What an awful day! I'm back home after sitting in the departure lounge all day! Flight cancelled by RAF with a further 24 hour delay due to technical problems on the plane. Am seriously reconsidering the trip as there is no guarantee the flight will leave tomorrow afternoon either. Chris

Good to hear TR8CA again after an absence of 8 years!! Country 74 this year. Also heard VE1YX and VE1IN two hours later. So has the F2 propagation finally got to North Yorkshire. Some wonderful spots have been reported so guess I must switch the rx more often now. That has to be what it is all about. Hi. 73.....David in Harrogate (IO93).

Hi Peter/BCG-p and others. FB on your comments, made me laugh, and think of database's and contests, but that's another story. I listened to the FY pile up, heard one guy call and call and call. Called on the DX, even though he was listening 5up, called over QSOs, called over the DX indicating he was "5 up" Thank god i didn't need FY, but there was a huge amount of people who still did/do. As to the QRM station, he finally worked the DX, and asked "whats your callsign...." Makes you cringe, doesn't it. Here's looking to some more greate conditions... 73 de

oh dear looks like t88ba made typo error, he has an ft840 & ft1000 and not as he first said an 847,but they still need repair,he said there is a spare 100 feet tower he can put a 6m yagi on though, but has no 6m radio unfortunately , being it isnt an ft847. he would give 6m a go if he could find some transmitting eqpt, anyone got a cheap transverter to sell me and ill send it out to him ?[or you could send youreself].bill is 63 and had stomach cancer a while ago,so he isnt a spritely young lad!!. the man is willing , all he needs is some gear,e mail him if you like cacciatore@lineone.net 73 .

If You had the pleasure to work ST2SA: Some publications show a QSL-Manager. Sid told me, that he wishes QSLs to the address DR. SID AHMED IBRAHIM, P.O.B 1533, KHARTOUM SUDAN. BTW, never heard such a confusion as in the SIX-pileups last weekend – also never on HF. How many times has everyone of us worked DX-peditions never giving their callsign, just because we know they work on that frequency, or because someone else relays us their call, or because one simply reads their call on the cluster. Let us be pragmatic and avoid easy irony.

If you still wish to feel the rush and surf the pile-ups to call the rare country or DXpedition you worked last year or last cycle then consider this practical tip....connect a changeover relay to your antenna socket energised on TX and routed to feed a dummy load in the TX condition, then when you press the mic button you will get nowhere whilst hearing the DX at 5/9+ A bit like living in the north west! Have a good trip Chris, I promise NOT to call you as I worked ZD8LII back in 1992!! Of course if you hear me and feel the need then give me a blast!! Good luck those who need ZD8 for a newie

Re:DUPES . I have to agree with a previous contributor most of the responsibility does lie with the dx station. Recently I worked from IO44 and when I told callers that I would not accept partial or multiple calls guess what they stopped.i repeated everyones call back so all were happy. I only received one dupe from a F8 who was not sure his qso was valid and he very politely waited until the freq quitened down and asked was he in the log. as usual common sense and courtesy go a long way

DUPES are a problem. No DX station should park on .110 for any length of time. They only INVITE frustration. AS for guys calling you over and over and not understanding "up" or giving their call 3 or 4 times w/o a break (and it's always the loudest ones, or guys giving "last two"; It (I believe) stems back to a lack of experience or unwillingless to learn. Remember, many 6m guys have never been on HF, and have never waded through 20kHz. During most good openings to EU, I work many of the "top 6m dxers" (with pleasure I might add) with them only giving their call ONCE. FRom cy9aa and cy0aa the team had averages in the HUNDREDS/hour, as do many Dxpeditions, because guys/gals were giving their call ONCE, and we were allowed to respond quickly. Work the dupers QUICKLY, or announce every few minutes "no dupers". I believe a lot of the responsibility lies with the DX themselves. FWIW my 2 c worth. All in all a fun band, but not w/o frustrations unique to 6m. Mike VE9AA

A weekend of dream and nightmare here on 6. Saturday listened for more an hour the OX3SIX beacon in HP15 (very rare), lately VE1YX came out s9 but He was the only one station... Sunday was the most incredible day, I was qrv only from 10UT and for more than three hours 6 mts sounded like 10 mts... FY,YV,KP4,HK, and mny other at s9+ whom were chased by legions of hungry hunters, the pileups here were simply horrible got only 4 (3 new DXCC) qsos in 3 hours. Called K2RTH skewed for ages but could not break in. I lost 3 kgs of weight sweating on my chair, PZ5RA went qrt for Europe due to the "EU Mess". Yesss from now we can name the 29 OCT as the "Battle of Europe" HI! 6mt: pleasure and suffering...Tomorrow is another day.

