Correction to my last mail: on Apr. 25th I hrard a few PA/ON via Es from 13.40 until 14.35 UT. Just found my loogbook in the luggage ;-)).

Just back from a 10-day trip to my usual QTH in SV9, KM35. Had that nice new little FT817 with me just to check out how this tiny box is working on six. Boy oh boy, very fine RX and what a mess to hear nice DX almost every day on six with a simple dipole on the roof of my house. No Esporadic to Central Europe from 20th to 30th April but every day ES to Ukraine and Russia. And big sigs from Africa starting always @ 16.00 UT lasting until 19.00 UT. Thanks to ZS6BW who heard my 2.5 Watts into that nasty dipole ;-)). Made a few contacts with Ukraine and made a couple of boys in Africa happy with KM35. Next time (mid of June) I will take an old HB9CV with me and a PS, perhaps small PA too. Will let you know. BTW, that little radio is fantastic on 80 and 40 meters too. Made >100 QSO's with 2.5 Watts out into a 12 Meter slooping dipole. Fun! CU, '73 de

Hi Jaap, Halali is a camping place /resort in the Etosha National Park of Namibia. It is in to the south of the Etosha Pan more or less half way from the east to the west. A nice place I have been there myself in 1994.

Hi there. by accident today I heard ZS6TBW/B here in JO33hg aarround 1650ut. Peaking 579 and in cw the only dx signal on the band was V5/ZS6BTE 569 1656ut here on 103 later to ssb 125 and 135 but then allready the link to the propagation areas was broken. QTH given was JH80 (new main sq!) and Halali? but this place is not in my new Encarta.. It was a lucky one because lately sometimes i do not even bother to receive anymore..

GD everyone. I do not know if it is worth of the connection to the ISP, but there is a lot of EU-EU traffic on the DX window. Wouldn't be better to stick to the agreed bandplan? I was getting crazy at understanding the signal with antenna at 90 degs... Good DX's de Stefano

Since the beginning of this year it seems to me that there has been a major upsurgence of spamming and viruses on the Internet. To minimise the possibility that the UKSMG's mailing list aggrevates the situation (we have no reason to believe that it does) I have substituted "***" for the "@" in all the e-mail addresses on the list . So if they are picked off the web site by a robot they will be incorrect. Please remember to substitute a "@" for the "***" before sending a mail and we hope you see that we are doing our bit to reduce this very annoying increase in spamming and virus distribution. I would suggest that you do the same on this bulletin board as well.

706mkII Johan, PA transistors for the 706mkII are available from Icom UK (tel +44 1227 741741)- they also stock the service manual. If you would like to borrow a service manual or require photocopies of diagrams etc please e-mail. Changing the PA transistors is easy, re-adjusting bias and overall TX gain (if required) is a bit tricky. 73

A word about the VK6 QSL Bureau...Non WIA members can use the Bureau for a higher charge on outwards cards. Inwards cards are handled providing the recipient arranges to collect them. The latter is the problem. A large number of recipients just don't bother to claim thir cards, much to the inconvenience of the Bureau.

QSL Bureau: The situation in VK2 with the bureau has changed a few times over the years. At one time, up until recently, non WIA members were not allowed access inwards/outwards to the bureau. Now, I have been told, non members can pay a "bureau only fee" renewable each year. Like the vast majority of VK2 radio amateurs I am not a member of the WIA due to a variety of reasons that I do not wish to publish. I find that QSLing direct is not a problem with most people, the non return of cards in many cases is reflective on the poor QSLing standards from the applicants end. There a lot of so called "DXers" out there who are very unprofessional in their QSLing duties,little wonder they receive nothing back then moan and groan about it. Anyone who has operated a "DX" callsign will surely agree that the so called professionalism of amateur radio has dropped off in the last decade, little wonder why so many organistations confuse amateur radio with CB radio! You should see some of the nonsense I have received over the years from people attempting to QSL with some of my DX callsigns, amateurs we are and amateurs we will stay??

The comment below regarding VK buro QSLing is inaccurate and may cause some confusion. In VK4 one does not need to be a WIA member to be a member of the VK4 QSL buro. There are many many VK4 6M ops, including myself, that are not WIA members but are members of the VK4 WIA QSL buro. This arrangement is very popular and works well. I cannot speak for other states policies. FYI, The ailing WIA represents less than 25% of VK amateurs and there are plans right now to force the remodelling of the WIA or create a new organisation, if the current Management continues to ignore the problems... but that is another story, and not appropriate on this forum!

After waiting six months finally my new six metre rig arrived, the Patcomm 500, I am delighted with the excellent receiver, has even a variable filter However the prediction often seen here that a new radio brings inmmediately a new country, still has not materialised. I also discovered with a new diode for my Bird, that all this time I had been running only 10 watts, and with that meagre output am close to the 100 mark!

