Six metres should be called the 'torture' band not the 'magic' band - the 'torture' is looking at the DXcluster every day and seeing the Pacific DX that we cannot reach from here in Scotland - this sunspot cycle is a big disappointment ! About EME on 50 MHz: nice to see that some stations are able to be on the moon but with the 30 Watts HF (key down) maximum legal power in Belgium it would be hard for ONs. Best 73s and good luck.

Nice thread about lsn to EME signals, perhaps more people should try to lsn on the moon at moonset, there are a few big USA stations in zone 3 around which will be audible with a single yagi. K6QXY is very strong and can be easily worked by high power single yagi stations, stacked arrays require much less power, a single 15dbi yagi and 1.5k will produce echos at moonset taken into account groundgain..so start counting what can be done with 2 yagis (6db less power required for ur echos), as k6qxy has 4 yagis it should be fairly easy to work him, run VK3UM soft for eme budget calculation you will be surprised abt the possibilities on 6m!

Regarding EME. Yes, I think we should mark EME stations. Not
because they worked more DXCC but at least to have a view to
whom and what YOU are compared. Don't forget most toppers in all
kind of score lists are NO moonbouncers. By the way hearing
K6QXY, W7FN, K6MYC and W6JKV of the moon is not very special. Even with
a single 5 el. Yagi you can hear/work them. Good echoes and 73:>

EME 6m: regarding the DXCC and WAZ standing table: ON4ANT’s
reports made me think of that. In tables I remember there
was a star* behind the score stating that this operator
worked some countries via the moon. Bob W6BYA for example
always said he was the first W6 to work 100 DXCC countries
not using the moon. There was another W6 who had 5 contries
more. Competing against an EME station is a hopeless case
for 99 percent of us. So shouldn’t we put a star* behind
the score of stations who worked e.g. zone 3 recently?

Late yesterday afternoon was the first 48.25 SKEW PATH to Eu noted this season from here (FN43). Shortly afterward, EH7KW was reporting SKEW PATH QSOs into South America. As October approaches, the SKEW PATH potential will become more profound. Please be alert for early potential 6m paths to North America via this rarely used mode. Beam towards the equator- especially when we are under the influence of Elevated Solar Wind or when the IMF holds South! GL es DX!

Looked for longpath EU this morning from 1900-2145z but heard nothing, no indicators heard 32-40MHz from USA on short path either. Due to power black out I was off air between 2100-0730z on Sep 23rd, that's life in this part of the world. In the period 0742z to 1300z the following was worked: KH6SX, A35AD, VK4ZJR, NB6A/KH4, YF1OO, YC1MQ, P29KFS and 4W6UN/b heard. A35AD and A35AU have no dedicated six meter agenda and had to be requested to come of 10 metres and come to six for a contact. qso went on for a bit so he had almost dropped out by time i had chance to call, but no reply when i did.
not sure about HA and 6m, what are the legalities for HA and 6m now.

This 100kW TV TX is only 170kM NW of me and others in QG62 and is your best early warning indicator of propagation into the S.E. Queensland region!

Ref. beacon UN1SIX:I'm happy to announce today that in the hughe "white" Central Asia/China/Sibiria area("white" stands for "no beacon",hi)since yeasterday a beacon is working. Val,UN3G, some UN-radioamateur-friends and myself installed a beacon in 3400m a.s.l.(higher than 10.000ft!!) with the callsign UN1SIX (MN83ke) on 50.0247 MHz (output 12W into a GP antenna). The beacon was build by DG8EB/DB6NT. 30% of the costs sponsored the German DARC-Club (OV N38) and 70% myself. The organisation and logistics were done by Val (you can imagine it is not so easy to find a resonable place for a beacon in such a hight!). Val and his guys build also the antenna.
So we are happy that we could provide such a service for the whole 6m-family and we are looking forward to get some reports from "the rest of the world" (via e-mail).

