This evening was chaoos around the DX window...no one to blame just happens that UK was in the middle of openings to TF and FH etc. Loads of people put spots on the DX cluster with acid comments as well as those on the air! re TF3 and FH on same frequency. It was so easy to put right, no one seemed to think of reporting the problem to either DX station....I simply called the TF3 and told him that half of the callers on 50.130 were for the FH...he thanked me and QSYed to make it easier for the Italians and south Europe etc. The only "lids" are the ones who moan and do nowt!

Hello Six Family: Again a BIG openning to Europe. The band start at 18:30z until 20:50z. I work 240 stations from all Europe. YZ4ED ( Bosnia ? ) for a new one ?. What a big PileUp! I think that was the best openning ever form me to Europe. Very sorry the stations that i didnt work, but there are stations that i work more then 10 times ago that always call me again, give me the name, locator, city, etc...!. Maybe next time i can work you for the first time and give you PY as a new country or grid!. 73s.

Finally some nice condx in SM3 (JP73GI). During the last
weekend all of europe came in, and I aslo worked EH8BPX and
CT3FT on the 27th. Later during the night I heard both
OX3SIX and OX3VHF but no OX2K.
Best DX worked on the 28th was OD5PN,4Z5AO but I heard very
short a station giving his locator as KH62 but I never got
the callsign, I guess it was Z21KQ. Then of course I had to
take a buisness trip monday tuesday so I missed OX2K that
was worked from here.
But tonight (31th) I worked LU9AEA and LU9APM >12600km, my
best DX ever. The big problem from up here is to break
through the EU pilepus with the extra skip up to me in JP73.
Well best 73 and listen for stations from north SM during
openings.

Propagation in the North lives! Late last night, I worked OX2K and also KL7ZZ both. OX2K=gp47ta, and kl7zz is bq50 or bq60 in the very northern part of Alaska (Prudhoe Bay).
Also heard during this time period 0230z-0430z were ox3vhf/b gp60, ve8by/b fp53, ve4vhf/b en19, ve4/kg0vl/b en26, ve8wd/b dp22. Does anyone know if the TF boys EVER stay up very late looking for NA? We hear ve8by & both OX bcns on a regular basis here, especially after or during even mild AU sessions. Sure would be nice to work one! Same with JW. Is the station that is presently there (I forget the call) ever actively looking for NA (late late at night his time) Ditto JX.....just wondering. I think it is VERY possible, given the reoccuring DX to KL7, OX, VE8, VE4 on a constant basis. Many thanks- Mike VE9AA

Missed OX2K again - except for a single ping! Wow. I agree with comments below, that this year the Es propagation is exceptional, better than I have experienced before. We've already had 6 or 7 openings to Middle East (but bad direction for me, so nil worked in pileups), and something nearly every day in May. My first opening was end of April, rather than mid-May. It really is a vintage year, and getting better daily! Roll on the F2 season ....

What a day yesterday. First ZD7VC as a new one and than OX2K.
Unless the 5-7 PC noise and QRM I was able to hear OX2K. But
what a sensation at 23:00Z He became so much stronger up to
S9+20dB. It sure were strange conditions. Earlier the evening
OX2K was very strong with stations only 50 kilometer away
from me and I was hearing nearly nothing. Same time Claus and the
team working S5 and I. OX3SIX in HP15 was much stronger most of the
time with me. Anyway, 2 new ones in one day is a long time ago.
The old feelings that are remembered so well from the last cycle
came back! I am not complaining for a year...for sure! 73,

anyone thinking of modifying a heathkit sb200 for 6m may be better off adapting the 10m section, it is much easier & takes only half the time,no wires to reroute on input b/switch,one wire to move on output tuning,& no input tune coil to rewire .just move one wire, replace one capacitor, remove some plates & youre in business.then you have 80/40-30/20/15-17/6m amp.

