)... During simulation
always use the H-plane plot, as the sidelobes are stronger there...
The torque on the rotor with a stack is lower, but you need an
extra mast bearing.... With a stack the E-pattern is certainly wider,
and the H-pattern sharper..... Also don't forget polarization
experiments and antenna height options.... Lots of trade-offs
or everything in parallel (best for real comparison).... I also
have a technique for near-field control on stacks to minimize
noise pick-up from the environment, but I have not published it
yet; it's in the queue....

After the posting about the 50MHz Beacon generation code inside my DxMonitor Viewer, I thought maybe many users would appreciate just a list generator program. I have extracted the relevant portions of my code and put them into a stand-alone program called BeaconList (at V1.0). It is available at http://www.ozhelpservices.com/beaconlist.htm if you do not want to run the full add-on Viewer software. I do ask that if you modify the reference data file (50list.csv), send it back by email so that all can share the updated data.

Re the stacking of yagis that are not cleanly divided, ie an HF array in between you will absorb/pick up lots of RF by cross coupling es if its a 20M yagi. Tried this in Cycle 21 with two stacked 8's and so much energy came down on 20M from 400watts on 6 that it was unworkable, used to light up the antenna lamp in the rear of my FT101.
Re the debate against single yagis, stacked yagis were around for decades and never produced the results into VK that singles did. es the eme only even done by a single yagi, rhombics and stacked 8s were around for decades and no such results. All the records from VK have been broken by single yagis. Two guys who had four stacked 6m arrays both had to rebuild them within 2 years when they broke apart in the wind. Four by six vs a single 6m 11 el had same signals in Europe from VK3.

With stacking, if one wants to minimize influence of the many
cosmic noise spots (off the main lobe) then 0.6 wavelength is
absolutely optimum... With short yagis this also yield the maximum
POSITIVE interaction (maximum current/gain due to mutual impedance
effects)... With longer booms there is a better gain optimum (+1 dB)
at 1.2 - 1.6 wavelength spacing, but there will be more sidelobes...
The 0.8 wave spacing is the worst possible considering cosmic noise
leakage and gain, but still much better than a single yagi.... See
Dr. James Lawson's book "Yagi Antenna Design" ISBN 0-87259-041-0
Chapter 4 page 4-14....If you have antennas for two bands in the
tower, put the other band at the center of the stack.... Good
luck; while you hear them, you might work them.... 73, "Zaba"

Many thanks for the replies to my query of yesterday. Currently I have the two 6ele yagis stacked with 12ft spacing and about 4ft above the 4ele 10m yagi. Subjectively there does not seem to be any interaction. However I could widen the stacking distance between the 6m yagis by putting the 10m yagi between them. Is it likely to be worth the effort? Has anybody carried out any experimental work on the optimum spacing between stacked 6m yagis? 73 Andy

Andy, G3SVD I have three yagis for different bands 6m,4m and 2m on the same mast. They are all 3 feet apart and suffer no noticeable interaction problems. According to the books I have 3ft or more is fine. The only aerial likely to suffer is the one for the higher band if you use less than 3ft spacing. I am yet to be convinced about stacking 2 yagis for the same band. One long prong on each band seems to do business for me no problems !

More info from Mike>>>Hi Ray, It's really good of you to be my "ground station", hi, it makes life
a lot easier knowing you are helping to keep people informed, and
it's a good idea to post the log up on your website. Next time I get
a chance I'll have a look myself! I can occasionally access the
Internet if we have a huge email session, as it uses up the spare
bandwidth if we go browsing - doesn't add much time or cost.
I managed to pull down the UKSMG announcement page a couple of times
and even post a quick message before losing the link. Otherwise I
shall have to wait til we're in port and find an Internet cafe (but
then I can't operate, unless it's a CEPT country).
As per your question, I'm on the MV Greenpeace as a Radio Operator,
and so I have a GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System)
General Operators' Certificate also. I shall be o/b for 4 months or
so. As you might appreciate there will be times when I won't be able
to operate, and some of the schedule that I can't announce
beforehand.
I'm now getting into TEP propagation, and was surprised on 26th when
I put out a CQ on an apparently dead band to be answered by G0KZG/mm
(LH38), and my best dx so far (8000km+). I was pleased to make a
2-way /mm QSO!!!
Also I heard TT8JE beacon from 2000UTC to 2300UTC (when I switched
off - sigs still there!)
After I moved into IM11 I worked 3 CT3 stations by tropo, plus PY5CC
and PY2BW. More PYs heard on CW, but I don't have my key here ...
aaagh! Beacons PP1CZ and PY0FF also heard.
>From IL08 on 27th, my only QSO was with TT8JE under difficult condxns
(my sprog on .110) I hope we really completed the QSO, very difficult
to be sure. Again Eric's beacon was audible from 2000 approx. until
bedtime at 2330, S9 at times. Beacons heard 1934 UTC: 7Q7SIX (519)
and 2112 UTC: PP1CZ/b (519). No other stations hrd.
Only a small log update this time, but with some very nice QSOs.
Last signal from Europe was GB3MCB at 1330 on 26th, heard in IM12. I
called CQ but now takers. Maybe get into position for Europe when
further south.
73 for now
hope to hear you soon

