To Guy, ON4AOI. Sorry I can't be of assistance with you're qsl requests
but I don't think the qso's with TK will be valid for 6m DXCC as I beleive 6m operation is not permitted from

For Chris, GM3WOJ I can advise that there are NO QRO TV stations in the whole of VK6 below 64.250 MHz. 64.250 is 100Kw erp in Perth (and also 64.240 100Kw from Albany). A bit too high in frequency to be useful unfortunately.

- Sunday, January 30, 2000 at 08:34:55 (GMT/BST)
Please have confidence in the DX chances for 50 MHz. The
flux value prediction is much closer to reality than the
spot number prediction. Note that June 1999 had an average
flux of 169.8 and an average spot number of 137.7, while
August 1999 had a flux of 170.7 and JUST 93.7 spots. The
big question is, what is more representative for the MUF,
the flux or the spots? Personally I would follow the flux,
as the best indicator, looking especially for the dropping
edge after high values.... Remember, that the season and
ionospheric geometry are far more important than spots or
fluxes.... and temporarily a flux of 125 is a low value.
However, the coming 5 weeks are the best for the VK-Europe
path..... If the band sounds quiet, the only way to attract
the DX is active calling....Good luck......

Hi all - just a suggestion: Why not use the discussion forum - see links at top of page - for the VK/EU "debate" and the discussion on MUF/F2/prop logging etc? It would take a bit of pressure off this page..there is a forum called "Propagation" which would fit perfectly. Also, the forum gives you a chance to follow a specific line of interest (thread), instead of having to scroll up/down here to read the various postings and understand the cross-references..

Lime in 1988 after any event people get a shock when they miss out and there is a lot of soul searching. I just wish someone would advise (prefer 885) what tye were hearing 2 days ago. Sitting on 110 "all day" might be OK for some like duck shhoting, balzing away from the swamp at anything that flies by. My plans are to bge a little bit more scientific in my attack on 6M and lead a life and bring up 2 teenage children. Also be aware between VK6JQ and the east coast there are no longer many active stations like 8ZLX who has left PG66, VK8GF who is currently in VK5 on a yatch race and that leaves VK8ZAA with no cw (tech calss) and VK8TM. So my friends in Europe the dedicated operators who spent hours setting up the 6M contacts of last cycle are no longer there and YOU will have to work harder on the path, not just reside on the prop log, which fails dismally as the events of the past few days clearly show. Not one posting from your sid about the opening to YO. Not One.

It may not be a startling observation, but it seems to me that the level of activity on 6m from EU & USA is directly proportionate to the level of reports posted on the various prop loggers. It also seems to me that the majority of DX stations do not have www access in the shack (me included). Wouldn't we all as amateur RADIO operators be better of listening to the acknowledged 6m liaision frequency of 28.885MHz where reports, comments and propagation is montiored and logged in 'real time!

VK-EU path- although I missed the opening Tuesday (some of us do still work for a living!) last night I made the effort to be in the shack between 06:30 - 08:00z. Strong 47.749 TV up to RST 59, 49.750 (multipul offsets) up to RST 57, 48.250 RST 53. I worked JH0HQP at around 03:30z RST 59+ beam heading 10degrees west of straight line path, later at 07:00z heard JH0HQP calling CQ RST 539 peaking on a beam heading of 315 degrees (JA is 345 - 350 degrees). Clearly the prop is towards EU at this time. No EU signals heard on 6m, and no replies on 885! Went to lower part of 10m and it was full of I stations! Let's hope this continues to build as we progress towards the equinox.

hang on a minute, just down the page we (VK) are being castigated for making a lot of fuss and "No prop above 37 Mhz" was used as the excuse for no dx.
Congratulations ona great effort by John, I was busy yabbering on 50.165 with an old friend JA5CMO and took a quick bite. As Peter says you have to weld yourself to the rig and the prop log failed dismally in alerting until APG posted 30 minutes later, which is after all only human. I still havent found a way of sedning CW and typing in the log entry and entering on the prop log.
Well done VK4KK P for persistance. Even though many in VK castigate him for his methods, it is after all the results that count. Have a beer for me Peter. better luck next time.

After some interruptions due to severe lightning storms, I can report that VK6RBU Bunbury 50.306, VK6RSX Exmouth 50.304 and VK6RPH Perth 50.066 are operational.
VK6RSX is 1100Km north of Perth and not that far from the location of VK6PA who enjoyed such good results to Europe last cycle. Unfortunately Steve is no longer active and there are no active stations in that area at present.
VK6JQ is about another 1000Km further north still.
A number of stations are active from Perth in the vicinity of VK6RPH.
VK6RBU is about 150 Km south of Perth beamed at ZS with about 100W erp.(i.e. 25W tx power plus 6dB antenna gain).