I'm going o buy into the qsl debarcle and state categorically as a qsl manager for decades of rare VK call areas and XU0/4W6/ et al that 100% qsl to all cards received direct and via bureau for cards entitled to go that way (VK bureau will not process any incoming for non-WIA members) notwithstanding postal pilferring. I have also found that smart DX ops (HF at least) always put the dollar note or irc inside the second envelope. VK3 inwards sends me every incoming bureau card even back 20 years today ie VK9XT,VK9YT YJ8OT VK0PK,VK2ATZ/LH 1979, they even know every country Ross VK3TYN went to and distribute the cards to the correct owner. The VK3 burea knows every op of VK9ZG/ZD and the various qsl managers. SO the bottom line is if you sent a card to VK3OT and never got a reply then the caard never came. As for returns I have 100% return on every DX station ever worked on 6M ever! Excepting JAs. And every country that ever worked XU0UN or 4W6UN on 6M has their cards.

SEC1223: No noise - works great - took one to H44 last year and can confirm it runs OK even in tropics temps. It survived the round the world trip and is in use here now. 73

RE DIRECT QSLs - I automatically QSL 100% via bureau on all first QSOs and reply direct to all direct QSLs. But PLEASE fellows, if you want a direct QSL please include SAE and return postage. Lately 75% of direct cards don't have return postage and it is getting expensive. In future all direct cards without postage will have to go back via bureau. Thanks

adrian , i have and use sec-1223 switch mode psu , i have tested it from 1.8-430mhz and no noise that i can mention. 50mhz its quiet as a mouse , tried it on dx70th , ic746 and ic706mk2g , will power 140w radio no bother , the fan hardly ever comes on here.

Adrian: I have a Samlex Sec-1223 but so far have only used it with my IC706 on 2 metres (50 watts) where it performed flawlessly. I'll check it for noise on 6 metres at the weekend and let you know. 73.

Adrain, look out for the clip on PSU which goes on the back of the old FT650 ...smaller and lighter than the one you mention and 100% clean. It can handle the 706 all day, has internal fan and works on 110 or 240 (switch on the side) ..this PSU is a good secret for "suitcase" DXpeditions.

Has anyone had experience of the Samlex Sec-1223 Switch Mode 23amp PSU, its only slightly bigger than the IC-706, I am looking at a couple of these to take to VP9, I know older switch mode psu's were very noisy but would appreciate any comments on them, the attraction is obviously the small size and rating and that they can work on either 110V or 240V just by moving an internal Jumper.. Re Eu-QSLs. Oh, yes I'm quite a cool guy. After all , I confirmed 100 :-). I know that sometimes QSL via buro takes some time. There are many reasons to that. I would say that a reasonable time to get a qsl card from ANY place on this planet via buro is a year or two. But not 3 (or more years). I blame it on non-qslers. I've sent all my via buro qsls. Some direct still to go. And, oh yes I know that ea8 and ea9 are not in EU, but I presumed their buro is in EA. I guess I was wrong. Anyway, who cares. Sooner or later all wkd will be confirmed :-) Current standing is 121 worked, 100 cfmd.

Re: EU-QSL's. Compared to other parts of the world I must say that getting a card from an Europian country never has been a problem. EH8 (which isn't Europe) did very well direct. But as Ray PA4PA said at this pages, take some time. What I did in the past? I sent a card direct with $+SASE, one direct as a reminder without SASE and a couple via the buro. Maybe some overkill but unless very difficult non-Europe ones it allways have worked. By the way, Scandinavia Germany and Baltic countries are realy good ones with the buro! Good luck and 73,

Hi Bob, congratulations for the achievement,I am still standing at #98 confirmed (112 wkd).I can only say that for some EU countries I lost any hope. Just for comparison: YL,(conf. a german exedition'97), EA6(direct no reply but conf via Buro),EA8(3 sase no conf a EH8B.. and EA8/eh5...) EA9(conf direct EH9IB), ER (conf direct),EU (2 sase no conf) GI (conf via Buro),TA,GD,LX,OY,YU,ZB2 (all conf direct). In EU am still waiting for UA6,EA8,EI,ES,UT,HB9(!), except for EI(buro) I have sent mny Sase + $ but none yet.

Congrats Bob. But think your qsl problem is not a problem.Just be patient. Buro qsl's can easily take up to several years before the answer will come back. Have all the country's you mentioned confirmed without any problem, just some patience.