Well I have had a fantastic week on 6m 15 new dxcc in the last 7 days in the following order ZA CN EH9 ZB2 C31 TK FR JY VP8 OD SV9 EY FH UN & OX taking me to #95 not including TK or HA.Highlights have got to be VP8 EY and UN.I have been at work both times ZD7 has been in,and congratulations to John G6YIN who is my neighbour and a great listener (luckily for me).Today the backscatter was great and PY5CC was the only SA heard yet again.I still need LU CX CE so please order a monster SA opening.I have the next 3 days off so if the ZD7's in again I'm gonna join in the lottery.73

Boy, what a day! With a little more luck one could work 50MHz WAC in just one day!
Heard and called VK8MS at 1000Z but he didn't hear me, then at 1340 OX3SIX/b came in for the first time ever (for me) with s7. There was not a sign of OX2K at the time. Around 1450, heard K3AX, followed by N4MM, WA2FGK, W3CM and W4DR. Later, there were ZD7VC, LU2FFD. I didn't work any of them (output power limited here to 10W ERP) :-((
I worked UN7QX and finally C31HK for my #89. All at all not a bad day (for a SWL, hi). Thank god it's holiday in 9A tommorow.

Strange day on Six Metres in IO94FM. There seemed to be DX all around but little was audible here. No sign of OX2K although OX3SIX/B a good signal - the path geometry must have been wrong for 2xEs. No NAm signals although terrific backscatter from PA's, EH's and south G's at 270degrees. UN3G was not audible although I could here many SP's working Val! No sign of the LU's either. Anyway it wasn't all gloom very good short Es to northern GM (which is really short from here!) and a special thanks to Peter PY5CC - who I did get in the log. I wonder how much was F2, how much was E layer , how much was E's and how much was linking. Some of the signals were a) very (unusually)strong or b) very (unusually) stable - makes one wonder. On the point of The DX pile up - simple solution - the DX doesnt call CQ or work on a selected frequency - they cruise the band and find the station THEY want to work. This avoids the pile up and creates more activity as we all find a clear spot to call and hope DX finds us. Then no more reasons to complain. Some will find fault with this I'm sure

Chris GM3WOJ <gm3woj@talk21.com>
- Monday, May 29, 2000 at 13:17:46 (GMT/BST)
I have mixed feelings about this 'slow QSO rate' problem - one of the features of 50MHz propagation are openings which can last only a few seconds, so I would suggest that 'ragchewing'-style operating techniques are NOT a good idea, for everyone's benefit. I spent one hour waiting (while working 6m DX!) on 20m yesterday while VK0MM worked Eu by random numbers, then worked him first call. Everyone has the right to operate in the way that suits them best, but rare DX stations cannot realistically complain about a pile-up calling, only the behaviour of the pile-up - a good operator will keep any pile-up well under control, and a key feature of this is to keep the QSO rate high and give everyone the expectation of working them within a reasonable time. If people are waiting for their number or watching signals fade out, frustration is inevitable. We need far more split-frequency working, and stations to QSY higher up the band - the old story. Visit the new contesting.com web-site and read Jose CT1BOH's article about pile-up working - he doesn't mince words about what is good technique and what is poor technique. A few years ago I contributed an article to 'Six News' about pile-up working - some of the ideas are now outdated, but the general principles still apply. Let's speed everything up ! 73 Chris

gentlemen its a hobby and there will be plenty rare dx in the next six months, methinks all this excitment is just plain silly,if you keep complaining that ops are not working enuff stations in one go then perhaps they will give up with 6m and get really lost in the HF bands, try beating the pile ups down there.

RE: RARE DX on 6m. I agree with Chris. Initially, I would
probably be like you are: VERY FRUSTRATED, however, upon reflection, Chris makes some excellent posts. Everyone is
slow when they first start, or may not realize the "normal"
way of operating the 6m MAGIC band during very brief band
openings. I think for the most part, these are everyday guys
just trying out a new band. These are not Martti Lane's
or other seasoned Dxpeditioners, with years of DX-ing experience, that will generate 5 Qso's per minute. I feel your pain, but remember-no dx like this over in N.Eastern quadrant of W1/VE1 in NA!! WE did have a weekend filled
with countless hours of EU video, like my buddy K1SIX eluded
to. 49.740 (x 2) was the most often thing heard all weekend. Are there any legal stations in OK or HA? Any beacons closeby to 49.740 transmitters that we might monitor
for? Any hams in closeby countries? All weekend we heard the drone (except at night, hi) but no stations worked.
Wonder where the 740 xmttr is that has an unstable carrier
and jumps ~100Hz often? Thanks any help. Mike VE9AA....