Great efforts on the Australian side of the VK-Europe
path! The biggest frustration is generally if one has
a feeling that there is NO activity on the other side.....
This thought may easily rise on the USA-side of the
transpolar path to Europe e.g. around 01.00 UTC, when
MOST operators in Europe tend to sleep....... Well, times
are close for the VK-Eu happenings again. I did log 17
stations from down under (VK3,4,5,6,8) one day in
February 1992 on the downslope of solar fluxes (140).....
Unfortunately I'm mostly 270 km's apart from my station,
but I'm wishing good luck to the alert operators......
Active calling is certainly needed, as beacon ERP's are
too modest for fringe conditions, and just spotty areas
are "miraculously" linked during MUF-peaks, mostly for
a few minutes each time .....

Re: EU and my posting yesterday. VK4KK rang me to say he had worked YO7VS on .110 around 0730. YO is EU isn't it? I was having an afternoon nap. Turned rig on and John (KK) was working VQ9PO. Very strong video crud at the time which was all I could hear (other than very weak cw beaming directly at Channel Zero our local beacon) The only station replying to my calls was JA. This event was during a "lull" in JA prop. I know it was "early" GMT but I've worked SM even earlier during JA opening. I know it's early season wise but it IS the Magic Band and we did work XE yesterday. Why not YO??? So there you have it! Worth making a posting which I did. Before going out & drinking 49 beers which I was preparing myself for anyway...hence the afternoon nap! Hope to work you all on six very soon...even if I have to get a plane half wat to do it!!

Re comments on Europe, sorry if I was part of the raising of hopes but from where I sat last night it sounded good, so which would you prefer, a crow sitting on the fence or nervous ninnies who maybe occasionally get it wrong.
I heard VK4APG, VK4BRG, VK2BA, VK2QF, VK6JQ all calling CQ or CQ EU. Are you suggesting that these respected amateurs were wrong to do so? Better to be there than be square, so all you fence sitters rest assured that there are many over this way that have the will to work EU and are looking for the way.
I have all the audio streams on my pc, when i encode them Ill send them to G3WOS and you can be the judge of what the TV was what mode and where from.

My private sunspot number prediction of 88 for the peak
of cycle 23 given earlier on this forum is presently
still quite much closer to reality than the official
forecast of about 140. My guess was based on a quick
iteration of former cycle plots. However, if the shape
of the curve follows Cycle 9, then there is still hope
for a decent peak, but I'm pinning my new (2 minute)
iteration for the peak at 104 spots in May 2000. I'm
convinced that human made solar models are far too
simple to do more than random guesswork. Almost all
former official forecasts have been withdrawn in the
course of running cycles. Still the scientific work
done is impressive and very important...... And if
you make noise on the band, there will be plenty of DX
......

Hi Guy's. Still believing in a great cycle? Read the following
message that was found at HTTP://spacesience.com/headlines/y2000/ast20jan_1.htm:
When will the solar maximum actually take place? Recent work by David
Hathaway, a solar physicist at the Marshall Space Flight Center, and his
collaborators indicate that the solar activity will peak around the middle
of the year 2000.
"Our predictions have consistently targeted 2000 as the beginning of solar
maximum," said Hathaway in a recent interview, "but the latest numbers
suggest that the peak sunspot count in 2000 will be a bit lower than
expected. The projected peak is comparable to, but lower than the peaks
of the last two maxima (in 1989 and 1978). That would put all three of the
recent sunspot maxima in the same class -- above average compared to all
the sunspot cycles since the mid 1700's."
Though still look forward to work you. 73's:>>

Hi, Has anyone used the MFJ1026 Noise Cancelling Filter on 6m at all? That or something similar seems the only way forward for me if I am to work any aurora, as I have a nasty noise source just to my north, which is about S9, and is always there during hours of darkness. Ar is marginal at best here, and the signals are always below the noise. Daylight auroras would be nice, but never seem to reach me down here. Also we are running out of time for EU from VK3, last date worked Feb 17th 1992, so we have three weeks or one solar rotation and then forget it.
Also VK8GF travels back to VK5 this week so its VK8ZAA and VK8TM anchoring PG66 and I didnt hear the beacon yesterday so I think it is off.

PA1SIX de VK3SIX as one SIX freak to another I fear you have become an online junkie, it is radio Peter not ionogramms and all the other theory stuff. How did we ever work each other without all these PROP (an I mean in the support sense) facilities.
Use your hunch and common sense. I hear all this Eastern EU TV and I can barely raise a comment. I hear 48.260 TV and 2 hours later a PA gets out of bed with a copy of the morning paper and a cuppa tea and flips on the rig and hears the same 48 TV 5x9. Bit late 2 hours.
Instead of staying at the radio I am inside watching TV as I get the impression no one wants to work VK3 and are content to wait anohter month and work the asy stuff (VK4s on a dipole) ah well. Alas alack.