Very quiet on six in the past 24 hours, some 12 JA1/2 worked 0318-0337z 22 Sep plus V73SIX/b on side scatter, P29 beacon in for three hours ex 0922z, no one raised. Malaysian TV 48.240/250 plus 20dB for an hour last night 1000z but MUF didn't get to 50MHz. No electric power this morning, black out at 2100z, could be back on in an hour or more. from Gaza has not received a 6m permit. They were told 6m
is not an amateur band in Region 1. They are still trying.
It should be possible to convince the authorities to issue
special licenses on a non interference basis!

A quiet but productive 21st Sep with numerous VK4, JA1, JA2 worked plus YJ8WR, P29KFS and 4W6MM (thanks for the new one Thor!) worked in the period 0418-1330z. A35AU informed me on 15 meters that he will be on six possibly tonight (0800z onwards) as the 50MHz antenna is arriving as cargo today on the plane. V73SIX beacon was heard 0418-0505z via side scatter. No indicators noted 32-40MHz from USA/Central America so far this morning (1900-2115z). Current T30JH log has been passed on to Adam VK4CP, if Adam has time he may post it on his site: http://web.one.net.au/~vk4cp. A relatively quiet 20th Sep with the band opening late from 1000z. Worked VK8MS (PH-57), VR2XMT (OL-72), VR2IL, VR2XRW, and JS6CDB (Okinawa). Heard BG7OH for near 40 minutes calling 'CQ' on 50.160MHz only 3X1 4X1 (SSB) at best, no response after calling him for 30 mins on both SSB and CW! Big Aurora last night. Wrkd: OZ/SM/LA/OY/PA/DL/OH Gottaway: YL3AG. Some BIG signals - OH9SIX beacon was S9+ with T5 note for 2 hrs in IO75! OY9JD sounded like he was a local! GB3RMK was fully Tone A until well after bedtime at 0100 - tired today! Hrd GB3MCB via Au and plenty of G's (M0BCG/G3FPQ etc) all V loud. Hrd JW beacon as well for shor time (52A) but no activity from there. Looking for more tonite - good hunting!

The autumn Trans Equatorial Propagation season has started again almost on que this evening (17th Sep). Worked ZD8KW at 2203UTC, 57 to 59. Signal had noticeable TEP flutter, almost auroral sounding. Many South American stations 50.100 to 50.170MHz. This propagation should occur nightly for several weeks.

Since making my reservation for Jamaica in Nov, I found out that a new manager at the Wyndham Rose Hall in Montego Bay has disallowed all radio operations from that location. Re 9M0F and comments on 10Khz slice of band, yes that's what happened, I came up on 50.115 as I have done for six months only to be shouted down by a many JA's demanding me to QSY. the noise from the operation split 50.115/50.125 was certainly more than 10Khz and would recommend a 5khz split not including either primary DX of 50.110 or secondary DX on 50.115, it made it very difficult for any other ham in the Asia Pacific region to operate on 6m. The problem was that conx were very good last night but they were wasted.

C91RF will not be on this evening. There were no good
openings for him so far by the way, all signals weak. There
is definitely a difference between ZS6 an C9. Rei is using
an IC706 and a 4 Ele Yagi 12m high. This already might be
at least 10 dB below the top ZS6 guns. Let's pray for

9M0F: If our experience from 9M6 is anything to go by, they'll have wall-to-wall JAs every evening. Very little chance of anything more exotic getting through unless they specifically ask the JAs to QRX. Do they have a 6m pilot? Also they seem to have nabbed a 10kHz slice of the DX window with a 10kHz split - a bit over the top?

Re AGM and VHF Convention. Best way is surely to migrate the AGM around the country from year to year. There are plenty of rallies held at various times throughout the year. Telford, Blackpool etc. All giving easy access to motorways and airports. Just a suggestion but if overseas people can only fly into London, they usually do so a day or so before the rally. Why can some of the southern lads not drive them north for the day? Also on a visit to Italy recently it was asked by several ops why not have the DXers Dinner at lunch time on the day of the AGM, that way more people get to meet up without having to stay the night at £50 a head for hotels and taxis on top of the travelling costs. Be fair move the AGM around a bit!

