Hi from Green centre of VK8, yes green it has rained for weeks here. Worked
all JA and HL2WA in first session from PG66 before i fell asleep so looking for the rare
stuff and will push CW mode 50.115 QRV after 1200z daily.

Hello - Just some words to report that our 24h non stop on 6m was very poor last week-end. Very bad cdx, but we did qso some JA (SP), EY8 and UN3. Even usual stations in Mediteranean area were weak here.... Nothing was heard over the LP to JA/NA/VK/ZL . We hope better cdx soon.

I have just learned today that I may be going to Dubai UAE for 6 weeks at the beginning of July.I will be working from 2030 to 0030 local time(1830 to 2230)as a musician in a hotel.It is for a friend who wants to go back to the UK for a while.He has a nice villa and has no objection to me putting up a 5 ele and an HF vertical.Does anyone know the licensing situation.I see he has picked the hottest month to come home!

Oh bang on EH works ZL tonight!! Great going guys, and to all those sceptics thats another down! RE EU-ZL TESTING my original mail didn't get a large number of replies, but since the KH7R longpath opening i have been inundated with e-mails!! The EU-ZL tests started on 27th March & run nightly till 9th April inclusive. Freq 50.095 cw only, schedule as follows: EU TX 20.50 for 1 min followed by 1 min period of listening, then ZL end tx 1 minute followed by 1 min of listening. Last tx 21.08 from ZL end. All of the operating space from the EU end is filled, contact ZL3TIC if you are at ZL end please. So we've seen the 1st contacts of cyc 23, here's to plenty more 73 sixers.

until the dx stn is reaching s7 or s9 and then you call him
easy.. Thats a tip from a more southern located dx gun..
I am now leaving for Egypt but have to leave my set home.
So finaly propagation but this time no rig.
The frustration is getting to high peaks higher then the solar figures... Here 50MHz is like a VHF band.

Copy on web is hard to read.I have QRM from south, every 110 kHz S9+ with drift of cca 5 kHz/h up and down and of course, when there's something interesting on band, it's on 50105 - wiping out +/- 10 kHz. 73, Bob.

Hallo friends. I just came home from HB0 and as I mentioned yesterday, there is still 3m (!!) of snow on top of my (retracted) mast. Nevertheless I will be in HB0 from april 8th for approx. one week, depending on condx.The qth is at 2100m asl, in JN47tc and it is allmost the only mountain (access only by cable car) from which we have a more or less free departure to main activity areas. I refer to the Dxpedition to the Flores Is.that took place earlier this month.They made thousands of QSO,and on 6 mtrs.
they contacted 34 different countries.

Amazing propagation one night last week. Late at night, with only weak Med TEP present, heard RZ2FT calling CQ, perfect copy. Sounded like an Italian guest-op. Seconds later IK7UXW called CQ on the same frequency, same signal strength.

EU to ZL openings:
Guys could I ask a big favour we seem to be getting a path to EU beaming via the Caribbeans what I need is reports from Europe eg are you guys hearing our TV ( 45.240,250,260 ) we need these reports I will be on 6m most days freq 50.095 and 50.110 you can eather email me or I am very active ( and so are lots of other ZL's ) on the 50mhz propagation logger this can be found at http://raven.cybercomm.net/~slapshot/dxing/50prop.html if ypu can log into this and send your reports it would help alot.
The next 3 weeks is going to be interesting and we all need to be on the ball.
Again we need to know if you guys are hearing the TV this IS a good indicator....likewise we will send reports on the 50mhz logger when the 48mhz TV is heard.
EH7KW was copying our TV @ 2100 today to S9+!! these are the sort of reports we need.

Everyone says yesterday was pretty good. It was... One of the strongest TEP I have ever seen. OD5SB was in with a honest 55 (5W into 5 Ele yagi)+ I,IS0,Z3,YU,ZA,9A,EH,CT,SV5
SV,EH9,EH8,9H,F. Along with EU, VP6BR and 3C5I were S9+. Sometimes the TEP goes farther north than the normal. OK,HA,HB9,YO,OE... be tuned between 21Z and 23:30Z.

