Bill, if they weren't already in QSO with anybody on that frequency (in which case you would have been rude to them )carry on - you were hearing - they were listening. Next logic is to call CQ DX on 50.XXX (on a clear Frequency)and to be asked to QSY because somebody somewhere wants to listen / or is already listening on the frequency - whatever next. OK if both DX are on the same Frequency and do come up at the same time - a problem - but sensible people can sort it out.

3c5 beacon hrd on .092 this afternoon-s92 beacon frequency.Shortly after,3c5i was hrd clg cq on cw with no takers.I called him on cw on his frequency .0963 and hrd his qrz?At this point someone(?) asked me to qsy because they were listening for S92.Should I be expected to cancel my qso with 3c5i or try to complete it?Any opinions? If, like me, you await an OH0RB QSL, Kari OH3RB says 'The cards will be ready within a week and the mailing of direct cards starts immediately'. He also says "Wer kann nicht Kartoffeln essen, muss auch Popkorn vergessen" - I hope that isn't Finnish for 'you'll be lucky!'

anc-4 available from nevada in portsmouth,look in last months radcom, they are advertised in there. mfj1026 absolute waste of time on 6m [ i have both units]. anc-4 very good for 6m ,input swr is 1-1 , but you need a yagi as a noise aerial capable of picking noise up at similar sigs to main aerial[s]. nevada have ad in last six news im sure.73 ian

Unbelieveble heh....Was home tuesday and wednesday. No new countries and only one single hour propagation to UN & EY. Now on QRL and it started all again. I know , Chris WOS, no bad words at this page. But how can men describe this cycle? BAD? Solved my problem with the noise: It originated from what we call a light dimmer. (thanks for all the mails, friends!) The neighbour replaced a halogen lamp by one with higher power which made the thyristor and the ferrite beads to be saturated. This caused the noise with over S9 over a distance of 90m. - Poor weather made poor tropo condx on 6m in NAC contest. Only managed to work 14 stns :-(. Jaap, Yes you can, Portugal is a CEPT member. If you're going to the Azores the callsign won't be CT3, but CU?, depending on the Island you go. Aurora struck again yesterday. Finally some signals again, cause we're not blessed with too much F2 in JP50. Things started around 19z and lasted about 20z. The only interesting thing was GW4VEQ that peaked at about 270 degrees. Things were quiet until 23z, but not many stations on at this time. I heard GD0TEP, but didn't bother to call him. EI3IO didn't copy me. GW4VEQ called me again at about 0130z, and I thought the band was almost dead. Then at about 02z LA6WEA came in, very heavy distorted on aurora. OH9SIX also came in on aurora, peaking at 330 degrees! The aurora lasted longer than 02z, but it was time for bed. Countries heard/worked LA, SM, OH, OZ, ES, YL, SP, DL, PA, G, GM, GW, GD and EI. The strange thing with the auroras lately, is that signals have been peaking at qtf 270 degrees. Is it because the aurora is so far south? Anyway, recordings of GD0TEP, GW4VEQ, EI3IO and LA6WEA will be put on my website at www.qsl.net/la8aja.

Copy of recent Email from N5WS for information:Hi Peter, Thanks for the note, and I am sorry I missed you during the opening. I had quite a large number of stations calling.....all about the same signal strength....making it difficult to pick out stations. It was great fun here for the short opening. Worked PA, ON, DJ, G & GW during the opening. G stations were: G0DCS, G3LAS, G3FPQ, and G3IMW (& GW3MFY). G3IMW was by far the strongest out of all stations here. I have worked G3FPQ previously when I was living in EM12pw in the Dallas, Texas area a number of years ago, so it was nice to hear him again from this QTH. Yes, I am located in grid EL09ru, about 20 miles North of San Antonio, Texas. I run about 600W to a pair of stacked 5 element yagis (76'/89'). The Eu video (many different frequencies) has been into this area all week now, but usually for a very short time period. It seems the best time here is between 1500-1600 UTC, but sometimes it peaks even later. I hope to have a chance to work you sometime in the near future. 73, Russ Seibert - N5WS

