Guys. Can anyone tell me the latest on CEPT operation on six from SV9. Taking my IC706Mk2G May 8 thru 21 and will be on all bands 20 to 10, but not sure about six.

Back home finally Friday, so far have processed around 500 QSL cards for 4W6UN HF and 6M maninly to JA/VR2/BV2/9V1 will mail out today in between family duties and 6M operating. This is from the irresponsible 6M op who everyone loves to hate and who was castigated for working 1930 QSOs to 32 countries in 3 weeks and banned from posting non-JA events on the web cluster. I dont hear anyone complaining about my qsl managing duties, they would not dare!

John 9G1BJ has now left Ghana and is back in the UK. His home call is GM0FQV and he is QRV from Annan in Dumfries and Galloway using an IC756PRO to a 5 element at 70'. BINGO !!! BV2DP worked at 09:33UTC today 29-Apr-2000 with 5/9 signal reports.
ZR1L also worked BV2DP with same signal report.
Other stations active : ZR1ADI, ZR1MPP, ZR1L, ZS1DB, ZS1EK and ZS1GRM
Also worked 25 Japanese stations since yesterday also reports were very good from 5/5 to 5/9++

The TEP season is drawing to a close here and openings to Europe will be infrequent until late august. With Es now starting in Europe the next couple of weeks will probably offer the best chance for stations in IO/JO/KO to work into Africa. If you have strong Es openings to I, SV, LZ etc. especially around 1100-1300 and in early evening please listen for weak stations calling under the strong Med stuff. Would even help to take an occasional standby for Africa. 73 and see you in the pileups.

It was nice to work some E's today I had signals from YU starting at 11:15 UTC.The band stayed open until 17:00.3CTV was S9 for about 2 hours.I guess Alan is away.I also worked TR8CA and was called by someone after that but got QRM,ah well.The other thing that really bugged me today was the guy signing EH/G8 whatever it was.I told him that his operation was illegal and that he was effectively a pirate.He apologised and went QRT only to reappear 20 minutes later.Please do not work these people,they jeopordise any future CEPT agreement we may have with EA.Please respect the host countries laws.He was all nice and polite but obviously had no intention of doing anything about it.Grrrr.73

Today we finally had some Es in europe. EH/CT/I/9A and DL on bs. EH sigs were VERY strong with needle in the right corner. EH3AR was 51 on a dummy !! Also looked for PZ5RA but didn't hear him on 50.120. Maybe something tonight too.

For the first time in many months- I've reconnected to the RF Packet Cluster in anticipation of the upcoming Es season. If I see any abuse I will cease all warnings and revert to the RX only mode. This means the only warnings I will transmit will be via talks. I sure hope this abuse has come to an end! Here's hoping for a good Es DX season... Best 73 (ex-WA1OUB)

Good morning. Can Any UK Op's recommend a Make and Model of Digital Cordless Phone which appears immune to 400w of 6m RF, and if possible good at LF too.
Im on the verge of trashing my "Cable and Wireless" sets (Mr WOS you should be ashamed!) as I cant stop one ringing when ever I key up on 40 CW and the other cuts the call off when I key up on 6m. This hasnt been an issue since I got them, as Ive only heard 3 workable signals this year, but hopefully things will change during the Es season.
If Anyone can recommend a handset thats happy on top of the 6m Amp and less than 20m from the ant, I'd appreciate it.

Hi, For Conrad, 'RUZ - you were putting a good CW signal in here yesterday afternoon, and I was beaming SW. Ditto with hearing weak Africans - well, very I had weak sigs where the cluster said there were AF stations. 5N3CPR was just lifting out of the noise when the doorbell rang - the 5N disappeared faster than the visitor, of course. I agree with you Johan.I was qrv for a long time yesterday and band seemed to be teetering on opening all day.I also get weak African dx almost everyday.D3SAF was 41 with me for at least an hour very frustrating!I could hear very little of the Europeans working him.I had a 10 min E's opening to JN13 with F5QT the only station heard and worked.I have also noticed that I get these weak openings at E's distances where I can hear a European station @ 51 constantly with MS enhancements often for many minutes,surely this is not MS.Anyway the band is fascinating that's for sure.I am also getting my paper logs transfered over to the laptop while listening to the white noise.73

VK8OT now qrt.. heard PY5CC longpath last night could not break at 1300z working VR2. Worked 4W6UN fopr last qso. 32 countries and nearly 2000 qsos mainly cw since April 1st. Home to a mountain of 4W6 cards. re the 4W6 beacon on 097, it is just that a beacon,, if its on Ross is not home if its off either no prop or he is home. He is qsx 885 snf VK2QF is in daily contact. 4W6MM is also active not to be consused with EY8MM who is also active at same time. Please dont call people asking what to do about the beacon. The beacon is the beacon is the beacon. The G3SMC/9M6SMC beacon was heard here daily on 50.014 as well as 9M2TO on 50.004 showing that the path to 9M is active all the time.