Hi friends. What day yesterday... even worked 3 ZS-stations out of the car; quater whip ant. Missed KH7..Tomorrow I will inspect my usual HB0 qth at 2000m asl and - I am sorry to say - it does not look too promising. There is still more then 2 meters of snow, so just impossible to set up the 6m antenna.I will be in HB0 tomorrow, the 29th march and I will be qrv from the car from 1030 utc for approx 2 hrs. What a day yesterday! After KH7 in the morning the band was open till
midnight, sounding at times like 40mts. The ZS6,3C5,7Q7,and ZD8 (evening) beacons were always there. I Think all the living ZS were on the air, but anyway I heard quite a polite traffic even from us S-EU (with some exception).
A lot of backscatter too, wrk 9A for a new one (qrb 400Km hi), in the evening 9G5ZW for another nice new one, and later PY2XB GG66 new Sqr, at midnight hrd CE4MLN in the noise worked by stns only 100Km south. 73s Andrea

ZD9ZZ peaked 579 qtf 170-180 degrees.
Was for sure no EU backscatter sign.Definitely from that region. slow CW however..
From 08.30 to 09.30 video was in yesterday qtf 110-130 degrees, source unknown (inband video).
Band stayed open till +-21.00 utc for me to ZS6, but fluttery signs.

I worked yesterday KH7R with only 50 watts. The signal was quite strong in JN26, S7 to S9. My report was S7. So I believe, high power is not necessary. In my opinion, the only thing to do, is to wait for a strong signal. Very often, the signal is first at all weak, then is improwing after a few minutes and falls down again. This happens most of the time. KH7R was S7/S9 at 10.30 and S1/S2 from 10.45 to 11.30. A few days ago, I worked ZS6PJS with 2 watts only. My report was S6. Yesterday In the after noon, ZS6WB was so strong here, that he made some TVI on my band 1 small TV set (with a 3 el beam pointed to Africa) Funny ! Georges.

Just for the record,no KH6 in SV yesterday and also no ZS6
at the time of the opening but only FR5...
Re ZD9ZZ, pse try to get the actual QTF and reported it
here or in the cluster.During two different openings his
signal was comming either on the true QTF or simultanously
via a scattered one over indian ocean.

Fantastic day yesterday with the band still open well after midnight when I went to bed. No KH7s here but based on last cycle they aren't far off. Still battling with Med stations calling when I am looking specifically for central & north Europe. Dozens of new DLs on and QSOed several yesterday using HF beams, three reporting that I was the first QSO they had ever made on 50 MHz. When condx are like yesterday I will operate split announcing listening 10 up but, but will actually tune 10-15. Suggest that central and north Europe stay near the 15 kHz end. Highlight of the day for us was 9G5ZW in the late evening, a rare one for us and first for all ZS as far as I know. Hope to hear you all in the pileups in the next few days.

Well today was interesting!Heard KH7 up here for 7 minutes peaked about 52 then heard ZS in and out for about 4 hours 57 was the strongest.I needed 2 hrs to work ZS3C for a new square also ZS5ADQ for a new one.V51KC was 539 and quite steady for about 20 minutes but he was giving 599 reports to DL's at the time.I also heard TR and A2 but only 419 and for a very short time.It certainly got the blood flowing again!Weak magic in IO93 but encouraging.Also thanks to all who responded re 4U/KC0PA same as S07URE ah well.

What a day...started with KH7R..hrd 57..but no power here. Congrats Johan (ON4ANT) who wkd him I hrd. Whole day ZS's. Wkd a couple of them. Also hrd TR8CA, V51KC (who went QRT in SSB with 59 sig ! Couldn't believe it, I was listening to KH7R in and out of the noise for over an hour. Everytime he was workable he asked for specific countries, mainly SM and ES. Anyone in G have more luck? The beacon was audible at times too.

The great thing about living at 54 north on the west coast of Europe, is the fact, noone gets stressed about missing any DX, as the band never opens! Its the same band up here as when the flux was below 100 for 2 years. Another dead day (we dont even get ZS).....back to laying the ground system for 160m hi.

Today SM3VEE heard the beacon KH6HME/B 419 in JP81.
Direction was 280 - 285 deg, NOT same path as in South and
Middle EU. It's very common with this on 10 & 15 m also.
Many times when Pacific stations comes LP in EU we have them
SP up here in Scandinavia. So what if KH6:s try to beam
over Northpole sometimes for a change ??
By the way, only DX heard up here since September-99 is
ZS6DN/B heard for abt 5 minutes tree weeks ago.
So dont complain abt bad conds down in EU Hi....