Hello, Only worked W1JJM (559) on Friday, hrd 3 more from U.S.. W1JJM was copied again on Saturday. That's it. Suddenly someone in the neighbourhood switched someting *ON* and I have S9 (almost white) noise on 10m and S7 noise on 6m in the U.S. QTF. There are only two houses in that direction. K1SIX, yes qrp six dx is exciting, like 1 watt FM [freq modulation] on 52 MHZ from mobile into 1/4 wave whip while doing 110kph in the far north of VK6 [near VK6JQ qth] in the late 1970's early 1980's, the JA stations were full scale deflection!! this was evening TEP, and night after night as well, cheers from sunny OF77XX

Even with the weight of all the evidence (a Gazillion to one) - OJ walked free. Give it up! Many TNX for some fun QRP QSOs into Eu today with six watts! KB3CWS has offered a loaner amp with 12 dB gain- This places me 9 dB below normal DX Hunting ERP (really only needed to be competitive). It should do the job. Many TNX for all the offers of help when I didn't really ask for any!! Greatly appreciated!!! I should be back with normal ERP capability ~ 60 days or so. TNX again (I must admit that the 6w out is quite a bit of fun on 6m though!!). Best 73...

Observation. Over last few magnetic events it is claer that if the coupling is of a northerly direction then the predominant mode is AR E's and if southerly is AR - as is at present - northerly coupling and AR E's (or E's?) in SM and LA TV 48.256 / 260 ) to me. Anybody else notice the same - remember the full week of AR E's that occurred not long back?? - yes of course there was AR - but not as big as the figures would have suggeseted. Any views?

Was nice to hear EU and w7's in here again today. Didn't call too much as many still need EU countries. Most exciting happening of the day was HEARING V73AT on Kwajelin at 2100z. No QSO as he was quite weak but was still pretty cool to hear DX from that far away. Pacific is a long way from VE9 :-)

Copied a very weak signal (RST319) at 13.15z on 50103.6 CW today, calling CQ with no takers. The callsign could have been W7IV, QRZ.COM says that this station is in Arizona. The band was open to VO1 at the time, which seems 'in line'. I wonder if anyone knows if this station has been QRV on 6m or may have hrd it too. He was in for a couple of minutes max. 73

Andy, commiserations re. the JA but a smiliar thing happened to me, got an e-mail from a JA asking if I got his report, I had part of his call but not the suffix nor report so no QSO, a pity as it would have been a new one but, at the end of the day, you've gotta be honest with yourself. You'll work them next time (in 11 years!!).

GD0TEP why not just say it, some JA either got your call wrong (if thats possible) or tried the same old, "let's end a card scam" and see what happens. I put it to you that several of the EU guys have tried the same thing on this way with blank cards into VK in 1989 and more recently a well respected EA station tried to prise a 4W6 card out of me for a 6M qso when it happened to be open to YB. Nice try if you can get away with it. Honesty is the best policy regardless of the standings list, congratulations for being so frank.

Nice to work HC8N today for dxcc 126, I have been working on my 2m eme array but progress is slow as I need to keep my eye on 6m!Still not bagged TS7N and could do it on MS I think.Do they make skeds?Also Tom I agree re spots but the best one is a certain M1 who has told us that the band is dead in IO93 50 times in the last 60 days!He even syas this when the band is not dead!Can someone have a word.... 73

I worked a new dxcc today at 15:57 UTC 5C8M in IM64. I believe he is also CN8WW. I did check my qlod log books and newer worked any DX from to 10 Nov till Feb. The six metre band stays magic.

I wonder what I heard yesterday? I was tuning around the beacon band when I heard AM transmission over TV QRM. Frequency 50046 QTF 090. First there was news transmission (VOA?) from US and then music that sounded like it was from India or neighboring countries. Probably it was a mixing product of the VOA and Russian TV. The new FT-1000MP MK-V is looking more appealing, especially with the rumored FTV-1000. Does the MKV have transverter ports/connections like the MP model? Also, does it have an option to display 50MHz on the VFO? I assume so, as the MP model had a menu option, but you had to get into the menu everytime you wanted to turn it off/on. Two frieds from me want's to go next year to Friedrichshaven to field-check there qsl cards for six meter DXCC. But since they collecting cards they changed callsign, so there are 2 calls on those 100 cards. What is necessary to show to the field-checkers that both calls belong to you. AFAIK the lowest tv tx frequency here in DU is on Ch2 with video on 55.25 and sound on 59.75. The most powerful tx is here in Manila, line of sight to me unfortunately! Let me know if you can hear the video...