Peter, Re this TV EME proposition... Don't forget that the TV TX's are rated at Peak Sync Power, so the 50 Hz field rate sync peaks are transmitted always at full power. As long as the Rx bandwidth covers a few hundred Hz that should be an effective signal to look for...

I thought it would be a good day when 70 QSLs arrived in the post, but didn't expect ZP6CW @2025! Thanks for #51, and third new one this year. Half an hour later PY5CC 59/59, VERY loud for about ten minutes, and no takers for a while. LU & PY1 in weakly, and ZP5AA beacon GG19 up to 579. Magic!

On 23 April I got my best DX as far working CE8SFG among several
extremely strong signals from LU, CX, and PY! Fantastic for
a newcomer on 6 meters. Running 50 watts into 5 el @20 meters.
I have my little 706 RX 24-24 hours, and that pays...

If you are using a stacked 50 MHz array, with little or no gain at 48.25 and probably at 49.75, I don't think you'll hear anything from the moon. Except that, Tv transmitters have big ERP, but spread over a 5.5 or so MHz.

Mike VE9AA makes an interesting point about possible EME from TV transmitters in EU (or anywhener else for that matter). One point to remember is that high erp TV tx's mostly use arrays that get gain by vertical compression of the main lobe either omni or directional. So any EME path would need to consider only the rising or setting moon for a very short time........For some high sited Band III services the main lobe is often tilted below the horizontal by sometimes more than a degree, such is the narrowness thereof...

For EDX and square chasers: Worthwhile beaming 50 to 100 degrees eon from the UK today from now to midday. I was one of the few to work YL2JN in KO26 yesterday at 1140 gmt. He was 20 over 9 in 1091XI, but only for about 15 minutes. I note he has already been worked this morning by PA4PA. Wish I could join you, but I am one of the sad folks who has to work today. 6M E.M.E. stations, please take note*! I just installed 8/8
here at VE9AA and am looking to "listen-in" on 6m EME skeds
that may share a commom window with me here in FN65rr. My
small amp is currently offline, so only have 100w (not enuff for EME!)

Swalbard, JW. Peter JW7QIA/LA7QIA, rang me monday the 17 th. and told me he was leaving for Ny Aalesund at Swalbard tuesday the 18 th. The trip is a mix of work and plesure, most likely he will have most time for radio during the 27 th. till May 3 rd. In this period he will be at a QTH where he can be QRV at SIX too. Thursday 20 th. I had a QSO with Peter at 21 MHz, where he told me he had to leave the 6 meter yagi behind as he had 70 Kg overveight luggage. He still intend to be QRV at SIX now with a wirebeam. High latitude transpolar Es paths: Here in W1 land we see a peak between ~ 0200-0400 UTC. Very often we marvel at the signal strength received from high latitude Scandanavian and Russian "indicators" at 48/49 Mhz video carrier frequencies. I see this occur about once every three years and it is PROFOUND! Is it no wonder why we have yet to make contact? GL all...

Yesterday the TEP from my QTH to EU/ middle east was in from 1232 till 2100 the SFI-202 AI-5 KI-1
today it is SFI-202 AI-5 KI-2. Sunspots 22-4-2000=211 and 23-04-2000=226. All I can say is keep an ear glued to the loudspeaker 24/24 hours a day and wait for the magic. 73

Back to the white noise of IO91! I can now see some of the benefits of DXpeditioning! However, I am shocked at the amount of excellent propagation from the Falklands Islands bearing in mind its latitude. I was expecting zilch! Ideas about explanations would be welcome for my writeup - facts please using e-mail! Hearing ZS, KP4 and 9H calling CQ over top of each other was amazing, but I believe I was the only one hearing all three together. Worked 30 countries and had 500 QSOs. Last night a few VK4 and JA heard on CW calling CQ SA.

Re: party Peter, PA16, : I don't want to work all of the stations all of the time. Most of us would satisfied with KH6 or so once in a while. Quite a number of hams applying for membership and the question of funding nearly solved (coutesy by GU6AJE), I think we should proceed: The case of the LL (lossy layers) should be attacked both from above and below.
I asked my lobbyist at St. Peters QTH to find out whether a deal could be arranged. In addition to this I try to find out, whether the people at HARP would be willing to win the 50Mc first aid medals by tweaking their equipment for selective 50Mc treatment of the ionosphere. Stay tuned!

With LU, just being spotted, as I type this into VE1, FN74 (you get all the DX VE9AA!)I'd now like to put in a claim for the "world's 2nd worst spot for 6m", NW England, behind our good friend up in SM3.
Im sure I'll be shot down by a GI or GM before the weekends out. Ive heard 3 signals this year, one even moved the S meter! Thats the standard to beat, any offers?

Today our 6 Meter legend W1QXX Jack Wilson became a SK. At home with his family quietly passed away after a year long fight with cancer.He made 6m fun and interesting ,I ended up making many contacts following the coat-tails of his KW.He was a good person and friend who will be missed by many who knew him.

