(31 July 2000 @ 2145 hrs UTC) Greetings to all..my DX-pedition to FM 02 was a smashing success on the posted day of 26 July. My DX70TH suffered a catastrophic failure shortly before the 26th , so I had to make do with an MFJ 9406. In the 1 1/2 hrs that 6m was open, I made well over 50 contacts in N. America and the Caribbean. My apologies to those who waited on me in Europe and elsewhere. Maybe the band opening Gods will smile on me a little more next year when I do it again.(Chris N2NEH)

Left Holland Saturdayevening for a four week trip to VE2/1 and possibly VO. And of course .... the same night DX started again. No sign on JW here! Still need that one. Good luck with DX in Europe. There must be plenty when I'am away. Haven't got a rig here 8-(( so propagation in VE is also garanteed. Good hunting.

During the 1980s I completed over 1000 MS QSOs on 6 metres (and a similar number on 2 metres). Most of those contacts were NOT new squares or countries; I made them simply because I enjoyed MS so much. I have not been QRV during the Perseids since 1991 and although I believe the shower is not so good nowadays, I plan to put up a temporary beam (5 ele tonna) to try some MS on Friday, 11 August this year. I would love to make some 30-minute skeds for SSB MS (30 second periods), around 50.245 MHz between 07:00 UTC and 11:00 UTC on 11 August. The beam will be very low (about 4 metres AGL) so short to medium distances will be best (say 1500 km max). I can run about 100 watts from an IC706mkII-G. If you love MS as much as I do, please send me a sked proposal. 73 from Paul G4IJE (JO01CT)

CW vs SSB. During last two openings to NA I made 35 qso, but only 4 on ssb. Isn't possible to broke UK fall on ssb from SP (one ES hop more). CW filter, DSP make cw qso comfortable by clics, splatter etc. CW give more chance to make dx !

CW vs SSB: good point Joe, I hardly ever break a pile-up on SSB these days due to 'low' power here (50W to a 5 ele) but have broken 100% of CW pile-ups I've been in. It's better than having an amp (well, almost..). I didn't like CW at first but now approx 70% of all QSOs are CW: not because I particularly like it now, but it's effective, especially if you're 'QRP'(< 400W + 6 ele). Only trouble is, less and less DX is popping up on CW these days: please DX'peditions, use it a bit more.

RE CW vs SSB. Real DXers learn CW. You spend years sweating to get that extra dB out of your station, so six months (hard) work for the 10dB for CW is worthwile. Just MHO ;-)

Hi all. I just came back from my holliday at Ibiza EA6. Apart of all the sun, booze and nice girls I enjoyed I took my 706 with me. Listened a lot on 6 with a single wire dipole hanging at 3 meters above the ground between the trees and at 120 meters above seelevel. Every day at noon I could hear the EA8SIX beacon. Also most of the evenings CN8LI beacon was audible. And many times I heard the GB3MCB & GB3RMK beacons. Funny enough no stations has been heard making contacts! Was a witness of the 5A1A operation while whole Europe was calling. Wow Abubaker is a real good operator. Excellent CW speed and no nonsens with SSB. Pitty I was not able to do 50 MHz. operation. But it sure was fun beeing a SWL again. Worked quite some people on 14 MHz that needed Ibiza IOTA-004. And this time 99% of my operation was in CW. Who said times are changing? CW is still very populair at HF so why shouldn't it work at 50 MHz? So let those who like talking do sideband and the weak signal massochists, like myself, do the fun. I'll be back from JO22 now. Have fun and sun,

Mike, I will say I have missed about 12 countries now because I am terrible at CW and wish I could improve overnite. I copy calls OK even at higher speeds 25wpm but just can't get comfortable with this mode. I envoy the ones who are good at CW, one of these days maybe I too can enjoy many CW QSO's. Without a doubt there is a good place for this mode on 6M. Until I improve I will just post the ones I hear. I also enjoyed the opening on the 29th. CU in the pile-ups. 73 Kevin WB8XX EM79xk...55 Countries now.

Well the opening to ZD7 certainly revealed the egotistical nature of some people yesterday. Its all been said before and will probably be said again . In contrast 5A1A was in here for a short while on CW ( and boy was he fast !! ) working stations quickly. It's a hobby guys, let's not forget that - judging by some of the comments heard yesterday , some have. Mike, Peter(x 2), Yes, agree. Seems I have been gyping myself all these years by operating mostly CW. Over in NA, during a big opening or a contest, I think roughly 10-15% of my QSO's are on CW. (maybe 25% if I really stick to it fiercely) OTOH, I thought the EU average was higher, maybe 50%-60%(??) Perhaps in the last 7-8 years this has dropped off quite a bit. I remember June 92, I worked pages of EU---all on CW, and was very happy about that as signals were very weak. CW filter went on, and signals were all copiable at RST 309-419/519 etc. I think things are taking a turn towards more SSB activity (unfortunately). Guess I will have to dust off the microphone, hi hi!

Afetr half-hour or so of trying to work ZD7MY I simply gave up - there were too many "nice to hear you again"s, too many loud stations calling over and over and over regardless of whether Barry was in QSO or not, regardless of whether he was TRANSMITTING or not. How do these ops expect to get through when they can't even call when the other guy is listening????? Hate to say it, but the worst offenders seem to be in that geographical area where ZD is in a lot more often than it is here. RE CW vs SSB - like Peter BCG I also resort to CW to cut down pile-up size (but it doesn't do much for speed at 5 wpm I'm afraid), and I find there are different squares available on each mode - ALL CW or ALL SSB means you'll miss something or other you want, 73 for now
Mike GU6AJE <gu6aje@thersgb.net>
- Monday, July 31, 2000 at 09:33:52 (GMT/BST)
Any move by the DX station to reduce the numbers calling is, IMNSHO, entirely justified. As I'm sure you well know, Peter, QSO rate is related inversely to size of pileup. From the 'sharp end' perspective, it's fine if there's always a station you can identify every time you 'QRZ', but if everyone's the same strength (& weak to boot) and you can't make anything out of the 'mush' on SSB, a switch to CW can serve several useful purposes: it will usually reduce the number of stations calling (at least temporarily while they all work out what's going on); each one will be several dB towards readability (CW vs SSB), and they will naturally spread out a little in frequency - bang in the narrow filter and pick them off one by one. The optimum size of pileup to maximise QSO rate is exactly one station! 73 Peter G4MJS/9M6BAA

Mike Ve9AA, nice to hear you again. Re you comments on CW vs SSB. In EU, the majority of activity on 6 is from technician class (no CW) or folks who do not favour CW. In the UK at least all are permitted to try CW (even if not tested for it). There is of course a lot of CW activity. I can and do use CW when I must. But, IMHA many CW only folks are missing out on squares / countries. How many times have I heard locals say "very loud CW on .099 - no idea who it is!" (I can hear the self righteous chorous of so what!)One technique heard recently from a DX station was to go to CW only when the band was wide open(to REDUCE the numbers calling!!!) 73

I missed 95% of the EU DX yesterday as I had to attend the XYL's company picnic. However, at the very first of the opening, I managed to work many SP's , OM (2! for new ones) and DL. Heard many G/GI/GM, etc. very loud. Opening started very abrubtly and SP6GWB was in the log @ 1849Z on CW and later 1855 on SSB. He peaked a 5/5, while the rest of the guys quite weak at 4/1 & 5/1. Interestingly enough, for a change, I swapped SSB/CW every 2 CQ's but almost all of My QSO's were on SSB!!! I wonder how many countries I have missed over the years by sticking primarily to CW? With the signals quite weak yesterday, I thought CW was the key, but was very happy to log the 2 OM stns on phone. Anyway, alls fair in love and 6m dx. Very nice to see EU this late in the season. K0RI was probably K0BI EN72; dont have anything within 3 letters of WD4RBX(assumed 4 was correct) out of 3k QSOs since 1990, hope that helps. Yesterdays opening to Eu was very poor here, only hrd G0RUZ briefly on cw weak. It seems when there is an Eu opening that follows the great circle route to Eu through W1, I hear very little in past 2 years. If there is a carribean opening to Eu and then from here, or here alone, it is usually much better to outstanding. This, of course, is not the great circle route and signals peak 10-30 degrees south of true. Also there is no W1/2/3 stns wrking Eu, interesting. 73 all, hope F2 starts early