K1SIX, Bob, there is a data sig on 43.650 which is very loud when we have a path to SE Asia. So far as I know, there is no definite ID on the sig, but it is widely believed to originate in DU. Have never heard anything about a TV sig on that frequency.

Congrats to all who have worked to get TS7N QRV on 6m. Now that 50MHz seems possible from here, I wonder if any group is planning a trip for summer 2001? At 2400km from here, I cant see myself posting a "bingo", "Yesssss", "Easy", "begging" or a "Yipeee" on the cluster just yet! Just for the record it pays for 6m Ops to regularly read the HF bulletins like 425DX OPDX etc, as TS7N has had good coverage in recent issues, along with its sponsors. Pete IBI, I seem to remember the FT920/keyer issue mentioned by someone on here a few months ago? Was it Adrian G0KOM, the answer is something to do with menu options EL1 being set to EL2 or visa versa. 73

Attention FT920 owners - I'm trying to program the memery keyer and get the SSB part working ok but when I try to program the memory for CW message it all gets corrupted . Re TS7N: We should probably take this to email... Ken, for a variety of reasons an expedition may want to 'keep its powder dry', and not release information about their plans too early. It's up to the managers of the expedition to decide when and where they publicise, we don't interfere with this unless we're asked to. As UKSMG committee member responsible for DXpedition liaison, it's my job to ensure that when we agree to provide sponsorship, that the plans the group has for publicity (as well as many other areas) seem adequate - and in this case the TS7N group easily met my criteria. They have released info to the usual sources - I just checked back, the first mention of TS7N on OZ6OM's newsletter was dated 19th March 2000 - which was several months before they even approached us for sponsorship. 73 Peter

I disagree - if the UKSMG is funding in part or total an expedition or other then It should make use of its announcement page and tell the UKSMG membership of the dxexpidition before the event and not during or after. Hello All: With great disappointment I must tell you that 6y4b has been terminated by management at the resort before even getting on the air. Although bldg engineering ok'd the setup (after the "villa" I had planned to use turned out to be unuseable) the bldg manager ordered me to take everything down ( 2 2mtr yagis for eme and the 6 ele 6 mtr yagi) because of interference complaints-even though I had not been on the air! Forgot the dog and the XYL went into the shack, plugged the antenna, swith on the rig and....Noise, arghhh!! The GB3LER 50.064MHz beacon (located near Lerwick in the Shetland Islands - IP90JD) is now operational again. It is running 30W into a folded dipole at about 100m above sea level, and should be as good an auroral indicator as it was before. Willem,Please Re-read my last post. It was re: "VE8SIX/B" (not VE8BY/B) they are a whole country apart. One is out East here on Baffin Island(just above VO2 and West of OX) and one is Waaaaay out west near VY1 (that one is QRT for repairs or whatever. Firstly, what a simply fb zd8six story!!.......Secondly, be very very wary of a few of the recent dl-ve8six/b reports and the like! I have seen several similar reports lately. Those reports are FALSE! The beacon keepers report it was QRT at the time of reception!! These reports seem to MOSTLY stem from over-eager "newbies" who cannot copy Morse Code, and hear a signal on their radio and look up on their trusty beacon list and ASSUME that they are hearing a beacon 1/2 the world away. 9 times out of 10 you'll see it is NOT the big-gun 6m guys that are spotting these very far away beacons. Why don't we see any (actual) long DX QSO's taking place? (because there is NO prop!!) Just saying don't believe everything you read. Some reports are relayed from HF, some are just well-meaning enthusiastic reporters and a small number are just from jerks. My 2c worth. GL DX 6m and thanks for all the well-wish Emails on my #100......BTW, have already worked J3/W1AIM for #101.....Just gets better and better. Soon I will be caught up to my friend Py5cc....big HI HI!!....VE9AA FN65rs in Cccccold NB, Canada...Brrr

OX3SIX and OX3VHF where into JO65 on november 10 and OX3SIX again on november 11. We are presently working on a 144 MHz beacon for the OX3SIX site. The only thing that is missing is a 4 el yagi wich can tolerate 30 kg of ice and windspeeds at 200+ km/hour. Any help or input on the antenna will be highly appreciated.