I seem to have what i consdier an unfair share of east coast critics who just cant deal with the sucess from here if thats what you call it.
Of the 27 countries worked only 5 or so were new ones, the rest being duplicated in my rf hole in VK3 not far from
the VK7 that Peter suggests I go to. Well I have been told worse. I would like to work SA long path though if only I could stay awake until 1500z.
Don is right the only enjoyment is the chase and snaring that ellusive dx.
I am happy to work past my pb barrier of 17000 k finally after 9 years, all it took was a shift of 2000 kM. And I guess that is as some say cheating.

VK6RO, Graham. I admire guys like you, stuck at odd spots
on the map, that it could conceivably take a lifetime to work
DXCC on 6m, depending on how often you get to "play radio".
Sometime I feel like that too. I don't think I have missed more
than a few days here and there with the 6m rig on, but I am at
only 83 countries since late 1991. Peter/PY5CC (admittedly a good op
and nice guy) has more than double my total, and has been QRV
roughly the same period of time. It brings tears to my eyes
to see the fantastic, amazing DX he is working. (He is my 6m hero!! :-)
Anyway, I am sure there are guys even worse off than me. I wonder
what it's like in SM/OH/TF/OX/VO2/R1F/JX/LA to work 6m? Probably
less F2 than even "I" get. REports from anyone in Northern
Scandanavia? Keep the faith Graham, and I shall too. VK8OT
seems to be doing well from VK8, though it would take forever to
get to 100DXCC's even from there I would say. I enjoy seeing
the reports, even though I only get to work DX every now and then, ha ha!

A few things...FB for PY5CC-wow! I can only dream to make a
single LP in my lifetime. Not very many EVER made from here in VE1/9 that I have heard of. Rx my Py0FM QSL on Friday, and also one for XYL, VE9AAA, Coreen. Peter you were
her first/only DX QSO on 6m. Thanks to you and Hatsuo/JA1VOK for that. ***ONLY*** DX so far this cycle was around late Nov '99.
Made a few QSO's to (w)EU and to LU/CX/J8/TI etc. That's the ONLY DX. I repeat agn, ONLY DX. So for those of you (even in N. G-land) that complain/comment, that you don't see DX for weeks at a stretch---remember your friends across the pond, eh? I look fwd to XATL Es starting about
May 10th or so. Hopefully we'll link into some of this F2
stuff the "rest" of the world has been working. Bought a new rig (Ft-847), but so far, I don't think the 4 or 5 local
6m QSO's have made it worth the investment, hi hi!

All Eu foF2 values (even in JP99)between 11 and 12 MHz except the on in JN61, that's only 9.75. No traces of ES today. Looking at the SSN/flux statistics I would not be too supprized if the peek of this cycle was about a week ago (hope I'm wrong). If so, it should mean we would stick with 1988 type propagation (same SSN/flux), a terribla thought !!

Nothing from VP8 in these parts despite some encouraging indicators from the South yesterday afternoon . Lets hope that activity continues after Chris's departure .The only DX station worked in IO90 was 3C5I at 1430 GMT. As far as I am aware I was the only station heard / worked. In the absence of any openings I've been monitoring the TV frequencies in Africa recently and I'm surprised at how often they appear. Apart from 3C what else is in that region ? ( 5X or 5Z ?? ) Yesterday I had CT and EA TV for hours up to S7 also another unidentified carrier on 48250 which peaked at 180 degrees. Finally does anyone have an Email address for 5X1GS ?

Re: G0RUZ. Geographically VP8 is at our lattitude, but geomagnetically he is located equal to the southern Med. So it's a big difference. And it's not just us not getting much, look for VE and northern W spots, not much either.

I was just reparing my FT847 and came on frequency to test it, when a station reply my call. He was FR1AN !!! yes Reunion Island Long Path!! What a contact. 29743Km qso. Hes signal pick up to S9 !! False alarm :( Malay TV. In the 30 seconds it took for my rotator to come around from the NW to SE the 48 TV popped up. In the start there was only one lonely 49.750 carrier to the NW, and then bingo half a dozen + a few 48's as well. I think I have around 10dB F/B still down at 48, so definately Malay along with all the usual Asian stuff.

VK - ZS path: Spend both Saturday and Sunday (AEST) afternoons monitoring the path to ZS from VK4. Huge signals on 10m (ZS stations RS 59++, and best DX 9G1 with RS 59), but nothing on 6m. I obtained a list of possible indicators from the ZS 6m www site, but heard none. Does anyone have any tried and proven indicators for ZS and surrounding countries?

In Northern Europe we are constantly complaining about how poor this cycle has been so far and I agree!However if you live in the Southern Hemisphere its seems to have been excellent.VP8 is almost as far south as we are north and yet Chris has been having a fabulous time.Why is this?Why are the conditions so much better in the Southern hemisphere?Theories?