Hello all: I'm considering a trip to Jamaica to coincide with the 2d weekend of the ARRL eme contest. I will be taking 6 mtr gear along-I wonder if anyone knows of a cottage along the north coast-Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, etc., that is available for rentin November, has a good radio horizon, and 220v available for an amplifier? Safety is also a concern-papers here in the US love to print articles about muggings, robberies, etc. I appreciate any help you can provide. 73 Chris W3CMP ex WA3HMK

Just talked to my friend JW/DL3NRV in Longyearbyen on Svalbard. He worked about 70 stations (40 UK) during the opening tuesday. This is VERY remarkable because mountains covers the horizon in the southern direction from Longyearbyen. Anyway - he have found a spot with a small opening to southwest - and got permission to operate from there. Joerg worked with just a vertical mobile antenna and an IC-706! Because of the direction not many middle EU stations was worked, but he succeded in having 2 way QSO's to both Spain and Italy. He monitors OH9TEN and OH9SIX and can be active on short notice. He stays on the island 'till mid-september and hope to work many more on 6 meteres during his stay. I think he prefers CW - and I know he'll copy higher-than-average speed :-). I hope to go there myself within the next 6 weeks. A (very little) bit of information on my last operation from JW can be found at www.qsl.net/la7qia. 73 to all.

Re comments about 9M2 they were valid, no card sighted in four months from any other 9M2 despite complying with sase requirements. 9M2 also worked VK2, VK3, and it turns out VK5 during April May as well as 8 and 6. Many 6M ops email me two weeks after working 4W6UN, I think it is only fair to expect a card after 4 months. Which by the way has just occurred from OH2BR for VP6BR Thanks Jukka. DXCC #110.

Re 9M2: I'll do some research via my contacts in 9M6. I can tell you that there's no regular 6m activity in 9M6; 9M6GY occasionally goes on the band but he's not well sited or well equipped - doesn't stop him working piles of JAs, of course. Kazu JA1RJU/9M6JU is a regular visitor and often goes on 6m from Kota Kinabalu (but he hadn't worked 9M6 from his home call until he worked us back in March hi.) The 9M6AAC club station (OJ85ch) is by far the best-equipped permanent 6m station in 9M6 (I should know, I shipped it all there :-), and is available for any and all visiting amateurs to use. (www.qsl.net/9m6aac). The 9M6SMC (50.0145, 2W, Turnstile) beacon is co-located with the club station and is regularly spotted in JA, and occasionally in northern VK. Next 9M6BAA operation 15-31 October. 73 Peter G4MJS/9M6BAA

Still looking for any information on amateur radio activity from Myanmar. Re: 9M2 article on VK3ALM website, article was directed to lack of activity from the capital Kuala Lumpur (OJ-03)and no other parts of 9M2. Then again there's always someone who has to whinge/find fault with anything one does associated with 50MHz these days! As for QSLing, I personally witnessed 9M2NK answering his QSL mail while I was in KL, so HE DOES QSL!

15degrees is cold? WOW! Try nearly 40 C below most winters with -20 being a good day!. Add wind, snow, freezing rain and you have a typical winter in NB. I am sure our friends in the northern parts of OH, SM, LA, JX, TF, OX and JW can even top that quite easily :-)))))) 73 es CU soon on F2....if we even get any this cycle. At least the Es season has been VERY good to me this year. Better than '95 I think. Further to Conrad's comments about JW. He was worked from IO93 as I heard G3KNU make a QSO. There was no propagation from IO94 however, I listened for over an hour and heard only a 2 second (MS?) burst. It is 2700km from JW to IO94 which puts it inside the so called 'DX doughnut' too long for 1xEs and rather short for 2xEs - a tough one from here and most of GM too. There was a brief opening to NAm last night but only 2 worked. 73 Clive

RE: 4U1ITU As a life member of the IARC and a regular visitor to 4U1ITU since 1977 and also having spent nights doing MS contacts several years ago before daytime operation in HB was allowed herewith a a little info on the station. First check out the web site http://www.itu.int/radioclub/. You will see the station is currently closed to visitors. Re 6 metres until recently the 5 element Tonna had a feeder problem but in principle the station is now QRV on 50 MHz. The other problem is that there is now really only one active member of the IARC on the ITU staff and he is very busy and travels a lot. It is also unreasonable I think for the amateur community to expect staff members to give up a great amount of their free time to open up the shack. I also understand that there have been security problems with some previous visitors who did not confine themselves to the 4U1ITU shack when operating over night. On a positive note when I spoke with people in Geneva last month there was every indication that the station may make a surprise visit to 50 MHz so keep listening. I need 4U1ITU as well from the EI call! 73s Dave EI3IO - OZ3SDL - G3SDL

Nothing much to report here. Seems like I always miss the JX/JW openings. Never heard JW5RIA, and heard JX7DFA weak at 24/7, not sure if the qso is ok. Today (25/7)I got a call from LA2WKA at 1547z, he told me JX7DFA/B was in. I'll tell you, the beacon was 10-15 db over s9, but on and on went the keyer..... We tried his phone number, nil, I sent a fax, nil, after a while the beacon dissappeared. Little later the rest of eu had conds to him. Lucky guys. If anyone wants a good, clean recording of the beacon, it sounds like it comes directly from the keyer, e-mail me.

I agree, it's useless to give squares when there are good openings, for DX-stations, if you know that there is only 1 or 2 stations on that country. You can find in every bulletin that a Dxstations is in that square and that's his adress. But IF you need them ask a copy from the DL8EBW square list on disk, there are 42.000 calls on it from activ V-U-SHF operators!!!!!!! Look on the "makemoremillsonvhf" web page from DK3XT. 73's John.

re 9M2 report by VK2GJH on VK4CP page. The problem is not working 9M2, several have been worked including down into VK2 and VK3 as misreported. The problem is getting a qsl card. I conived one from the 9M2/JE1 as he wanted info about VK9X but nothing from 9M2NK or 9M2TO. Great response from 9M6JU and a half a year from the other 9M6, I am told BAA cards have not yetr surfaced either. So if anyone knows how to extract cards quicker I am sure VK2QF at least would like to know as well as others who may work 9M6/8 and 2 later on.

this afternoon a great european opening.lost count of countrys worked, but why oh why does everyone keep asking for the locator square instead of taking time to listen. Guernsey is in IN89 and although i agree that collecting squares is good it only spoils the opportunity for others to make the QSO when repeated requests for loc? i do send the locator at regular periods but to send it everytime at a qso rate of 1 or more a minute only wastes the opportunity for those that need GU as a new one. I only CQ on short Skip to give GU to those who need it. Just think what chaos real DX gets with this SQUARES obsession. 73 MU0FAL