From the DX end, dupes are frustrating and time-consuming. With 50+ stations calling me, or significantly more for the 'lucky' ones, the majority of whom are new, why should I be expected to waste time on an exchange with someone who is already in the log, when I know I will only get through at most 10% of the stations calling. I know a caller is a repeat as soon as I get their call, and there's no quick way (on CW) to tell the guy he's already in the log and should go away - it's quicker to go through with the QSO. With the advent of email and online log checking, there's no excuse for 'insurance' calls. I don't include other-mode calls here, by the way - happy to work stations on both modes, but please don't call me the next day 'just to be sure'. Send me an email instead, or a message on the DX cluster. 73 Peter.

DUPE. There are always two sides of an argument: After working a recent expedition on SSB, I did not bother to work them again the next 2 days that I could hear them well using the usual tricks (work them in CW, "hello you are very strong today in Athens", "do you like to put you in the cluster?" etc.). To my surprise (and frustration) I was not in the log when I checked their Internet site. The operators were using contest "rubber stamp" techniques, i.e. all reports 59, 10 QSOs per minute and NO CALLS and I obviously was "synchronized" with someone else in the pile-up and got his report as mine. New countries are not easy to come by as I already have many, so guys sorry but I may be not so sporty next time !!!

Alan: spread them out. Listen over a 5 or 10kHz window - but make it well up the band as you suggest. I regret that my findings are the same as yours: a good proportion of the crowd either don't or won't listen to who you're going back to. In many cases it's because they're not really listening to you at all - they have themselves programmed to send their callsign three times every time you finish transmitting, regardless of whether you're in QSO, calling someone different or whatever. At least if you've spread them out, then each one doesn't mess up your chances of hearing the station you're calling, and you can always tune a bit further up to find another caller. My 2 Ringitts worth. Peter.

I have to figure out a better way! In yesterdays pileup, working split helps. But what should I do when the 10KHz fills with so many stations, all similar strength, that I just get white noise? I tried "SM only", "P.. only", "G only" but it seems 50% take no notice. Then the only option seems to be to frequency hop...maybe putting it on the cluster. Or go have a cuppa. Or maybe go up to 50.300 and work split over 50KHz? Ideas please?

VE to VK4 via AU: Yesterday a rare but very exciting opening occurred when VE4VHF/B was heard in SE Qld (QG62 at -27.1 degree south) RST 549, then followed by VE5UF and VE7SL both RST 51A 52A with heavy qrm and AU flutter. Initial Beam heading for beacon was short path, but as opening progressed the beam heading moved towards the north and 'proved' to be a TEP extension from the AU event that the VE's were experiencing. Amazing stuff, not to mention a new country for a few VK4's (I missed it...JA's RST 599 answering my calls...don't you hate that?) First time I've hear AU, and particularly from the north pole.

Bang Bang FY/W7XU Big thanks for the new one. When the DX says 'CS go ahead' and you are XX or whatever, why continue calling. You are either deaf, stupid or both. More importantly, you are wasting your own propagation time. Think about it, brute force won't get you through with a good operator who knows what he has heard out of the pile up. Anyway good luck to all, and special hello to the T88 workers. I will remind my daughter when she grows up what she stopped me working!!

RE VE8BY beacon. It was also perfectly readable here in IO75 with auroral tone. I've heard it many times over the last couple of years on Au-E,but yesterday was the first time purely by aurora. Wkd 21 stations in W1,2,3 and 4 while this very strong aurora was in progress. To Alan 3C5I, heard you twice today for the first time, if that makes sense, once on ssb and later on cw. Your sigs are gradually creeping north.Heard the HUGE pileups on BS today and a weak copy on FY/W7XU but no other DX heard.Spoke to 9M2/JI1ETU on 28885 and he says he is running a beacon on 50085 from West Malaysia.