I'm happy to say that QSL for my 100th DXCC was received today. Shame on Eu non-qslers (C3, YL, TA, EA6, EA8, EA9, ER, EU, GI, GD, LX, OY, YU and ZB2 - all qsls sent but no reply) as this could happen much sooner. Thanks to all others. Anyway, it took me 2,5 to work 100 and I enjoyed every single moment of it (even endless listening to noise, neighbour's mast preamp, HV powerlines and TV carriers didn't spoil it, hi).

Hello SIX Family: Work this morning around 12:30z several VK stations via the long path over Europe. 5 VK4 contacts and 2 VK8 stations ( VK8MS & VK8AH ). First time ever into zone 29 !. WE ( PY's ) will look tomorrow again starting at 11:30z for some other possible long path opennings into VK. 73s.

A new low-power transmitter for the GB3SIX Isle of Anglesey 6m beacon has been completed, and is likely to be switched on for controlled tests very soon. The beacon will TX on 50.020 MHZ, and it's operation is likely to be sporadic until TX tests are complete. More details will be released in due course. We are looking for a vertical aerial for the beacon, and until we find one, the temporary aerial will be directional.

Re XU & DXCC: Latest info I have is that ARRL are being ultra-cautious with all the XW and XU calls after the incident with XW2A recently. They are requiring documentation for all operations. XU7ABF has not yet provided any, and there might be some question over whether he will - there's some unpleasant history (http://www.qth.com/dxshack/XW-DXCC.htm). XU7AAP will definitely provide documentation, if he hasn't already, so his cards should be OK shortly.

FH/TU5AX should be ok for dxcc...documents received by ARRL and all ok. Concerning digital qsl's....you don't have to receive or send them if you don't want...just like normal qsl's. Only difference...not valid for dxcc ( yet).

Bob,(VE1YX) Thanks for your e-mail re my announcement yesterday. 6M has been hot here on the West Coast--at least for a relative newcomer such as myself. A couple of hours after I posted my announcement, I was one of the half-dozen or so very lucky ops in US to work Mellish on six! We had Hawaiian tropo up thru 1296 all day long here in No. Cal. which helped VK9ML's two-hour weak but basically steady opening here. In the last few weeks I've also wkd KH8/N5OLS, VK9NS, TI5KD, HC8A, several ZL's, VK4's, XE1BEF, XE2EED & HWB...and hd CE's, ZP, LU, TG, KH6 & midwest backscatter...All this w/100/200w 2 el.Hex Beam/6M5X from my solar-powered portable atop Bay Area hilltops/oceanside locations. Thank goodness I'm self-employed! And as I type this Diana is reporting PY5CC, CX's & CE's agn on .110 via the local repeater! Hope things pick up for you in VE land. Quite a good aurora into IO93 this afternoon. Heard 10 countries including LC6OBT in JO49 and ES2QN in KO29DJ. Not to sure about F1ANN, but if correct he was in JN18 square. Again nice aurora today. Not much activity. From about 1600Z aurora moved and mid- to southern G's were audible. At the end from 1800Z only F2YT-JO10, G4HBA-IO80 and G0PQO-IO92 could be heard and worked. Very funny to hear these signals without the "normal" Scandinavians around! And (not for this page) I had my first ever aurora QSO at 432 MHz. with OZ6OL-JO65. All by all a good sunday without real DX at six. 73's and have fun,

If you go to the AGM section (or the ZD8SIX report) you can now see a photograph of the new ZD8VHF beacon antenna now in place on the pump house at the top of Green Mountain. Thanks to all for this. I hope that will mean that the beacon will still be pumping RF into ionosphere in the next cycle. I am really pleased to see the completion of the saga. Chris

RE:ZD8VHF, yesterday night at 22.00Z was in with a solid 559 countinuos signal, that I never hear so this year. In JN53 it is not as easy to hear it as in other southern squares, So I think the new antenna works fine. Mni thanks for your effort Johnny, ZD8VHF it is a very important prop indicator.

If you don't hear any EIs on the band next week it could be due to the fact that our electricity supply board is on strike. They're threatening to strike and have power cuts next week starting monday unless a pay deal is reached. I didn't think they could actually do that due to the disruption it would cause, but unless something is sorted out it could happen !!

Ade, VP9---GO FOR IT! Personally I don't need VP9, bu I know lots of people do. Operations there have been spotty at best over the last 10-11 years. VP9ID has 6m I believe but rarely gets on. WB2AMU has operated there but only 2w and a whip. There have been other very small, short operations there too, but nothing "serious" that I know of. Good thing about VP9 is that's it's nice WX and it's pretty much single hope Es to VO1, VE1,9,2,W1-4 and the top of the Carib. You'll have no trouble staying busy with pileups. Eu is also a definate possibility. 73 es have fun! Mike VE9AA

Since March 23th, Guy, FW5ZL is QRV 6 meters in Wallis island, with a IC 551 and a 4 el HB9CV. The QTH is HIHIFO, the Matautu airport, about 4 km from the town, so grid square RH86br cannot be too wrong.