Never known such good transatlantic condxns - 2000 will be remembered as a vintage Es year - worked more this year than in the last two, already! Only NA QSOs this time were VE9AA and possibly VO1GO. Raised QRZs and partial calls from K1TOL and K1GUN, but killed by QSB. Amazing to hear all the QSOs into mainland Europe, but from here it wasn't as good as the last few NA openings, nothing outside FN field, and nothing over S6. This was the SECOND very early morning transatlantic session for me in a row! Originally believed to be rare, these early morning openings may be more common than realized. Fortunately, the European video makes a great early warning alarm waking VE9AA, K2MUB and myself from restful sleep! The highlight was a SECOND QSO with 4X1RF on 2 x SSB with Chris peaking a solid 5 x 6 and busting a G pileup!! Hi - here is one for the 'magic band department'. I was listening to Fred, TF3FK at about 13.45z today working many G's and GW's - he was a good signal here in IO94 up to 59 but mostly 55/57 or so. Off the 'back of my beam', I heard Abukkar 5A1A calling him. I thought it was a hoax at the time so I didn't bother swinging my beam - he was about S3 off the back. However I have since learned that he was on the band this afternoon!! more fool me for not swinging the beam and trying to work him - 5A would have been a new one - and I bet Fred TF3FK will kick himself if he gets to know what he missed. It would have been some QSO 5A/TF. Looking at the map the path from 5A to TF goes right over this QTH .... oh well there are still things to learn after 14 years on 6m. 73 to all. Clive

I spoke too soon - TV qrm is back again in 3C. To relieve the boredom of no dx, am measuring the TV qrm with commercial test gear. TV qrm on 50.110 peaks at -60dbm, or 50+db over the noise thresh-hold. With a 10 minute peakhold, the qrm peaks at -50dbm!! That's a qrm level of 9+- S units which is about right. The ANC noise canceller can take about 35-40 db of this qrm away. Altogether, it is no wonder there has been so little 6m activity in this place!! 73s

I see the odd announcement on the cluster re: YU and simlar radio stations in and around 70MHz. Does anyone have a listing on a website somewhere of these 4m commercial stations please? Might make a good source for me to monitor for, for XATL Es to Europe. Still looking for my first 4m/10m or 4m/6m crossband QSO. Thanks VE9AA Mike

AURORA - 15/16 JULY: there was very interesting AU condx. I was begin on sat abt 14.00 UTC - some OH, SM and LA stns. OH6MAX had qtf 315, my 20 on 2m. Later from 16 UTC worked with SP6, OK1 and mni DL on 6. I've made: 38 QSO on 6m - 11 new loc dist less 1000km, 30 QSO on 2m 9 new loc with ODX 1515 km RX3QFM KO91, I found new stations and loc's. The most interesting: HB9QQ(JN47), S50C(JN76), 9A(JN86), OE(JN87), F6(JN09), US5(KO20), UA3MBJ(KO88), HA6(JN98). Hrd bcn's: ON4VHF(JO20), PI7FHY(JO22), DL)UB, SK7VHF, DB0SGA, OZ7IGY/a, OZ4UHF, DL0UH, PI7CIS all in AU, but no SK4MPI (!). My QTF was abt 20 - 40 deg. The dissipated power (www.sec.noaa/pmap) were at UTC 19.16 - 75,1GW, 20.56 - 678,8 GW, 2236 - 332,9GW, but A-index was only 130. I saw the AU light at UTC 23 - 02, but it was like sunrise - there was only a little cloudy. cuagn

Great Aurora Saturday ! Wkd large no. of stations. Never heard so strong Au sigs on 50 Mhz before much stronger than 6 April 2000. I could fill a number of "gaps" in my wkd-squares-map ... AURORA in IO68, ISLE OF LEWIS. Its was a very gud evening for the Aurora, worked plenty of G,GI,DL and PA stations until around 01:30gmt (16th) Beam was pointing to the east for best results, I kept checking for visual Aurora but at that time of night it was still light here. AURORA! Yes it was a good one and can be compared with those we had in 1979, 1982 and 1989. Big ones. In my memories when I worked these aurora's all at 144 MHz. it was also with the antenna much more to the east compared to the "normal" ones. I always put the antenna as far to the east as possible to create the chance to get more southern stations. Yesterday the "southern" ones were HB9QQ, F6BWO (jn28), 9A3DO, 9A9A, IV3NVN (jn65), F5OQJ (IN96) and MU0FAL (in99). It was my pleasure to see so many German stations in aurora. Furthermore most European countries were heard and worked. Heard SM3JGG with T9 sigs. Now I am leaving for vacation in EA6. Will be every evening at 20.00Z at 14.345 MHz. to hear what I missed on 6... 73:>

K=9 says it all I guess. Started hearing OK1DDO and PA0OOS calling CQ A. I didn't hear an aurora signal anywhere. I was beaming south, and they didn't copy me. Little later I worked SM6CMU/3 JP62, but still no good aurora signals. Heard several stations on direct path, nothing when beaming north. Later I heard YL3AG, he was strong with aurora when beaming southeast....even stronger when beaming northeast. After some hours with a few weak signals I heard GI0OTC working GW0GEI I was beaming more and more to the west, and GW0GEI peaked at 255 deg, still with real aurora signals... I worked a few more aurora contacts, but not good aurora up here. I worked GD, DL, PA, EI, GI on auroral-e while they were working stations on aurora. Very strange conditions, and I guess the aurora was too far south to be of any use. BTW I am in JP50HQ. Sorry for the long message... C U on SIX

Solar Flare! On July 14, 2000, a powerful X5-class solar flare from active region 9077 triggered an ongoing proton storm in the vicinity of Earth. The explosion also produced an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection. Material from the CME could arrive in the neighborhood of our planet as early as Saturday, triggering auroras and other geomagnetic disturbances.

More on my EU TV. I suspect it has mostly upper channels from whatever band on it. Ie: 60MHz ++, as I have never seen a hint of video on it, despite some days of 242/250 endstopping the S-meter on the 6m radio. Can anyone tell me the format for TV in Spain, Portugal , Germany, etc. Is this stuff all "PAL". Now, the UK TV, is it PAL, SECAM or ? In NA, I believe the non-digital is NTSC. This TV stuff is new to me, though have been following 48/49 MHz video signals for nearly a decade, I am ignorant of the "bands" and format used worldwide (blush). 73 and thanks Mike, VE9AA.....what about a nearby RF signal generator. I know I asked this question about the same time last year, so please bear with me guys. (hi!) I am wondering what frequencies my UK TV has on it. I got conflicting answers so remain totally confused. I own an ALBA TV, and to the best of my knowledge it was built in the early-mid 90's. Bought in London by a co-worker (on sale!) I presume it's PAL format (??) Has channels 0-30something on it. Several have told me it's old- E1/2 system or whatever, but I am wondering what FREQUENCIES are likely to be on it. IE: Is it usefull for seeing EA/CT video 48.240-260 video?

Willem HIP, I am fully aware of the contempary theories of what constitutes "Sporadic E" as we know it and all the theories as to what causes it.I see nothing wrong with using the abbrieviation "Es" as a substitute for "Sporadic E" nor do I see any wrong in the use of the word "hop".This merely indicates using more than one reflection point which is clearly the case with transatlantic propagation of this type.I am just using accepted terminology to explain the point that the latest NA openings were not F2 in my opinion. In the excellent VHF/UHF DX book Geoff Grayer G3NAQ has a subsection on page 2-44 entitled MULTI-HOP Es.I hope this clears up any confusion arising from my previous posting.I do however feel that this has been an exceptional year so far and like Peter BCG I will take any signal coming and work it, then discuss the mechanisms afterwards. One thing is for sure this year has reinforced the 6m band's status as the magic band.73

regarding DXCC and country status of former Yugoslavia on 6 meters: YT, YU, YZ - Yugoslavia: legal 6m operation since June 14, 1991. 9A, ex YU2 - Croatia: only contacts made June 26, 1991, and after, count for this entity. S5, ex YU3 - Slovenia: June 26, 1991, and after. T9, ex YU4 - Bosnia-Herzegovina: October 15, 1991, and after. Z3, ex YU5 - Macedonia: September 8, 1991, and after. for you Mike, this means: YU3 contacts made in June 1992 count for S5=Slovenia. Seems a bit strange, but only YU2 and YU3 6m contacts made in the few days between June 14, and 26, 1991 count for YU=Yugoslavia. S0 - Western Sahara, unofficial prefix, but good for DXCC (moved from deleted to active in April 1988). btw. you can find all DXCC rules, lists, application forms etc. in full detail at: http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/ This link and many others you can also find at my 6m-pages: http://www.qsl.net/oe4whg/ -have a look! 73, gd dx!