Nice opening into Central and Northern Scandanavia this evening. Switched on at 22.20z and heard the following stations. OH6HFX in KP14, OH8MTM in KP23 (a new square for me), LA6WEA and LA6NG in JP66, SM3GSK and SM3NRY in JP82, SM3KJO in JP92, GM7PBB in IO68, SM2XJP in KP04 and OH3NWQ (did not get locator square). GB3LER Beacon - update. During our visit to Shetland for the recent CQ WW SSB contest, I visited the GB3LER beacon site - the antennas fell down last year, and the 144MHz TX has been removed for repair. I tested the 50.064MHz Beacon and delivered it (with folded dipole and feeder) to local amateur Frank Sinclair GM4SWU who has found a new site for it just S.W. of Lerwick - so hopefully GB3LER will be back on 6m within a few weeks/months. 73 Chris

The arrival of the anticipated coronal mass ejection from the major M7 solar flare of 08 November appears to have arrived over 18 hours earlier than originally predicted. Worked VK6DIR for a new country on six this morning. VK6DIR Signals were into IO83 for about 30 minutes and peaked 5-7/8. I arrived home from 8R last night. I wish I could have worked more EU from 8R, but I never had a good opening into northern EU from Guyana. I also wish I could have had a better QSO rate during the great opening from FY to EU, but the QRM was so intense that it was very difficult to pick out calls. Thanks to all for the QSO's. Yesterday was great day. We worked WAC in a few hours. Countries worked in our mourning opening include CT, E, EH8, I, IS, ON, SV, 4X1, 5B4,9A, & 9H. Band was open to N. and S. America all day. Excellent peak-cycle propagation yesterday! The first opening started at 09:40 and went on until 12:07 and covered lots of north European areas for a change. An amazing amount of QSB; 59 one second gone the next! New countries included G and GI (hooray!). Looks like I missed (but I was QRV) and opening to California as I saw that ZD7VC had had several QSOs at around 20:00. All I can say is that I published my telephone alert number and it wasn’t used by the K6s! I was CQing throughout this period I believe. Later in the evening though it opened up long path again and I added one or two exotic callsigns such as FO0PAM in French Polynesia and BV2DP in Taiwan. Many s9+ stations followed these from JR6, Okinawa. What a fantastic day and got to bed at 02:00! Countries added: FO, BV, KP3, 9Y4, and HI8.

Re DXCC Bill NC1L is obliging with interpretations. I think the rule about mixed mode has an additional qualifier but I didn't pass it on, as I didnt think it important. Many VKs worked EK0JA Russia cross mode CW/SSB es VHF calls and it counts for the mode YOU transmit after all its your dxcc. FYI XF4L cards were marked 2 way FM mode in 1989 although we all worked them on SSB or CW. Most people only have a mixed 6M DXCC which by the way is not marked with any mode, it just says 6M and the dxcc print out just lists 6M.

ref dxcc, so tell me this, if a station uses a computer to decode cw during a qso, then surely this is rtty/cw mixed mode ,not cw only and not allowable for dxcc credits[if thats what the rules say],hands up those who only use theyre EARS . a qso is complete when each station satisfies the minimum requirement for a qso, which means sending/receiving and acknowledging two items of information not previously known. it is a silly rule to state that a qso isnt recognised when both stations are communicating with each other in legally recognised modes. i see there are 3 variables for awards ,cw ,phone,mixed. this could very well be DISCRIMINATION against DISABLED people also ,a dumb person/amateur maybe able to hear and read and write ,but not be able to speak,but they could send cw and listen to ssb .i am hoping for the arrl sake that a MIXED dxcc award means mixed ,ie 2 WAY QSO any mode combination. if it doesnt then the rules need changing now and not in X years time.

Nick a "mixed mode DXCC" allows 2-way SSB and 2-way CW QSOs in your application, but not a QSO one-way SSB and one-way CW. Thats my understanding anyway ..?