What a FABULOUS day!! The band opened early with KG50 South Africans. Within the hour I was hearing KP4, Peurto Rico, ZSs, Europeans AND LUs on backscatter all calling CQ on top of each other - never heard ANYTHING like this before. New countries worked ZS, KP4, LU, PY (PY5CC of course), CT3,CN AND I worked ZD9BV as a bonus! I got VP8AWU to call me on his long wire to get VP8 in the log and EA7KW heard him and called him! We also worked N4IS and N2RTH. I had to go out for lunch and Keith, VP8CMT worked a bunch of stations as well in my absense. What a FABULOUS day! I don't have a meeting until late on tomorrow so I hope to be around for much of the day. This is the life. Chris

Hi dr OMs, in 12 April at 2130UTC i contacted the following stations: ZL2KT 59, ZL2AAA and ZL2AGI w 57 all in the same locator RF80. I still copied ZL2KT for a few minutes then after nothing. After my first contact w ZL2KT i called CN8KD for a QSO with THE ZL2 but his antenna wasn't QRV.

I have spent all week preparing for the RSGB 6m contest.I got a new Heil microphone,recorded the cq loops and carefully equalised them in my recording studio,got a footswitch and learned how to use Taclog.I even beefed up the amp EHT so everything would run cool.I then get up this morning to discover the most awful cold!I can hardly speak!I feel dreadful and will take one hell of an opening to get me into the shack.My tip for the winner is Andy GD0TEP,unfortunately I couldn't find a betting shop to give me any odds.Good luck to anyone who enters the contest.73 cough splutter!

EY8MM came on true to his promise last Thrusday and was heard working VK6, VK4, VK2, VK8, great signal and great op with excellent English.
He attended a University in Melbourne studying English in 1996/1997 and visited the VK3SIX site to see how a serious 6M station performs.
With 100w and Force 12 yagi he was into VK8 from 0645z to 0930z on 13th.

Just back from Uluru where it rained all day. heard VR2KW last night on a short whip and lots of 9M TV and UA0TV and JA pileup on 50.140 CW.
I see VK4FNQ worked a few ZS6 stations around 0700 on 13th, anyone want to bring the rest of us up to speed on this and where and when we should look?

I am just noting my archives indicate 12 May for my earliest Es transatlantic qsos and possibly a week earlier for VE1. In early May these events are rare but can happen. It will be interesting to see if the increased Solar activity causes a delayed, shortened or lower intensity Summer Es season. Best DX

Comment added at 11:23 UTC on April 15: An impulsive M4.3 flare was observed at 10:18 UTC. Its source was
probably region 8955 which had been developing very tight magnetic gradients near the main trailing spot over the
last few hours prior to the flare. The region is now much more complex than it was early today and could produce
additional M flares, perhaps even a major flare. The region is rotating into a position where it could be the origin of
geoeffective CMEs.
Comment added at 14:57 UTC: Region 8955 produced another M flare at 14:48 UTC, this time an M2.2 event.

Hi Folks, Just had a note from John W4FRU the QSL manager for ZD9BV. He tells me that the 50MHz logs will be on the next ship out (Due May) and he will respond to the QSL requests within three to five days of getting the logs.

Great day yesterday! A short after 9h-dl Es was reported around 18:40Z, vp8dbl came in out of the blue! I worked Chris for my #81 and heard him for about 5 minutes here in jn86 area, enough to alert my friends (9a3hz - congrats on #100, 9a8a, 9a1cal, s59a). It seems that propagation was highly focused as he was heard in circle of some 50 km (I hope it wasn't a pirate, hi).

Alan, us lot here in Brisbane appreciate your efforts running the beacon. We're encouraged by hearing the ZD8VHF beacon several times in the LP 2300-2330 timeslot. It's also nice to hear the VK4FNQ worked no less than six ZS stations on 13 APR in the SP 0700-0715 slot. It's just a pity the SSN has been significantly down in the last ten days or so. SSN was 301 on 2 APR when we worked CT3HF via LP on SSB. We live in hope!

3C is not one of those magic spots. Being on the equator, it misses out on TEP. After 1 month of running a beacon on 097 at night long path, and during the day short path, to VK, JA or Asia, I've had reports of VK (Mar 15th), JA (Mar 23) and VP6 (Apr 9th) all from 2230-0020. But no qso's, only reports. I'll keep on running the beacon for another four weeks but then will rest up for a while, unless dx appears. A beacon with 150W and a beam really is good for checking out paths, providing reports are good. Thanks to all those who have reported in so far. Cheers

I have a service job 300 nMiles North West of Alice and will be flying myslef
out in a C172RG Cutlass on April 20th rturning on the Friday, will take FT650 and a small yagi and should be
able to get on the air from about sunset to sunrise each night.
Dont know the grid square but dx is 700 kM Nw of Alice Springs airport at a plave called
Tanami mine. I heard EU last night and maybe the closer dx and higher latitude will produce some results to

Yes Charlie the 2xFM activities of the BQ9 lead a lot to be desired, hoping to work it and thwarted every evening especially at the unpredictable apperances 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500z and the lack of liason on HF when you ask them
a question they wipe you off or choose not to respond. Seems a sad waste of operating time to run 2xFM.