Looking at ALL the comments, the experience I have over the years, favour Es as the propagation mode in the recent happenings, a few years ago G6YIN was working into CAYMAN Is in the middle of summer and gave me a call on a UHF talk freq to alert me, the guy was calling CQ with NO answers, tuning on the qrg I heard him S1-2.....and of course called, John 'yin was rx'n 5-4to5 (can't remember his call but maybe John 'yin can) . worked him (just) then faded out with John; and (of course) came up to s4-5 with me, but no locals called (IO93) This year is typical of what has happened in many Es/F2 cycles gone by (and I've only seen 21/22/....23 god willing...gulp [better drive slower])....4m wise... a guy I was in qso with in the peak of the last cycle somewhere in New England (30db 0ver both ways) had a try with me on 4m (70mhz) and no qso xband resulted but he reported "just perseptible" cw there on my cw keyer,(160w+4ele) he said he had a log periodic antenna, but was parading to a pile up on 6m!..ahhhhh well 4M xband was achieved in the late 70's and has yet to be re-achieved.seya orf back to the FREE Bar !!!...David (an amateur observer of an interesting selection of Ether available frequencies in the scope of self training to the non professional within the rf spectrum)..urhh,uhh

I'm no expert but from my own observations in IO93, the openings to USA and SA have not been anywhere near as strong nor as stable as the last cycle, even with much better equipment. Signals with me have been subject to a lot of fading. The 59+ signals reported around IO80/90 etc have been S3 with me for a lot of the time. To me this indicates that so far the mechanism has not been genuine F2 but has had some element of E layer. Good fun nonetheless.

re the big usa openings of last week, multi ES + ? the charachtaristics of the openings are surely ES but what about enhanced ES caused by rising sprites from thunderstorms, the extra distance into w5 etc could be caused by the enhancement of these sprites.i know that during the big recent opening that tornados were reported in SE USA Just a suggestion as i have yet to see any indepth studies of this theory. 73 de Colin MU0FAL

Sorry about size - tried to put in on discussion page but it would not accept. I have to say that for most of the openings this year a number of points have been most noticeable. 1) The strength of the signals. I have improved my system , which has had an effect no doubt - but this effect is far in excess of what I might have expected. I note that others have also noticed the same effect. 2) the stability of the signals - both on short and long range contacts - hour on hour of stable propagation the some stations/ areas. 3) although there has been of course some noticeable short skip openings most of the events I have seen are beyond the 2000 kms mark. The number of opening to the 4X, 5B etc. , and beyond at great strength and with stability has been most noticeable. 4) Bach scatter - this year has produced the strongest and most stable BS I can remember. Of course part of it is in fact due to better equipment , more stations and louder stations but one thing most noticeable was the extent - in one opening I was hearing and working from GM to SP to SV to EA6 to EA7 - similar to that which occurred back in the last F cycle. On the 2 NA openings - I didn't work too much - nothing much was new for me so I did listen a lot. The openings started weak and built fairly quickly, without noticeable fading to a peak. The signals remained mainly on one target area at great strength for most of the opening and then, with little fading went away. Here was some odd signals at greater range in for short periods but again there was very little fading noticeable - they came in for a while and then went away. In the past we were chasing stations up and down the band as the propagation moved around - not these times. This also applied to the openings to FH, ZD7, the middle east etc. It may be that my recollection of past events has / is changing - I think not. It is clear to those of us that have been on the TV/50 MHz bands that things are now different. My belief is that there has been at least 3 mechanisms involved in the Summer time propagation we call Sporadic E (Es) One is Sporadic E layer, one is E layer and the other - ???. My belief is that a) there has been a slow decline in E's which is now showing more and more the underlying E layer. b) the E layer has increased in intensity and therefore noticeable. C) the E's has declined and the E layer increased. D) its none of the above but something else E) Could it be F1 layer? F) could it be F2 propagation. It has only really been in the last 20 years of so that the existence of the Winter E's season has been fully proven and used to good effect by us all - so what's against the fact that we may now be finding that there is in fact a Summer F(1 or 2) season. Or is it TAP (Trans Atlantic Propagation) !!! - no - being serious I genuinely feel the propagation has changed over the years - perhaps others that have access to other data can assist in trying to determine what is going on. It is interesting to see what others have observed - if that's what they observed then so be it - these are my observations.

Regarding YU3-S5 question, I think the wisest thing should be to check it with ZRS. Republic of fromer YU were recognized in early 1992, then received into UN and ITU membership, consequently gaining their own prefix strings. It is to see what date was intial for the use of new prefixes. Maybe DXCC committee would provide the quickiest answer? 73!

For VE9AA: YU3 (now S5) is not counting for dxcc these days. It will only count for Yougoslavia on your deleted dxcc-list. So for Slovenia you have to work a real S5 station. i think you also better work a YU-station for Servia to be sure. Some stations in Bosnie still using YU4-calls. None of these stations will be credited for dxcc so you have to work a real T9 station for dxcc. 73...bert pa7mm

Transatlantic Propagation: from here I would have said it was Es - my observations match Conrad's: signals were NOT steady for me, they were in and out and moving in area quite rapidly. I heard nothing into the D-line at all. The closer stations were there from beginning to end (ie VE9AA), but the deeper stuff was very fleeting. Maybe we had more mixed propagation than we realise? I know I'm not that far from 'BCG or 'HBA, but I seem to have had a very different opening. Something THAT selective spells E rather than F to me. Best turn this one over to the "propagation gurus", but like 'BCG, I'll work 'em whatever the mode, hi hi. 73 and here's hoping for more!

Question re: DXCC country status of former Yugoslavia region. In June 1992, I worked several YU3 and YT3 stations on 6m. Since then, I have worked S59A and S57A from that area. Does YU3(then) and S59(now) count as separate countries? I am in a race for DXCC against Chris W3CMP (formerly WA3HMK) and am at 86 worked, but only 77 cfmd. Having a hard time with a few QSL's. One from an HB9 stn. Just trying to get as many cfm'd as possible and figure out exactly how many I really DO have! Is S0RASD good for 6m DXCC? Have that worked and cfm'd. 73- Mike and GL on the FP guys...notes are that they should be QRV today. This is same group that just did CY9/homecalls, but with one added N1 station. 8P9JM QSL showed up today, thanks Mario, also today got PZ5RA, 3A2MW and FY5KE. Last 2 weeks had quick replies from VP8/CX/LU/ZD7/FR/YV/FH etc, guess its a silly questions to ask if anyone has had anything back from V51KC, for QSOs this past April? Also waiting a while for Z21KQ, anyone had a reply? I understand J87AB is currently on vacation, so expect a little delay. Finally anyone had a card back from UN3G's German QSL Mgr for QSO made after May 20th? ..Thanks

Conrad G0RUZ , With Sporadic E propagation you can not speak of an Es-layer, nor can one talk about "HOPS". Es is caused by CLOUDS of highly ionised matter. That's what it makes so unpredictable. Signals are often reflected between different clouds and then back to earth. (wrongly called Multihop)A better word for that propagation would be PIPELINING. One effect of this propagation is that reception of signals can be extremely selective (even within ONE KM)73 Willem

The openings to NA and the carribean recently have all be multihop Es in my opinion. The extensions into the other fields such as DM are merely another hop.The openings were very characteristic of Es in my opinion with rapid fading in a matter of seconds. Also the grids that I worked were in geographical groups 3 or 4 squares together. As I recall the F2 openings had the big guns such as VE1YX at immense signal strengths and were far less geographically selective. The only F2 I've heard this summer has been on the N/S path and all E's assisted.Opinions anyone?