I have recently been playing around with stacking antennas on 6m. I have 2x6ele Cushcraft yagis at 70+ feet presently seperated by 0.6 wavelength (3.6m/12ft) and on the same tower tower as a 4ele 10m yagi. Does anybody have any information, or know where I can get some, concerning the interaction between antennas on the same tower and the optimum stacking height for antennas on 6m? Would it be better to stack the antennas at say 0.9 wavelength and put the 10m yagi between the two?

RE Z31JA he is good via the buro although he has a new callsign,i dont think that GU6AJE/mm is able to update online logs whilst he is at sea. recent QSOS are not on his site at the moment.
maybe when he reaches a destination he will use an internet cafe,he is heading for D4 at the moment.

More info from Mike>>>Hi Ray,
Thanks for the mails. The DX News was very useful, I can see the sort
of openings that are around at the moment, but unfortunately I can't
really have these regularly because the files are too big. The
problem is that our email goes via satellite, and big files are
expensive! Also, the rules say only 3 personal emails in per day.
Thanks for your offer to sign me up to the service, but I can't do
it.
I had one QSO last night from IN41, with TT8JE :o) 59/59 on SSB.
I have tried the PSU with higher power, and 100W is okay!
There was another nice Es opening from IM39, and worked into PA, but
I called for you and either you weren't there or I couldn't hear you.
I had many G, GW, PA, ON, DL and F, 38 QSOs in 16 squares. Working
split 50.150MHz, rx 3kHz up.
After lunch I switched on the TRX, and heard GB3MCB at 599+, and
thought "I have only 30mins before going back to work". But the
captain was very interested in what I was doing, so he said, "Don't
stop when you are having fun". I had condxns for 40mins, so worked a
few more than I would have done. Pity I couldn't make a QSO with you,
but maybe tonight? I was afraid that maybe the Es season was coming
to an end, but it still seems good from here. It's also good to see
ZS, ZD7 etc in the DX worked. I think this is going to be a good
trip!!!
73 for now and thanks for the info and postings etc,
LATE NEWS
The Es came back again later, and I had a total of 109 QSOs, and
during the opening I also went into IM38, so many stations worked two
new wet squares today. I called for you whenever I heard other Dutch
stations, but nothing heard from you. I did make two QSOs with
MU0FAL, so I was pleased to work back into Guernsey this time.
I see from the spots you sent that N1RZ has been looking for Eu
contacts on WSJT on 50.270, so I think if everyone else is using .270
for WSJT I will call there by that mode, and not on .310
MORE LATE NEWS
I forgot to post this mail in time, and I have had another opening,
this time mostly to GU, G, GW and one F. Made 20 more QSOs from IM25,
bringing the total up to 141.
I have attached a list of QSOs so far, and the squares from which I
worked them (I hope you have Winzip). It will be interesting to see
who works the most wet squares during this trip. There are already
some who have worked me in three!
73 again,
hope to hear you soon

If someone works him over the next few days please give him my profuse thanks for five 0200utc early morning skeds and four new grids. Glad to see he has been having frequent evening openings as it will be a long time (maybe never) before those rare wet squares are active again. Re trip to 4U1ITU. My trip next week is still on. I shall be in Geneva from 28-31 August on a business trip
until 30 August. I will try to get to the 4U1ITU shack during the evenings of 28, 29 and 30 August.
However I may have business engagements in the evenings as well so no promises! Any operation
will be terminated by 20.00 UTC due to ITU security requirements. It would help if any exceptional
conditions (SpE, TE or F2) could be reported to me from 14.30 UTC by sending an SMS message to my
GSM +353 87 236 7580. I will then try to get to the shack as soon as possible from where I am! On Friday
31 August I plan to be in the 4U1ITU shack from 07.00 to 15.30 UTC when I have to leave to catch a
plane back to EI. Again an SMS message can be sent any time on 31 August if the band is open and YOU
think you should be hearing me. 50 MHz equipment at 4U1ITU is a FT650 and 5 element TONNA. I'm not
going to announce any operating frequencies since the shack is in a commercial area of Geneva and there are many
sources of noise and signals. Let's hope for some conditions during Friday. Perhaps it's time to consider a serious
50 MHz operation from 4U1ITU. I'll think about that for the 2002 Es season.