Nick, haven't got a clue how to predict MUF !!!. Since most of the F2 openings are via multi-refraction the 14 MHz value for the foF2 can only be used as a warning to be alert. The actual MUF depends (in case of single-refraction)on the foF2, the hight of the refracting part of the F2-layer as well as how it is tilted. A foF2 of 16 MHz and a bad tilt may still focus your signal way into space. So it's difficult to predict a single-refaction, let alone multi. The only thing I expected this cycle was less openings, but because of a much lower MUF, a better chance for LP-openings and W6/7(SP) from PA (Last cycle the MUF seemed to be simply too high). The first was right, the last ..., we'll see this fall (or the next).

****EXTREMELY POOR OPERATING ETIQUETTE ON 6 METERS BY OPERATOR OF BQ9P*****
I write to raise my objection and to complain on the "Extremely Poor Operating Etiquette On 6 Meters By BQ9P" DX'ers everywhere are grateful for the activation of Pratas, BQ9P both on HF and on 6 meters, however the shockingly poor operating skills and attitude of the Operator behind the 6 meter operation is mind shattering! If anyone at BQ9P is reading this, good and I hope it hurts!!!!
Please get someone with a bit of common sense and knowledge of six meters to be operating the six meters side of things please.
Last Saturday, the Operator of BQ9P had the "NERVE" to work DX pile up for no less than 2.5 hours occupying the 50.110MHz DX window. He was transmitting on 50.110MHz and listening 50.120MHz and up [split]. There is nothing wrong with split, but to transmit on 50.110MHz for 2.5 hours!!!! What a joke for a DX operation!!!! You either have no consideration for others or have absolutely know idea about proper operating on Six meters.
This operator even carried on after many stations called him and advised him to QSY from the window!!! These were various stations all over the "Pacific Rim", congratulations you made yourself very well known to many DX'ers in the "Pacific Rim" area as the "DX'pedition That Jammed Up The DX Window".
You should also be awarded the Oscar Award for "Best Repeat Performance" as you went ahead and did the same thing the next day and had to be told again to QSY by DX'ers in no less than 6 different countries in the region!!! We would also like to give you the "Most Annoying DX'er Award".
Do us all a favor, get a proper 6 meter operator behind the radio and stay well away from working pile ups on the window!!!!!!

4W6/VK2QF expedition results.
In total during on air time the expected blackouts lasted for 15 hours and one especially on the 4th during
a 6 metre opening to Japan removed an hour or 180 contacts! In total the 6m band opened 6 times during
the expedition. Total 6m entities 15, total 6m qso's 379.
Breakdown of qso's.
YB = 10, VK = 25, FK = 1, H44 = 2, JA = 316, 4W6 = 1, P29 = 2, 9M2 = 4, 9V1 = 3, V73 = 1, KH6 = 2,
BV2 = 1, BG7 = 2, VR2 = 6, ZL = 2.
E/W 0 dx was Hawaii at 8,962km and N/S to Hokkaido at 5,971km.

To Peter PA1SIX - I would be interested in a copy of the map showing geomagnetic latitudes, too. Is there anywhere it can be posted up, or would you mind e-mailing me a copy? As to the state of the cycle, I remember '89 was a LOT better, and I was 200 miles further north then, living in a serious RF black hole, using indoor antennas with no gain. Maybe it'll come round for the autumn equinox. Only 3C5I/b heard today, 529.

I agree with Brian, this cycle is very disappointing so far, I have heard NOTHING this year. In fact, the only long haul DX this cycle from here (IO81) was an Es extended TEP opening to LU/CX last summer. OK, so I don't sit around all day listening to .110 but this time last cycle the band was buzzing, J52US/9L1US beacons banging the S meter every day, loads of ZS6, ZS3, 7Q7 etc. Ah well, here's hoping for an improvement or the radio goes in the bin :-)

Re: 5B4FL. Nick you're not even in Eu !!! And geomagnetically you're even further off. About 1000 km (10 deg)south of José EA7KW. I'll send you a map with geomagnetic lattitudes and you'll see the massive difference between your area and the rest of Europe. It also shows why the SP's in the lower squares in SP get the same propagation as the guys in southern F (= equal geomagn. latt.)

The plans for the trip from PA3HEN/MM has changed because of a strike in Finland destination now will be BORDEAUX FRANCE IN94 leaving PORTUGAL Saturday evening 8/4 or Sunday morning 9/4.He can be qrv from the sea grids IN64-74-84-85. What a AURORA opening finally there was live on 6m in this part of EUROPE.It starts with signals from LA and spread out all over EUROPA.I work myself stations from LA-SM-G-GM-GW-DL-SP-ES-F-OK-9A and hear stations from OH-LY-EI-GU-GD-OZ-OE-ON-PA.QTF was between 270 degrees and 90 degrees.I say tnx for the 4 new grids and say sri to the people they call me and don`t get a answer because they where to weak.