Just a note on the recent N.A. openings. Best dx from here (IO80) was EL49 @ 7359Km at 20.20z 10/7/00 when I worked WA5UUD and others around the Houston area. I have my doubts that either of the recent openings to the states were via SpE. More likely I think to be F layer prop. The openings that G4IFX noted later on to El and DM squares on the 9th & 10th would seem to support this. Unfortunately I was in bed when they happened - work in the morning syndrome!! Signals here were mostly weak but very consistant on both nights, although there were of course also some s9 signals around as well. As a matter of interest the nearest station worked was VO1BHK in GN08 @ 3925Km. The majority of contacts were around the 5 to 6000 Km mark. These distances are more indicative of F layer rather than E layer propagation ...comments??

ALERT:- MAJOR SOLAR FLARE Approximate Flare Start : 12-07-2000 1219 SAST Approximate Flare Maximum: 12-07-2000 1239 SAST at Flux X 1.8 Approximate Flare End : 12-07-2000 1144 SAST [ SAST (Bravo) is GMT/UTC+2 ] This solar flare again appeared out of active sunspot Region 9077. This was a long-duration solar flare and I am sure we will receive report of ionospheric radio communications problems across the daylit hemisphere of the Earth. Region 9077 is located in the northeast quadrant of the Sun and is gradually rotating toward the central solar meridian where coronal mass ejections will be most prominently poised to impact the Earth head-on. The sunspot group is exceptionally complex and stands a good chance for producing additional X-class solar flares and associated coronal mass ejections over the next several days. From P.J. A bit more about the flare alert: "Auroral activity was mostly unsettled to active over the last 24 hours. Sporadic bursts of minor substorming were observed over the high and some dark-sky upper-middle latitudes regions. Similar conditions will be possible over the next 24 hours. On 13 July, a larger coronal mass ejection is expected to impact the Earth. The Space Environment Center and the USAF are expecting this disturbance to impact the Earth toward the latter part of the UTC day of 13 July, while we (STD) are favoring the early part of the UTC day of 13 July. Regardless of who is correct, the arrival of this disturbance is expected to produce the commencement of minor to major auroral storm conditions that should be observable over widespread middle latitude regions despite the waxing phase of the moon. Imbedded within the trailing edge of that disturbance should be a second disturbance just as large (perhaps slightly larger) that should prolong levels of auroral storming through much of 15 July. Additional energetic eruptive activity from the sunspot group responsible for producing these anticipated coronal mass ejections is also expected over the next several days. This week therefore has the potential to be a very active week for auroral activity."

Coronagraphs on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory recorded a fast-moving full halo coronal mass ejection on July 11th. Solar wind disturbances from that explosion and others could arrive at our planet within 48 to 72 hours. Forecasters estimate a 40% chance of major geomagnetic activity on July 14, 2000. Also, the large sunspot group 9077 has developed a complex magnetic field configuration that could harbor energy for major solar flares. NOAA satellites recorded a powerful X1-class flare from the active region on July 11th. More such flares are likely.

Jukka OH6DD(/8) just arrived in KP35 and will activate this square during the coming times.... I started experimenting with multiple antennas and proved very quickly to myself that at least two antennas at different heights are very necessary. Presently there is a 6 element yagi at 14 m and a 5 element at 37 m. Switching between the two shows the effect of ground reflection zeroes (sea reflection in my case) with varying conditions. Both are equally needed at least for the 800-2500 km range .... 73, Zaba ...

Hi guys, here in the south of England the NA opening last night was in two phases - W1/2/3/VE1/2/9/VO 1940z-2220z, then a pause although stations further north were still working NA, and then back again with mainly W9 and 0 from 2325z-0020z. We have said the same thing so many times that becomes boring, but some people seem that they do not (?) understand... (see my previous postings as well as SV1DH’s). Want it or not 6m are exempted from CEPT license in Greece, operation is allowed to Greek citizens ONLY and no permission is granted so far to foreigners. If something changes I will be happy to be the first to announce the good news...

Bryan, The CEPT agreement only allows operation equivalant to "local licence conditions". I'd suspect if nationals are not allowed on 50MHz without a special permit, "visitors" wouldn't hold a greater privilege ....if that puts it tactfully enough!

Could I ask if someone in NA could pass the word to the CY9 guys to get on 6 if still qrv .With the band wide open last night for many hours they would have given many a new one. In addition can someone pass the word to VP9ID to point his beam to Europe. I hrd him on Sunday evening ragchewing on 135 to US but couldnt get his attention.

Nice to get some dx last night to W/VE. Worked 75 stations ranging from GN08 to EN13 in the north and FM17 to EM00 in the south. W5OZI and AA5XE were ODX, both in EM00. VE8BY and OX3VHF beacons were in strong later on but nothing heard from the VE8 region(again).QRT at 0300 local when only sig on the band was OX3VHF.

Paul, verticals work ok, i have worked kh6 [10000km??] from my mobile with 10 watts to a quarter wave whip no problems and the carnarvon [vk6] beacon was heard in england many years ago [52 mhz] it was a quarter wave whip also on the roof of the local boy scout hall [13000km???], this was back in the early 80's, i have worked over 1000 ja station from the mobile as far down south as the south coast of VK6, verticals work, we only need propagation. keep trying, never give up, cheers Graham VK6RO/VK6SIX, good dx to you from sunny Perth OF77XX

Interesting and frustrating listening to last night's W/VE opening through an S4 noise level on a vertical. Only positive ID was VE3RM at S5 who I might have worked on a clear frequency. Other snippets were "FN41", "FN43", "Rhode Island" and "W1J..." but no complete callsigns copied. I've had great fun working EU with the vertical but it falls down badly on anything beyond 2000 km. 73 de Paul G4IJE.

Happy to see that many EU have worked NA last night (not a limited area as usual). I heard/worked VE1,2,3,W1,2,3,4,8,9 (ODX 7144) with some new squares. The signals were not strong here in JO20hi. 144 MHz was also magic (Es) before (UX,SP,OM,HA,SV). Enjoy with DX.

Finally made some NA last nite. W1JJM at 19.35 followed by KA1A 2 minutes later. Spent rest of the nite listening to some fortunate guys working piles of US. Also heard K3AX, W1TDS, W3EP, K2SPO and NA2M(?) but no luck. Got too frustrated at 21.00 and went to bed. Great finnish of very amazing 6m day. 73!

Finally got Z3 today. Z32ZM called me, first and only time I've heard Z3. DXCC nr 60 worked. Could not get ZA/N7BHC, TA3BD (vy loud), YM0KA (good thing I worked TA1AZ some weeks back), SV8AQY, SV3/DK?? (still need SV), Z21KQ (second time I've heard Z2), and 7Q7RM (third time heard, but have worked him). I could not hear anyone from NA tonight, but I heard all the europeans having fun. Even worse, JX7DFA was on 50110 during the evening, and I wasn't on ;-( Maybe next time.....

Last call for UKSMG Summer Contest entries. Today is the last day for posting / emailing your entry. Details of how to enter are at http://www.uksmg.org/sporadic.htm. Come on, add your log to the big pile of entries already received, lets' make 2000 a record entry year. Note: I'll be putting up a web page which lists the callsigns of logs received - that's the time to send me a query if your call doesn't appear. Please, no queries until then. I will be flexible about no-show logs as long as the circumstances seem genuine. 73 Peter G4MJS.