For heavens sake guys stop whinging! Through the efforts of many guys we have now have 1 ZD9, 2 ZD7s and 3 VP8s on 6m for the first time this year. And, they are ALL RESIDENTS (meaning they live there!) and are actively looking for QSOs. It doesn't help their enthusiasm when on their first time on the band to be met with these sort of comments. I know how I would feel! You know how long it takes to get used to the operating habits of the band. Chris

Today morning i have lissen C31HK, great event for my locator is rare this short skip, but Freddy ( same at my name) was operating in very slow mode (1 qso in 2min) and only UK and northern EU stations (that in ES can be contacts every day for the good skip).
So i have see that the difference from 5A1A Abubacher to C31HK is 5 qso to 1 in same time.
Now i think that is necessary that anyone send this information at Freddy and he remember that a rare country has more responsability of a normally country in ES.
I hope to heard C31HK again before he stopped six meters operations!!!!!! 73's

Well I have to say I was shocked at the pileup for ZD7VC. Lots of alligators out there.
Also incredible G stations 55 on the mobile, I hope they're that loud in the contest next
week! Finally, I'm in London this week, anyone for a beer? Best to leave a message on my voicemail 01534 831883

Mark, sorry to say but I think the BY2 station you reported was a spoof. No other indicators were evident at this time or other stations from far east. Looked up this callsign at usual places...not listed anywhere...happens to us all at some point on this band!

ZD7VC: Well, I eventually worked him but it was not easy and I certainly feel for all those in EU that were shut out especially those whose callsign got a mention only to be told "only working G". The main problem was the painfully slow QSO rate - I estimate about 3min per QSO - would take 1000 years to work all those calling!! New ones this week- TK(?), C31, FH, CX, FR, OY, OX, TR, ZD7 wow. 73 Peter

zd7vc,well he came in here at s-5 at best when east of me & into europe he was 9+,i managed to work him eventually but it was not at all easy.
i think the reason why he wanted a lot of g stations is because he can work eu most days , but uk does not open so often.it is unfortunate [or fortunate] that this was the first opening to uk/zd7 ever, hence there is going to be a BIG pileup especially on a sunday!!!,so dont worry , youre time will come.i didnt get vk or kh7 but i dont mind, remember 6m is now the most popular band!! without the uksmg we woudlnt have so much information to hand,73.

Yes I am frustrated too. ZD7VC...Maybe 6 meter is to related
with uksmg?? Should we rename the group to Esmg? European Six
Meter Group! Heard him from the beginning and at best S9+20!!
Got the reaction: "Sorry but only UK". Even people changed
their call in G7XXX. Must be a sign. Now 19.20Z it is quiet
and peacefull at .130 again. Good luck you European fellows.

Been listening to ZD7VC for the last half hour now.
he is asking for "only G stations" .OK He is his own boss.
He can work as he pleases being the DX station.
But is this the right way to operate on a competitive band like 6M??? Everybody should have a fair chance to work a new one. He was audible from 9H to OH. If he wants to work G stns only , should not he QSY to 20 m? and work them all night long ??. OK Guys I know I sound very frustrated, But would not you be??? Bruce , If you read this, please don't be offended, maybe you don't know that DX-ing on 6m is a very hard competition, Hope to work you sometime in the future

If you didn't workthe 6M expedition ZA1A in 1992 don't worry. Stan ZA/OK1JR informs me in an e-mail that he will be very active on both the 50MHz and 144MHz bands. He is using an Icom IC706 MkII and a CUBEX 2-element Quad on 6M and an N7BHC 4-element Quad on the 2M band.
He was much stronger on 144MHz when I worked him yesterday for the first ever ZA - G contact on that band. Got him on 6M this morning. He's made over 700 QSO's on 6M in the last few days. His e-mail address is ok1jr@iname.com 73 & good luck on the 'real' magic band - 144MHz! Hi

CAN ANYONE IDENTIFY THIS 49.740 Eastern Europe TV TRANSMITTER? Yesterday, I was receiving TWO 49.740 carriers along with 49.750 and 48.240 (DL). This seems to show a footprint somewhere near HA, OK, OE or SP. One of the 49.740 carriers was highly unstable and should be easy to identify. The most notable characteristic was a sudden frequency jump of ~100 Hz (est) every few minutes. At about the same time, Mario (K2MUB) may have heard OE6BMG working a pileup ~ 50.093. Any ideas? Agree that yesterday was one of the best Es days for a long time, certainly since I've been on the band (1987). Jamie, you're lucky, it's taken me that long to get 93 counties :-( Heard a couple of interesting ones: UR7TO (KN39) was 599 for ages but couldn't hear those going back to his CQs, and UY1HY (KO60) was another big signal, couldn't raise either though. Did get loads of YOs and LZs though, plus the ZA. :-) See you all on th band today, looks like it's gonna be another good one.