In view of the recent allegations about illegal activities in the past ten years, in my opinion some sort of law and order is desirable for the long term outcomes on 50 Mhz and not just the short term gains of yet another country on 6.
You only get a certificate for 100 all above is arbitrary in my opinion.

Also regardless of the vagaries of the propagation path there is also the assumption in observations is that all stations are equal which they are not, all operators have the same degeree of operator capacity which they have not (and thats set to get worse from a US perspective withe dropping of the cw to 5WPM) and then the final one You have to hear it to work it.
Keep trying.

Neil (XE1/G0JHC)... ditto Peter's VK4APG comments. Regardless of the prop. between XE and VK3/ZL, no signs of the path were seen in VK4. Like Steve says it's a damn longway between anythin in VK, so the difference between VK3 & VK4 prop is like comparing G to southern EA or northern I. Closest indication has been VK2QF working HP3 (some 500km south) in the last week or so. Anyway we'll be looking that way when you safely back in G. Good luck.

In late today after quick trip to VK5LPs place and back for you English thats about 1000 kM round trip in about 11 hours and about 500 kangaroos missed. And just one 2m repeater on the whole journey. Temp varied from 33 degrees to 37.4 degrees outside during the day.
Got home to hear the tail end of the VK to Central America path. It manifested itself with a 55.2500- Videeo signal coming from 165 degrees abnd pronounced NTSC sawtooth raster.
VK3AKK confirms signature and beam direction. At best it was 559 and had polar modulation on it of about 3 hZ.
Very interesting propagation 11,500 Km approx to the region of Chile where the TX is located. Dont know how to work anyone given it is 600,000 watts erp.

Good comments, Bob. Recent opening to Upper Central US from vk4 coincidental with JA opening from my latitude of 27 degrees and preceded by short opening to KH6. Also about same time as west coast US to south pacific. Sounds like the TE bulge or what ever one calls it was involved. See Steve's "model" in previous post where said bulge gets a mention and appears essential for "model" anyway. I'm grateful for any inter mode hookups &extensions. Cu on six!

Before the issue of these very long haul Geomagnetic crossing contacts scrolls away: A) The first long haul episode took place during a period of very elevated Solar Wind and moderate S. Swing of the IMF. Aurora was reported by high latitude stations. B) The "first episode" took place very close in time to when KP4 was reporting 144 MHz contacts crossing the Geomagnetic Equator- deep into S. America (pse correct if I'm wrong about this- I believe it is an important part of the evidence). c) Another case of very long haul, equatorial crossing and aurora with moderate Solar Wind BUT intermittent periods of Strong Southerly IMF. Maybe just coincidence??? Best Regards & Gud DX All!

VK3OT et al: I've waited a bit on this one and there are some good comments pro and con (re: TEP). I never said the mode was entirely TEP but I stand behind my original position that there is a "reasonable" probability that the prop. mode was NOT Pure F2. This includes TEP "assistance". These paths are VERY unusual and do NOT fit within the bell curve. BTW: Again, I feel terrible about bringing this entire issue up again and if you wish-- feel free to download the ($0.00) FCC dollar again. I probably sound like a "Limie" cause I have read many of their papers and have a great respect for their work (not to mention great strides in Tetrode design). Vy 73,

Hi All, just got back to this web cafe, the 2hr round trip on a very full bus at 31c is no fun!
After very poor conditions (22-30 Dec) I finally worked ZL2AGI at 2327z on 31st Dec. Since then 6m has been open daily to ZL for many hours anywhere between 21-02z. New Years Day was the high light with 23 ZLs worked in 10 grids on both north and south Is, along with VK7GK. Jan 2nd brought an answer to my cq with Steve VK3OT (documented a few days ago by Steve I think). Frank ZL2AGI reckons I worked 95% of all active ZLs last Saturday, during a two hour stint, so not expecting too many more this week! All other paths remain DEAD. Didnt realise my QSO to VK3 was that far, the great circle map Id done on the PC and brought out here, blew off the roof my 1st day, so Im a bit lost with out it!
Regards to all, QRV until 01z 12th Jan, but getting bored of chatting to ZL2KT for hrs each day (no offence Ray). 73