ZS path to east steadily improving with EY8CQ & EY8MM in both days this weekend, weak CW Saturday and S9 SSB Sunday. Historically April our best condx to east and west with virtually all KH6, JA and VK plus north and south America in that time frame. Propagation to KH6 and JA can start as early as 0600 utc, so stations in that area please watch for us. The next ten days should offer the best possibilities for UN3G, 4L5O, AP2WAP etch with 9N, BY HS, HL & JA coming within range latter half of April. I am currently entering all my paper logs into EA6VQ excellent log book program and I have found a qso with insufficient info.It was on the 18/06/1995 at 10:54 UTC and was with 4U/KC0PA.I worked on cw and my cw was very poor back then (It's a little better now) and I have IL??? down for the locator.This can't be correct can it.I thought 4U was united nations and assume that this is the UN building.Can someone help me?

SOUTH AFRICA MOST WANTED LIST
As far as I can determine the following countries have not yet been worked in ZS:
5A C3 HB0 SU T9
Of course there are many more, but all of these should be fairly easy for us if there is operation during the TEP season. Unfortunately, these operators seem to only surface during the EU Es season. Please, if you have contact with any of these operators please tell them about TEP and give them an idea when to watch for us.
There are many new operators in ZS who will also be looking for the rare ones like 1A0KM, 4U1I, HV etc. that have only been worked by a relative few ZS ops.
If you are planning to activate a rare grid this year, please consider scheduling during May or late August when there is a possibility of both Es and TEP propagation.
The season has started out well for us and we will be looking for Asia and the Pacific during the next few weeks. Typically these openings start for us in mid-April, but so far AP is as far east as ZSs have worked this cycle (as far as I know).

Yes it is time for Long path if you will remember VK6JQ and I made the long path records in April 1991 between VK6 and TL8 and VK3/VK2 and 9Q5 around 2200z to 2400z. There is a duct that is clearly developing on the real time porp display map. Also information about the TX0DX operation means it is going to be hard to break them if you hear the beacon as the following annoucment from W3UR shows>>>>The team has announced a new operating plan for the coming CQ WPX SSB
contest weekend (25 - 26 March). Rather than the previously announced
plan to operate on 15 SSB, TX0DX will concentrate on a special 10-meter

Last night VP6BR was heard in and out up to 519 between
2115-2230z at QTF 230 deg (scattered on E-TEP ionization
over W. Africa) and a K=3.No QSO with SV1 group although
Jukka was able to get the SV1...
Later VK4s heard ZD8/B also LP.
This morning at 0530z VP6BR was LP 59+ on 15m and at the
same time also LP on 10m ZL,VK6 beacons.
It seems its time for LP 6m openings to Oceania.
Jukka will try again tonight the same path...

Hello Friends - Pay attention to FR on 6m this coming week-end - We are planning more than 24h non stop operation on 6m, starting saturday around 0600z until sunday afternoon.

Well done on 2QF working 9M6BAA, it is waht I have always pontificated about, put a couple of good operators in any country with a half way decent antenna and a bit of grunt and you will work heaps. can hardly wait for Nev to go to 4W6, VK2/4/6/ on backscatter and many countries along the quator based on VK9X/9Y results 22 and 11 years ago.

We had a thunder storm today from about 15:00 till 15:30 and the static were very high on the rx as the storm moved to the west. I copied a beacon very weak on 50.024 with a lot of QRN where could it be? And music on 53.750 I think it was TV audio.The music it was in English any info on this?

Thanks to all who answered my request for help in tracing qrn some months ago.I eventually traced the source of the noise to a high voltage line a mile across the fields and specifically a pole with an ABS switch(air break switch)which was faulty and arcing intermittently.Local elecricity supplier kindly replaced it-and bingo,band is blissfully quiet again!However,a problem on Ten metres from TV switch mode power supply radiating noise has so far not been solved.Any suggestions?Not buying a new TV please...thanks and 73,Bill.

Re: Brian GW0PRM's comments - same here in Gloucester (IO81VV), nothing on 6m all day. Heard others working 9M, VK and TR8 but not a murmur here. That's the way it goes I'm afraid. 10m was buzzing today, got my first KL7 on a dipole in the roofspace, plus loads of JAs, was picking up stong video this morning plus loads of Arabic/Russian FM around 43MHz but still haven't heard any F2 on the 'magic' band this cycle. It's bound to open tomorrow 'cos most of us will be at work :-(

I have shipped an Emtron HF linear to Jukka VP6BR to replace the
Acom2000a which broke down soon after his arrival on Pitcairn Is.
So he should have a better signal on 80m and 160m.
Jukka says he wants to come back to Auckland on the first available ship
at middle or end of April, so he has about 4 to 6 weeks left.
I am concerned about the 6m situation. As you know he was donated a 5el
6M ZX antenna by the UK SixMetre group, and he will leave this on the island.
He has arranged to sell his Honda generator and spare petrol to Tom VP6TC,
so there will be AC power at the club station.
But he believes that none of the islanders have a 6m transceiver.
That would mean that operation on 6M would cease when he leaves.