Wow what a day yesterday, 3 new ones worked #92 DXCC only 8 to go !!!
Came home from work to find that I had just missed a 144 opening.
Worked ZA/OK1JR 12.44z, FR1GZ 16.34z and then LX1FC for the 3 new ones.
Hrd an OE calling VP8 but nil hr in io81.
144mhz then opened for over an hour(best e's I've wrkd in 6 yrs!)to most of Europe.
Best dx on 2 was UR5BAE KN29 at 59+40db AMAZING!!
May have missed quite a lot on 6 due to the 2mtr opening but had loads of fun on 2.

Well I am a very happy person today.VP8CMT peaked 53 for about 10 mins max with me.I worked him first call and I was surprised.I was also very fortunate because I had to go to work 10 mins later. It does make up for the lack of signals from FH.I did manage FR for a new one earlier in the week only 539 though.I missed the CX on Tuesday night due to work.I still need CX and LU!I get about 3 evenings a week off and every time that there is a SA opening I am at work!Anyway big genuine thanks to Chris WOS for getting Keith VP8CMT interested in 6m and also thanks to Neil for spotting him.OD beacon was also 599 for about 3 hrs and no sign of OD stations.I set off for work only to have G4CBW phone the mobile and play a recording of the OD5 at 59.It is a magic yet tragic band.....73

Bob ZL3TY was round this afternoon along with G3KOX(5B4FL) Bob got treated to some exciting EU/AF sounds from my IC756 notably FH/TU5AX - it was great to get a new one in the log after so long, especially having missed the ZD9(sigh).Not a sniff of the VP8 here Chris so perhaps no worries. It was frustrating to listen to so much QRM from all over EU cq's etc but that goes with 6m. Please think again before posting moans about other op's here or anywhere else IT DOESN'T HELP. If you are unhappy tell the XYL, your dog or the budgie, but not the 6m world no one is interested..

Re: beacons, in general. Yes, ZS6DN in on a prime site slightly to the east of Pretoria. Johannesburg, where most of the ZS 6m ops are located, is a further 30-50 km south, very much at the southern tip of the "normal" TEP pipe. When condx are exceptional, the path extends a bit further south, possibly to northern ZS4. Why are beacons FSK? One doesn't know if they are shifted high or low, they use double the bandwidth and one never knows what the freq is supposed to be, bad for narrow-band working... By the way, there is no frustration this end about "poor" band condx, they could hardly be better even though ZS is approaching the end of TEP.

Neil, 'JHC: re those ZS beacons....
I haven't heard MANY ZS openings here (the last few you've had in the UK have gone straight over my head - too close to the Es-link I guess), but the one rule is that ZS6DN/b is always 10dB louder than any other ZS signal, and it's usually 'WB, 'BTE and 'PJS that come closest to it. The other beacon is so much weaker I can't even remember it's callsign, hi. It's not just activity, it's down to the DN beacon being on a site most ZS ops would kill for (or so I've been told.....)73

This email came to me today so some one explain.......
From a respected 6M op on the UKSMG announcement page...
(I presume ALM entered this line)
A classic on the VK6MG chat...

"It was great hearing you come through...
...when I was trying to work you at the start of the opening, and not sure

So who is it Chris Lets guess VK8 to W6? or VK4 to W6 as there have been no openings lately other than this i can only guess?