Hi Ray,
Thanks for the reply, and thanks especially for posting the news on
the UKSMG page. I finally was QRV in IN54 and have worked 11 stations
so far in DL, F, HB9, SP, OK and I2. First QSO IZ2DOB, and best DX
SP6ASD (2150km). No condxns yet to PA!
The wire dipole seems to work okay, and I have a good match. I'm only
running 70W approx. because of the 12V PSU I have on board.
Weather is good, and the sea is calm today. Should be QRV again
tonight after approx. 1730 UTC, possibly IN41 ??. I have been calling
on 50.150MHz so far.
I would be interested to know if there are any openings to outside
Europe, say if you hear CT3/EH8/6W4RK/TT8JE etc.

RX-ed today from Mike, GU6AJE/MM:>
Hi Ray,
Thanks for the email, which was forwarded to me here.
I now have a 6m antenna in place (inv. V dipole), but not finally
fixed yet. We are currently sailing south across the Bay of Biscay
(IN66), and I hope to be fully QRV tonight. I did hear some Es
signals yesterday from IN67 using a 144MHz antenna, from GM, SP, DL,
OZ.
I won't be using 50.110 as I have an S8 spurious right on frequency!
Why is it always on .110????? Re split operation, yes that was my
plan if it gets busy. When the band seems dead I shall use WSJT on
50.310MHz.
Although I have email on board, I cannot connect to the Internet so
no clusters/UKSMG/N1RZ map for me.
Hope to hear you on soon!

Hi DXers
Its with pleasure that I announce that Amateur Radio won't be forgotten in East-Timor now that the only active DXers in
the Territory have leave or are about to leave.
Carlos Poinho, CU3FT, active DXer from the Azores Archipelago and a Telecom Tech. for the Portuguese Air-Force is in Tour-of-Duty for UNTAET in Dili, Capital of East-Timor, and will try to be as much active as possible with the callsign 4W/CU3FT.
The License has just been received from United Nations New York and creditation procedures in process by DXCC.
Special attention will be given to 6m., specially the upcoming F2 openings in October/November (remember Darwin/Australia was 59 in 50 Mhz October last year in IN50), but also in giving continuity to ETARA - East-Timor Amateur Radio Association, working together with local authorities for a future licensing autority after full independence and in introducing Amateur-radio to the East-Timor nationals.

Some rumors floating around that ARRL is accepting E-QSLs for credit for awards. A query to thew Awards Director, NC1L confirms that this is not true. What is under consideration is a future world wide logbook database, supported and managed by the ARRL for verification of QSOs from registered users. This is far from being implemented at this time. Meanwhile, good old paper QSL's are still required, and hopefully those computer generated lables are all either signed or initialed in ink by the operator or manager.
PS from my own collection, I can say that the older cards which were sent as postcards ( as opposed to being in an envelope) bring back fonder memories, especially when addressed to a QTH long since left, and maybe with a 3 or 4 cent stamp on same.

Re QSLs. Many of the QSLs I receive and send comprise computer generated labels with NO human
intervention except for getting the wife to stick them on the card! The definition of an E QSL seems to be the mode of sending rather than the QSL format. Is this
the objection? If it is I've got a solution which I've tried on my web-site (EI3IO.com). 1. Publish QSL generating
software, 2. Publish a personal QSL template that works with that software, 3. Publish your log and 4. Provide
a means to export the log info to the QSL software. Then the QSL is not sent by Email but is developed electronically
by the person that wants the card. If I wanted to cheat I could still use the software to
produce a card with any call on it, print it on my computer, fill in the details and stamp it verified by G3XYZ.
Personally I don't see the problem with sending QSLs by Email unless of course you want to collect dollars
or IRCs using the snail-mail method! Not really a gripe or groan just a comment! I still eventually send cards
via the bureau (purchased from a print-shop using computer generated labels) and hand-written direct cards.