Re ZD9ZZ on 6 meters: he was declaring a wrong locator (JF66). The signal was too stable, like backscatter. Heading was straight south. Finally, ZD9 call are assigned in alphabetic order. Conclusion: to me he is a phoney

Is there an amateur on ZD8? As per last cycle the ZD8 beacon is going to appear in VK on the long path many times to everyone's frustration if there is noone QRV on six. I'm sure locals here would provide 6m gear and antenna if there is someone on ascention licensed to use it; willing to use it; and preferably with a phone. If there is a resident 6m op, does anyone have a phone number? Next question:- Does anyone know details of ZD9ZZ spotted during the last 12 hours or so contacting Italy on six??? The new PY0FF/b beacon is being carried by N6FA & PY5CC in next couple of days to PY0. It will be put on the air premanently during their stay from Mar 21 thru 29. Hello 6m friends especially FT920 users. I found solution for previously told problem with FT920 DSP.Problem was in short circuit near the 66,6 MHz oscillator so DSP processor can't work without clock. If you find similar problem (absent of audio on receive and transmit) try to measure with ohmmeter over the small capacitor (22pF between oscillator and DSP processor (all in DSP module)) if short circuit occur carefully resolder bottom side of oscillator. Regularly 500 mV must be measured over capacitor (if you tested with diode tester on ohm meter). After that RIG working fine. Best 73 to all.

Re LP to KH6, This phenomenon is caused by so-called CHORDAL HOP: i.e. the reflection off the F2 layer is not back to earth, but to the F2 layer at the other side of the pole (so missing the earth near the pole, and thus skipping the very substantial attenuation at the auroral ovals.)
From western Europe we need an additional hop of Es or long Meteor burst as the angle of radiation for this kind of propagation is below the horizon. Chordal hop via the North pole is also possible, but again not from western Europe, because this time the angle we reflect off the F2 layer is much to high. Best chance for this kind of propagation is on or close to the equinoxes (21 March; 21 September)73 Willem

ARRL care less about reports.
ALL the XF4L cards to VK in 1989 carried the mode 2XFM and yet all contacts were on SSB/CW.
All contacts with Spain have to be EH prefix and yet many worked Spain as EA years before they got the legal band. All contacts with BV before 1992 were illegal and yet most ops from that era worked BV before the offcieal announcement about the band being available in Taiwan. And I distinctly remember the notices on this page from ceratin EU quarters asking EU stations to stop crossing fronteirs and pirating in countries that did not have 6M yet. So really a few qsl cards for phantom qsos are irrelevent, unless it is the only card for that country and then you have a problem of ethics. But then we always have that don't we nudge nudge wink wink say no more.

P.S. And it is not all intent. The VK3OT/VK5LP database when finished revealed many mistakes with one or two letters on a callsign transposed or a prefix changed, which was good news for some including me. Hands up anyone else on this page who worked someone and then found the call was wrong. My First QSO with France was with FC1BBG or was that BGG. I only found out I had copied the call wrong three months later when W6BYA worked him and told me.
I got the right card in the end. So what?

Re QSL cards. It is not only the JAs you should single out for sending in cards for contacts that may not have been made. Several EUs did it this way and a couple of VKs sent cards to G land for qso's they may not have had, But as PT says its a hobby. I mean look at 4W6UN, three days after the announcement and already the pirates are out in force on 90CW 10 meg CW etc, but only after the dx bulletins circulated on packet radio yesterday.

RE: Not directly, previous cycles showed that that will only happen when the flux starts to drop again. The "only" way you get openings during a climbing flux is just before a geomagnetic storm starts. Like the openings we saw in '89 and '91 starting in F2 and ending in Aurora+F2 (so sounding like aurora) from Eu to ZS/VE/W/CX.