Jose EA7KW reminded me the other day, he hadn't heard me complaining for a while so here goes....
(1) Why for the last 3 days have I had both ZS6 bcn's in at good strength for nearly an hour around 16-17z, but only ever heard ZS6BTE, PJS and WB? (S9 yesterday), whats happened to the other 10-20 Op's who I've never worked who seemed to be spotted regular during Feb-Apr South EU Season?
Do they know this is the time for the North or not?
(2) Is it just me or is there an obsession for the "last two letters of grid squares" this summer, sometimes this appears more important to some than getting the call right.
OK, back to dreaming of that new one NOT being 31 under 5 local CQDX calls and 3 inter EU QSOs at 59+ on 110.....dream on hi! 73

TK infos : The 6 meters band is not allowed in Corsica (departments 20A and 20B). All expeditions are illegal. Not any licence has been never delivered in spite of many requests. For 5R8, FH, FR5, FY, a.s.o, the frequencies allowed are 50.000 to 50.200. No problems for them ! 73 Georges F8OP

Re TK: G4OUT (awards Manager) had the written info for operation, only the
southern most tip was allowed where there is no TV tx.
I know he allowed it for the awards after he rxd the paperwork.
However, no foreigners can get permission from the French
PTT. That is for certain. Only French residents have ever obtain permission
and even then with difficulties!

TK: Don't think it's a DXpedition - the guy talked about living there (in a part of the island not served by TV). Guess we will just have to wait and see - It's a bit like the 99% of French stations that have ALWAYS worked below .200 because it's the only way to work any DX - not to mention FR5 who in theory at east are covered by the same rules(?!)

Last heard TK was a definite no-no. There was a station
saying that there was no sign of VHF TV being shut down in
the forseeable future. Another thought is that if it's not a
well published DXpedition, then what are the chances of being
licensed before the locals? And if TK had got 6 we'd know.

Nice afternoon of Es here in IO70. Very little multi hop but lots of intense short skip so got some new F squares and also C31 and TK (listened whilst G0RUZ questioned the legality of the op - was satisfied with the L-O-N-G answers I heard), so got him in the log. It's 14:05 and TK/DL7HZ is creating quite a pile up on 50.120mhz. Can some one in France, or even better Corsica find out if this is legal or not please. I'd love to work TK as i need it for DXCC, but why work a pirate? Beside, more importantly, if he is illegal, he's causing a problem for real TK stations who want to get on the band. Band alive here in G(IO91)late yesterday afternoon(Sun). Unfortunately plenty of EU-EU activity in the DX window, so hard to hear in particular FH/TU5AX. Clever ZS op's have picked up on this, and a lot show up on cw under 50.100(smart guys). FR activity has been good of late, but a lot of the activity has been on SSB, it doesn't stretch the extra miles like cw! Here's hoping for a good opening north of London!

re YI1BGD: About five years ago an offer was made by Iraq to allow six metre operation at a Science Fair in the city. So they probably allow it now. About 2½ years ago I think it was I was in Baghdad and YI1BGD (the University Club Sation) was not operating, but I would still be inclined to believe the recent YI1BGD operation is genuine.

VK3OT: 'It is pointless for people always to criticise'. So why is most pointless criticism from '3OT? But seriously, the only two options that seems to work for Dxpeditions and well equipped others are: 1. Calling to wake up the band on .110 then IMMEDIATELY QSY on first RX'd call. Naming / claiming a freq and NEVER moving (works just like .110 - people just leave an rx there until you pop out of the noise.)

EA7KW de VK3OT a hang up from Cycle 22 when many Pacific Expeditions operated on 50.115, close to 110 but not on 110 to give some breathing space. I also operated 50.115 from VK8OT as did 9V1JA and TX0DX. Please make a suggestion. It is poitless for people always to criticise. VK9WI and 4W6UN were 113 and 115 last night but are 3000 kM apart, how are they supposed to know. How is anyone supposed to know. 70 or 100 stations posting information on the prop log or here does not make up the "world community" of 6M ops. Hundreds of 6m ops never come on the internet es many of the Asian ops like VR2, BG7, DU, YB etc, so how are they supposed to know what frequency is safe this week and what next week?
The JAs say don't post other than JA to DX or DX to JA on their web site so thats a dead end as well. I was complained about on 115 in April even after careful liason with JA boys as to what was a safe frequency 50.115, as it turned out some VK boys objected to the "deliberate qrm" in the window, you can't win.

Just to add to Jose et al's comments on computer sprogs, I now suffer from a new machine very close, and it doesn't just put out carriers - I have 5-7kHz wide "buzzes" at .110, .124, .148 from about 1700gmt daily - which is exactly the time and QRGs when JY9NX has been in here. Grrrr (again). I don't have a digital readout (IC202 + txvtr) so I am not hung up on having zero at the end of my display. I am turning to cw because: a) .090 - .100 remains fairly clear, b) it's easier to read the weak ones amongst the strong PCs, and c) it's getting me new DXCC I couldn't work by SSB (my 1st ZS, ZP, EI ...) but please be patient with me whilst I get my speed up (5wpm okay, up to 12 if ONLY rpt/loc/73 type QSO!)
Didn't hear any SA stations last night, but worked EH8BPX around 2100 or thereabouts.
Can anyone out there design a virus that checks for sprogs and shuts down the offending PC during an opening, hi.