Now is the time to update the map of Eastern squares worked by North America on Es. Please have a look and understand how the color coding works. I would appreciate any updates via e-mail. A question for those of you that understand the mechanics of propagation. Is it possible that the recent violent eruption of Mt. Etna is responsible for the great conditions we are currently experiencing on 6? I was wondering if the dust and gas outpourings have migrated into the ionospheric regions and are being ionised to give us the recent lift in conditions, or is it just a coincidence?

For those of you interested in antennal upgrades and who are pondering which one to go for, try a bit of aluminium farming (No foot and mouth problems with this) and build one for yourself. I have located an excellent design by VK4ADC. Go to his web pages for the full details and instructions. http://www.ozhelpservices.com/50mhz_yagi.htm I have checked the design with Quick Yagi, Yagimax and NEC software and it all stacks up so to say! Forget cows and sheep the future for UK farming lies in aluminium.

will be qrv with a few om's 2m and up in the cevennes (south of france) august 22-28.
If there is any interest in grid squares JN14 and close will take 6m as well. Could not
find definite info on legal issues - CEPT regarding 6m in France, but there a few spots
in the area that can be activated with 5watts at least that is our understanding.

Did hear the "mystery beacon" again today (friday).
Openings were not very good, and at the time I heard
the beacon, the openings were mostly to I4, I5, I2.
Also, the frequency was the same as IK5ZUL/b heard
a few days ago. I think this beacon must have
some sort of intermittent problem. Anyway, received an
e-mail from LA1YCA (KQ10) a few days ago. He moved back north

While others are talking about it, Denmark (OZ) has made an "operator class" license. To obtain it you pass an exam like the one you need for using a VHF radio in your boat, so operator skills only, no technical questions. The good news: This class does NOT give access to 50MHz.

Not only the exciter phase noise counts, but also the receiver phase noise does, so one cannot hope to keep interference under control by acting at the transmit side only. It is a long way to go, and having a class-A final is just a step along that way. However, the IMD products of class-A amplifier will depend on both drive signal and grid bias. For best performance one should adjust drive and bias such that the grid never becomes positive, nor the plate current ever gets too close to zero. Such drive limits will further constrain the amplifier efficiency. Rule of thumb: the lower the output power, the best the IMD.

Johan: While your intermod products are a zillion dBs down on your class A-amp, the phase noise of your LO will generate the splatter. Better spend your time & $$$'s on building a clean exciter. Anyway - is splatter really a problem on 6m, except some extreme cases ? Most people have quite a high radiation angle, so local splatter is NOT the same problem as on higher frequencies.

Class A gives absolutely fantastic voice quality on SSB. It sounds
just like FM. But make shure that the whole driver chain is Class A.
Since bias current is constant, it's best to integrate ALC in the audio
stages. You have my full recommendation Johan; your "audience"
will enjoy it, and there is no chance for splatter... One day I'll do it
again (Class A). At least we need the heating rigs up in the North from
October till May..... 73, Zaba OH1ZAA/2 (non-active this Summer)...

RE: Class "A" PA's efficiency. Depending what signal you will add to it you can tell it. Anode current is allways the same. So when you press PTT and keep quiet efficiency is "ZERO". So don't expect more than 25% over a given time. At least you can use it as a shack heater. Why would people want to use a class A amplifier? I would suggest to use a real big tube for it. Like a 4CX1000 or something like that.
But I never would use a class "A" amp in RF service. Class AB is just good enough for sideband etc. 73,

MISTERY BEACON: sorry, I meant 146 ms
Tony, I0JX <i0jx@amsat.org>
- Wednesday, August 08, 2001 at 22:18:05 (GMT/BST)
RE MISTERY BEACON: this evening the band here is completely dead, but the mystery beacon is ON with its odd keying and a very steady signal (S3). This is obviously ground propagation from a station located somewhere in Italy. Antenna heading from Roma is about 315 deg., this meaning that the beacon is located on a virtual line along the Thyrrenian coast, joining Roma to Genoa via Florence. Carrier frequency (zero beat) is 50020.2 KHz. Mode is CW (not FSK). I recorded the beacon and I tried to reverse the CW with a computer program (the only thing I could try...). I determined that the signal consists of multiples of an elementary time slot of 1,460 milliseconds. The ONs precisely last either 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 6 slots, whilst the OFFs precisely last for either 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 slots. The Morse code instead specifies that ONs should be either 1 or 3 slots, whilst OFFs should be either 1 or 3 or 7 slots. Conclusion: the mistery beacon remains a mistery!!