The best Eu opening ever here this morning, all on sidesctter. Turned on rig at 1214z and immediately hrd EA video S2 beam south and first stage preamp power off!! Didn't bother to listen furthur immediately went to six and full of HK/PZ/FY direct and Eu at 120 deg. Have never hrd Eu other then direct(only active this cycle on six). Anyway wrked OK/YU/YO/SV/LZ for new ones, 93 now, also DL/I//EH/EH8/G/F/CN/9A. Hrd but didn't call ON/GW/EI/PZ/FY/HK/9H. 30 QSOS WITH Eu. As far as dups go would rather wrk new stn or country but will not merely ignore someone, seems too rude to me. Maybe they werent sure of first QSO and I can always give directional CQ if I want. It is up to the dx operator to take care of this problem not the stn calling, he can say those for new countries only, etc. Hpe cu all tmw

Hear hear, George - there are many EU stations but only ONE 9M6 (only one active one, anyway)..... I know many people called me but couldn't get through the pileups today. I did some split (up 1) on CW which seemed to help, and was persuaded onto SSB for a while as well, listening up 5. That seemed to work too, but I'm aware that in going to SSB I'm leaving out those who don't have me at S9+. So I won't do it for long, I promise. Today started at 0747 with IK0FTA replying to my first CQ, didn't even get as far as my 'good morning' message on the cluster... there followed 181 EU QSOs, countries represented were I, 9H1, S5, 9A, Z3, YU, LZ, YO, EA, IS0, OE, OM, CT, F. And IG9 (thanks, Angelo). Last QSO was at 1013 - the opening lasted until much later than previous days. QSL via G4SHF as usual. Crikey! Can it get any better? 73 Peter.

Talking about repeats/dupes, I was "surprised" to hear, while listening to E30TA yesterday, "why do you call me again, you are a dupe?" ....this happened 3 times in under 15 QSOs! ..9E1S was 559 and quite easy to work in IO83, E30TA was 59 and took 10 mins to crack and ST2SA was 59+ and took 30 mins to work. The piles were mega, and it was a weekday, Does any 6m op work these days!!! Coupled with 8Q7QQ on Thursday, its not been a bad couple of days to go down with "F2 flu". Still heard zilch to the east this cycle and, Alan your time will come to the west in November I guess, when "we" sit listening to noise while your running NA.

Doesn't look like we can rely on the DX Cluster this weekend, it's a bit busy. Back to the old-fashioned method of listening to the radio to see who's on :-) I'll be on 50.145 +/- my own TV QRM from 0800z onwards (on CQWW duty until then). Please, no repeat QSOs now - I wasted 5 minutes of yesterday's opening digging out a call which turned out to be a repeat. Drop me an email if you want to know if you're in the log. 73 Peter.

6M DXpedition to Grenada (J3) in Nov- In case you haven't seen it posted elsewhere, I will be on Carriacou (part of Grenada) from 10 Nov to 22Nov. will have 100w and a 3el yagi. This is also a vacation, so I will be off diving reefs and sampling the local rum now and then, but will be on six as much as possible. Listening/calling on .110 and .125 and will QSY up whenever the band opens. The beam will stay with J37LD who is six capable, but not terribly active. Call will be J3/W1AIM. Lets hope the propagation gods cooperate on this trip. See you all in the pile-ups...Chip W1AIM

A typical Friday early afternoon 11.29z at work of PA5EA. Willem, PA0HIP, calls: "You've got to go home now, things are getting hot: E30TA and ST2SA are loud !". Few minutes later a tall guy runs to his car and drives home rally stile (120 km/h on the 80 km/h road ...). 12.45z: running up the stair, switching on all available equipment, and at the same time calling Willem: "What are their frequencies ?". 12.46z: E30TA in the log. Next ST2SA. Oh no, he only works Germany, @#$%^ ... 12.56z: finally made it ! Phew ..., bring in the beers. (BIG thanks to Willem). After kissing my wife who, was in state of total disconnect about all this, I drove back to work fairly relaxed (adrenaline still present in my veins though). Is this real life or just madness ? Have a nice weekend everybody.