Jose is right. Me too has a strong carrier all the time on 50.115. Choosing an 'odd' QRG like 50.122.5 or 50.127.5 would decrease the chance , that an OM unaware of the ongoing DX event would use the expedition QRG imho. Must be magic, that with readouts to 2 digit behind the decimal point still QRGs with a zero in the last digit are preferred. Couldn't we do without this sort of number magic on the magic band?

Why every dxpedition loves 50.115 ? Have a look at the previous 6M operations announcements on this year : XZ, ZK1, FO0, 9V1, A51, VK9W. According to many EU and NA stns
there are buzzes (fax machines osc. ?) in the .112-.121 range. Here too ! Yesterday three YB stns sat on .115, fortunatelly YB0DX was loud enough to make happy some EH7s. Anyone against the 50.100-50.110 and 50.123-50.130 segments ?. 73

Unsuccessful? That's a matter of opinion, given the limited resources, a boat of finite load capacity, and unforseens such as: WX, injury, damage to cat, etc. Sorry Steve but we should have included you, but your hatred towards VK4s is noted world-wide. Please end the political statements once and for all. A big thank you to all you others who have helped with positive contributions.

VK9WI Update - Logs: They are now on-line. This log contains 7,854 QSOs through to 17-May-2000 1912 UTC. Please note: THIS IS ONLY A PARTIAL LOG! One of the three log portions received was damaged, so if you are not in the log, don't worry until the next update. This log also does not currently contain RTTY QSOs. The first 200 50MHz QSOs are in a hand written log, yet to be computerised. Watch this space!

I don't believe it!!I sat listening to 6m from 11:00 UTC to 17:00 and there was hardly any E's.I set off to work and 2 potential new ones pop up.JY (I was QRT when the UKSMG did the expedition)and LZ would have been new although I am not worried about LZ.G6YIN who hears more or less the same heard JY9NX quite well.Any way I have 2 nights off from my work as a musician so expect little or nothing.
The other thing is I go to South Wales on Thursday for 4 days and I am staying in a Hotel at Cardiff Gate in IO81.I am looking to go out portable to fill in the void between 11:00 and 16:00 can any GW recommend a suitable hilltop site nearby.73

To VK3ATQ, seems ironical that the ill-fated 50.0515 beacon that the guys in Melbourne were adamant was unworkable due to the potential for qrm finally does just that 2500 kM from its birth place on an important dxpedition and has to be shut down. Seems the guys in VK3 were right after all.

VK3OT and VK3ATQ and I think VK4BLK suffer this problem. When I reviewed the rig in Radio Comms' circa 1992 the Yaesu agents in VK got really upset when I reported IF break through. Now at the peak of the cycle the 13 Mhz sw tx is 9+40 db and breaks the IF every day when i try to listen for signals below 50 Mhz. At 50 Mhz and above the if break thru is not as serious, but just tx on your local HF rig to see how bad the problem is.
it will need an after market fix and am hoping someone will tell us how to do it, I dont think there is any adjustments.

Space Weather News for May 11, 2000
Material from a coronal mass ejection that left the Sun on May 8 is
expected to pass by our planet late on May 11 or early May 12. Depending
on the characteristics of the magnetic field within the disturbance, it
could trigger minor geomagnetic storms on Earth. There is a slim chance of
aurorae at mid-latitudes, but auroral activity will more likely be
concentrated over high latitude regions including northern Europe, Canada
and Alaska.

NASA says : "Despite the unusual absence of large sunspots this week, solar maximum is apparently still on the way". "These are just normal up and downs in the sunspot cycle," explains Dr. David Hathaway, a solar physicist at the Marshall Space Flight Center who specializes in tracking and predicting sunspot activity. "On a daily or weekly basis the sunspot number can fluctuate wildly, but when we average the counts over a month they agree fairly well with our predictions that Solar Max is very near."