Re: aurora. I read that last night the A index was less than 100. During the March 1989 event the A index peaked at 250.
A pity we only had a few countries with a 6m allocation back in 1989.
Visual aurora was stunning including a 20 minute period around 2230 when 75% of the sky was blood red in colour.
Although excellent Ar condx, strange that I only heard a single Scandinavian station
in 5 hours operating, perhaps due to the unusual southerly position of the auroral curtain. 73s

Stay alert. After some of the magical auroral openings of the last cycle it only took the ionosphere one day to recover. Big F2-openings followed. All signs are good for the band to nicely open tomorrow. The geomagnetic activity seems to drop and so does the flux.

Hello to all:
Thanks to our friends across the pond for alerting us of auroral activity taking place at their location.
We caught it as we left work at 1945 Z, working one station from the mobile. When we got home, we worked
many of those close-in grids, including six new grids. We worked about 28 stations in 18 different grids
over the four hours here. Then we heard the HC2FG beacon come in at 0015 on the 7th! Several HC and HP stations,
along with HP3XUG came in on SSB over the next two hours. Pileups were tremendous and we could not break them.
However, at 0428Z, we heard HP3XUG (EJ88) on CW on 50.125 and we got him using just 10 Watts and a dipole! HK3YH (FJ24) was on
50.102 on CW with a big pileup and we managed to get him finally using the same 10 Watts at 0512 Z (this is 1 am in the
morning!) The Magic Band is truly magic today!! Look for more stuff today! 73

Very interesting Ar conditions and good activity last night. Best DX from IO94 was to 9A3. QTF 90 degrees all evening. Last QSO was with OY9JD at 02.00z but still strong propagation at this time. Very strong signals from South England many S9+ but no F stations heard. GB3MCB Ar for more than 5 hours. I note K1TOL reporting EuTV at 04.00z by ArEs. No sign of OX despite searching. That was a mother of an aurora, visuals were stunning and better than the March 89 event.I had 107 qso's in 19 DXCC.Working G GM GI GU EI ES YL SM OZ LA ON PA SP DL OK OE 9A I and F.GU and EI were new believe it or not.I still need GJ!IK1MTZ was the only Italian station worked.I spent most of the time beaming 60-90 degrees.I had a fantastic time.73

RE:Andrea(IK5QLO & Peter(PA1SIX): Hey, why when somebody say "Southern wall" everybody jumps? Did I say something wrong? I was never angry with southern stations who had better condx than me (I was jealous though :-)). Of course there's allways a better QTH!
Now for some "brag" stuff. We managed to break the pile-up on ZD9BV bun only when his signal dropped to S7. Mark, 9a8a made first 9A-ZD9 qso, and a couple of minutes later I got lucky too. Later, worked TU2OJ for #79. Later this evening, to my pleasant surprise, I had a QSO with PY2XB. Also hrd PY500B, but couldn' reach him. CU all on six!

Theo PA3HEN/MM will fly Friday 7 April to PORTUGAL to go on board in FIGUEIRE DA FOZ IN50 from there he is going to OULU FINLAND KP24 leaving PORTUGAL on Tuesday 11/4 in the evening.His frequency will be 50140 when split operation is necessary his rx is 50145 and tx 50140.When he is in the shack he is using his breakable beacon sending the message `VVV DE PA3HEN/MM PA3HEN/MM PA3HEN/MM QRV`after the message there is a delay of about 10 to 15 seconds in this time you can give him a call.QSL via PA3BLS direct or buro.The first 2 weeks there are no spots of me on the cluster from PA3HEN/MM because I visiting EA8 in this period.Hope Theo works you this time and give a lot of new grids.

Other then VP6BR I also heard JR6HT calling CQ a few times arround 50.110 from 2342 gmt, so the long path probagation was lurking arround for a very long time. Looking at the great circle map from my end this could also be a good path to SAMOA. KH6 and 3D2 have been worked along this path from 9H in the past not to mention countless JA's, on a direct long path beam heading. 73....Joe

PS to the PY2XB story: The contact happened late (near midnight, 22:00 UTC). Seeing that we have reasonable propagagtion into West Africa that time some nights, VK/ZL/South America would do well to keep an ear open. ZS6BTE, 'AXT, 'WB and 'EZ have been active around that time.

What a thrill to work PY2XB last night! The furthest west from ZS this cycle has been CT3/EA8. He was barely audible for about four minutes, peaking 330 degrees. Probably backscatter from EA8 area. Thanks to IK2QEI who alerted him to the weak ZS calling! Country number 85 for me.