I'm not sure whether to post this here, but here goes anyway. It's for Timon PA9KT, but I won't use all caps, I have the narrow Inrad CW filter in my 920, it is fine and helps with very weak sigs sometimes but there is some 'blowby' (just as there is reported to be with Yaesu ones) but it's usually noticeable only when sigs are very strong eg on 40m.

Timon PA9KT. I just bought a (used) TS-60 and it receives from 40-60MHz (not modified). I thought they ALL did, at least in NA as this was one of the deciding factors before I purchased it. Dear Friends, Very sad news - Algis LY2BA passed away last Saturday..... He was a very big SIX meters enthusiast here in Lithuania and he was mostly QRV on this band. He paased away in his garden some 20 km. from Vilnius in his radio shack. I hope many of you remember his call and many of you have a luck to talk to him on the band last few years. It is beyond expression this lost for me and all his friends... Remi LY2MW #1920

Re monitoring of TV, both conventional rx and tv rx is useful as, if strong enough, the picture can often give away the source with an on-screen ident. Also spE prop tends to give good picture quality while F2 gives very smeary and sometimes inlockable vision due to multipath. All good info to while away the hours of noise....73

Nick: No good just moving 1kHz - the pileup of JAs for K5K is around 10kHz wide, centered on 115 and the one for VK9CZ is wider. It's pretty busy here in DXpedition-land. Didn't make any difference at all today because there wasn't anything to work :-( I'll stick with 145 unless anyone thinks its a really bad idea since the advantage of being in the 'quiet zone' outweighs the disadvantage of missing the occasional casual caller. The JAs seem to find me there, anyway... Have now got the second antenna up and upgraded feeder, so I should be a bit louder, and more importantly should have better ears.... Peter

Adam, thanks for raising this. I chose 115 because it's the nearest frequency to 110 that isn't plagued by video here. But I'm not at all territorial about it. Also, I've had comments that 115 has problems with OK tv when there's Es in Europe. VK9CZ / VK9CX are also using a good chunk of space, calling on 125 and listening 130-140 - so no room for me in there. I'm tempted to move way up out of the way - 145 maybe - but that will inevitably reduce my chance of being happened across by those who are not specifically looking for me. Of course, that could be seen as an advantage. Comments welcome... Peter

What is it with DXpeditions and 115??? Currently we have 9M6BAA (who attracts rather large JA pileups) and K5K both active on 115. Does anyone else in this region see a fundamental problem here? Last night PA0HIP was reporting 46.1717 VK TV "strongest ever" and we had 59+ JAs responding to our CQ EU CQ EU calls(?) No chance of hearing anything underneath! Peter, 9M6BAA, I know you were active first but are you able to move up band slightly (as I doubt K5K will QSY)? Only trying to avert a potentially bad situation! Cheers

Thanks for the feedback re: noise cancellation- especially that received via e-mail. It appears that the schematic posted on that URL may require changes. The issue seems to be to inhibit the sense antenna from hearing weak signals in the direction of the noise while hearing only the noise- otherwise signal cancellation will also occur. Am I correct on that? Prefer e-mail response so I don't clutter this board unless issue is important to most. Again, many thanks. Best 73 es DX...

i use the ANC-4 here when i have tv hash from my neighbour[s], the noise can be up to s-7 [switch mode psu noise]across whole band,i use a short boom 7ele[16 1/2 feet boom] at 32 feet high as a noise aerial and 8ele [34feet boom] at 70 feet as main yagi.the 7ele is around 1-1 1/2 s points down on 8ele. i can eliminate the noise with both yagis pointing at the noise and hear stations in that direction i wouldnt otherwise be able to hear. like alan says ,you do need a noise aerial capable of receiving the noise almost same as main aerial. there is insertion loss with anc-4 in use , the input swr of anc4 is 1-1@50mhz put it this way,any station that gives me an s-1 signal reading ,i can hear, whilst i am beaming at s-7 tv hash. the mfj 1026 isnt any good @50mhz plus input swr is high above 30mhz. anc 4 will take 150w thru power and no probs fitted between rig and amplifier , vox input is fitted also as std, they are around Ł179 ukp from waters and stanton or buy from usa.73 ian