Has there been any official word yet about the fact(?) that we've passed the (first) peak of cycle #23 yet? I haven't read any reports yet, but if you look at the picture at "http://www.dxlc.com/solar/solar.gif" it makes you wonder. If the peak was a few weeks ago it would be likely that the propagation will be even worse in the next few seasons. Hopefully this cycle will produce another (higher) peak. BTW does anyone know the required foEs for EsMUF(2000km)?

The last of the backlog of 4W6UN 6M and HF cards has been cleared $800 worth of postage, but 10% at least of the cards are invalid for the following reasons, 1/. Not in log 2/. Wrong mode (4W6UN does not work CW) 3/. Not in log for 6M but OK for HF ????? 4/. Wrong times logged (these can be sorted out. 5/. Wrong call Other ops who were active under 5 other callsigns will NOT accept cards with 4W6UN call on them even if the time and dates fit their logs, ebsides who has got time to chase up 5 other 4W6s and ask them to check log pages. 6/. Wrong station altogether, suspect some thought they were working 4W6 and maybe worked TX0 or whoever, as I suspect will happen with A52 and 9N7 ops who are crowding each other out on 50.115 and 50.120. Worst offender were JAs who I suspect did not have a clue as to the callsign of the far end 4W6's which possibly means that DX ststaions should ID more often even if it takes up valuable dx time. If you have not gotten your 4W6 card by next weekend you wont be getting one. QSL manager.

Another mail from Tony (VP8OI) and Lyn (VP80V). "Its rather funny, I have three rigs that can work 6m. but I have never worked that band. I suppose I will now have to justify a beam for 6m. As you note in your article most HF HAMS have gone QRT since the phones came in, I still listen a lot but as my business has expanded I find it hard to find the time to spend hours QSLing the globe, as I used to." Fingers crossed! Chris

I received the following mail from Neil, VP8AWU - can anyone help please. His e-mail address is nrowlands@horizon.co.fk "I collected the antenna from Mr Peter Short (VP8WA) but it has had an accident. It is a Cushcraft A505S. Unfortunately there is one element missing and he does not have the leaflet or book about measurement etc. "Can you find out for me the measurements and specs for this antenna. I will make the 5th element locally once I know spec's etc. The antenna is on the front lawn waiting attention." So, anyone that wants to help get VP8 on 6 had better get searching! Chris

Both solar flux and SSN levels are now dropping below the minimum levels of the previous solar rotations. Does this mean the peak is passed, possibly yes. Does it mean the propagation is over, definitely NOT. The best is (should be) yet to come. The best propagation in cycle #22 only came right after its 2 peaks ('89 and '91).

I note with some amusement the regular comments about how one needs to be in the tropics. In South Africa, east-west propagation seems to follow exactly the opposite trend. When working JA, VK and South America, the ZS1 and ZS5 stations have had the edge. More than half of all contacts with Japan have been from ZS8, despite its low activity levels. About 50% of our amateurs are in a very small area around Johannesburg, part of the ZS6 call area. We are fairly far north, and enjoy a distinct edge into Europe. I guess those 70-odd countries make up for the odd JA or VP8!

Hello all! Funny thing happened yesterday. I worked FH/JR4PMX and he was coming for about a minute with astonishing 59+10 dB in jn86fj. At the same time Mark 9a8a who is some 10 km to the south of me (jn86eh) didn't hear him at all!
It IS magic indeed (well, if it was the other way around I sure wouldn't call it magic, hi). Anyway, Mark worked him a couple minutes later (I wasn't listening so can't tell if I would copy FH/JR4PMX at that time).
A few minutes later, 9a1cal(op Mirko,9a2f) who is 500m from me claimed that he can copy FH when only noise was here (9a1cal uses 6 ele TV antenna while here is 6m7jhv on top of the roof). Very, very interesting.
It's smilar situation to that one with VP8DBL when only a few stations in my area could copy Chris. Cu all on (so far for me) Magic Band :)). Bob

Space Weather News for May 1, 2000
A coronal mass ejection (CME) from a small sunspot group was recorded by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory on April 30, 2000. If material from the eruption is heading toward Earth, as animations of the CME suggest, then the shock wave will probably arrive late on May 2nd or sometime on May 3rd. Forecasters estimate a 30% chance of active geomagnetic conditions at middle-latitudes on May 3, 2000.