Re DXCC Rule 1, a) says: Mixed (general type): Contacts may be made using any mode since November 15, 1945. So SSB/CW should be ok for eg a mixed 6m DXCC.

Reference VK3OT's comments below and DXCC rule #4. "cross-mode contacts are not allowed". It might be worth those on DXpeditions and those calling to avoid SSB/CW QSOs. I think FY/W7XU made quite a few SSB to CW contacts when into Northern Europe last week, and I've heard others doing it recently too.

Thanks to all 106 stations that I worked last night on aurora and aurora-E. I got three new countries ew, uy and ly. Other countries were f,gw,gm,on,dl,oz,sm,sp,la,ok and pa. 19 qsos on cw and the rest in a ssb pile up at 50250 or 50236... Great Au-E/Au opening last night. Think I worked most of N/NE EU! Hrd most of scandinavia all at once! JX7DFA was an absolutely HUGE signal! 59+40 full scale on the FT847! Best Dx for me was EW6DI for a new one. Was sure I had also wrked LY before but checking the log I had not so that was a new one too! Shows you need to check carefully - must use the computer log more! Very strange opening - some signals pure AuE and some then very Tone A. Great evening anyway. Auroral Es from me (JO54) from 330 degs over north to 90 degs. Worked a good number of stations. Nice to hear JX7DFA so strong. Some signals varied from AU tone to a clear tone within seconds. I had a special look to the NorthWest, as American beacons were strong on 28 MHz at abt 2030 UT. I had no copy on OX3SIX. We had a small hole in the clouds and I could see the Aurora right above me too. Moving up the antenna by 3 m also seems to have improved my system performance. I use a MFJ DSP filter in the noise reduction mode for AU reception - believe it or not - it gives the weak signals a *kick*. 73 de Christoph DF9CY

Re UN1SIX: I was happy about the top propagation during the last days esp. from Central Asia to Europe. And I was also happy to see that some DX'er had the time to spot a report for UN1SIX. This was a good reason for me to do a "small expedition" on Sunday to the beacon in 3400m hight for control reasons. Of course it was not so easy like 2 month ago when we installed the bcn. Snow is there (higher than 1m already) and the temperature was around -10 grad C during the day. But at the end of the 12 hours walk I was happy because all is working very well and I hope the bcn will do the work for a long time. The best thanks for me are your reports which a have seen on the internet or which I got via e-mail. So far I got reports from JA, VK (tnx VK3SIX for collecting the reports) and Europe (esp. SP, DL). What an evening. Best opening since summer sporadic-e in JP50. 89 QSO'es tonight, LA, SM, OH, OZ, GM, G, GW, GI, LY, YL, ES, EW, S5, DL, PA, ON, SP, OK, JX, HB9, UT worked. OX3SIX, JW7SIX, OH9SIX, LA7SIX and SK3SIX heard today. Started as a big aurora, then came the auroral-e, and finally it sounded like summer sporadic-e. Does anyone have a good explanation of what happened today?

To VK6RO/HB9QQ FYI What is a contact? A recent contact between VK6 and HB9 was in doubt due to the inability to exchange signal reports. Here is the legal drill from the DXCC Desk. Hi Steve: Confirmation data is shown in DXCC rule 4. It reads: '4. Confirmation data for two-way communications must include the call signs of both stations, the Entity name as shown in the DXCC List, mode, and date, time and band. Except as permitted in Rule 1, cross-mode contacts are not permitted for DXCC credits. Christoph, DF9CY: Thanks for the information about the frequency limits.It is pitty that ERP and/or TX power is limited in certain EU countries.For more than 30 years our power on VHF has been limited to max 50W at TX output.This situation has been kept until 1990s.Now 1st-class amateurs can get max 1kW output HF and 6m license on no TVI basis.We should pass the field inspection of local bureau of Telecommunications/MPT.Most of active stations buy IC-PW1 or VL-1000 for the inspection, and some stations use them for driving CE-5000/6E or more! Determine who they are by your own ears on the band. I hope you can get similar high-power station license, too... Sayonara.

No where does it say in ARRL rules that you have to exchange signal reports. Only information previously unknown ie callsigns. If you two are happy, then its a qso, its not up to us RO.