Due to recent solar activity we went for a short Aurora-photography trip (42 hours) to Lapland. We activated OH2MZA/9 and OH2MAT/9 in KP38MV, and we checked a couple of locations in KP39/KQ30 for possible future beacons. Despite visible aurora, signals were lacking that far North, and we did not get any contacts. FW5ZL Wallis Island, a number of people have asked me the grid square for Guy FW5ZL,worked by many in VK recently. Some have been saying Guy has been giving out RH-86 which is not correct. RH-86 is in the ocean south of Rotuma (RH-87). The ARRL Grid Locator Atlas indicates that Wallis Island is AH-16. Someone must have informed Guy incorrectly to start with...73 de Jack.

Greetings from the end of the satellite link from my office to East Kilbride. My home link is down. Reasonable opening to south America last night and then - out of the blue - AH8A - 55 both ways for my best DX so far from here! Great stuff. 5B4,ZD8 and TR beacons audible at the time but otherwise band was quiet with the PY back in the noise. Hr's hoping there is more to come! After some problems with the original site at Exmouth, Western Australia, I am pleased to be able to advise that the VK6RSX beacons on 50.304 (and 144.576) MHz have been relocated to Dampier WA. The transmitters each run 50W to omni antennas as before. The keyer signs "VK6RSX Dampier OG89". The QTH is a few Km from where VK6PA operated so successfully during the last solar cycle.

Sorry not logged on for a few days, hence late reply regarding XU7ABF. The station who has just had this card rejected is Ken VR2LC, this has been confirmed by Charlie VR2XMT who telephoned him to make sure it was fact. Of course it can always be a mistake by DXCC. Time will tell as more of us get our recent upgrades back etc.

Dave EI3IO is correct in this. His License is not a CEPT License but an old reciprocal License (not issued anymore, Portugal was not in CEPT then)he was therefore authorized to work what was stated in the License: from 50 to 50.5 Mhz only from the Province of Algarve. So Dave's operations from Algarve/Portugal WERE PERFECTLY LEGAL AND GOOD. Keep in mind that my previous statements are correct concerning the actual status of 50 Mhz Licensing in Portugal. So all this recent operations in 50 Mhz from CT1, using the CEPT License without a special ICP permit (which is not granted for CEPT, as far as I know !) ARE NOT LEGAL.

Re XU7 & DXCC: Very good information tells me that the only query that DXCC has had with XU7 calls was with XU7AAZ - cards were rejected for a while but are now OK based on documentation received. As far as we know there has been no query with any other XU7 call including XU7ABF. Jani XU7AAP will raise this with the DXCC desk at Visalia and get the word from the horse's mouth. I can assure all those stations that worked CT/G3SDL and CT1/G3SDL in the late 1980s and 1990s that the operations were conducted on the basis of a permit from the CT administration. They were not made on the basis of CEPT T/R 61-01. I will provide a copy of the paperwork to any official body that requests it. But let's use these pages for more constructive activities. 73s

After missing the C9 yesterday because of QRL. Still have to work for a living...I didn't left the shack today. And no DX for most of the day. Just after dinner when I, frustrated, finally would pull the switch a BIG SUPPRISE...I was hearing VP8CMT! No chance to work him because of the much stronger meditarian stations again. Seems it was a scatter path. Antenna pointed much further to the west than I expected. And the path was moving. Last signals were heard at 260 degrees. It started at the direct path at 220 degrees. Best signal was at S2. Forgot to mention that EI7BMB was the best of today. MS contact with short and weak reflections. Had quite some problems getting everything out of it. And as usual when I had the roger report his rogers were for 2 seconds at S5. Anyway I can add a new square in the list. Hope for some more during the Easter weekend. Have fun,

Good openings here to south Pacific, countless VKs, ZLs, FO,FK,KH8. However at the other side, VP8CMT seems to switch on his radio for a few minutes after supper, makes a couple of qsos and goes to bed around 21 UTC. Dave EI3IO you should know what you are saying but Iam afraid you do not. Believe me in what Iam going to tell, I do know the Portuguese Legislation and ICP far too well. Portuguese HAM Legislation is straight in this matter, you need a special ICP authorization to work 50 Mhz and with a max. power of 20 watt, this authorization is only granted to Residents (NOT visitors [including CEPT]) and the station has to hold a valid Portuguese A License (extra class), the issuing of each 50 Mhz License depends on a ICP study in a basis of non interference with the Channel 3 and 4 TV repeaters, the License is issued to a single adress and you cannot use it for portable operations. example: I won't be legal if I use CT1EEB/p or CT1EEB/m in 50 Mhz, I can only use 50 Mhz from my Murtosa QTH as CT1EEB. Thats as far as it goes by quoting ICP, I also know they are changing some of this rules and I hope they can change this 50 Mhz limitation to something more flexible in order to allow CEPT and /P operations. For more informations please refer to the English link of the ICP homepage: http://www.icp.pt So, Iam very sorry to say that all CEPT operations in 50 Mhz from CT1 are not legal therefore shouldn't even be considered good for DXCC credit.