It's quiet up here in IO66... There are very few openings and they may be very short, so we'll have to make some minor changes of plan. I will move down to 50.093 for routine CQing, and change to 30sec periods - I will always TX the SECOND 30sec period, UTC.... I will normally CQ on CW, fairly fast to make best use of any meteors, but will reply with whatever mode/speed you use to call me. QSOs may have to be very quick BKIN. In case of QSB before the QSO is complete, fall back to the 30sec periods again. I'm happy to start a QSO on Es and finish a half-hour later on MS! ... Thanks to the originators,David G8GXP:The following information was supplied by Tony G3RKL.
The beacons are back on due to the hard work by Tony G3RKL and Nick G7EKY.
The beacons, GB3BUX, on exactly 50.000MHz and 70.000MHz
and co-located with the 2m repeater GB3HH at Harpur Hill just
south of Buxton in Derbyshire, were returned to service at 1830Z on
the 1st of August. The transmitters have been extensively rebuilt on
a common chassis, and share the same circuitry, which locks the
output in time and frequency to MSF, the 60kHz standard
transmission signal from Rugby. Users will have noticed a change
to the previous keying sequence, where, although the callsign id's
remain the same (GB3BUX on the minute, GB3BUX IO93BF on the
five minute mark), during each second, there is now a 10ms carrier
break every 100ms, with a 40ms break on the second. This is to
allow users to examine the signal at 10 sweeps a second on an
oscilloscope for propagation studies. It also has the effect of rapidly
distinguishing the signal due to the characteristic amplitude warble.
The time reference is on the carrier break and should be within
100us or so of the corresponding break in MSF's carrier. Also,
since the output is locked to MSF, any Doppler data due to
propagation conditions can be extracted by users with appropriate
frequency standards. At times when MSF is not available, during
maintenance periods, for example, the keying sequence reverts to
the previous single 100ms break at the start of every second. The
nominal erp for each frequency is 25W, omnidirectional, horizontal
polarization from twin stacked turnstiles at approximately 15ft agl.
73 Derek G4IHO
Ps The beacons are out of service due to maintenance at the site where they
are located.
Hope to have them back Monday evening 6th August.
Thanks guys, much apriciated by the 6m community, David 'gxp

Ian G3SEK will be calling cq from 18:31 utc today on odd minutes from IO66XJ.His call is GM5RP.As he has hills in the direction of the UK he is using MS backscatter to work G. I beamed 320 or so and as well as reasonable ms reflections there was a very weak residual iono type signal. Stations with a good takeoff in that direction should be able to hear him without resorting to MS.Also he is monitoring for Aurora and Es of course.

Unless, Mike et al, the beacon is really gone mad and keying only rubbish. As Uffe PA5DD said, the beacon is suffering BSE "Beacon Sending Errors". I heared the beacon here also with a good strength and couldn't make anything of it, not even with reversed cw. Strange nobody here knows where the damned beacon is..........

Hi all,
Tried to analyse the "mystery beacon" using a spectrogram, so I could fill in the "wrong side" of the FSK, but it's still gibberish to me. I think MAYBE the call sign has an "X" at the end (I know, like 50% of all six metre beacons, hi hi), and MAYBE the number "56". It's definitely NOT real CW, so must be the wrong side of FSK. My first guesses are EITHER IK5ZUL or CX1CCC, but I am not at all sure. It seems like the RA sample has at least a full beacon cycle, so should be possible to decode eventually, but I give up!

Ref bandplans & cw vs ssb, you want to try living in IO93BG and listening to GB3BUX across the whole band when beaming 150 through 270 degrees! I wish I could hear TT on any mode. Let`s hope for some more of our severe Buxton weather & get the thing back off the air. By the way, it is the same on both my TS680 & FT736 so probably not a receiver fault. Looks like I`ll be working GW long path from now on.

Re: TT8JE. It seems that double standards are a constant here.
Peter, Dave... I didn't say I wouldn't work a DX I need even if he/she appears in beacon portion of the band (or even OOB, hi). That was not the issue here. It's the DX station that dictates the way things are going. And if obeying some simple voluntary rules is a turnoff for a DX I'm sooo sorry (ie. I may not care if KP4 are ragchewing on .110, I may even like it as I monitor .110 and I might hear them, but ask locals if they like it). I was not crucifying anybody. It was just a simple remark. Now I feel like being crucifyed :-)
I wouldn't say a thing if I don't think Eric is an excellent operator. And I'm sure he's six meters freak just like we are and he has not activated TT because of the love for rest of us, but because HE likes it (after all, that's all that matters). Bob