I could not live without my noise canceller (ANC-4) here. I really should not be on 6m, firstly because of TVI and being adjacent to a 48250 TV, secondly because of the S9 hash that I have to put up with. The noise canceller reduces S9 hash down to S1 or S2. The secret is to have a good noise antenna pickup, and patience to adjust the noise canceller often. I have 2 articles on its use, what to do and what not to do (I thought they were on the UKSMG site, but I cannot find them so I will send them to Chris)Phil FR5DN, it should work for you too, provided you can sample the noise well. The ANC-4 is rated to 60MHz and works well. I believe the MFJ is rated to 30MHz. Let me know if anyone needs an email of the 2 articles.

Hello Friends. I have VERY high noise level from arcing insulators with the 15Kv power lines closed to the house. It's a real problem cause i cannot even copy decent cw signals on the bands. Qrm is covering bands from 160m up to 70cms. I wonder if any real good solution exists with noise cancellers. Sorry for the stations calling me and that i can't read. I hear you but it's hard to copy. I know i have not worked new countries when conditions are good, because of that noise. I even have to close the station when it's too strong. Very nice backscatter cdx to africa last night. ZS6TWB was strongest at 340°, while i had to beam 290° to listen ZS6DN, amazing... GL and vy 73- Phil

Try DSP to hear those very weak cw signals!! There is an excellent DSP program by Vittorio, IK2CZL and Alberto I2PHD that works wonders! It is Spectran 4 and is found on http://padan.freeyellow.com/ It is realtime audio DSP with about a 1 second lag. Plug the rx audio into your PC sound card - it works on most sound cards, not just SoundBlaster. You can spot signals, set the bandwidth and listen in. For example, I could not hear even a trace of ZS6TWB/B this evening with my rx 500Hz band width, but knew the approx frequency. The software showed me where it was, let me set a 50 Hz bandwidth, and it was easy to hear the familiar call letters of the beacon. It is not suited to fast qsos but is excellent for weak signals. Try it!

Seems we are getting Eu video vy late past several days, after 18z, so please look for southern US later then a normal morning(US time) opening. BTW PJ8/N4ZC is active, told him to look Eu 12-15z, he is a fine cw op, especially if signals are weak. Will have to ask him his schedule for FJ/N4ZC, but he changed to six in middle of gigantic Eu pileup on 20 meter SSB(guess I made lots of friends, but did work him on Es on 6). So if you think band is open, call him on low bands & he will go to 6. GL to all

Into EU at last - 6 x DLs, first was DL3RBH. Signals are very very very weak, below the noise for most of the time. Spent a long time guessing letters in callsigns, think we got them all right in the end. Need callers to be very explicit about what they're sending, only send your call again if we got it wrong, otherwise send lots and lots of RRRRRs so there's no doubt about it. Nothing heard for 30 mins now, but we're still trying. 73 Peter 9M6BAA & Rich G4ZFE

Hi Peter. PY5CC, regarding VP9 and six-metre operation, Ron, GW3YDX told me the day before he left for VP9, (16th Oct), that he would monitor 28885 for the possibility of good six-metre conditions. If conditions looked favourable, Ron would drive to his friend location, VP9ID and operate from there. I think he has a 100w rig with him. VP9 would be new one for me on both six and ten metres. For the video-listeners: the 48.239.6 video reported widely today is in 9M2 - an indication of propagation this way, but 1000km short of me across the South China Sea. My local video (Limbang) is either 48.251.3 (which it was today) or 48.249.5, depending which exciter they choose to use at the transmitter. I'll post what tomorrow's lucky frequency is when the time comes. The Limbang transmitter 'only' runs 13kW (10dB less than the 9M2 transmitter), so if you hear it at any strength at all, come and find me :-) 73 Peter the Hopeful.

Frustrated at a fruitless pounding at the EU window (except for a '119' report from 5B4FL), I had just listened to around 2 hours of absolutely nothing other than the local TV. When a sudden JA opening showed up - S9+ signals all the way. Several JAs called me with QRP - lowest power I recorded was 500mW (and it's a 4000-odd km path). Another 100 QSOs in the log. Heard 4FNQ and 4ABW but couldn't break the eastern EU pile. 73

Re 4CX1000A: install a low-value non-inductive swamping resistor across the input grid tank circuit. This will increase your drive power requirements, but may stabilize the amplifier. Start at 200 ohms and work your way down to 50. Good luck!