Got the UNs and EYs this weekend, but my TX pwr is too *little* for QSOs to JA and 9M, which I heard at good strength. I could raise 9M2TO to a QRZ ... VK8RAS/b (50.047) was in for 1 hour. 3C5I/b was heard for more than 3 hours yesterday. Also I heard HP2CWP strong and copied ZD8SIX for 5 min. Yesterday night a good AUe opening gave me a number of new squares. Saturday I managed to raise my antenna 3m higher, which made the noise pickup a lot weaker. 73 de Christoph (www.df9cy.de)

Hi Kerry G0LCS.UT5JCW into JA on 06Z Sunday.First, he appeared on around 103.JAs rushed on the frequency and might be difficult to copy.Then he suddenly disappeared,he himself QSY to 101 and declared UP! Very exciting sunday afternoon, i worked country number 45 after 21 years on six metres, SP6ASD on cw, also some DL. 0hh, so close! Almost a 2-way with IK5MEJ. Pity too, that would have been my first QSO with EU. It's storm season here now and we were in the middle of a nice lightning storm - static crashes galore. The JHV at 17mH was useless - picking up too much rubbish - so much for grounded elements! Whereas the the 23' 7 el at only 10mH (with insulated elements) proved better in this case. Still, it's great to see the F2 coming South... finally. Now if we could only stop the JAs responding to our CQ EU calls!

Asia Video Question: This morning for about 1/2 hour had strong 49751 asia video. Along with this, when video was S9 had T9 signals every couple of Khz about S3-5 strength. Is this inband video that I was hearing? One stn hrd, no ID, may have been BS. I had hours and hours of S9 Eu video, from all over Eu, through 49740, but only CT1DYX & F6HBR weakly inband, little dissapointing to say the least but tnx Arliss, 8R1/W7XU, great op in big US pileup, for new one. From 9M2JKL, I worked 15 Eu stations yesterday 0947 - 1024Z. 3 ONs, 2 OZs, 8 PAs and 2 SMs. Luckily, the local TV QRM on 48.240 was unusually low during the opening. I hope this will happen again today. The operation of VK9CZ and VK9CK Cocos Keeling closed at 0130 on Nov 4th. Worked about 25 countries and 500 QSO's in the 14 days. Only one 20 minute opening to Southern Europe unfortunately. However the icing on the cake was QSO's both FY and 8R1/W7UX at around 16500Km. Almost nil propagation during the daytime hours Cocos time. Nice opening on AuE tonight - loads of LA/SM/OH/ES. All big sigs. Some Au prop around as well - hrd some G/GW's (VEQ etc) with Tone A sigs. Some real wierd warbling on CW sigs though on AuE. Hrd OX3VHF beacon again at 559. - is anyone ever QRV from there! Its one country I need and I have hrd the beacon so many times. EY8 and UN3 big sigs today as well for new ones. Not a bad day! Hi all. Really good opening into JA, worked; JL1MEX, JF2VNU, JA2XW, JF3QJR and to top the day off; DU/GM4COK and UN6P. Heard and lost even more though, too much video and static rain qrm. However, checking Buckmaster for qsl details, JA2XW's qth is shown as; Siapan, Northern Mariana Islands, grid BK76GA. What I don't understand is that according to my map Northern Mariana Island is KH0. I'm not really sure where I have worked, (not too good at geography). The call sign is correct though, as I have a good recording of the qso. Any comment or information would be most welcome. Unfortunately, there is no email address for JA2XW else an email would have been sent by now. Any help would be appreciated. No VK's yet, where are they all hiding? 73's & good dx.

More JA's this morning, than iv'e ever heard before, just turned the vfo through 095-120 and it was a mush of weak cw (all JA's and all together). Spread out, and don't like one station get on 095 calling CQ with a great signal, then announce you are listening up, up was a huge wave of other qso's going on. Work split cw yes, but up 1 not "up"! So still need JA!!73 Sixers

Chris, please do not forget my callsign... You are in my tape.On this evening (0930Z-) we had extremely strong scatter path toward OH, SM, OZ, G, GW etc. Unlike recent SC opening toward I, 9H, SV, 9A, S5, LZ, today's QTF was deep and around 210-220 degs. First, OH2BC on 94.8 kHz. He was so strong like super EME station that my S-meter has been driven to S7. Some JAs sent 599! SM7FJE on 140, OH7PI on 131.5, OH1VR on 97.4, SM5UJZ on 90.5 kHz. I am sorry that I could not get reply from a GW station on 105.2. He was lost in the pile-up... All station who made QSO with me on six, thanks. Sayonara from QM05BR.