I'm sorry I have to slightly disagree with Jose EA7KW. What Jose stated may be today's situation BUT I have paperwork from the CT administation (now ICP) authorising CT1/G3SDL and CT/G3SDL at various times in the past and I have operated legally from IM56 and IM57 using these calls. As to Spain EA4BG obtained authority to allow me to use his /P station in both Ibiza and Menorca, hence my use of the call EH4BG/6 from a number of locator squares in EA6. I'm going to state my usual plea; please be sure of all the possible situations in a country before making general statements (concerning both the position now and in the past). Best 73s to all and I hope everyone can find a means to operate within the rules. And you often don't know today's rules until after the event!

Re 6M dx records. Someone was talking about breaking the VK1,2,3 records the other day from VK4. FYI the records are issued by a state by state basis in this country and there is one national record held by VK6JQ set in 1991. A record set by one state is not broken by an operator 2000 kM away in another state. The state long path record for VK4 for example is held by VK4BRG and has not been equalled, so the whole statement by the VK4 was a lot of hoo-ha designed to get a bite. The contact from VK4 to LU8 was made by three VK4's less than 2kM apart and is the best dx from VK so far in 2001, nothing more nothing less. It is not a new VK record; And at 28,100 does not beat the VK4 record set 12 years ago, It has equalled a path set a year to the day after it was discovered by others from the same state. But as for breaking other state records, you have to be in those states to do that, which quite clearly they were not.

Re. no CEPT 50Mhz countries: In Portugal you can operate with a permission at a 50 Mhz CT station but you can not go as CT/DL8XXX. I went several times to IM56 grid and always had a lot of paper work done by CT fellows. We signed always as CS0RCL, Loule Radio Club call. In Spain it is different as our special permit stays explicitly the prohibition to run the station by anyone else but the owner (not even by other EAs). This situation is hopefully going to change, we don't know yet when. 73

Great F2 opening into IO53. I never heard any ZR stations in JF Grid before. I uploaded a clip of ZR1ADI worked at 13:56z in JF95 and a clip of V5/ZS4NS (He was 59+ later)but couldn't break the pile up. Came home early from work and switched the rig on at 14.10Z Heard ZS6WB with 9+40dB and V5/ZS4NS with 9+20dB. Never heard ZS6 and V5 so loud here. Then at 50.120 a heard the last few words of C91CF and he was gone in the noise...could have been a new one. Next time better. Happy Eastern to all.

Just replied to a big batch of QSLs received from the bureau, incl over 100 from/to DL. I only collect new countries but am happy to reply to all QSLs. Until ARRL & RSGB etc actually promote electronic conformation for awards etc by electronic submission etc "real" cards are the only way. Call me old fasioned but virtual cards are taking us in the direction of virtual radio CQ from IP219.xxx.xx.xx.xx.!!!! 73 CU on one of the "real" reflectors (Es, F2, Au...)

For those that want to operate in countries that do not permit operation on 50 MHz under the CEPT arrangements or countries that will not issue a permit or licence under reciprocal agreements there is a possible third way. It can be possible to operate using a 'resident's station' provided that the use is in accordance with local regulations. For example I remember reading somewhere that an SV9 welcome visitors to his shack. I wonder if it's possible to operate from a /P shack albeit belonging to the resident! Good luck, where there's a will there's possibly a way! And how about some propagation for EI, I have to travel to YO to work anything exotic. Seems like I missed a good do last weekend. It is sad to see welknown skilled DX operators turn into chameleons when it comes to QSL-ing. They still like to receive QSL’s (they are in many cases still collecting QSL’s) but they today have NO interest to return this excitement, the joy and pleasure of receiving a card to those still collecting! How can we expect young people to enjoy this hobby and all it’s flavours when old-timers forget how it was when they were young and innocent? I still honour the saying: The QSL is final courtesy of a QSO. Personally I always return a direct QSL, with SASE, within a week after receipt and the rest of them via the bureau on receipt of the card. Some guys like EH6IF, G3JHM, HI8W, N4EJV, N4EJW/AE4RO, TA7V, UA1ZCG, UT3LA, VK4VV, VK6ZRT, and others, seems to have forgotten how their life was like when the started collecting cards in the past (or could it be that the green stamps give them more pleasure then helping a fellow HAM, Good forbid). SOB!!!