RE: TEP. Steve, you seem to believe that you're too far south for TEP. I can't speak of your exact situation, but I can tell you that I am at exactly 45 north, and during the month of October I was working true TEP into the South Pacific, F0, A35, etc., up to 4 hours after my sunset. During that period we had F2 to VK around sunset, then 1-2 hours later the band would open to southern pacific with lots of QSB and flutter on the signals. I have to believe the mode was TEP, and I think I'm at least as far north of the geomagnetic equator as you are south. On the other hand, your current openings may well be F2, I'm not seeing much TEP this time of year around the world. 73. Bill

Steve VK3OT, i have worked 1004 JA's from my mobile with powers from 1 watt to 50 watts with a quarter wave whip on A.M., F.M., C.W. and SSB over about 3 sunspot cycles and the only true TEP i encountered was from above the 26th parallel up in the tropics while on holidays, believe me it is rare to get true TEP from my part of the world [and yours], i am closer to Heard Island than Japan?.If the above statement about TEP from below the 26th Parallel is proven wrong, please re-write the books. By the way this Es Season has been a complete disaster, not one satation worked but i did hear VK6RSX in Exmouth last week for a few minutes. The low power operating mobile was real good using TEP while ABOVE the 26th Parallel, very strong signals from the JA's. cheers to all Graham VK6RO near sunny Heard island in Beautifull Perth.

Hi, I am searching for a source that can provide me information
on power combiners/matching circuits for a broadband PA.I have
found cheap 60V FET's that can go up to 50 MHz with still a high efficiency.
The new design I have in mind will cover HF and 6 metres.
The problem is allways the output circuit. The 4 device amp. is allready working
and delivers 400 Watt clean output within the 1 dB compression point.
But it is now made with a RG58/Toroid core. And this becomes a
little warm. Also it is not a broadband application yet. Can someone help me?
I will publish the design after a pile-up/stress test in Six News.

Lets cut to the core JA8NAE just reported from QN13er VK3SIX in QF02wh about 9050 kM, if I hear any more talk about Trans Equatorial propagation explaining these daily events Ill spit the dummy, QF12 is in the roaring 40s hjalf way to the pole and so is Hokkaido island. The only association with the TEP theorem is that we are hjalf way each way from where the Geomagnetic equator crosses our common Lonitude of 141 degrees.
Bet you a box of beer that the propagation from VK3OT to Northern Japan is NOT TEP. It is F2 with a bounce off the top of the TEP bulge. Want a bet anyone?
I haved worked JA at 0400z or 0200 Local mean time mid path every month plus/minus an hour since arriving in this colony in 1976.

Hey Bob not fair. You remind me of these Limies who disqualified me from their summer contest cos I worked North South and beat their summer record east west by about 1000 KM but they said not fair, as it was TEP. What TEP at 38 south to 38 North.
The qso with Mexico today exceeded the original DX record set in VK in the IGY in 1959 by VK3ALZ to XE1FU at 12,900 kM which stood for twenty years. G0JHC/XE1 to VK3OT was 13,395 KM with a genuine 100 watts at each end.

2 questions regarding 6m/hf rigs...Is there any truth that
Kenwood is coming out with a radio to rival the FT-847? I am thinking
about an FT-847, cuz I like the wide rx coverage and the addition
of UHF. Not really truly happy with my IC-736,(45-60Mhz only) hi!

Happy Y2K All. I read Steve's (VK3OT) post and it brought a smile to my face! Actually, I was attempting to set up a wager on who would be the first two stations to complete a TRUE F2 QSO on 6m in Y2K. The winners would receive either one ARRL or one FCC dollar (equal value- especially considering our most recent license restructuring announcement). My wager was VE1YX > ?. Only rule is you can't cross the geomagnetic equator (not easy). :-) 73 All...

VK3OT, Yes let's work eachother again this year. Sounds like
it is more than a century since we worked. At least it feels
that way... No matter the way we count, digital, octal, decimal
hexadecimal but we all start with "ZERO". So in my point of view
we started the new millenium now. But it's okay with me if you like
to wait another year. But let's make that QSO this year. Okay?

My Millenium clock says 0 days 0 hours 0 minutes 0 seconds so I will take it back to the shops today?
It is 01/01/00 in either US or real world format. so Happy Y2K, the only bug was a bus ticket machine failed and no tickets were issued for bus rides in VK7 and VK5.
Hope all you IT guys spend your overtime money wisely, when is next opportunity?? 29/02/00?
I see K1SIX trying for first QSO of the year on 6M.
All the aircraft grounded in VK was a bit of a buzz especially as we all fly on UTC not Aussie time so watch the telly at 1100am EASST 2400Z.
The hostages are all free in Afghanistan as well as the CARE Aid worked in Yugoslavia.
Happy Y2K see you on the magic band we hope.