Another good day on the radio! It opened at 20:03 with SV5BYR and stayed open until 01:44. Looks like I’ll be lacking some sleep while hear! The major event of the evening though was a HUGE HUGE HUGE long-path opening to Japan that started at 22:32 with JF3GPS and lasted until the band closed. All the signals were s5ish and getting calls out of the babble proved to be troublesome, however I filled quite a few pages of my log in the time. I also managed to work Han, JE1MBJ, the UKSMG’s country manager. It didn’t seem as good as yesterday into Europe and the Caribbean though. I am sure that Europe come in at a consistently funny angle. When the band opened, Nick 5B4FL called me and he peaked on 60o whereas the direct path is 30o. This seemed to apply to all the Mediterranean stations. Long path to Japan was as expected at 240o. Still nothing during the day from the east. These late night openings are causing chaos with my beer drinking! I thought 6m was a sociable band with openings limited to daylight hours. Help! Please ship me some decent food! Chris

To the stations who worked D44AC last November the 1st: Operators arrived on Sao Vicente yesterday November the 2nd and the 6 meters yagi is still in the way. At the time of the unprobable opening D44 to North EU there was one from EA8 to SP, ES, OH, SM. It seems that one of the EA8 ops travelling to D44 couldn´t resist to arrive on Cape Verde to go on "the air"

Wkd A45ZN at 1247/3rd also S21YJ at 1333. I think I heard JY8?? but very weak, may have been JO8! There was some commercial FM on 50.100 with tone. Sounded middle eastern but I'm not sure. It sounded like a taxi firm! Anyone else heard this and know where it's from? We had a typhoon yesterday so no power all day, I was on car battery. Power back this morning at 5am.

Another job for Super6mman! Been to the top of Green Mountain (what a drive!) and found the remnants of the ZD8VHF beacon. The antenna and mast are lying over and rusting at 45 degrees in a right mess. Tracked down the key to the pumphouse and I'll have a look at the beacon itself over the weekend. We need to get another 5/8 vertical down here ASAP - can someone buy one please? Beaconing on 110 (YES 110) but dead at the moment. Chris

A fantastic four opening! I spoke with Jose, EA7KW in the afternoon and he said I would start hearing Italians at 20:00 and that is exactly what happened. After twiddling my thumbs all day, my first 6m QSO came with JY9NX at 19:53 with strong TEP flutter. My last QSO came with Mike, J87AB at 00:39 with over two hundred QSOs between. And wow! What a roll call of 6m stations they were too with many saying “thanks for a new country”. So what are the notable calls I worked, all the ones I need from home! Loads of PYs and LUs, CX1CCC, CX3AN, WP4LUU, CE4WJK, CE3SAD, CE3BFZ, HP3XUG, TI2ALF, TI5DX, ZP5RPO, ZP5PT, YV4YC, KP4EIT, WP4G, PY5CC (of course), LU8MB, 8R/W7XU, ZF1DC, OE3RGA, and in the middle of the European pileup Alan, 3C5I and Graham, 5X1GS. Plus of loads of southern Europeans! I had tremendous problems picking calls out of the mush, I’m sure that people were wondering why I didn’t have a higher QSO rate. I spent most of my time split but this didn’t seem to work. Even more disappointing, I tried CW and maybe it was poor CW or just the very strong TE flutter but I just could not get the calls! So I gave up and went back to SSB. What else did I notice? Well, the thing I suppose, the ill-disciplined rabble! Many were just calling continuously over a QSO this made life very difficult. Anyway, last night made up for all the hassle getting here. Chris

Just rcvd this email from Koji T88TU... Thanks for the contact on six with T88TU from Palau. At 0914Z , Ian- M0BCG replied my CQing on SSB / 50110. It was the 1st ever contact G-T8 on six . After this short QSO on the calling frequency , I moved my frequency to 50114 and sent CQ on CW . I wished to work as many contacts as possible even the limited short period operation while I stayed there , but we had just one opening for 15 minutes between EU and T8 this time . I worked only G's , 1 on SSB and 8 on CW .