Yes there are other places than PG66 but here is where all the action is. Today during a spectacular VK east coast to Central American opening vK4KK followed by VK2BA worked EH8BPX on 50.171 Mhz after he alerted us on 10M.
Although nowt heard hear I noticed a video carrier which I wold have dismissed as Malay but I am now thinking it is Long path maybe 3C51...details 48.2502 rough raspy harsh frame buzz 50 Hz not 60 and beam o65 degreeas over USA, also had 42.500 FM Russian speaking and Snotel 40.530 same time which i would have said was Asia but given he long path from VK6 to TL8 and VK3 to 9Q5 which occured ten years ago or so on April 11th and 12th, I think a strategy is need for a shot at this one so any ideas email me or post hear for a try over th next five mornings or so. 73 and good luck I am hear to be worked, I hsve CW skills and the noise level is low. I may even hook up 8GF;s amplifier. we are allowed 400 watts.

559 by 2150 and kept calling cq on this frequency.
I put several spots on the IT9HZC packet cluster but to my surprise these do not appear
on the internet DX Summit Cluster. All my spots for all the other stations are there.

Hi All , i worked ZD9BV on 24Mhz this evening ( was at work when 6 opened !! ) . He runs and IC551 ( 10 W ) and a 5 element beam . He reported working just over 100 stations in the opening on 6 and will be qrv each day including this weekend so fingers crossed !!

I fly out to VP8, Falkland Islands on Monday evening (10th) at 11:59 via Ascension. I leave on the evening of the 19th. I am taking an FT650 and an HB9CV. I don't know where I'll be staying so not sure how I will get the antenna up yet. An alternative is that I make contact with VP8ALJ and try and use his shack (Nick, 5B4FL had a QSO with him earlier this week. Anyway, look on this page for updates. I'll do my best to be QRV although I have a lot of (boring) meetings to attend! At least all my expenses are paid for so I can't complain. (And, I think Nick should buy me a beer 'cos I am hand-delivering his QSL - how's that for service!) Call. Any telephone numbers of VP8 hams would be useful. Chris

A great, but embarrassing afternoon! Heard ZD9BV very early in the propagation called him and was QRMed out (accidentally) when he came back. The pack started up immediately and I didn't know whether I had a good QSO or not. So, after 20 mins of heartache I decided to recall - Andy came straight back with a "I just worked you". Nice day indeed. Hrd 3C5I for long time wkg split several QRG's. Then TR8CA with 55 and a lot of ZS1 and ZS6. Not hrd TU2OJ and finally ZD9BV (IF32) with 59+, but I could not get thru the pile-up..I only wkd ZS6AVP. But what a mess it was. Also a lot of different EU stations on the band. Nice day..but couldn't work much. My QTH is to low (48 mASL is ant. = 8el.) Next time better. See you all.

What a day indeed Pierre!ZD9BV never got above 52 in IO93 the southern G's had him at S9!Congrats to G4CBW who did very well to crack the pile from IO83.I did get TR8CA for a new one and several new sq in ZS with ZS1 for the first time and a new field but chased TU2OJ all day.At one point we had F2,TEP and E's at the same time.I worked Peter PY5CC 55 both ways,but no LU or CX which I still need.The frustration is all part of the fun though.....isn't it??It really is grim up north lads.73

Bob 9a3ji, there is always someone who has a better qth than your on 6mt, it is not a matter of "southern Wall". like you I am living on the edge of the hot spot at 44°N, and there are always some stations only 50 Km southern who works much more, without talking about what is workable from IT9 of 9H... Six is an unfair band, But I recognize that there is more glory in working the DXCC from VK or U.S. or from those Northern EU lands where propagation is... Keep the faith pals!

Interesting day today.Worked ZS,3C,V5 and heard TROCA/B.V51KC was a new one for me 55/55 although peaked s8 about 2 mins later.Alan 3C5I peaked S9 but with deep and rapid qsb.The big mystery was the S9+ FM voices from SA on 47.000 and 47.500 they were in for approx 1hr.I also had video on 48.260 S7 QTF 90 degrees.I am not sure what I am listening for with video carriers can someone give me some pointers of what to listen for etc?I also worked a few GM's on Aurora so I enjoyed things today in IO93.CU in the morning.

Luckily, I was out for 20min at the time, so didn't have to listen to LU7XP working YO's and LZ's with S9 reports :-)
It's frustrating enough to listen to D3SAF, FH/TU5AX, 5R8FU, 9U5D and not being able to break through southern wall, and now this.
Guess we'll just have to wait a few more weeks (like somebody said: wait 'till DX is 59, then work him easy :-)) But, who wants it to be easy?