A very FB opening tonight and a pleasure to work into N. Europe. So far this season has seemed to greatly favor Southern Europe from here. Tonight marks one of those "magic six meter moments" that I will never forget! The contact with 4X1RF at 2124 UTC was my first with Asia and one of my longest distance Es QSOs ever. Chris peaked a solid 559 and both of us could hardly believe it!! A few years back I remember thinking I worked YM0PA (Asia) and spotting them all over only to find out there was some mixup. Thanks for a very memorable experience Chris! 73 all and gud DX from FN43ad...

To Zaba, etc. There are a few of us here in NA that say up VERY late here (3am some days!) and look over the pole if we are hearing OX, VE8, etc. bcn. We REALLY get excited when we hear the northern video, as we did yesterday. All of a sudden, around 22Z, we had 239/240/242/248/250 & 256 video with some 49.750 thrown in for good measure. A number of well equipped stations in VE9/W1 were calling to the north. Very intense backscatter and we certainly tried. I am still waiting for my first OH station on 6m Zaba!! Also needed badly in NA are: JW, TF, JX. Anyway, I even sometimes sleep next to shack if condx look promising and leave the radio on, antenna pointed north (I am crazy!) Shame about the 3A prop...I managed to break them on 20m, and the op was VERY FB . He left 20m p/u and went to talk to 6m op. I asked but no NA had been heard or worked. Wasn't for lack of tryin on our part. Every EU opening this week, a number of guys have been calling 50.200-210 on SSB and CW, so we are there, kWatts smokin! More later. 73 de Mike VE9AA......dit dit.....PS, before I forget, the CQWW VHF 2m/6m contest has produced nearly 100 QSO's(quite low count) but band was open last night on triple hop to DM04 area in S.Cal for HOURS!! Never seen such a long opening. Few on however, and no DX from PAC. (Mike)

8P9JM & 8P9BI are now QRT on 50 MHZ. Jim and I worked 490 stations in all US Call Areas except W6 & W7 and 23 Countries. All signals to the UK and Europe were very weak with deep QSB. The pile-ups were great and many stations did not get in the log because of partial callsigns yet many locator/grid squares were copied ! Jim and I feel that on long haul contacts reports should be limited to RST & callsigns. We hope that we satisfied some of the demand for 8P6 and were glad to give many of you a new one and some DXCC # 100. From Ross 4W6UN: QRT until mid week from today [8th]. Beacon alerts can be via VK2QF or VK3OT if available to call me. Ensure that the beacon is fully audible by telling them what you are hearing [ie: the beacons signage] as it takes 20 to 45 minutes to cross Dili now with the large influx of vehicles and people over the last 3 months. Plus I don't want any false alarms. If that fails message 4w6un@amsat.org and in the subject line only message what you are hearing and if I am available I will activate the station on six.

RE KT1J/CY9: Just spoke with them on 14198(0400z), and due to high winds they had to take down the six meter antenna. He said they would try to get the 6 meter ant up tmw, and would like to make some 6 meter QSOs. Personally he did not sound veery encouraging, but that is only my own subjective opinion. I did tell him there had been daily openings to Europe, and thanked me for the inquire about six meters. QSL to K1WY. GL all

Northern Europe to America has not shown any strong marks end-to-end. I have monitored the band since last Friday. Actually I am sleeping with three rigs tuned to OX3SIX, OX3VHF and 50.110, so that I'm pretty sure that I will wake up if any signals arrive over these normally quiet frequencies. Mostly I'm awake up to 2300 UTC, and these rigs will initiate the waking command after that. This will continue at least a couple of days more. So please put out your DX calls from time to time; it has paid off in former years as well.... See you on the transatlantic path.... 73, "Zaba" OH1ZAA (KP01RO) ......

What a simply wild day on 6m yesterday. Typing from memory, I worked VY0RR from the car (5w to a stick) and received a 5/9 report. They were easily 30/s9. Once I got home, all the following were s5-9. cu3ura, ox3vhf, ve8by, vo1za, ct0(both s3-4),cn8li/b-s2 and EA/CT stns. Heard eh9ib. Worked two CN stations. CN8YR(I think that was the call) tested my CW speed, ~40wpm, but solid QSO. Heard i0amu and ik0vaq working k1six, but no QSO. Worked 9h1xt for his first VE. Band was plugged solid from 50.079-50.275 and up. Thought I may have heard 5b4cy very weakly but not 100% sure. Had a beacon on 50.025.3MHz very weakly when the CT's were in, just a carrier with QSB. Anyone know what this was? Heard f5jkk and f5de FB copy, but never heard 3a/ohxxxx or 3a2mw, despite many attempts for a plea to EU to get them on 20m and send them to 6m. 3 or 4 "big guns" called for a long time on 50.205/210 but nothing heard. IMHO yesterday would have been the day for 3A or TF, but nothing heard. SIGHH!!! FB on the W7GZ/B. I have also heard that here w/ no live stations on the band. 73 - Mike, tired from all the DX

Well, what a night that was. I came home mid evening and the first checks on six indicated all quiet. Checked .095 for 8P9, nothing heard. Beamed 285 deg, heard very weak cw on 110. Went to look for beacons and found a very weak and fluttery beacon in and out of noise on.068, picked out various letters randomly: 7, G, W and Z but could not get a complete call-sign. Consulted the beacon list; W7GZ in DM locator! Back up to 110 passed through two weak cw qso’s in progress but did not stop find out more. Called cq on 110 and got a pile up of Americans, the first and loudest was N5WS from EL09, followed by stations in EN82, EM79, EM80 and a little later EM74. I am not 100% sure of the W7GZ beacon but I am as sure one can be without actually hearing a full and contiguous call sign. I normally record all my activities for post analysis but unfortunately in my haste, I plugged the audio lead into the ‘ear-piece’ socket on the cassette recorder and ended up with an hour of blank tape! A brief message to all the kind folk that have recently sent qsl cards both via the bureau and direct to me, I am out of cards at the moment but am in discussion with a qsl card printer regarding a new design. All cards will be 100% replied to in the coming weeks / month. Thanks and good dxing

Last evenings with the good propagation to the Caribien and South America i wonder why the dx-stations like J87AB, VP2V/ ,YV1DIG and others using the same frequence around 50107 and 50110, please spreat out a bit and choose your own frequence. The 8P9 boys are a good example using constantly 50.095 . That is ok, but using 50107 or so makes unneccessary qrm for the dx-stations selves and for us. At my qth some hams east of me hearing and try to work vp2v/w6jkv and myself try to work YV1DIG. I think YV1DIG was aware of this and he qsy.d to 50102. 73...bert pa7mm

The OH1SIX (50.025/KP11QU) pattern is basically omni-directional. The small ripple has been lined up with the local environment for "maximum equality" in all directions. The coupling to aurora has been improved by reduction of the vertical pattern slicing, which has also improved the common scatter volume for meteorscatter. This has been achieved by lowering the radiating structure in order to get a new ground reflection pattern. Ground wave signals have dropped, but this has been partly compensated by reduction of the feeder cable loss. Aurora signals should be at least 6 dB stronger .... 73, "Zaba" OH1ZAA ......