Re: TT8JE's operating. Agreed Dave. Are we getting foolish or is it the summer heat? Wonder what men said when they still needed the country? Would they coop with a bandplan or ignore the rules? One thing for sure: I would have worked him! A bandplan is okay and will help to some kind of an organisation. The way Eric did is just okay with me.
Stop this foolish complains please? 73,

I have come to the conclusion that this page and the internet in general is a very good way to stop any one
wanting to activate any new countries or squares.
all the comments and critisisms that appear here are a real
turn off for a DX station
I say well done and thank you Eric TT8

I think the bandplan needs more of a good hard wallop, than a few tweaks, ;o) But the emergence of WSJT just underlines the problem: it's a mode which doesn't fit in anywhere naturally - it might be data but it can't go in the middle of the RTTY, FAX and SSTV WB sigs, nor can it go on the MS reference freq (or should we call that the French calling frequency today?) Things change - technology, amount of activity, experience of operators, knowledge of propagation - the only thing that hasn't changed on 6m for a few years is the bandplan. Yes, I agree we should keep to it (as much as possible, no-one's 100%), but not be blind to the fact that it is getting old and creaky. Like any aging entity it needs to spread out in the middle a bit to stay comfortable, hi. 73

Re discussion on SSB in the CW segment, inter-continental DX window etc. Isn’t it time we reviewed the bandplan? Beacons occupy vast swathes of the CW segment, restrictions (e.g. erp) have been eased, the list of countries with access to 6m continues to grow (thankfully!). The existing bandplan was designed in quieter times, maybe it needs a few tweaks.

Peter, G3IBI & Co. Re: VU activity. Since May end there has only been only 3 days when
very weak signals were heard. We have very few stations within 3000 Km range. So far
the SpE has been disapointing to me and Bob VU2MKP/HB9MKP. We were hoping for some
multi hop which didn't happen. There were a few days when very short transmissions were
heard. We are still on band and listening all day on 110. July 31st was the first time I
heard video buzz on band after the end of May.. We should hear EU soon..

I have just read Kerry's comment about building your own beams.
I can't agree with him more, I have build to beams that we (G0WNL/P) have used for the summer E's contest for a number of years, and am convicenced that the only reason we have been been 1st or 2nd is because we are always developing our system.
I also use YO (Yagi Opt) & Yagimax2.
But be careful of over optimising your beam(s)!!!

Re: TT8JE. Eric, I don't want to start an argue here, but if there's a BANDPLAN, one should obey it. A lot of keyboards went worn out from "cqing on .110" to "WSJT and other digital modes QRG" discussions. Why should this be exception? Or you? Or me? Or anybody? You could as easily QSY from .110 to .120 to work SSB. But you QSY-ed from .110 to .092 and shortly after started making SSB contacts, with pile-up wiping out entire CW portion (I was not the only one who complained about that, btw).
And, Peter BCG yes, I've worked TT8JE. I have confirmed TT. But, who knows what I've missed due to QRM? ;-)
GL all. CU in next opening. Bob

Eric, Well said. You run your beacon out of the way on a good freq and operate on that freq on CW. If someone cannot work CW you come onto SSB to work them. That is gentlemanly operating. OK so it's not in line with voluntary band plans. But, if you run your beacon above .100 people complain. If you operate on .110, they complain, if you operate too near .110 they complain, if you don't split they complain, if you do split they complain. BUT ONLY IF THEY DONT WORK YOU. 73 Eric CUL

About 3V8CB qsling, the adress from Mustaffa via DL1BDF is ok!! Because this is his one callsign, Mustaffa is the man behind the station there in 3V, this is the second clubstation after 3V8BB. So far i knows is this a boyscout station!!!! Expect NO fast qsl from Mustafa because he is absolut NO dxer, also he works for the Lufthansa and is very often from home.

A message from VQ9JT: I am surprised to hear that you are not getting QSL's from VQ9IO. VQ9IO is the club station call sign and we have been giving 100% answers to rcvd qsl's. Although, we do have trouble with individual operators using their own call signs. Everyone at Diego Garcia only stays there for a little while and then gets transferred & sometimes they do not leave a forwarding address so the cards go unanswered. I left Diego Garcia on the 17th of May and at that time I mailed out all QSLs that we had received. I do have a stack of Bureau cards to mail and should do so in the next few days. I will not be back in VQ9 land until October but I will send an email to my friend there and check to see if all cards have been answered. I have no blank VQ9IO QSL cards at my home QTH in Texas. Thanks for working our stations and I hope that you will receive a card shortly. Joe K5DIY/VQ9JT