Two local operators, ZS6JON and ZS6ARQ leave tomorrow morning (13 April) for Northern Botswana & Zambia. They will arrive in Kasane, Botswana (KH22)on 14 April and will operate as A25/ZS6JON or ZS6ARQ on 14-15-16 and as 9J2LS or 9J2RN on 17-18 from Livingston, Zambia (same grid), returning home to Johannesburg 19-20 April. They will run 100 watts to a 5 element beam while there and will be operating mobile from some rare squares in Botswana during trip. QSLs via home call.

e-QSLs - sorry guys but this is the only way forward for QSLing, whether you like it or not. I do a lot of HF contesting and even with a good QSL manager, I would be QRT because of QSL cards - far too time consuming. I speak regularly to Fred C31HK on 20m., and he will send a QSL card eventually, but he just does not like QSL cards. Good to meet everyone at Bletchley, and Peter's talk was excellent, but made me realise what I'm missing this sunspot cycle ! 73

New one after some time. UFB propagation to S79 yesterday afternoon. Managed to work s79ks at 1749Z for #121 and s79dvl half an hour later. It was a bit tricky at the beginning of opening as signals were pretty weak, and I couldn't figure out the qsx, hi (had to switch the computer off because of carrier on .120, so no cluster was available). Then operators changed and this was confusing as he was not giving his call often (I noticed S79KS spots on cluster when DVL was working, probably from stations who could hear 'something in there' and guessed the call, hi). I'm sure some stations worked s79dvl and thought it was s79ks. He was in for about 1 hour with peaks up to 599. All at all, it was great day yesterday as here in JN86FJ as northern EU via Aurora and AF via TEP/F2 were workable at the same time. 7q7six/b was also audible before, during and after s79 opening. Regarding c31hk qsl. Sent 2 SAE with $2 in each. Nothing received (yet). Very rude indeed...

Peter, G4MJS, I do respect your point of view, nevertheless wait until you send a QSL card for an all time new DXCC Country for you and the answer you get is a e-QSL card with a note saying that the guy is going to keep the SASE (Dollars you send) and is not going to reply by the regular mail at all ! Some great openings to Eu/Af/SA/Pacific due to recent solar activity. Look today for more of the same. 5B4FL was wrked at 1522z Apr 9 BS with antenna on Argentina. Apr 10 brought in loud siganals from EH7KW, EH8BPX, EH8YG, CT3HF, CT3FT, CU3AN between 1740-1900z, this path was more a skewed path about 40 deg South of true. Apr 11 more of same ZF1DC was wrking Eu, along with some US stns, while I looked to paacific where AH8A, at the same time, was S9+20 signals between 1930-2100z. I think some southern Eu/Med stns are missing out, signals are sometimes vy weak on these backscatter/sidescatter paths. There may be more of the same for the next few days so watch for some weak signals. 4T1SIX/4 Lima, Peru was vy active yesterday with strong signals, watch today 50102 for Jack & Ramon. Re E-qsls. Of course they're not 'worthless' - they're not accepted for award credit, but that doesn't mean they're worthless - they look just as good on the shack wall as any other sort. Where all you want is a personal confirmation and a momento of a QSO they work just fine, and reduce the load on QSL bureaux and PO Boxes, as well as on busy QSL managers and DX stations. Fedor UK9AA has problem with cable TV which make QRM on 50110. Fedor monitors 50107.0 most of the time. So if you are looking for UK9AA try to call CQ on 50107 instead if you think that your signal can pass through. Fedor reports copying myself for few minutes April 11 but no qso yet. CU on SIX!

Short report from TEP zone: On short business trip I took IC706 and tasted real TEP propagation on Adriatic coast. What a difference only 400 km south from my home in JN86. Hire in JN83 is wonderful. Daily TEP is almost constant (V51/ZS4NS, ZS beacons) and after sunset start late TEP with nice dithered signals (5N, 7Q7,). And after 23 local time start opening to SA: PY, LU and for my great surprise CE0Y/W7XU. He was 579! I even heard KH8 but can read signal. Tomorrow I logged LU7XP, from GF55 in unexpected F2 opening, which was triggered, with incoming CME. During opening last very strong back scatter: heard all Europe. After telephone call I have contact via BS with my friend 9A4DA, 9A3JI my neighbors in home location. One more think is very nice on coast: band is so quiet so I can hear every little ping and so tiny signals. On empty band you can distinguish any difference in NF signal when RIG scanning. My suggestion (as you know): don’t change antenna, change location! RIG was IC706, 5-el Tonna 1 m over ruff 75 m ASL Best 73 for all 6 m funs. See you.