Re UK9AA: The chance to get UK into your log increased twice! Why? After the good deed of Udo, DK5YA , providing a transverter , another donation to UK9AA is going on. Peter, DJ6XV, handed over to Fedor a complete TRCV IC-726 (6m-band is included!). I brought this IC-726 with me to Kazakhstan and found a way to deliver this TRCV next week to Usbekistan. Fedor, UK9AA, who managed to arrange the opening of the magic band in UK, will also organize that another reliable operator (preferably the Clubstation in Tashkent) will qrv on 6m. Let us express many thanks to DJ6XV for this great donation on behalf of the whole "6m-family". I myself will go to Usbekistan within the next weeks and visit the 6m-operators there. Today I installed new antennas at OH1SIX (KP11QU - 50.025). The feeder cable was shortened 50 meters, and coupling to Aurora and Auroral E has been improved. Also it should be a good indicator on meteor scatter at the 600 - 1500 km range. The new antenna is an OH1ZAA V-stack. More details will follow. Regarding operating in other EU countries whilst on holiday etc. The CEPT agreement between member states clearly says that you may only operate under "local licence conditions" anything else is UNLICENSED USE and can result in a prosecution in that state. In some countries such as the UK unlicensed use is a criminal act and can end up with you getting a criminal record. This record follows you around on holiday too! Passport controls mean immigration can and do check up on this. Not worth it if you want an easy life! Just imagine the XYL "oscillating" as you are put on the plane/train home no amount of damping resistance would stop her and you would not need a radio for her voice to be heard 2000 miles away!!

Re: 3C. You might be looking the wrong way Alan. Maybe late-night 22:00 UTC+ for NA is much better. And if the ZD8-beacon is reported, you might have some prop aswell. And maybe you have to look at the southern hemisphere for propagation, the F2-season should start there again. GL

Ref: I0JX's comments on illegal foreign operations, the problem is that whilst local operators sit listening to the DX, and slowly negotiating with the license authorities, some foreigner arrives, flouts all the rules, and puts the negotiations in jeopardy. Is this not purely selfish, ruining the chances of patient amateurs to get a permanent allocation, just for the pleasure of working a huge pileup, and then sending out cards that are not valid for any awards? Please if you are going on holiday, check whether you are allowed to use 6m in that country. It would be rude and thoughtless not to do so, and may lead to that country not getting permission for 6.

The UKSMG has added the following words to the 'Operating Code of Practice': "FREQUENCY CONFLICTS: With the quickly shifting propagation as regularly encountered on 6m, it is quite possible that two stations who have been occupying a frequency for several hours running pile-ups without hearing each other, to suddenly find themselves in a clash. In these circumstances, operators should mutually resolve the situation as quickly as possible to avoid conflict. It should always be remembered that no individual operator 'owns a frequency', even if you have occupied a frequency for several hours." - It is also with great pleasure that the UKSMG welcomes another formal supporter of the 6m 'Operating Code of Practice', namely LABRE/SP - Paulista's Amateur Radio Federation in Brazil to join the other five existing supporters. Military in-band. There seems to be quite a lot of UK military use of 50MHz FM with tone sq & data also. Often heard here in Cornwall when they are playing games on the moors. Have also heard aircraft and mobiles. Could be worse - they could be on .110 - then we really would have to s p r e a d o u t ! 73

Hi all, during the NFD weekend I heard an American aircraft with the callsign Lollipop firing hellfire missiles at a target which was laser designated. I heard the ground station at different signal strength to the aircraft. I presumed it was USAF based in Germany as we were beamed on Germany. Is this normal for them to use 51.4 MHz ? 73s Darren G4VTQ

About the "nerves" that some seem to have regarding foreigners' operations in their country, such as 3A/xxx, SV/xxx, EA/xxx, etc. Difficult to understand why some insist so much in alerting people about (allegedly) illegal operations (e.g. look at the repeated announcements of SV hams on the packetcluster). First of all, if the operation is really illegal, that is problem of the operator who risks to get a ticket or something worse, not our problem (we may just happen to have one non-valid QSL more). Secondly they give the (hopefully wrong) impression that they do not like people "invading" their country. If our country is (or is pushing to become) part of the EU, we must get used to treat all EU citizens the same way as nationals.

Hi friends. Concerning the mentioned problems on 6m: we have a number of new operators who have a VHF-licenceand at once (with the spec. 6m licence) they operate 'HF'. They have no DX-experience what so ever nor have some of them our club publication nor '6 news'. Last sunday two of the made ATV on 50.106 MHz....! I told them, that such transmission are not allowed within the CW-portion, but they didn't care. We will have to talk with them, but believe me, its a hard job. 73 Pierre HB9QQ

A couple of words about the weekend's contest & the DX window. There was no IARU-organised contest this weekend, what you heard/worked were stations from different countries participating in their own (or perhaps each others') country contests. So there's no IARU policeman / adjudicator you can write to on this one. What you can do is to encourage *your* country's contest managers to incorporate (and enforce) rules about avoiding the DX window into their contests. It won't necessarily happen quickly, but that's the only way. The RSGB rules need tightening up here, I'll be seeing about it. 73 Peter G4MJS

Peter, G3IBI, according to the latest OPDX special Bulletin, (attached to bull#468 for subscribers) the OH boys in 3A, will be using their own calls on 6m. I cant imagine for a minute, such a high profile team doing anything other than following local instructions. Nothing happens down there without permission, or if it does its stopped very quickly! Congrats to Mario in 8P for his great QSO rate into EU last night, peaking 589 here at times. RE: qrm in DX-window. I know there is something to complain about, with some stations being really wide and operating inside the DX-window, but give it some time. This was the first contest with the band being really wide open for 2 days and stations spread all the way up to 50.350 (during the first contests they all were between .110 and .200). The same contest last year showed far more stations inside the DX-window than this year, so the message is gradually getting through. Give it 1 to 2 more years and it will be common practice to stay above .130. For cw users: let's get rid of the beacons above 50.070 to give us some extra space. If there are some 10 or so TV-stations booming in there is absolutely nowhere to go but between .100 and .110.

CONTEST!!! Well, I like contesting, no matter what band. But it seems that with all the effort of the UKSMG and others we did a good job over the years. Many stations contesting now. And apart to the lack of respect for the DX window stations need to be broadbanded and VERY dirty to get qrv in this contest. As I reported to a 4N he reported that conditions are so good!!! Even on my Tektronix spectrum analyser I've seen stations broad as 100 kHz. So another challence for the group. Let's write the IARU to get the contesters above .190! This sort out the problem with the EH's and gives the F's and others also a fair chance. I reported often stations at the cluster who were contesting in the DX window. Also asked them to QSY. And I really don't mind to be called a "COP" "Policeman" or ********. I hope we can solve this BIG problem before the next IARU contest. As far as my mood is now: Burn the logs of this IARU 6 mtrs contest. CU all after the contest,

Ah good some positive responses from EA6VQ, he has an excellent point re bandwidth available in other countries. Sergio, IK0FTA has posted some excellent suggestions. You see unless we "announce" our ideas no one will ever be able to discuss them. All I want to do through my recent postings is make people think round certain problems instead of moan or whine at or about them or even worse brush them to one side. My intentions are for us as a "responsible" group of people to come up with solutions that would benefit the majority and not as some correspondants have suggested, ways to make 6m fit round their personal lifestyles. If you cannot find 2 minutes to tune the band then you are going to miss an awful lot! I should point out that I am not one of these glued to the radio 16 hours a day....I bet I sit in front of it and the PC far less than most! See you somewhere on 6m John

Contest in dx windows? Dear OM's, here are a few lines to be considered as our contribution to the on going discussion. The problem of contest traffic in the 50 MHz DX window has been already discussed in Italy. As result, since 1998 frequencies below 50150 have been precluded for use during all 50 MHz competitions in Italy. This resolution arrived after some public discussions. The selected approach has been recently summarized in a paper, which is currently proposed for publication in one of the next issues of Six News. The paper is titled " How to "discourage" the use of intercontinental window 50.100 - 50.130 for continental QSO's?". The paper has been translated in French, Dutch, Spanish and Greek by F8OP, PE1MHO/PE1OQX, EA7KW, SV5BYR. It is currently available, in English, on the URL: www.sixitalia.org\articoli\how_to.htm and you are mostly welcome to give a look to it. As you can imagine, the use of the DX window for contesting in UK is having an impact on all the European DX traffic, and we would glad if a similar approach will be adopted also in UK. Therefore, should you be in favor of the proposed ideas, feel free to discuss them, and to disseminate. Tnx and cu on 6m!