Hello there!! I built a 4CX1000A PA from the specifications given in the 1984 ARRL handbook. Even though all the parts are original I am experiencing some troubles with the operation of it! With a 3 watt drive power the output is quite low but present!! However when using 5 watt I get no output. The 4CX1000A instead starts to occilate, and the 1 Ampere anode high volt fuse blows. If anyone can help me out on this one, I would be very grateful. Details on the building of the PA can be found at: http://hjem.get2net.dk/OZ1DPR Best 73's de Bernd OZ1DPR

XT2OW had a remarkable number of 1001 6m QSOs (474 CW, 527 SSB, including 51 dupes) with 772 different stations. The W, S and SE part of Europe was favoured (propagation-wise!): 340 I, 82 F, 69 DL, 64 U.K., 58 EA, 51 S5, 13 PY. The DX highlight was definitely YJ0DX. QSL via DL7DF, see http://www.qsl.net/dl7df.

Nodir, hire is my experience with long coax and preamplifiers. Los properties of cables are in declaration ranges only for new cables. Outdoor cables can double its losses after same time. I always tested cables with power meter .You can just comp ear power on station and on the end of the coax. I found that preamplifier on antenna helps if you have long cable and noise is low (same days and some directions) In the populated location, and if you have TV carriers (terrestrial or F2) advance is minor. I can sand you schematics for PA if you wont to build one. It is not so hard. Best 73

Nodir, 40m of RG213 has about 1.4dB signal loss at 50MHz. This is not enough to make a significant reception problem, IMHO. (because at 50 MHz there will be noise which will also be reduced 1.4dB) I suggest noise is your problem (assuming the 746 is working OK). Local TV Tx, Computers, Line noise?

RE Rception. It seems that I have some problems with reception. Using 7 el yagi 40 m long RG213 feed line and IC746. Interested if adding mast mount preamplifier can help me? Regarding the recent post about a UKSMG beacon (GB3SMG??)on 50.020. Please note that GB3SIX on the Isle of Anglesey is already registered on that frequency, and although it has been qrt for a whils due to having to re-locate, it WILL go back on-air as soon as the new mast has finished undergoing construction. I don't think it would be advisable to have two 6m beacons in the UK on the same frequency, like the CT beacons on 030. Can someone please confirm what the UKSMG is proposing with GM3SMG pse?.

I have become vy reluctant to post due to severe abuse in the past plus stations that do NOT have prop will jump on the freq and begin endless CQs. Hopefully, the spot did help W1OO. Our first real F2 of the YEAR here today to HC8GR, 50.113MHz. I missed the brief opening the other day. Was very dissapointed that many WELL KNOWN 6m DX-ers were working him, who already had worked HIM, or other HC8's in the past. Others with smaller stations, or marginal prop did not get a crack at him. Yes, I needed him, and even if I didn't, I STILL would feel the same way. I worked PY0FF earlier too, but only after hearing him give many CQ's with no answer. Please, guys, give the other fellas a chance. Someday, there may be prop in the OTHER direction, and I am sure you'll appreciate knowing, WE are just listening so YOU guys can have a crack at the DX. 'Nuff sed. Mike VE9AA

A quick plea on behalf of myself and anyone else who uses DX cluster spots to drive statistical analyses or automated warning systems - PLEASE don't spot things you can't hear. This practice messes up the stats, and wakes people up in the night unnecessarily. If you do need to swap information about a DX station which you're not currently hearing, how about using your own call in the 'dx station' field, or using the DX station's call but an impossible frequency (like 50000.0) which can be filtered out. I'm talking about spots like '50123.0 XT2OW Is he on yet?' or '50.109 3C5I NIL in IO91'. Thanks for your consideration....