Hi All, worked SU1SK @ 13:25 today 57 for #145 (2 new ones in 2 days and loads missed !!!), just after he had worked OY9 !!! Only heard him work one other GI and one CT then gone. Was was on top 9E1S on .100 SSB, suppose I shouldn't really have worked him there :-)) Anyone know the QSL route ? Will upload an RA clip to my site soon. Calling CQ on dx frequency happens all the time Nick, also in PA. It doesn't matter what frequency the DX is....alway's some stations especially CQing on that frequency......frustration maybe....or just bad operators.

Took yesterday off work (legally, hi) in hopes of a repeat performance of Tuesday. Was NOT dissapointed! 7Q7RM, Z22JE & 3 FR's. Couldn't be happier!!! 3 new ones in one day rarely comes around here. Never did hear TR8CA or 5R8EE that were working futher west. Understand W7RV worked FR1GZ for a QSO of ~18,124.5kms for a possible world record??? Grid Locator for 9M2TO is OJ05, while that for 9M2NK/9M2JKL is OJ03. I hope to work many EUs from a club station 9M2JKL on 50.107 this weekend. At 9M2JKL, we are running 100W into 7 element Yagi. Please understand that it is very difficult to hear weak sigals here due to S9 TV QRM. Now I am checking out the clusters from office. What a frustration!!! Finally we made it, Peter! MNI TNX for 9M6BAA and my #153. Peaking s7 here for a few minutes. During our QSO the TV transmitter at Limbang on 48249.47 was 20 over here. A good journey back to UK!

The TV transmitter at Limbang (the local one for me) has decided to celebrate my last day of operation by coming up on 48.249.47 instead of the usual 251.3. It has quite a distinctive 'warble' to it. Please let me know with a DX Cluster spot if you hear that carrier... Thanks. Peter.

Re European opening and dupes, can I ask the EU's here why you are making dupe qso's during long haul F2 paths like with VK2QF and asking LOC LOC,, for my money get it off the qsl card, for the record in next few weeks, NO DUPES and NO REPEAT QSOs. VK2QF worked 9A1, 9A3, DF3, DL1, DL2, DL3, DL6, DL7, DL9, DJ2, DJ3, DK2, EH3, I0, I3, I4, IK0, IK2, IK4, IK5, IV3, IW0, IW2, IW5, IZ5, OE3, OK1, OM3, OM4, S59, S53, SP6, SP9, SQ9. Comment: Unfortunately several dupe's, "LOC? LOC?" during the next qso, one Italian said No VK, JA only. JM49, JN62, JN75, JN76, JN79, JN88, JN98, JN11, JO51, JO59, JO92, KO01.

Last day today - lets hope things are better into Europe than the past few days. Not a single signal heard yesterday, despite the VKs, VR2s, BDs working all over the place. Funny stuff this F2, eh? Will be on 50.145 as usual unless some DXPedition lands his pileup on me (again). There's plenty of competition around here - A5, ZK1, ZM8, 9E1 on the way to Europe. Hope to get as many as possible in the log before I have to pack up and head off for home. Will be back in the UK early Saturday, although looking at the wx reports I think I'd rather be staying here... 73 Peter.

TO Ws AND JAs: when an opening occurs, noone of us (living in a city) can afford seizing a frequency and working there as many stations as possible: the locals will kill you due to interference problems. The suggestion is simple: we have one full MHz, why are we all herd to one edge of the band? This morning I had a nice JA pile-up at 50.250, and the locals could still work resadonably well 50.100-50.180. Conclusions: JAs and Ws check the band up to at least 50.400. Tnx

Hello all: Please note that the QSL route for the upcoming 6Y4A operation (11/13-21/2000) will be direct to W3CMP. 6Y4A has been assigned to contest stations in the past. Although it has been dead for a couple years,I've been told that the "old" QSL route, via WA4WTG, is still listed in various QSL databases. That route will NOT work.