With 50k+ JA 6m QSOs in cycle 21 as H44PT I recieved a few "not in log" and I'm not surprised given the solid wall of qrn in JA. Interestingly, I have recieved two US QSLs from the Nov 99 big opening for QSos that were not in my log or on my tapes. I do not presume to draw any conclusions about the honesty of these people - it's only a hobby after all! 73

My 2 cents on the JA matter : JA-PY propagation on the lower bands (80-160) are difficult. I have hundred of JAs worked on 80m/cw under severe QRN with weak signals's pile-up in short progagation windows. So I have also experimented receiving the cards for qsos not being in the log. Then I started to keep all the log drafts with busted and partial calls. Most (or every) NIL qso were in the draft, so I concluded that they were in good faith. In general, I don't think the JAs mean to mislead. Instead, as the six meters openings to JA land are very good with strong signals, this fact seldon happened on 50Mhz. So, I guess Willem is pretty correct.

Re JA QSL. I had the same experience with getting all sorts of JA cards from QSO's I never made. I used to be very annoyed by that, until a JA sent me a taperecording of an opening ,as heard from the JA end of the path.
Guys, that's REALLY amazing, what an absolute mess!!!!!.
Signals from EU are extremely weak (nearly in the noise, and weaker than the JA's are hrd in EU)and about a thousand people are calling on the same frequency as the DX.It is absolutely amazing ,and it is only thanks to the skill of the JA's that any QSO's are made at all!!.
In this light it is obvious that some JA's THINK they made QSO's by just hearing a couple of letters from there call.
I think the situation would improve dramatically, when we EU's would operate SPLIT. 73 Willem

3C: I've managed to renew my license again, for another 12 months, which will be great through the peak flux period....(or are we there now?). It was much simpler to renew this year, for $320+. Maybe it is easier to get licenses now, if people are thinking about dxpeditions. It is not a great place for 6m though: it is not a magic spot for DX, mucho TV qrm, and mucho TVI, power limited to 100W on all frequencies. Cheers

re JA: Well, speak as you find, but to be fair last year I had on six including dupes about 92 JA QSOs, received abt 53 cards direct and had only 2 or 3 'NIL' cards or 'emails .

Regarding JA QSL's: My own record was back in 91 when I worked 5 JA's in one opening and received QSL cards from 31 stations. Most of them were for SSB contacts even tough I only worked CW. It almost sounds as they have a standardized procedure.

Each major opening to JA results in a few "extra" QSL's. Some of them also tried last cycle!!!! A few are even QSLing QSO's on times before or after the opening, but on the correct day. A few stations have tried the same procedure with more then one SM station during the same opening! SOB!

I get a few 'Am I in the log?' from JAs, but remember there are very many of them calling with BIG stations, and they are not always as disiplined on six as on HF, so it must be hard for them. I can think of one or two nationalities who would not do as well....

I get several request from JA's to see if they are in my log.. at a certain time, inspite of the fact there not, I'm sure the qsl cards will start coming in aswell hi..
Must be the high qrm level over there making them think they made it into ON....

For DXCC purposes, UN Temporary Administration of East Timor will be added to the DXCC List with the effective date of March 1, 2000. QSL cards for QSOs made after that date will be accepted starting October 1, 2000.

re Yagis and elements.
I have never had an element fail in my 12 year old M2 however the boom breaks in the early models where certain holes are drilled. So if you use the M2 sleeved element idea and fasten it without a hole you are up and running????
Welding? SuperGlue? Rubber bands? How about double u bolt clam with no holes al la arrl 1959. GL 73

About yagi's home made I just want to say. Do not mount
elements direct on sharp edged Alu plates like I did once.
Use some plastic tubing or anything to keep some air between. And smooth the edges.
If you do'nt The elements will come down like apples and
will be cut neatly like you never can improve by doing it yourself! The resonance in weak wind allways there on top
will do the job.
Since I improved this point i did never find aluminium parts in the garden. And I listen with no interruption to the noise forever... hi.

My first opening to JA today, and a BIG one! Worked 37 stns for my country no:101 Unfortunately I was forced to do QRT by s9+ local spread spectrum QRM (armed forces I guess) wich wipes out a couple of MHz +/-. It's an old "problem" here and we have to live with it. Anyway, the pile-up was incredible, my new home made 5 ele wide spaced yagi seems to work just fine for only 2 meters above the roof, hi! Thanks guys!

Urgent HELP!
Problems with FT920 DSP unit: TRX become silent according to
DSP malfunctions: all seems good but audio is not present.
All other functions works well except transmit and receive
audio. Definitely problem is in DSP unit. After first black
out helped replacing of piggy back module (contacts problem?)
but now no help any more. All needed voltages present.
Any idea? Please help to get members od Radio club 9A1CAL on the air.