Hi all! Well, these stories of interesting QRP contacts show that you don't really need a big mouth to get through if the propagation is favourable. I've managed to work 50+ DXCC entities using 2.75W in a 1/2_wave vertical, with ODX being VK8ZLX. QRP WAC on the same antenna was a doddle too. The best one I have witnessed was PA3FGI cracking an enormous pile-up to VE1YX with just under 200mW SSB. His PA stage was a BFR96 :-) As the QRP aficinados always say: Power is no substitute for skill. Maybe a better antenna or a good DSP filter is an alternative for the big amplifier? 72 & 73, Pete

QRP DX...I met Peter PY5CC at ~1700z yesterday(3 April)
with a 59+20 signal.He was using only 80W rf.After some
chat about VP8 on the band I asked him to try a 2W QSO.
I lowered my power to minimum and he reported 59 with my
signal.A 59 signal on my meter is 30+db above the noise
and I asked him to try to copy me at 1mW (1 milliwatt).
Inserting 3+10+20 db of fixed HP coaxial attenuators
the output power was at approx. 1mW level and Peter was
still able to copy my signal at 51 !!
All the test was recorded by him and during his playback
my 1mW signal was R5.
With a distance of 10000Km between us,it seems that during
the opening some kind of ionospheric focusing was taking
place.

Pacific from PY : Yesterday KH8/N0JK peeked S9 (very briefly) and Jukka VP6BR was S9++ for over an hour. Peter, PY5CC, worked a couple ZLs. I heard during few seconds one of them calling Peter. Openings are usually from 20:00 to 21:30Z. The interesting comment is that ZL contacts were via backsacter, once we were both beaming central pacific. The ZL videos were weak BTW. ZL/VK and Oceania please beam our way !

Re: ZL's opening, congrats!. 2nd day ZL-EA7. Repeated pattern on the 45 Mhz ZLVIDEO: audible since around 1830Z. Suddenly rising to S9, remaining vy loud for near 1 hour (no Zls yet) then dropped to zero. After a while again up, keeping at a S3-5 level. When ZLs were in, video was S1-2 (MUF favouring up 50 Mhz). Waiting for KH8, H44, ZL 1,3,4 areas.... 73

Re:PA0SIX; Hi Peter a.o., SSN 301 is yesterdays SSN, but of course this is pretty high. The Sun is peppered with small spots these days. The greatest threat for solar eruptions comes from region 8936 which has a beta-gamma magnetic field. All the other regions show very low activity, but who really knows? Usually we ought to have supperb DX on 6 2day, cause its monday again. Still got last monday on my mind...when I was QRL like today and KH7 was on the band. 73 de

Cycle 23 still seems to be on the rise (today's SSN 301!). Every low in flux/SSN has been higher than the previous one. Unless this trend would dramatically change I wouldn't be supprised if this cycle would last 11 (or even +) years.

Band in ZS still steadily improving with earlier opening times a good oman for possible Asia and Pacific openings soon. Historically YC and that area worked previous cycle first two weeks of April while last two weeks of April had openings to KH6, JA, VK and SOUTH AMERICA. I can offer a tiny tidbit of opinion re: wl7wo. Several years

DX callsigns, WL7, KH8, etc. and would get people all worked
up into a lather using them on 160m band, not telling ops he
was just in W1 land. again, I have no knowledge whether or not
there is any connection to your VP8 contacts. I hope none.
GL!!! Perhaps others that also operate 160m over here in NA can
shed a little more light on the details of the VP8 or his manager.

i didnt know there were any new 6m ops on falklands other than vp8cmt, he didnt tell me there was an active 6m man on vp8 ,maybe there is now though, thats one reason why i am trying to get a yagi taken down there , so as to get someone on 6m.its one of 2 things , either geniuine or another zd9!!. i expect chris g3wos will clarify it when he visits vp8 in a few weeks time.if anyone catches vp8cmt on 20m im sure he will know the answer?.i hope its a genuine call,would be nice to know it is.best of luck73.

3C5I bcn is still running overnight long path to either JA or VK directions. But the last few days, only noise here on 6m but 48240 video from Asia 0900Z. I'll set the bcn on 50.097 unless there is a better freq.

Had a small ZS opening today for about 25 minutes zs6wb,axt,pjs and bte, loudest was 599 but only for a few minutes.I think it was E's assisted as it was very localised no Southern G's this time.I also observed a very weak scattered signal from HV0A at QTF 110-120 degrees.Lots of MS from him as well.When will F2 really reach these high latitudes? 73 from IO93

On a positive note...let me share my euphoria on working a new country from QG62, 4W6/VK2QF Nev who romped in yesterday at 2230 on cw .106 ssb .115 to top off a great week. My worked/heard/listening for list last week: another new one (thanks for moving off .115 guys) 9M6BAA cw.107 who qsy'd off.115 too much qrm. TO0DX b .115. QSO cw .110. Heard H44PT .115 ssb. Response to 4APG re power merchants and the DX \window well from what I heard this morning on 110 there sure where a lot of alligators clogging up 110 from VK4. I chose 50.115 based on consultation with the JAs on Makos QRG JA1OEMs, QRG and the Laotian station.
Get a life Peter I am dx to the JAs as a CW op from VK8 and I am sure some of the low power 50 watters would take
exception to your accusations. Only senior JAs get 500 watts, i didnt even get 500W as 7J1BAX nethier did all the 7J7sa at Misawa.
Ill stay on 115 working split on CW until the demand is satisfied. Tough.