Hi can anyone help, I am looking to install a second beam and want to make use of an old but unused CDE AR40 rotator. Trouble is there is no lower mast bracket with it. I0JX: I wish it was that easy, Tony. I'm always reluctant to move, but the QRM and the in-band TV at my 9M6 shack can completely wipe out a frequency which was clear a few minutes before. Then there's the problem when another station starts a pileup on the same or a very near frequency and your pileups collide - not a pretty sight.... 73 Peter

Unusual opening yesterday 9 april at 16-16.30 UT, LU6XQ and LU7XP from FD55 (Tierra del fuego) popped out from the noise with 559 signals, they were the only sigs from SA together with strong EU bs signals. 73s Andrea

Hello all. I feel I must give votes of thanks for the weekends events. Firstly, Peter PY5CC. I unfortunately missed his excellent lecture on Saturday (I was taxiing Enrico and Angelo) Next to the OX2K group - again an excellent presentation, to Pierre for his attendance, to SM0ELV (I think this was right!!), to Dennis, to any other visitors I may have missed. Thanks to them all for taking the trouble to allow us to speak to them at some time during the whole weekend - well done. Well done UKSMG committee for having got the balances about right and produced an excellent weekend, AGM and meal. Bletchely was brilliant. The whole company present was obviously well pleased with the evening and the trouble taken. We can also thank each other for having made efforts to make the weekend so enjoyable for everybody else. It was nice to add faces to the calls. For myself I must give an additional vote to Kerry for all the help offered, to Angelo I2ADN and Enrico IK2GSO for making my weekend so special - thank you all and I, along with many others will look forward to next years event. I just checked in my SM5AGM Locator Squares World Atlas. ZS1AGF is only about 100km from the tip of southern Africa. Wow! That was some good pre-auroral enhancement.

Just recovering back home after an excellent weekend at Bletchley, spoiled only by car problems in both directions. Only managed to attend the PY5CC forum and The VHFCC presentations. A big thank you is due to Peter PY5CC for an excellent presentation of his 6m operations, together with some IOTA/HF snippets thrown in for good measure. His grid squares worked in Europe and North America drew many gasps from those in attendance. Thanks also to UKSMG committee for arranging such a great lecture. Looking forward to next years event already.

Chief VHF event of the weekend for me was reception of carrier of the Wagga Wagga TV outlet (New South Wales, Australia) on 46.240046 MHz, first time since April last year, and a rare event, one could wait another 11 years....Sunday 8 April 6.30-7.00z direct path. Expecting further openings between Hawaii and Australia 50 MHz, possible New Zealand TV, during the next week at the same time. Watch for these ones! 73 es cusn on 6m.

Great Sunday evening in JN53. At 2115z worked KH8/N5OLS and few minutes later CE0Y/W7XU, for my dxcc #158-159. Both signals beaming about 230°, up to 559; listened CEOY for over 30 minutes, KH8 10 minutes less. Incredible magic band.... 73's

Many thanks to the committee, and G0LCS in particular, for organising such a great event. The dinner was excellent and the company was even better. First I thought someone was announcing his QSL info but it was actually himself. 4X1RF got him and JN3NFQ. Earlier, KH8/N5OLS was heard 579 at the most. IC-551, be cautious when attempting work on this radio, I found that one fault lead to another and so on. Icom, like Yaesu & Kenwood, discontinue spare parts stock for radio equipment more than six years old too. Best tips for the IC-551, keep it covered (they hate dust inside them), keep it cool, keep away from sea-spray (mist) common with island operation, salt gets in and starts to rust (or oxidise) the internals out, dry joints etc. I often found intermittment faults were "cured" by a half-decent thump on the cabinet! Good luck!

ZD8KW...Very common problem with IC-551. I had one years ago and the photochopper circuit had been worked on before I got it. Never worked right. It was much worse when hot too! I ended up just frigging with the adjustment pots near the photo-wheel attached to the back of the VFO knob (inside the radio) This was probably not the best idea of a fix, but it was an ongoing thing with the 551's (AFAIK) and movement of diodes, adjustment of pots, and keeping radio cool seemed to be the best way to control it. They were very popular radios in the USA, so perhaps contact some of the guys on the Magic-Band or 50MHz prop pages would be a better way to attract more of these guys who can probably offer you better advice than I. http://dxworld.com/magicband.html 73 es GL with it. de Mike VE9AA

Congrats Raj !!. ZL1/2 also here 1950z - 2020Z along the northern part of So America path. 45 Mhz TV carriers were never loud (max s2-3) whilst their wfm 50.74/75/76 were just audible. VK videos also in for +1 hour. Good that Eliazar, CE0ZIS was bitten by the 6m bug, wkd him on .885/50111, unfortunately he has to leave the island today for Valparaiso. He will announce on .885 when back. PLEASE Pacific stations: stay in band around 1930-2030Z and call on 50110, that's that channel for ! gl to all 73

Amazing propagation. Heard Arliss CE0Y/W7XU from 1430z till I went to sleep at 1930. Worked him with 2 watts long path. Arliss worked every active 6m VU including the QRP ones. Then at 2 AM worked ZL2KT and Zl2AAA via long path. I beleive I was heard by Jimmy P29.. I was beaming over EU all the time..