Re 6m aerials, m0bcg et al. Have you considered a multi-reflector quad, which can be constructed from plastic rainwater goods and copper wire? Much cheaper and potentially better performance than a Yagi. Colin.

Re: UK Beacons - sorry to disagree with my old pals John and Neil, but I think we probably only need 2 or 3 beacons in the UK, certainly at this point in the sunspot cycle. We really need a good auroral warning beacon, but here in IO77 I find that the higher ERP of the average station means I hear stations first then beacons later. 73 Chris

RE UK Beacons, I agree with Neil, G0JHC on this one, we should be looking at improving our own beacon network and servicing it before we invest elsewhere....I know the UKSMG is an international group but lets get the UK garden some "new flowers" this year! However regarding "rigs and twigs" then I think it is up to individuals to donate and not the UKSMG again!

it cost me ｣67 for the element tubing&clamps & gamma, & would have been another ｣30 for the boom 50x25x3mm 10m long to build each of my 9ele yagis.i buy aluminium for approx ｣3 per kilo or less from the mill .
i bought the tube from well known amateur aerial makers in uk,the boom i got from work.2x9eles for 6m cost me ｣194 to homebrew.qtek sell ali tube ,ele clamps ,gamma matches.
sandpiper sell ali tube etc for homebrewers.i have plenty of designs if you want to make a yagi.73

6m aerials. i expect the reason why the elements snap is because of the bolt holes,not a good idea with ali,unfortunately aluminium will crack in any area with a hole in ,it is a brittle material & with age work hardens.some aerial material used is of a strong grade but also is brittle,a lot of manufacturers use 3/8" elements which are not really large enough,1/2" is more robust for 6m ants,its all built for a price,the hype is high but the quality lower!!.i work in ali all day long.73

Re Eagle vs M2 - we've used 6-el Eagles in contests for a few years with no problems, but we don't work them nearly as hard as a permanent installation in IO93 does. The antenna at 9M6BAA is an M2 6M7JHV - let's hope it stands tropical storms as well. 73 Peter G4MJS / 9M6BAA from 17-27 March.

Ref Yesterday's info from Per-LA7DFA, maybe the UKSMG could donate an antenna to JW5RIA. The 3 ele Cushcraft would be ideal? I understand that he will have one of the new Acom amp's with him that puts out 1kw HF and covers 6m too! I've spoken to him this last week and he certainly sounds keen.
The QTH looks super, with over the horizon take off's back to EU, rather than a 3000ft mountain in the back garden like JW5E. I also get the impression that the shack is also the work, so availability looks high + he has a phone line via LA - what a great opportunity.
Any Committee members want to take this up and comment?

Re Gary's antenna appraisal.I can vouch for the M2 Gary.My antennas are also very exposed to the wind and we have certainly had a bad time in IO93 this winter.The winds turned over a caravan and pretty much wrecked it but the 6M7JHV took it all in its stride.The only problem is that the turnbuckle for tensioning the guy rope keeps undoing itself.I will bind it up with self amalg. tape some time this week.I also noticed that the band noise reduced considerably and signals got bigger!Good antenna go for it!

Ross 4W6UN in Dili just told me he tried 6M last night but dod not hear much. Was good copy on 28.885 and managed to work into W6 on 10M using vertical trying on 50 Mhz.
Re antenna choices. I made one in June 1989 and worked 20 countires in EU, that antenna is now down after 22 equinoxial wind storms and has suffered three cracked boom sections without a single element failure.
I have now just erected the 9 element spare yagi that has been around in VK for 12 years and I hope it will see me out, as it is less load on the tower than the 52 footer I just took down. Sadly the much talked about and highly rated N5JHV 7 element lasted two weeks in KL7 before succuming to high winds and stress. I guess it is hard to field test a yagi at 40 below when you live in California.
My new HF antenna is an old Mosely Mustang which has been up in VK then back to the UK and now back in VK and after 30 years still has all parts servicable, but it is made from Durallium.

anyone suffering probs from baby monitors may look at 124mhz area [airband freqs],there is a tomy monitor that puts out as much harmonics on airband as fundamental freq.
the RA want these out of service if they interefere with airband.if you find any monitors doing this you can notify the RA & they will be most interested to remove them & for testing.