Looking back at the last cycle conditions should improve dramatically in the next 2 weeks. The best times are when the flux is dropping (not plunging) and with an A-index of about 25. Coming season should be better than last one (No significant F2-openings), but I'm not too optimistic. With a collapsing flux I don't believe it'll be better than fall '88 (few F2-openings).

Internet Announcement Page. So I am going to send him an
e-mail. Before you send him a mail also, please think a
little bit about foreign members and budget flights (I can
get cheap flights to London only). When I met Peter, PY5CC,
in Slovenia recently, he said he would like to attend the
meeting but he cannot in February because of the tourist
high season in PY5. Isn’t there a convention in August?
February and October are no good because of F2-propagation.

Re AGM: Actually, David, that's not what Iain said, not is it the case - the status quo is that we can still hold our AGM at the RSGB VHF Convention in February, and that we intend still to do so for 2001 at least. The issue is that the RSGB haven't yet determined the exact location and date. The input he asked for is for future years, after 2001 - whether we should continue with this arrangement or not. Much will depend on exactly what format the new RSGB event takes. Feedback is still most welcome, but lets' make sure we don't exaggarate the urgency of the situation. Re venue for AGM. Don't forget as well the travelling needs
for non UK based people so a venue reasonably accessible from some of the
UK airports supporting budget flights from 'centres of membership' might
also be considered. If venues near Gatwick, Luton or Stanstead are not
popular with UK members, Birmingham or Manchester could be
an idea. But I guess several European members use the tunnel!
At the end of the day it should perhaps be decided democratically
unless it is found that the advantages of colocation with another
event outweighs other issues.

Hi to all UKSMG Members. By now most of you should have received the current copy of Six News - issue 66. Under the Secretary Notes mention is made that the Group will no longer be able to hold its AGM in February, as in the past. The Secretary, G0RDI asked in his notes for members input as to where future AGM's should be held.
On a personal preferance I have always felt AGM's should be held at a central position in the UK. This to allow members from the North of England, and Scotland in particular, to attend such meetings. I do feel this to be a much fairer venue than having it in the South of England all the time. As for the venue itself I would suggest the Exhibition Centre at Castle Donington which is near to Leicester. This venue is well served by the motorway network. Some of you will know that Castle Donington is the venue of the Leicester Radio Club and hold their Radio Rally every September. For those who have never been there are facilities of every kind available. And I beleive there is more than one Meeting Room which would serve to have our AGM there. Members may suggest the RSGB HF Convention at Windsor as a possible venue. Although I have only been to this site on one occasion I found the whole conference centre not particulary Amateur Radio friendly. So by suggesting Castle Donington members will have, just like as at Sandown Park, a true Amateur Radio Rally to attend. And at the same time you will be able to attend the AGM and any presentations afterwards. Saying all this will require plenty of enthusiasm from members living in the Midlands area. We can not expect our members from the South to man the stand all the time. Fairs fair!! So I ask you all to consider the East Midlands as a possible venue for future AGM's. Hopefully your committee will accept this but I say again they will need the support from members in that area. Hello Sixers, I finally received my new QSL cards from the printer and am about to start the process of sending cards out and hopefully receiving confirmation cards in return. With regard to 4L0DXP, (one of the stns I was interested in), Tiny informs me that the log and qsl cards are not in yet but are expected. In addition to the list, Tiny mentioned a point regarding IRC's which I copy here for the benefit of all: "Many IRC's that I get from the UK are not valid because the post office has put the stamp in the wrong corner.
Is there a way you could inform HAMS in the UK, that when they buy an IRC they have to make sure the IRC is stamped in the LEFT box.
When they are stamped on the RIGHT side, I can not get post stamps for them as they are invalid". I guess this is valid for any Country in the postal union. Good DX to all

IC-756 problem reporting. Had just suffered failure on the
PA section of my 756. It looks it is an IC on the PA board
which is regulating polarisation voltages. Rumors say that
this device is sensitive to electrostatics. Indeed failure
was during heavy rain. Have anybody had similar problems?