Friday the 13th!!! Well it wasn't that bad.Got a phone call at QRL from PE1MCD who told me XT2OW was at S9. So took the rest of the day off. Raced like Hakkinen to home. (did it in 30 min! normally 45.) Switched on the rig and...NOISE. Thought it would be a real 13 day. But than at 13.20Z XT2OW started with a in noise signal and came up to S9. 1 hour opening now and still able to read his sig's. Not a bad day at all! 73es,

Hi, I am happy to see that XT2OW was worked by mny N-EU ops, the propagation towards XT yesterday was exceptional: after more than am hour s9++ in the afternoon, they came back in the evening at 19,30 and when I went to bed at 21.30 they were still there with a steady 55 -57. Congratulations to the crew for focusing 6m this way!

He will be running 100 watts and 5 ele yagi. The call sign will be the new one obtained for this trip FO0SIX. Who would think that working 100th on six would be so hard :-) I was stuck with 98 countries for a long time (thought it was 99 due to comp. logbook error, hi). After missing a bunch of new countries in just a few days (ET, ST, XT, KH6 - heard 'em all but couldn't get through), worked 5V7VJ for #99, and today finally made it to 100. I just arrived to my QRL when got the alert from 9A8A. Drove back home (a new lap record, hi), and worked VK4FNQ for #100. He gave me only 41 but who cares. I wonder what gear is he using (ant, pwr) as he was s9+ here and reports he was giving were pretty low (one-way propagation? big power?). GH all! Bob.

Things getting hot..Yesterday and after hours of propagation of KH6s to EH7,I5,JY,5B( but NOT to SV )over LP,at 1130z a rare afternoon opening to JA over LP realized. Many JAs heard ,calling YJ0DX on 50130 who is at almost the same bearing over LP,up to 559 sigs ,but no chance to break in... No JAs heard at the same time over SP. This happened a few times only during the previous cycle. The annoying thing is that so far this cycle only ONE JA heard over SP,instead of thousand worked from SV during the last one... 73+GL to all.

Re breaking pileups. Spare a thought for the perhaps-inexperienced DX operator - a pileup of southern Europeans might be beyond his wildest dreams on 6m, he wants to work everyone who calls him. It takes some nerve when you finally get propagation to a new continent to ask the people who can hear you to QRX while you listen for others who probably can't. To that end, if I'm lucky enough to get propagation to Europe from 9M6BAA next week, please let me know if this situation arises - I'll be watching the European DX cluster like a hawk. And if I happen to ask *you* to QRX while I listen for another area, PLEASE do as I ask.... 73 Peter G4MJS / 9M6BAA (from October 17th).

ref g5rv on 6m,none too special, i have heard people using 45m long wires with success, why not build a 6m longwire using q-tek 6-1 balun [ok on 50mhz with 200w+]and 73 feet 3 inches of wire one side and 4 feet 6 inches other side of balun [ for dx portion ], feed with 50 ohm coax , around 1.4-1 swr across band @ 20-25 feet high, acts same as 3-4 ele yagi for directivity but in 2 directions [of wires],very good side nulls.as much gain as a 3 ele too and no tuner reqd, will also tune [with atu] and give good results on 80-10m, i built one and used on all bands 80-6m /portable, you can buy them cheaply from *radioworks *in usa , but easy to build, only req the longest wire pruning if freq too low[1" at a time.]

Hi All Just got back from 2 weeks in the UK so am back watching 50.110. Have a suggestion to make - if any of you up there in Europe hear 5Z television carriers suggest that may be a good indication of a possible opening to 5X ( - pls note propogation to ZS or 7Q etc means little as far as opening to KJ60 goes) then you might like to try sending me an SMS by e-mail to my mobile phone and if I am around I will do my best to get near the radio. You can do this by sending an e-mail to: 077700010@mtnconnect.co.ug Worth a try anyway..... Graham

I am starting to look at dates in December for the C21JH (RI-39) 50MHz operation, however, I would like to receive some feedback from Oceania amateurs if there is a 'real' need for C21 on six?? As 10 to 14 days is quite an amount of time to spend on Nauru just for amateur radio and expensive at that. I may consider cutting the operation back or combining it with another T30JH operation. Comments would be appreciated, especially from the JA's who will have the most regular and best path to C21 on 50MHz. Need C21???? Then by all means let me know, no feedback will mean nobody wants it and I can spend my December holidays in VK. 73 de Jack.