Why not introduce contesting rules to say contest QSO's above 50.250MHz only. The suggested DX portion of 6m is then less splattered leaving those stations with a still tuneable VFO to enjoy 50.08 to 50.230 and those with apparent Xtal control on 50.110 to do the same if so required ?

John, I think you hit on a key point. Yes, those who sponsor these contests have some limited responsibility in this matter. I understand their desire to stay out of a political broil. Maybe a simple solution is a "bit" stronger language re: 50 MHz policy. After all, I can't believe it is their desire to destroy these most useful "agreements". More than ever IMHO we need the support of these sponsors. Best Regards...

John G0EVT, Personally I found the band busy and yes DX stations would have to have been tuning high to call CQ and be heard.I found several double hop signals above 50.250 quite easy to hear and work. I cannot except that it is fair to compare opinions during a major contest weekend. HF bands suffer just the same during CQWW etc. I still cannot understand how any operator can say that several DX stations calling on one single frequency can cause less chaos than the same stations calling on quiet freqs between 50.08 and 50.230 (contest weekends excepted). You cannot get 50 gallons into a 10 gallon hat! Though some still try!!

I used the term 'policemen' as it has been used by others and we all know what we mean. However, you are quite right Bob. Sorry. We can't blame other countries all the time though, at one time today there was a G3 cw contest station on .108 and one on .113. What's their excuse? Did they know/care - I doubt it. The only way to stop this is in the contest rules. As G4HBA observed, I also have a life outside radio and can't devote all my time to tuning the band and .110 is excellent to monitor dx activity.

Respectful request to all to turn the term POLICEMEN, FREQUENCY COPS, etc. into CONTRIBUTORS if done respectfully. Let's not forget that it is only peer pressure that binds gentlemen's agreements. I strongly suggest we all get involved and stay involved or we will lose what little ground we have gained. We have come a long way and we still have a long way to go. PSE get involved and don't just sit on your butt and complain!!! I hope to work some of you through the steadily growing attack on our calling frequencies and DX window... Vy Best 73...

I feel we either have to get ALL contest adjudicators to disallow QSO's made in the window, or give up the idea of a DX window. All we seem to do is create a nice clear window for certain SE-European stations to splatter 20 KHz. I think education has to be the key, I had to tell one YU ( I think) in th UKSMG contest that inter-EU QSOs were not allowed in the window. He was a club member, and was in the contest, but this rule had escaped him. I think he wondered why no-one was calling him! Who organizes/adjudicates this last contest? Perhaps UKSMG ought to intercede, and see if we can get the rules changed for the future.

John G0JJL - well you got your wish today. Contest stations all over 6m SSB and CW, including G stations. If any dx did come on the band it would have struggled to find a clear spot and I would have struggled to find it. You are entitled to your opinion, like everyone else, but frankly my vote goes for .110 and the policemen - it's less chaotic.

It sure is a magic and tragic band! This was my day: Left at 4.30Z from Amsterdam airport with a small qrl Cessna 421 airplane to London Soho. TRAGIC..Saw all the DX spots at the Telnet DX clusters about 3A...**** (sri WOS) What a bad day...I knew it and could predict it. So QRL must go on and feld very bad the day. Arrived back at home at 16.30Z. Said "hello" to XYL and get in the shack while XYL is complaining. Heard PA0COR working 3A2MW but nothing here. Only a lot of statics and rain I saw earlier in the plain... And than....Suddenly 3A2MW at S3...Called him, released the mike and at S7 3A2MW brought me the 7th new country this year. Aint it magic? 73's from a "happy">

Considering the number of stations on in EU I though .110 is quite quiet. There have been lots of G stations on .110 and I've heard several EU non contest stations complaining. Problem is (like in the UKSMG contest) those NOT in the contest use the DX window to chat - (less contest QRM)!!! 73[still chasing 3A]

and there was me thinking the dx window was closed for the day.did someone make special arrangements . i think the iaru need to look at the rules again and go by the uksmg idea of honouring the bandplan, not everybody wants to work in a contest and we need the window open in case a rare area comes in,openings can be few and short and at any time , on any day including today.in other words ALL CONTESTS ABOVE 50.130 AND THATS IT.

As G7BUR says 3A turned into PH1 but quite a few G's etc thought they were working the 3A...if you called in at around 18:35sh onwardson 50.220 I would be tempted to call another 3A at a later date just in case! Possibly G1SWH and QSO's later worked the other station

Heard YZ1AU very fast CW 50.104 @ 1654 UTC. Attempted QSO but speed was too great once the QSB set in. Can anyone find out if he heard me 1 July 1654 UT? QSO is considered INCOMPLETE here in FN43 (New Hampshire) :-(

Why can't contests be held above 150 ???? Heared a YU1 tonight contesting on 117 and he was so wide that he QRM-ed all over 110 .... hope that no DX was calling at that time? The "CQ & QSY 110" on the side of this page is a very good idea! Now lest work on this contest thing to keep 110 clear! By the way: it was not that hard after all to get that 3A... seen their geographical situation ...

Update from Dick, K5AND: "Hi Chris... Just spoke to Jimmy on the phone a few minutes ago. I was trying to help him fix his amp over the phone. Sounds like it took a couple of hard knocks in shipping as he has a couple of loose wires in the rf compartment and the loading cap was damaged slightly. He thinks he'll have it on the air in an hour or so. He was not able to put up the big ant as it won't clear the roof; so he had to put up half of it. He has 5 el on a 20" boom up and running. He worked about a 100 US stations yesterday. That's all I know for now."

I had my first 3A contact with 3A/OH1RY at 0809 UTC on 50205 this morning, and I was told that it was the very first ever QSO from Monaco on 6m. I wonder if there is any claim for an earlier QSO before I open the beers. (at least PY5CC was not the first for a change!!)

LU2EG Alberto. Thank you for finding a polite way to say what we all know. In any country there will always be the few who think that the rules or not for them. We can only change this by example. Hi all, Fantastic multi-hop Es to the US and VE today. At first, found WA6JRA at 2320z, and worked KA9CFD in EN40/IL with RST559 shortly later at 2333z on 30/6. The distance to Jay is calculated over 10,000km!! The propagation should be the first Es to W9, but W9 is since F2 in 1989. Then W5/W6/W0/VE7 were worked or heard at least until 0430z on 01/7. 2-stacked array seems to be working well not only for F2 long-path but for a long-haul multi-hop Es. Looking for Europe this evening (07-11z). FB DX on Six,

I agree totally with Peter PA2VST.I worked John Webster 8P6JW with my old call G6ZTU on the 13/12/89 and he was 40db over S9 for about 2hrs.I had a 5 ele tonna at 6m agl some very lossy coax and a very deaf rig.I only got the QSL recently as I never bothered back then.I really hope that we get a couple of 89 type F2 openings this autumn (fall for non G ops hi)just so the people who have come on 6m recently get the chance to experience them. The first thing I used to hear was the the ZD8VHF beacon ahh those were the days!GL and 73

Yes I agree the logo on this page makes sense...however the problem with this technique is that not many people do QSY ! Hence the problems. Years ago I was in a school concert and we had to learn a song that says it all about wanting others to follow the rules..."Sail your dream boat" That is what wanting people to QSY is...a dream!