Could any person advise me as to whether there is a JA Callbook on the net in English? Have many JA's calls here that simply do not appear in Buckmaster, QRZ etc, some have been active for a number of years now on 50MHz. Need to match these for JCC/WAJA data...thanks.

i shall be bringing johnny ZD8KW [ZD7WRG] to the uksmg AGM this sunday , so if anyone wants to meet up with him look out for him, if you dont know what he looks like just look for someone 6 foot plus with a suntan. zd8 beacon vertical :::, he is going back sunday evening to zd8 , if you guys want the beacon aerial changing then this is ideal chance to get a vertical [or whatever polarisation] taken down there and installed next week, so if anyone is able to organise whats reqd , he can collect it on sunday. just make sure it breaks down into 1.5m lengths . as a temporary measure i am prepared to buy a sandpiper fibreglass dipole at the rally if needs be. 73

re-HA I know that they do not have permission to operate 6m. I dubble checked the WWLoc with him. I said QSL via Call book. Best is to work them and worry later if they are legal. hi. p.s. WOW!!! LU8MB 51 via long path @ 14:32. Worked by VK4CP (28,105km), VK4KK and VK4JSR (28,107km). This creams the published VK2/3/8 LP records. Not a new VK LP record though:( That still belongs to VK6JQ//TL8MB (28,397km). Albeto was only heard for around 10 minutes. Earlier at 13:20 9M6BAA was worked 599. Tnx Peter for swinging your beam from JA. Two new ones in one night - things are picking up!!!

re. G0KZG/MM and comments of his recent activations, remember guys that he is actually WORKING on the ship, as well as working us when and where possible time permits. Recent RadCom and PW issues explain this and we should just be happy he is able to activate so many wet squares for us in the first place.

Nice opening today, ZS in all afternoon and G0KZG/MM wrkd for a new sq.... Regarding G0KZG/MM , give this guy a chance as he fairly new to 6mtrs and I don't think he's used to big pile ups as he is a keen 2mtr hsms guy !!! Remember we don't know what he is hearing at his end and he made a few comments about people calling when he was trying to wrk a specified station !!! re: /mm , must admit didnt work him today, why call g only and then decide to work iw sm etc etc, if you ask me, i thought it was piss poor,the station could of worked a lot more than that especially to go qrt when other uk stations were still calling, what was even funnier was to hear a certain g3??? still calling when the station had gone qrt,like he seems to do quite often and still calls even when told by other stations that he`s gone oh well only a hobby better luck next time guys 73

/MM: Strange this - I sat listening for about 20 minutes whilst he ONLY worked NON Gs. Then he called one G4F, didn't work him, called QRZ G, I called and called but he worked nothing but Is etc then went QRT. Very slow QSO rate and no control - BUT - it is just a hobby!! 73

Today propagation started at 10.30Z with strong signals from ZS1AGF from JF96. The whole afternoon ZS station came through. Untill 1500Z G0KZG/MM when he need to go QRT he was heard with strength up to 9+10 dB. But very hard to work. Low qso/hr rate because working country by country. Again G stations were in favor....Why is this allways happening? Come on guys be fair to the whole six community. Six is not a UK matter only! Best regards,

Very happy to finally hear a DX signal today. Bonus was that I worked it and it was a new one! My hats off to Arliss, CE0Y/W7XU for a new one. My 24th CQ-Zone. (country #104) One more needed for the new CQ WAZ 25 zone level. First DX here in NB since about mid to late Dec, not counting a single QSO with PY0FF in Jan. 73 all. Life is good! :-)

Peter PA2VST, If I remember correct Chris, GM3WOJ had at least 2 AR QSO's with ZS and CX in the last cycle.These were both of the same type - AR at this end linking to either TEP or F layer at the other. The MUF maps etc were flat for yesterday but in the moddle of a big disturbance who is to say what goes on!!!

The aurora was actually very visible indeed here in Aberdeen, Scotland (23:00 +). I rushed to the radio to see if the events would be as impressive as the sky and logged a very strong carrier on 49.740-750, but 50MHz seemed quiet! i think i heard one station on 50.130, but he was probably local and with a weak signal.