Ross Ballantyne is no stranger to the world of DX, having activated rare locations in the past ten years including Cambodia (XU0UN), Mozambique, Western Sahara etc. Ross is currently working in Dili East Timor as a Border Control Officer for the United Nations, and was directly responsible for the application and negotiations to obtain the first legal amateur licensing for this territory. His operations are the first independent operations from this country since it was annexed by Indonesia over 25 years ago. The intense work load of 13 to 15 hours each day will mean that this country will remain high on the wanted list, but Ross intends to frequent regular VK and US DX nets as time permits.

Re: UK Beacons - I agree with David MM0AMW - GB3LER seems to be off the air at the moment. I'll check with John G3UUT. We're travelling to Shetland in October 2000 for a major DXpedition for CQ WW SSB, and should have time before the contest to repair GB3LER - hopefully it will be repaired long before then. 73 Chris

Por fin! Despues de varias noches intentandolo, ayer alrededor de las 00.00 pude trabajar algunas estaciones JA via LP.
Magnificas seales.Pero entre 100 y 130 la aglomeracion de estaciones hacia dificil el qso.
Ante esto comenc a trabajar en split 50170 tx y 50190 rx lo que di buenos resultados.
Espero que las condiciones se mantengan esta noche.

First time ever, heard yesterday station from ZS1 (Captown I think) ZR1TDR (or similar, sorry not in shack, but 100% sure in call: he was nice and clear in for 5 min), calling on 110 SSB. Signal was up to 59 but decreasing. I call in VHF technique with too times call end report. I m sure that ham heard me but was so prised and missed to understood call correct.
Conclusion: be prepared for rear conditions, use tape recorder for after analysing and be quick, ES linked TEP on both side is rear and unpredictable.

ZS-USA/CANADA QSO's? Today ZS4NS called in on 28.885MHz to
report: (I heard this second hand) that he was (or had been?) hearing
USA up to 48.250MHz. Now, I don't know who or what he was hearing or
or if the report got garbled, but it was a bit after we had 48.242MHz
from CT in on strong backscatter, bmg to ZS. It "SHOULD" be possible
to work ZS late in the morning here, but so far, not a peep.
Nico, Can you expand on your report please? This was the first
ZS I have heard on 28.885MHz...Right on ! CU on the magic band for a new one Nico.

Re. UK beacons. I think the UK is down to only two beacons Neil, as GB3LER
has'nt been heard since some stormy weather several months ago. I have no idea what happened to it
but it was usually the first indicator for auroral conditions and I hav'nt heard it in any recent auroral events.

9A1CAL: 9A3HZ is using a computer type oscillator (50 MHz: "but I am helpless in moving them up: it is running on crystal
module (PC crystal oscillator 50MHz). But, it is stabile and robust. 2 years of work without any maintenance. (Very hard to find appropriated crystal or

GB3BUX beacon on 50.000MHz has been off air due to winter storm damage earlier in the year, it is expected to remain off air for "some time to come".
This leaves just one beacon on from England (IO70) and two from Scotland (3 beacons less than 10 years ago). Its a pity the RSGB does not appear to support the funding of beacon projects any longer, the UK now lags well behind other European Countries with the number of beacons on air. Maybe the UKSMG could put this topic on its agenda?
I now have to check a 350km tropo path to make sure my rx is still working hi.

Hello all - today I worked Mike Wise J87AB on 10m (Mike has 50MHz equipment supplied by UKSMG and others) and he needs info. on propagation from his part of the world to Eu, S Africa, Japan, etc. - times and possible paths. He is a Pastor, running 100w from an IC706 to a 5ele Tonna on the church roof ! He is QRV until 14th Dec.2000, and said that he has worked many stations in South America so far. A week to go before we leave for 9M6 - our new 6m amp (Henry 2006A) has arrived there, and the antenna (M2 6M7JHV)is on its way. Should be QRV from 17th March 1200z. Conditions better by the day down here with eastern Europe/western Asia in yesterday (RN6HW, UU7JM, EY8CQ). This path should open frequently starting around 1100-1200Z. Where are all the Ukraine stations that have been reported during the European Es season? We hear the same few UT stations frequently with UU7JM probably the most consistant. Most down here still looking for T9, C3, SU, 5A, all of which should be workable if active. Has UKSMG or anyone else offered to make available a 50 MHz station to SV2ASP/A? I will continue sneaking home around lunchtime (1100-1200Z)just in case, so if ZS6DN/B is being heard make some noise!!