Can anyone help? I am looking for a UK MS Access database expert & volunteer! I created the UKSMG database about 10 years ago using MS Access v2.0 and we have been using that version ever since because it would not compile under
later Office versions. We now have an urgent need to get the database recompiled to run under Access 2000 and I just do not have the time to undertake the task. The database is pretty simple using around twelve Access Basic modules and
macros and I believe the problem is that some of the names I used have now been reserved and I bet there are upper/lowercase problems! If you can help please make contact ASAP!

RE IC746... I have been using one now for about 2 years and I am very impressed with its RX performance both on HF and six. Most useful feature is the twin pass band tuning which can get rid of alot of qrm when used with the DSP. Only snags 1. the rx audio is muted when using the band scope. 2. deaf on 2m FM (not a problem for me as I dont use that mode. Hope this helps......

I'm just back from my FO0/F6DRO trip .6 m VERY disapointing from there. I caledl CQ's for weeks in all directions without results...Just once I found someone on 24Mhz from W2 , we made a CW test on 6m and I heard him very weak , that was all!
Despite not being an HF interested op I had to work on HF to get some ham activity during the trip.....Sorry
Anyway the rig is still in FO and my friend will try to operate from there .His call sign is FO3QX , he is running 100W and 5 elements F9FT , there's also some activity possible from FO3BM on Moorea Island

At my book I see that my cmos batt was 3,00V when in unit,

9j2bo is via a UK manager. G3?? I just forget, but did rx his car
in only several weeks after being extremely lucky to work him

information. If he says SASE is OK (this is only a 1.10 DM

C9 (Mozambique) finally for Central and Northern Europe:
DL6DQW will be operating as C91RF for the 3rd time from
7 Sep to 23 Sep 2000. Rei will be active on all bands CW
and SSB and he is very interested in 6m. He will operate
from two locations, the main one in Maputo, KG64. The
second one will be in LH04 or 05, an IOTA operation, from
15 to 18 September. On 6m he will use an IC706MKII and a
4 Ele Yagi. After 29 Sep he will try to activate Swaziland
for one week. He is a good CW operator. QSL 100% via Büro
or direct with SASE or SAE + 2 USD (airmail from DL is
3 DM) or 2 IRCs.

don gw0plp you should have been about last night, zd8kw was working loads of eu g and gw stations and novices , for over an hour.
i have sent approx 500 qsl cards to zd8kw this morning, so after end of next week johnny will be mailing qsls out,he has his picture on every one of them ,so no complaints please.i think there will be no problem with his confirmation , for dxcc awards via the arrl.

Hi TS-60S owners,
Just got a used TS-60S for my birthday today and am having problems with retaining
the memories and Menu settings in it.
First of all, the manual states the radio will NOT power up when the 12vdc power supply is turned on, but mine does. IE: I do NOT need to hit the power button for the radio to turn on.
(tho I can turn the radio on and off with the power button-it works fine)
Secondly, when I DO turn on the 12VDC supply, the radio powers right up with no memories saved, and on 51.000MHz FM.(its default qrg)
I know the solution would be to never turn off the supply, but I am wondering if the Lithium battery has gone dead, or if you guys think there is some OTHER problem. The rig will
soon be going into the car anyway, once F2 season officially starts, so it'll be wired direct to the battery, but is it a backup battery symptom or something deeper?

Bob G3ZEM is on his way to operate as ZD9ZM, from abt 5 to 25 September. It is mostly a HF and 160 dxpedition, but he will be monitoring 50.110.5 for CW using a DX-70TH and Andy ZD9BV's 5el antenna. Tom it looks like Moscow is qrt on band 1 so we will have to rely on the other 240 kW outlets for early warning. Most paths from here went south anyway and I used Black Sea outlets not Moscow to prempt openings. Usually when band was open to Europe from here 49 Video was low down and 48 E2 higher.
Hatsuo, disagree with 30 zone plateau, that could make it an elitist pursuit like the Honor Roll and many would lose interest! It is hard to imagine anyone getting 40 zones in this cycle except maybe JA or PY. But then everyone has one or two tough zones over the pole or on the other side of the planet. They havent made 160M WAZ yet let alone 6M!