Folks, I'm looking for next long-path DX during my night time (13-15z) to northern S. America or Central America (HP/YN/YS) when this Corona effect closes. HK3YH, Hans was worked by LP with RST569!! at 1325z last Saturday for the first time from eastern/northern JA after YV4AB/b with RST579 at 1240-1250z. YV beacon was heard again at 13-14z last Sunday. Ron 7Q7RM reported on 28.885mhz today that he will be back on 6m from his new location near Blantyre. he is still within the KH74 grid square at his new home. He pointed out that the 7Q7SIX beacon is reporting the incorrect grid locator - it should read KH74 at the home of 7Q7JL and not in KH75 square, 73s Ted

Yes, we plan to have the new amp at Dayton. It will cover 6m and 2m, use a
pair of 3CX800A7 tubes, and the circuit is similar to the old Johnson 6n2 amp
(tubes in parallel on 6m, push-pull on 2m).
It will look very much like the Alpha 89 (using many common components) and
price should be about $4000.
We want to be in production by May, but that may not be possible.

My guess is that the UK replacement for cordless phones is the DECT system.
This is digital, and works on 1800MHz (I think). I believe it is compatible
with GSM, so in theory, you could use your GSM as a handy for your home phone line
I'm sure a search on DECT would bring lots of info

Residents of Canada and the northern United States should be on the alert
for aurora borealis during the night of March 5 and morning of March 6.
The best time to view aurorae is usually around local midnight. Tonight's
new moon will make even faint activity easy to see.
Early on March 5, 2000, the interplanetary magnetic field in the vicinity
of Earth developed a significant southward-directed component. This
condition often means that solar wind plasma can penetrate Earth's
magnetosphere and trigger auroral activity. Data from NOAA's polar
orbiting meteorological satellites late on March 5 show an expanded auroral
oval. If this high level of activity continues, auroral displays could be
visible as far south as the Great Lakes states and in New England.

Just had a visit from A22ZS who lives in Gaborone. He has an Icom 726, but no 50 MHz antenna and he hasn't listened to the band. I loaned him a TE Systems 170 watt amp and briefed him on current activity and condx and he has promised to be active within the next few days. Will initially use an HF antenna, but I have a 4 element Hy-Gain currently in use at the office that is being replaced during the coming week so have offered that to him. Haven't heard much activity from A22BW so he might provide a bit more action from A2. Bands improving here by the day.

Folks, Great long-path propagation to EA this morning for the firs time. Worked EH7KW, EH3ADW, EH7AH and EH7JX at 0005-0021z. They were all RST599 or RS59 to my 14dBd gain 2-stacked 7el Yagi, 34m high AGL. Jose was up to 20dB over S9 at peak during the propagation, and was heard until 0130z here. Hope more propagation after tomorrow.

Well its still very grim at 54 north. Thanks to Sporadic E to IS0, worked ZS6 last night (1st QSO in 2000) + hrd Z22, other ZS6s and V51 for a good 30 mins. Most didn't seem aware the band was open another 1500km further north and appeared happy enough working their regulars in South Eu.
Still waiting to ID a path to the south (in cycle 23!)from up here which hasnt been Es linked to the Med.

vp8/ 6m,unfortunately chris g3wos is unable to take a 5ele yagi to vp8 when he goes there & leave with vp8cmt.

H44 Activity - H44MS has been active from Honiara in the last week. I worked him on 10m over the weekend during a large TEP opening between JA and YJ8. Although he has 6m capabilities, he believed that 6m was still dead, and didn't bother setting up the 6m yagi!!! H44MS was due to cease operations this week, so we are now looking forward to hearing Peter H44PT from there.

I will be at my QTH in C6 from 4/4 - 4/10, QRV on six. I don't expect a miracle though. I will be working on the two-meter repeater there and checking out the C6AFP beacon on 50.062. It did survive Hurricane Floyd and has been heard since. I was down right after the storm but had my hands full and didn't get to look at it carefully.
I will be back from about 6/23 - 7/8. Hopefully, I will see some action then.

In the last two or three days, starting 00:30Z, JAs are working CT3 and EA8s (possibily CT-mainland too) on the long path. We always hear the EA8,CTs and most of the time we copy both sides of the QSO. This is really magic!
Some PYs also worked CE0Y/UA6AF. Victor is not a sixer. We need to grab him on HF and bring him to six. Victor and his brother are using a JRC transceiver and a vertical.
